I called for a quote of a diagnostic for a solid state cabinet amplifier and head unit that is having issues with weak signal. Instead of starting the conversation by simply giving me what the bench fee would be, he basically told me that cost to repair is likely not worth it in comparison to purchasing a replacement; which is not true since the cabinet alone is $400 new. He turned down my business because it was "a pain in the ass to work on". **STAY AWAY** I brought my amp to Phil to get modded. He also suggested changing the screen resistors and power tubes, which I agreed to. After 2 months of not hearing anything, Phil told me there was a problem with the amp and it had low output. I was patient with him and allowed him to take his time to fix it. After about another 2 months, he stated that he "could not help me" and to come to pick up the amp. He was intentionally vague about this whole interaction to obviously avoid any admission of fault. After taking it to a competent tech, I found out that the output transformer is blown and will cost me at least $400 to fix. I brought him a working amp, and he gave me back a broken amp with no explanation. Throughout the entire time of working with him, Phil was aggressive, abrasive, and condescending in his communication. I was nothing less than professional and patient with him. He clearly lacks integrity and does not own his mistakes. His character and morals are reflected in his communication. I would strongly advise against using Phil's services. He is not competent, and he is not trustworthy. If you care about your amp, take it somewhere else. I can bet any response he gives to this will be an obvious shift of blame onto anything but himself. (Point Proven) *Update* - My new tech found the source of the blown transformer, it was a wire pinched to the chassis from when Phil was installing the switch that i asked him to install to the C137 capacitor. So yes, Phil fried the transformer. Also, Phil is just fabricating some complete nonsense in his response. The amp was never modded and I brought it to him in full working condition, it did not have low output. The attached picture was sent to me by Phil of him pointing at the UNMODDED capacitor I wanted Phil to clip and install to a switch (see the comment in the email about that "chicken leg"). Phil, your integrity is truly nonexistent. You really spent all that time fabricating a lie to defend your mistake? Breaking my amp wasn't enough for you. I have a Peavey Valve King 100 that just stopped working one day. I checked the fuse and replaced it. The light came on, but no sound. I needed to take it in somewhere. I came across Ampmedic after searching online. I requested a quote and Phil called me right away. I made an appointment to drop it off. We met and talked. He's very knowledgeable and has been doing this for many years. After a week of communication via emails with what was going on with my amp and pictures my amp was fixed. Turns out there are internal fuses that are soldered to the board and I had some bad tubes. So I now have new fuses and all new matching power tubes and the bias set. Long story short my amp stopped working. I called Phil and answered a few easy questions about the amp (JVM410H). We set up an appointment to look at the amp. It was immediately evident that Phil is extremely knowledgeable. He had me stay a while which I found very cool and open. My Yamaha B-2 amp had been in storage 25 years. Its didn't quite work properly before I stored it. When I contacted Phil he made an appointment for me that day (Saturday). When I got there he explained to me that he doesn't normally work on solid state amps but would take a look. He emailed me the following Tuesday, and explained very clearly what he had found. When I picked up the Amp he did a complete explaination of what he had done and a written reciept of the same discussion. Terrible experience. I wanted to warn anyone thinking of going here. I went to his shop/garage for his, "Free Bench Test". His work area and whole demeanor seemed very unprofessional to me. Right down to his T-Shirts and business cards with a line through the old phone number and the new written in with a Sharpie. But he seemed to be very knowledgable. He took a look under the hood, and pointed out all the things he wanted to replace (First red flag - this was an all original 1964 amp and he wanted to replace EVERY capacitor and tube). His estimate was $500 to $600 PLUS parts. This was a bit steep for me, considering I bought the amp for $350 (20 years ago) and it still played well. So wanting the repairs, but not having that much money to lay down at the time, I decided to wait. But I felt bad for taking up his time (most of it listening to him brag about himself) so I asked him to let me pay something for his trouble. He declined and reminded me that this was a "Free Bench Check". Then he offered me $500 to buy the amp. I thought to myself, "it needs $600 worth of repair and he wants to buy it for 5". Something didn't add up. I told him I didn't want to sell it and at this point he got very visibly angry. He started cursing and slamming tools and muttered about how I was wasting his time. But