Terrible! Traveling with an older adult and told to park approximately 1/4 mile away in parking garage on the top floor. There was no working elevator however, so travel partner and myself had to take all the luggage down flights of stairs. The parking permit machine did not work, so we had to obtain a manual one and walk back up to the car to be legal during our trip. We had bought a ticket for business class to be more comfortable. However, when we were about to board the train, we were asked if we preferred downstairs. My partner readily took the offer. When we got downstairs however, the seats were shabby compared to upstairs. The seat I was in was also broken. Worst of all however, is that there was no air!!! Furthermore, it was hot. The only person I saw around was the woman in charge of food. I told How there was no air, and she said that she would tell the person in charge. We waited over an hour, and still no change. I finally found the man in charge, and he said that there was no air, because the door to the cabin was shut. He said that he would open. I waited a long time, and finally the door was opened. There was now however no change. Im still on this totally uncomfortable ride, and I'm outraged at how they treat older adults. These are the most vulnerable that are kept in the most unhealthy conditions. Will be sure to tell everyone I know read more

2.5 STARS My family recently packed up and went east bound from Cali to Colorado all on the Amtrak. The Southwest Chief was going to be our little mobile home away from home. The whole online experience of purchasing our tickets and getting my questions answered over the phone was a breeze. We also rolled deep with 17 pieces of luggage since we were relocating. Trust, all that baggage was consolidated tenfold!! Excited about our very first trip on a train, we gathered the family to have a late lunch and did the whole waiting for our train to see us off. Emotional, indeed. Once we got inside The Chief and started the settling process during the first 2 minutes of boarding we felt like we came the f*ck up. $400 got us tickets, all that luggage, pretty spacious coach seating, and awesome views! TOTALLY WINNING!! It was too bad we couldn't snag a private room. My bad since I bought our tickets only a week and a half out from our departure date. No worries though, we were still thrilled. Little did we know that in 3 more minutes we'd feel the exact opposite. We got checked in and then here comes the conductor. Marshall. Good 'ol Marshall. My 1yr old baby girl was being a little babbly. We didn't think much of it since we thought they're use to kids getting settled in. The conductor was pretty much irritated @ her and even came on over like Rampage Jackson and starts to regulate on her without even looking to us, HER PARENTS. Oh. heck. no. Needless to say, you can imagine the boiling tension. My husband got up and sat her on his lap holding back his "I'mma kick your @$$" temper. Our Dear Marshall decided to take our restraint to cause a huge scene as being defiant and said that if we insist on jeopardizing our safety that our trip will end at the next station. WOW, a total of 5 minutes into our voyage and we're already getting threats of being kicked off the train. SUPER! SO, all that nonsense pretty much set the tone for our 24hr+ long trip to Colorado. The good thing is that Mr. Marshall did ease up a little bit throughout our ride but he sure did leave a bitter taste in our mouths. In addition to our conductor the other employees just aren't very friendly either. I decided to shrug things off and book dinner @ the dining car. You'd think the service would be great considering the hefty prices and the lack of food quality you receive. We dined in for dinner and lunch the next day and the ladies working hardly deserved the tip I left them both times. Maybe their attitudes were beaming at us because we were from coach and not from a room. Sure there were a few good staff members but we weren't bless to have them man the area that we were in. As far as cleanliness goes, the bathrooms were a nightmare but I guess people should really clean after themselves better. The general seating was also fairly sanitary in the beginning but as people left and got on, it turned a bit iffy. Overall our trip went well but they really do need to work on customer care. As a technical Salesman, I have been traveling from Santa Barbara to San Diego and even into Mexico. I had typically driven my car which means leaving my house at 5 AM working all day and then making that long and sometimes dangerous drive home sometimes arriving at 8 or 9 PM. A few years ago, i had a vendor ask me to drop him off at the train station because he was going to San Diego. I had never thought about taking the train for work and had only done it once in CA for a day trip to Del Mar. It was a great trip so I started to look into taking the train and having one of my coworker's pick me up at one of the many train stations along the way. For the last two years I have been riding the Amtrak and I must say I really love it. Instead of fighting traffic and unexpected delays I can get some work done on the [very slow] internet or read a book OR do what I typically do, doze off. I found the value of paying for the Business Class for several reasons: first, if you miss the train, you just call them and schedule the next train. Without the Business class upgrade, the ticket price would have been lost. Also, open amble seating. I was on one train where the conductor came into the car saying "their animals back there". When I got off I realized the problem. A group of 4th & 5th graders had taken a trip to Sea World and they were loud but they were back in coach. Yeah! The upgrade also gets you free coffee and danishes or muffins on the way down to San Diego and a little pack of snacks including red or white wine for the trip home. The restrooms are big and comfortable. I hate using airplane bathrooms, I feel like I got to rub Vaseline just to squeeze in. These bathrooms are big. Finally, I usually try to get some work done but today I just took the time to look out the window and enjoy our beautiful coast. I cant believe how beautiful some of the areas that we passed up. i am going to have to come back with the family. Go Adventure! read more

