I'm writing this review in hopes that the manager at the Modesto Amtrak station will consider retraining staff members who work at the front desk. I visited on Sunday, 6/21/26 around 12:45 pm. When I approached the front desk clerk to ask for the bathroom code, the employee did not respond verbally and instead held up a board with the code, but did so with an attitude. Later, when I asked whether my train was on time, she rolled her eyes and pointed to the board displaying the information. I found this interaction to be unprofessional and awkward. Overall, the experience was disappointing and I hope that staff are reminded to treat customers with respect and patience. read more

DON'T believe the signs on the parking lot that supposedly closes at night! I complained after someone siphoned gas out of my truck when it was parked overnight--and the lady at the window inside the station said that it is NEVER LOCKED at night! Park at your own risk. The trains are nice--but you should get a ride to the station (or drive to your destination). Don't park overnight. Why can't Amtrak take down the misleading signs? read more

I'm not very Modest about my experiences in Modesto... they were awesome. Kinda. Modesto bus station is actually the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot, which has Modesto Amtrak and also Greyhound stopping here. It looks lovely and Spanish like many of the Cali stations do, and it's gorgeous just like a lot of the stations in California. New and shiny and all that good stuff. Its official name is the Downtown Transportation Center which is really not just a bus terminal but used to be the train station. It might start getting trains coming through here with the Altamont Corridor Express in about 2023. It's been used since 1993 exclusively for buses. And it has been open here since 1915, and this is one of many Mission Revival stations which is made to look like a Mission - and it's pretty gorgeous. read more

Though the train station was clean, and the train arrived on time with friendly train conductors; I was more than displeased with the negative attitude of the woman working at the ticket/ information booth. Upon walking up to the window, I noticed she was either texting or using social media and completely ignored guests. Once a question was asked, she was passive aggressive and was exhibiting a negative behavior overall. Once the person I dropped off took the train, the ticket/ information booth was closed as she was driving the cart around to look at a building at the station. Did not catch her name but she has brunette hair, blue eyes, wore silver rings and was about 50-60. Would I recommend this station if you avoid the ticket/information booth? Yes. If you need assistance or are older and need help with luggage, avoid this station and utilize another. read more

One of the best parts about taking a train versus plane is how easy everything is. You don't need to arrive two hours early, you don't need to separate your liquids out, you don't need to pay an arm and a leg to park, and you don't need to separate from your loved one a half-mile away. When you take the train, you arrive before the train leaves. That's it. And because Amtrack is notoriously late, I think arriving at the train 10-20 minutes before is more than enough time. When you take the train, you wait with your train-going pal until the train arrives. When you are picking up your worldly traveller, you meet them with a smile and a hug as they step off the platform. Then you take your bags to the car. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, do not wait for a massage from security, do not wait for a carousel of similar looking bags, do not wait for your connecting flight. Just get in the car and leave. Trains are hassle free. And about this particular station? No complaints here. It was easy to find, had good and free parking, and a comfortable (though minimal) indoor waiting room and outside waiting area. Mom arrived on the train, as promised, and I picked her up. This train station has been relatively reliable,when the train does run late its usually only 10 to 30 mins. My daughter has been using Amtrack to get home from college a few times a year. In my experience it serves our needs fine. The station is clean with seating outside and inside. Plus they are remodeling for more parking and what seems to be a SUPER awesome real black vintage steam engine train for display , site is still under construction but looks soon to be done. read more

Bi-yearly my family and I take the long journey by rail to Reno. The ride is about 8 hours, obviously much longer than a three hour car ride but, you take Amtrak for the experience. You can't imagine how beautiful the Sierra Nevada Mountains are until you've viewed them from the train perspective. It's breathtaking. We hop on the train at Emeryville, where there is little waiting, and I'm sure much easier than flying. Once, and only once, when the train picked us up from Reno it was filthy. It had just come from Chicago (Yes, you can take this train all the way to Chicago!), and hadn't been cleaned yet. Other than that I think Amtrak is great! 3.5 Stars. Went on Amtrak from here ONCE to go on a "super secret" trip to LA with a then boyfriend who like failed at ever telling the truth to anyone, thus the "secret" part. Getting tickets were fairly simple, parking ample, and the trip quick (for ground transportation). Minus a star or two for really weird/kinda gross food available on the train- what no fruit!? Come on! Minus another half for having to get off and switch to a bus in Bakersfield, ew! read more

