This was my first visit at this theatre. I found it to be easy to select seats and purchase tickets. The staff was friendly and personable. The seats were clean and comfortable. Unfortunately, the movie we chose decided not to play as we were all waiting to watch. The manager came in an explained that there was a problem and compensated us with tickets for another movie or to come back on another day. I found this to be great business. This movie theatre has always been amazing but they have gone above and beyond!!! Amstar has added reclining Lea their seats in this theatre and I am flipping out. FYI, if you only have cash, you have to "convert" it to a card to buy tickets, etc. They charge an extra $3.00 just to "convert" the card! So your 11.00 movie actually cost $14.00! Took 2 teens who brought their own cash!! Justin, the manager, doesn't have a problem with this policy ( of course he is an adult with a card). Girls gave me their money and used my card!! Okayyyyyy sooooooooo we kinda sorta bought tickets the Saturday night and totally intended on making it Sunday at 12:30pm. Well didn't work out that way. We missed the movie. We called and couldn't get anyone on the line so we just decided to go and speak with someone and see what could be done. The let us speak to the manager and he was amazing. He let us swap the tickets to a current showing and helped me add the tickets to my Reel Rewards. We really appreciated his understanding and his help. He was very pleasant. Alabaster Amstar is a great hometown theater. Located at the Promenade, this theater boasts ample parking and I think 10 screens. I've been going here for 10 years and I've never had a negative experience. The popcorn is always hot and fresh plus they have other typical theater fare like candy and nachos. Also, the last time I went I noticed they've started serving alcoholic beverages! While you're waiting for your movie to start, they have a game area with air hockey, video games, and claw games. I just went yesterday with my mom and it was a bad experience from the beginning. The boy giving the tickets made a big deal about where to sit. Made a big deal about picking a seat. Why? I will do as I have done since I was a teen pick an unoccupied seat ..jeesh second the bathrooms were not cleaned and havent been cleaned in awhile from most not having soap in them, paper towels empty, toliet paper all over the floor.. just nasty!! So you payed all that money to get fabulous seats but then thats as far as it goes right. You would think with streaming biting off your profits more and more you would care a bit more about those actually going to the movies. Believe me a nice, uncrowded , less expensive experience is to b had at home with a bathroom steps away lol Bet anyones bathroom is better than that !!! Personally I have zero wants to go here again. The teens who work here are zombies , no personality. The movie itself was a torture to get through (not the theaters fault) please beware no proceeds go to help the children if you watch Sound of freedom. OH and the movie didnt start for 28 min. 28 min of ads it should have started at 11 it started at exactly 28 min. I had watched Jhope and it was like 15 min max of ads. So 28 of my minutes were wasted and you pay for this! Lol nope! My time is valuable and it will not happen again. Streaming it will b from now on!!! Been to the movies the last 2 weekends finally something worth going to see. The theater is clean and comfortable. Environmental's are working well and enhancing the experience. I use the fandango app and skip the line and use my watch or phone for admission. No more managing my tickets or stubs, a big plus. read more

I frequently go to this theater as it is conveniently located to me and is usually less crowded than some of the others located in town. I've had good experiences each time. The wait time in the lines to buy tickets and snacks are very short. Also parking isn't that bad. The bathrooms have always been clean during my visits, and I have been various times throughout the day/evening. The seats in the theater are average/comfortable. It would be nice if they offered reclining leather seats. I have ways had good customer service and experiences during my visits. read more

Was in the area and thought I would grab a movie. The staff here is always very friendly and helpful. Was trying to get my Movie Pass card to work and the kiosk was down. They were quick to offer assistance and get me gong to my movie. Not as large as the AMC theaters in the area, they have plenty of parking and seating and rarely is an issue trying to catch a movie at the time you want to see it. Theaters seating is spacious and the screen and sound quality is really good. Seats are also very comfortable. Theater in general is really clean and it looks like they clean out each of the theaters after each showing. Plus, before or after the movie, there are quite a few places to grab a bite to eat in the shopping complex. Would recommend this theater to others and wouldn't mind catching a movie here another time. read more

This is one of the few non AMC owned theaters left in the area. It's located within a promenade with a lot of other shops and restaurants. Service here is generally really fast. The interior of the theater itself is a little dated. It's kept pretty clean which is a plus. If you're used to more modern style theaters, you'd be left disappointed with the lack of amenities here, such as other food/snack choices, reclining seats, ect. ect. The seats here aren't the most comfortable and I've found in comparison the screen size is also on the smaller end. It's a overall okay and decent theater, but I've experienced better and you may have as well. It serves its purpose. read more

We saw Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker here. We arrived 20 minutes before the movie started on opening weekend. The theater was clean and not crowded at all. They also offer a military or veteran discount on tickets. There was no line for refreshments, popcorn was fresh and extra butter was free. Also, the bathrooms were cleaner than the AMC theater in Hoover. This will be our go-to theater from here on out. read more