Compared to the service I got next door at the Sante Fe Express Cafe, this Amtrak station is the equivalent of a 5-star hotel's staff. After a really obnoxious encounter next door, I was a bitter on my Fullerton experience altogether, but I cooled my jets after some friendly customer service here. My train was about 45 minutes behind schedule and after my intolerable experience at the sub-snack bar quality next door I ended up spending the rest of my wait here. The staff was really friendly and apologetic for the wait we were having and one of them even let me borrow their iPhone charger so I wouldn't run out of juice on the way back. Besides that, the station itself is a great location downtown near a bunch of bars and restaurants. Definitely an easy place to meet up half way with a friend from LA or something. read more

We traveled on the Amtrak over the Memorial weekend, leaving Saturday at about 9am and arriving into Carlsbad at about 11ish. The train was a few minutes ahead of schedule. A round trip for a family of 4 (2 adults & 2 children) was $60, this is great considering gas prices! The purpose of the trip was to take my son to Legoland for his 8th birthday. I highly recommend taking the train as it is cheap, you avoid traffic, paying $44 a night for resort parking and the ride is relaxing. My only upset was we paid for 4 tickets and we were only accommodated with 3 seats to Carlsbad and 2 seats coming home as they over sold the train. There was also no order or crowd control to help on boarding passengers finding a seat. read more

This was my end station from San Diego, but also the one on my way back from Brea/Irvine. I HIGHLY recommend you purchase a roundtrip ticket, because if your train leaves AFTER the station is closed, and you don't have a pass, you're stuck! Luckily, I did so, otherwise, I would have been a small asian girl stuck in Fullerton at 11PM. Not that that's a horrible thing. There's a very lively bar across the way, and a yogurt place near by. Just be prepared, fellow Amtrak newbs, and get your tickets early while the office is still open! Taking the train for the day down to old town San Diego. Parking for the day is at the far end of the parking lot. There is a regular lot and a parking structure. We did the parking structure. The train was on time. We haven't traveled on a train for a few years so we were pretty nervous getting on the train. We had our tickets out for the conductor. She said. "You guys are going into old town, why are you sitting in the next car with the better seats?" She pointed us to the seats and said push the part of the seat down and relax. The seats back here are super nice. Big windows to see Orange County business parking lots before seeing the ocean. So far so good. It looks like a relaxing trip so far. Will have to see what the trip back is like. Stay tuned! LOL! Taking the surfliner north we were on a different train. The southbound train we took was 564. The seats on car 5 are the bomb compared to these that are on 595. The 595 seems like an older train from the 70's. the 564 seats in car 5 had leg rest and easier accessible restooms as well. If you are going to see the view make sure you are seating on the right side of the train southbound and the left side of the train for northbound to see the ocean views. After the ocean disappears you will see the lovely back lots and parking lots of the Orange County business. Just enjoy it and let them drive! read more

Very convenient to many food places like Old Spaghetti Factory and etc. The only reason it drops 2 stars is that it looks like it becoming a hangout to many homeless and transients. This Amtrak station is one of the cleanest I've seen so far. I used to take it to San Diego frequently and now to Merced once in a while. The Station is fairly easy to find and is pretty big. The bridge over the tracks were a bit confusing at first, but the employees are very accommodating and helpful. read more

I rode on the way back from Oceanside to Fullerton on engine 587. We were about to board on business class, and on our tickets it said business class in big black letters, but they lady Doris didn't read the ticket at all and sent us to coach class. The conductor had to correct her over the PA system on the train. Later my grandma had to use the bathroom and there was no toilet paper at all. When she brought it to Doris's attention, Doris acted passive aggressive and argumentative, saying that 'if it runs out it runs out and I don't wanna argue about it'. Upon entry in the train she was denied a seat in the lower part of the train for whatever reason. She's disabled and needs a seat down there, and was told she could've asked for one in a manner that made it seem like it was my grandmas fault for not knowing she could ask. This lady Doris needs to be fired for her conduct on the train last night. read more

The station is staffed for ticketing , checked baggage, and special services ( requested in advance per reservation) from 530 in the morning until 1030pm. Every single day of the year. Today I travel on Amtrac to SD. The 1st conductor we had Was so polite and helpful. I wish I got his name. The conductor on the return trip was Michael, he too was very helpful and polite. I traveled with a handicapped person in a wheel chair. They made the trip easier on me. Thank you so much... my 1 complaint is the station at OlD Towne San Diego. If not for the transit officer we wouldn't have known where to go. No one was there to help us. Who ever designed that steep hill for the handicap to go up should be smacked. The must never have had to push a wheelchair. This BS made me appreciate the transit officer and two conductors even more. read more