Just brought my grandma to the Amtrak station. Very little seating waiting for trains. about a third of what is needed. when it came time to board she needed help getting on with luggage but wanted a seat in an uncrowded area. finding none she continued to walk and I was still waiting to set down her luggage for her when the train started moving. I waved to the two ticket takers to stop the train and was given a lot of attitude about why I was there and that there was "plenty of seats." well A there was not and B those ticket takers should be helping with luggage instead of mouthing off at family trying to help. Very disappointed in Amtrak service. Both the station and parking lot seemed clean and safe though so there's that. read more

My lady and I have been using amtrak for a couple weeks now since she is living in Fresno still and traveling to Modesto to see me and we are very happy customers. The trains are always clean for her and they usually run pretty close to their times when they are leaving or arriving. If you need to go to Sacramento or Bakersfield use the train! We have taken the Amtrak train/ bus several times from Modesto to Riverside and back again. We've always had a good experience and find the staff to be friendly and helpful. This last time, they went above and beyond. My 13 year old left her wallet on the train as we got off in Modesto. She realized it on the drive home. We went back, and Gary was a big help contacting someone on the train who then searched for the wallet and made an announcement on the train. He called us about half an hour later to let us know it had been found. Today, when we got to the station to pick it up, we found it had been fed exed to the station. Tim helped us to redeem the coupon for the full amount of cash she had in the wallet. We are extremely impressed and pleased with the customer service. Thank you again! read more

Daddy is going to LA. This was actually a pretty interesting experience. I wasn't aware that the Amtrak had a stop in Modesto. I personally wouldn't take the train because there are multiple stops along the way but it's a good alternative for those not wanting to drive. This location is very clean. A bit of an odd crowd while I was there waiting with my dad. MAKE SURE YOU PARK INSIDE THE WHITE LINES OR RISK GETTING A PARKING TICKET!! read more

Here's what is great at this station They have a cat..so yeah there's that..and she eats outside. Next...the track is close. So walking to the train is easy. The lobby is immaculate, well furnished with comfortable seating, good vending machines with decent coffee..not perfect but acceptable. If you can wait, it is better on the train. Bathroom is well stocked, fresh and clean..very nice. Robert checked me in and was polite and helpful.he explained everything. He looked my ticket up quickly so I didn't have to fumble around on my email/phone stuff. Usually Norma is there. She knows everything and is fast and great too. Everything there is modern and clean..you will feel good there.it's nothing like some of the old bus stations or Bart stations. It's actually very nice. If you need help, they will help you with getting to the train..getting bags etc read more

Finding a seat is the worst/ hardest part. Other than that, I enjoyed it. There may be some unexpected delays, but those shouldn't last long depending on the severity. They have electrical plugs and every seat, as well as a dining cart. Most seats have a pull out table like an airplane, and there are seats where there are tables, with two on each side. So, as long as you find a good seat youre good! read more

Should be 1 star but I am giving an extra star for the station itself certainly NOT the train station employee named Tim Baughman! I have never used Amtrak Express before today so I wasn't sure of exactly how things worked. I had gone online to find out what could and could not be sent on Amtrak but was unsure of the rest. Tim Baughman seemed to either be having a VERY bad day or he is just a VERY rude person in general. Another customer came in and he was rude to them as well...so this seems to be typical for him! I advise Tim to get another job because customer service is certainly not one of his strengths! I ended up shipping 37 containers from Modesto, CA to Orlando, FL. I'm an elderly lady with aching knees but love to meet friends in Stockton and lately I decided to take AMTRAK train. My first two rides, there were no available seats for seniors in the lower level, so I had to take the steps to go upper deck. Then last August 15, 2015, I was lucky to seat in the lower level. Train #711 arrived at my destination on time, however the platform is way high to the curb and believe it or not, there was no steps/stool for easy going down !. Young passengers waiting to go aboard extended their hands to me so I can carefully get down and not hurt my knees ! They are my angels ! AMTRAK ! ARE YOU WAITING FOR AN ELDERLY TO GET HURT??? Always late out of the Modesto location and then at the Oakland station they practically leave as you get one foot aboard. Such Inconsistency . Then this morning I tracked the status of my train . Online it kept reporting it as on time but I get to the station and it ends up being 20 minutes late as always due "track congestion". Hate having to use Amtrak . Awful. read more

I was dropped off at 1020 to find Gary getting into his car after a closing shift. After explaining my situation, he promptly disabled the alarm system and opened the gate for me. I have always loved riding the train and often use it. This morning it took the train from Modesto to Martinez at. 8:30 am.The conductor took my ticket without a smile or even looking at my face.