Finally Alabaster has upgraded their theater to all digital picture and sound. The screens are on the small side compared to Rave now Carmike theaters but if you live in South Shelby County this is the theater to go to without having to drive. The theaters are always clean and the staff seems to take pride in that so there really is no bad thing to say about this place. They also have a Rewards Program that is free to join. read more

My original review from 2010 is below, but the chain has since addressed both of my primary criticisms. To point 1: Amstar now shows as many trailers as any other chain in town, and that makes me happy. To point 2: Everything is digital now, so there is no compromise in sound quality compared to the theatres further north. And to add an additional point, Rave lost a little bit of its sexiness when it was bought by Carmike, although those theatres are perfectly fine, as well. ----------- Since this theatre is the closest to my house, it is where I watch the most movies. However, the two things I desire the most when going to the movies are not the best at AmStar. 1. I like lots of movie trailers, certainly more than two, and that's all you get at Amstar. I know some people prefer getting straight to the movie, but not me. If you don't like trailers, this place is for you unless my number two objection is an issue for you. 2. State-of-the-art audio/video projection. The sound quality here is fine, so I have no criticism of that, but while other theatres in Birmingham metro are using digital projection and the newest technologies, Amstar is still using the traditional projectors which require properly framing the picture and can include displaying scratches and imperfections on the film. For my money, I would rather have a Rave theatre within short driving distance, but with that being said, the people at Amstar are friendly enough, concession prices are comparable to other theatre chains, and the theatre is clean and without odor. read more

All of the rain last night ruined our original plan for the day. Movie time. Son wanted to see the new Transformer movie. This theatre had far more options for for that particular movie today. Generally, I prefer the Rave. The individual screening rooms are larger, with more ample seating, additional restrooms near the individual theaters vs having to go back to the lobby etc.... I've read how nobody likes the AMC take over of Rave so we came here today. They have finally gotten a kiosk inside which is much faster than waiting in the perpetually understaffed ticket booth. After the purchase of a giant frozen Coke for my son we went through to find our theatre. All of the employees were friendly. Our theatre was empty upon our arrival. Soon thereafter maybe a 8-10 other patrons arrived. For whatever reason they all had to sit far nearer to us than I felt necessary. Nonetheless, we enjoyed the movie. The interior was clean. The temperature in the theatre had my son wishing he brought a hoodie. All in all a pretty good experience. The Amstar chain doesn't offer as many discount ticket opportunities and specials on snacks as the Rave/ Carmikes and the rewards program is infuriating. Every time you attempt to use the reward card it's changed to a different program, they've changed it over that offer expired and so on.I'd rather they not offer rewards if they're not planning to honor them ever. Based upon Yelpers reviews of the new AMC Theaters this may soon be my best available option. read more

My husband once applied for a job with Amstar and when he asked about it, the manager seemed annoyed. VERY unprofessional. With that said, the rest of the people are very friendly and they have fair prices. I know that the equipment isn't the best, but that means lower prices. Which is fine by me. I took my 4 year old daughter to her very first matinee & was thoroughly disappointed that the kids tray (popcorn, drink & snack item) had "sold out". That was terrible since it was the only real bargain on the menu. It didn't help that the guy behind the counter moved like a snail & had the nerve to display an attitude when I didn't decline his offer to give me my receipt. Why in the heck do you ask customers if they want a receipt anyway? Surely you can afford printer paper since you're charging these outrageous prices! Full digital picture and sound in a clean and friendly environment. These theaters are always clean. No sticky floors or funky smelling seats that I've experienced in some other theaters. Benches inside to sit on while you wait on tiny bladdered people to get ready for the show. For $10 the stub collector will carry you to your seat. Minus one star for lack of horse noises and the $10 cost for joining the Rewards Program. read more

We love this theater!!!! Always super friendly staff, super clean and very comfy seats. We really take advantage in the summer months during their discounted kid flicks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the time kids are out of school. The package includes a small drink and popcorn. Plenty of parking as well. Of course if you go during regular showings the price of treats are a little high, but they all are at theaters. If you are hungry before or after the show there are several very good restaurants all within walking distance as well. read more

I was very excited that they started serving beer and wine at this theater since almost no theaters in Birmingham offer it. However, the employee serving it makes it very clear to you that you are an evil person for ordering alcohol and that you may be condemning her to hell for making her serve it to you. It was such an unpleasant experience trying to order it from her that I ended up apologizing to her for having ordered it. She proceeded to tell me what a terrible idea she thinks it is and how unhappy it she is that she has to be a part of it. The theaters have different size screens far as I can tell. To get the biggest screen you need to choose showings at the screen that has two sides to enter, left or right. Since I usually attend alone or with no one I desire to share my popcorn with, I get the kids tray, but I was disappointed to see, as of March 2014 they have raised this tray from the 5 to 7 dollar range. That is quite a jump. Yes, they changed the shape of the tray so it looks like you might be getting one more handful of popcorn, and they changed to a black cup, but it's all a gimmick. I always buy from the refreshment stand because I realize that theaters count on the snack bar to make a profit. But I maintain that going from 5 something to 7 something is still too much. read more