The station itself is great. But today's staff (2 women) must really hate their jobs. One would not tell me where to get my train, the other would not tell me how to get into the women bathroom (she made sure to tell me they have to guard it due to homeless issues. But it seemed the Men's side was open, w/o needing extra intervention). The station could use some kind of changeable billboards, to help people (ie,business class) know where to stand. It should not be that difficult. They definitely could use more help, since these 2 women seemed very unhappy. Too sad. read more

I am a fan!! San Diego is too close to fly. Too lazy to drive there...so what do you do? Take Amtrak. I took Amtrak 4 times already and the experiences were all good. Take Pacific Surfliner and it takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. Upgrade to business class for more comfort. You get electrical outlets, table for your laptop, more legroom, light snacks, a little can of beverage and newspaper. Just make sure you don't sit at seats reserved for 3 or more parties. It's definitely relaxing to ride and chat while enjoying the view of beautiful beaches. You can even nap. Do not sit near the restroom =P Easy parking. There is also a small cafe that sells coffee, pastries and energy drinks. Gotta have my morning monster energy drink ;) $23 and add $13 for business class one way 4 stars!! I am a fan!! read more

I probably should have read through more reviews to find out where the free overnight parking area was. The attendant directed me to the parking structure located across the street and on the other side of Santa Fe Ave. You'll see the structure as soon as you cross over. No passes needed. Once you enter the structure, head to the very top and park in the yellow spaces for free 72 hour overnight parking. From here, the walk to the train station was not bad at all. Once inside the waiting room the a/c was icy cold which was awesome. Inside was pretty standard, not too many seats though. But there are plenty of seating outside. There is also a small café next door where you can get snacks or have a brew while you wait. Overall, this station is nice and convenient, and gives you options to go to or relax as you wait for your train. read more

FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER USED AMTRAK: I never got the chance to review this place so here I am. This is from a train ride on 10/30/17. I was in San Diego and had an emergency and needed to go home. I didn't have a car so I found out about the Amtrak Surfliner and decided to take it from Santa Fe Station in Downtown SD to Fullerton. It was my first time on a train in YEARS and it was surprisingly relaxing. The view was great and it took around the same time driving there. I loved how they had Wi-Fi too. My train didn't have a lot of people so I got the whole 4 seats to myself. The station in Fullerton is surprisingly small and there were only 2 people working there in the booth when I saw them. They were very helpful and informed me of the other train options. I'm curious if they still have people there 24/7. The parking lot wasn't bad and my ride was able to find me easily here versus Union Station. I did like how it's walking distance from downtown Fullerton. Overall I would be open to coming back and taking Amtrak to go to San Diego. If you dont want to go to DTLA than go to the Fullerton Station, it's only a few stops away from LA. read more

A very convenient way to travel. However, I'm not sure it is worth it to reserve business class over coach. Going to Palm Springs via Fullerton, the business class section had no attendant. Coming back to San Diego via Fullerton, while the business class had an attendant, who was very friend, competent, and attentive, there was no red wine available. However, there WAS white wine available...and if you wanted red, you could PURCHASE it in the coach cafe car...for $15! Meh! on the amenities. read more

Feel like I've been RIPPED OFF AGAIN by amtrak. Many paying customers could not find a seat, smelled like a nursing home " urine and poop", and as always the wifi sucked! Efficient, Green, and an old fashioned way to travel in style. That and you can buy beer while on the train. =) I highly recommend taking the train especially for a weekend getaway. If you plan on buying tickets in advance of 3 days of more & have a AAA card expect a wonderful discount. My only con is that it's dangerous to park your car in the parking garage since my boyfriend's hatchback was stolen while it was in the parking garage for the weekend. =( read more