then the offer went to $600 and then $700. I didn't know the amp's value at the time so I asked him if I could think about it and he said no. That was enough for me. I told him I wan't interested and then he demanded that I pay him $50 per my earlier offer. I did offer and my amp was still in pieces on his bench. So I checked my wallet - I did not have $50. Long story short, I went on PayPal and transferred $50 to him. He made sure the transaction showed up in his account before he gave me the amp back to leave. I'm not saying he was holding the amp hostage, but he made it very uncomfortable and difficult to get out of there. But he finally handed me the amp back and a handful of screws and I was on my way. I felt violated. The whole experience really shook me up. I don't think he did anything illegal or unethical - just bad business. I think his intention from the start was to buy the amp and so he inflated the repair estimate and became he was very angry when I didn't want to sell it. I ended up taking the same amp to a highly respected repairman who does audio work for many bands and shows and clubs on the strip. His fees were more than the average repair shop I checked, but he came highly recommended and had a nice facility. He advised me to "do nothing to it". It played well and would be worth more in it's original condition. I wanted to play it - not sell it and at the very least, I wanted to replace the cord with a three pronged plug and remove the so-called "death cap". He did this and some other minor things. He charged me $120 and gave me back all the replaced parts in a baggy - offering to re-install them if I ever wanted to sell it in all-original condition. The moral to this story... go to someone who is interested more in repair and customer service rather than buying and selling amps like this guy. Also, make sure you know the value of your amp before you take it to ANYONE. read more

I recently had Phil (the Amp Medic) fix a buzzing sound in my favorite Fender "Custom Shop" Vibroverb amplifier. He not only found the offending and CHEAP AZZ Chinese tube that was rattling at volume levels above #4, but he replaced all the cheap AZZ tubes that Fender Custom Shop installed in my EXPENSIVE "Custom Shop" Vibroverb. After Phil worked on the amp, it can melt stainless steel from 50 yards and yet it has all the bottom end and tone that one would expect from a true "Custom Shop" Fender Amp! I was NOT at all happy to find out that Fender would put JUNK Chinese SHIT tubes at the Custom Shop and then let it go out the door with thier stamp of approval... just to make more money! Fender just dropped to the bottom of the pile regarding my opinion of their "Custom Shop" line amps. Fender would be better to call it the "Costume Shop". Next time, I will to go direct to Phil when looking for a new amp before I ever again trust Fender or any other manufacturer to deliver what they claim. When I pulled my old Fender Princeton Chrorus out of storage and plugged it in after 10+ years, it sounded so bad that I thought it was totally broken and almost just bought a new one. I've had Ampmedic work on 3 vintage amps so far; a '54 Fender Pro, Blond Tolex Tremolux and an Ampeg Gemini 1. All of which had succumb to their age with various issues. Leave your preconceived ideas of what you think you know about vintage amp tone at the door. I know I learned a few thing over the years that I thought to be true were soon disproved. What I learned about Phil's approach is that he is very analytical. Starting at a point and working through to yield a positive result. Yes he is opinionated, but he's not there to appease your electronic egos and voodoo believes. He uses high quality parts and tries to return the amp to its vintage glory. His work is tidy and thorough, and he wants you completely satisfied with the tone achieved. Seeing some of the other work he does on "high end" vintage tube audio amps made me feel comfortable having him work on my projects. Comparing the complexity of audio circuits he resurrects to my old amps put me at ease. I have had the pleasure of working with Phil at Ampmedic for a few years now. I gave him the insurmountable task of re-building a 55+ year old tube amp (Harman Kardon Citation II). I have a Fender Blues Jr. I purchased the BillM modifications for it from the BillM website. Thought I could figure it out. Was lost in about 30 seconds. Searched high and low for someone who had a clue and would do the modifications locally. Talked with Phil from Ampmedic over the phone and realized he's the real deal, so I met with him, talked about what i wanted, handed him my amp and the parts I purchased. He worked on each of the 11 modifications I wanted one at a time untill they worked perfect! Took a while had to borrow an amp from a friend to gig with, but what i got back was a work of art. I can't tell you how happy I am with the work Phil did. When I went to pick up my amp. Phil had it ready to go with 2 guitars, ready to play. Told me I had to give it a try before he would let me leave. He went through all the modifications, talked about getting good tone, maintenance, and somethings he would add in the future to the amp.