I have taken three Amtrak trips to east coast cities and other Amtrak trips to the Midwest. I have been on every overnight Amtrak train except from New York to Florida. I truly look forward to my Amtrak trips. It's a great way to see cities and baseball parks. The most scenic by far is the California Zephyr. The Zephyr travels between San Francisco and Chicago. It traverses the Sierras and Rocky Mountains. It parallels the Colorado River for several hours. The views are beyond spectacular. Amtrak fares are supply and demand. The more passengers the higher the fare. If you take an extended trip consider a 15, 30, or 45 day pass. The more days the higher the cost of the pass. Well worth the money! Take time to study the Amtrak website. You will find maps, schedules and train locations. Also narratives of several routes. Ask an an Amtrak agent for an Amtrak System Timetable book. They are free. If your train is more than 2 hours late to your destination, at the end of your trip, call Amtrak (1-800-USA-RAIL) ask for Customer Service. You may receive travel credit to be used for Amtrak travel within 12 months Do not leave your luggage downstairs on double decker trains. I have had things stolen twice. Inappropriate behavior or drunk behavior will not be tolerated by the conductor. The inappropriate passenger will be escorted off the train at the next stop. Law enforcement will be notified. Their are electric outlets at the seats to re-charge phones and lap tops The food is good and reasonably priced. if you get a sleeper, your meals are included. Before taking very small children on a long train trip, try a 5-8 hour ride to see if they like it. The coach seats recline, are wide and very comfortable. The seats have plenty of leg room. friend and i planned a day trip to del mar using the Amtrak. Now keep in mind this was my first time ever riding Amtrak. There was sufficient parking at the train station and finding a spot was not a problem considering we got there in the mid morning. My issue with this station is you really need to be on your toes to make sure you dont get on the wrong train by mistake. I've never been to this place and like to think I am pretty good at figuring things out and up until the train arrived I wasnt confident I was getting on the correct train. They could certainly use better instructions or have someone available to help us virgin riders. As far as riding the train it was fine. If you suffer from motion sickness you'd probably want to think twice before riding it. read more

This horrible man named "Gene" was so rude after waking me from asleep he ask me....."can I see your ticket" I ask why? This I'll already showed my pass for the 3rd time? This is a cool little station. There's an Old Spaghetti Factory there, and some other restaurants. You're not that far from the rest of Old Fullerton. You can take the train from as far as Oceanside to the South, and LA to the North. I recommend popping in here on a weekend (but check to make sure OSF is open for lunch!!) If you rarely ride the rails, I recommend a trip on the Amtrak either up to Union for lunch at Olvera St. or Phillipe's, or South to San Clemente. You can also take the Metrolink. read more

Today is 2/11/2019 at 8:16am. Oh I hate Amtrak surfliner, they have 8 open seats and they won't let people who are standing in the aisle sit. Typically they reserve 4 seats but this woman reserved 8 seats-This women is black , wore large hoop earrings , bleached dark blond hair, cut short like a boys cut. I can't find her name tag. An elderly couple asked her is there a place where seniors can sit downstairs. This woman with the hoop earrings said , I think so- in a mean ass tone. Geez what is wrong with her? this is on the 8:16am train from Fullerton station. What I thought was unfair was she let her friend with red beanie sit in one of the 8 open seats. I saw the woman in the hoop earrings playfully touching the red beanie and the woman in the red beanie looked back at me, probably asking the hoop earring woman if she can sit here, and the woman in the hoop earrings then smiled to her and playfully touched her beanie. I love this train station. Not only is it a great place for trainspotting -- you can easily catch Amtrak, Metrolink, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe trains -- it's also notable for several other reasons. There's been a train station on this site since 1888, and the current building has been active since the '30s. The public restrooms are clean and easily accessible. And the Santa Fe Express Cafe is open from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and offers light fare, snacks, and beverages. On weekend evenings, the cafe turns into a hookah bar of sorts -- and regularly hosts live music. Great for kids! read more

This station is okay. It's nice and does have a historical value to it. They make it clear when trains are coming and which side of the tracks to be on. You do have to take a bridge over the tracks to get to the other side. But again, they do give plenty of notice to make it over. The station could use a better cleaner. There's not a lot of homeless and loitering going on so it's strange to see the "scummyness" of the place, especially around the bridge. Conveniently located and easy to go see family. read more

These people are on par with the DMV or any government agency. I asked to use the restroom and the guy behind the glass said he would buzz me in. I go there and there is no buzz. I go back and ask a woman if I could use the restroom. She replies "Do you have a ticket? You can't use the restroom if you don't have a ticket." Geez. I walked to Knowlewood and they let me use theirs. I have used Amtrak multiple times. It's like $20 over way to get to Los Angeles. Their staff often sucks and their tickets are way over priced. HORRIBLE!!!! I told them I gave them the correct info about when I wanted to return. I ended up coming back when I intended however the person I got my ticket from at Amtrak Fullerton station messed up on my departure day, I tried calling them about how THEIR PEOPLE MESSED UP ON MY TICKET AND HAD TO PAY AN EXTRA 50 DOLLARS. They were rude, did not help or fix their mistake and gave me the run around. I've been a customer since I was younger in fact all my family was. They encouraged me to start flying. I commute every day to downtown LA and I'll take either the Amtrak or the Metrolink. Metrolink is normally on time or even a few minutes early but Amtrak is always late. I have not ridden the Amtrak where it's been on time. And when it's late, it's usually about 10-20 minutes late, which I don't think is acceptable but understanding that this is more of a passenger train and not a commuter train, I guess I can give it some slack. Seats are more comfortable than Metrolink and it'll skip all of the smaller stations (ie. Buena Park, sometimes Norwalk, Commerce) so that saves time. read more
