La Casita

La Casita

I'd seen some terrible reviews of La Casita online but if being a person who writes online…read morerestaurant reviews teaches you anything, it's when other ones are not totally legit. So I ignored them and went anyway and I'm glad I did because it was a really delicious, good value meal with great friendly service. Rich and I shared the choriqueso and the guacamole bowl to start. The choriqueso as you may be able to guess is a ton of chorizo with a ton of melted cheese. Of course this was bloody delicious. The guacamole was good too, I'm not sure what was achieved by it being in a tortilla bowl but it definite didn't detract from anything. For mains I had tacos el pastor and Rich had fajitas with chicken and chorizo. The tacos were great - no weird hard shells here - and the filling very tasty. If I had any complaints here it would be that the meat had a slightly 'chalky' aftertaste, so possibly I'd try another taco filling on another visit. The hot sauce that comes with the tacos is pretty bloody hot, believe them when they say that. Rich's only complaint was that the fajitas came with a large amount of filling and only two small tortillas. To drink I had a bottle of Sol and a very good, very strong margarita. Rich had a pint of lager and a rum and coke. For two starters, two mains and four drinks we paid around £50 which I thought was pretty good. I'll definitely be back! I just hope it sticks around as businesses seem to come and go in this location (so go support them!).

A layer of lettuce sat on top with cream served with pico de gallo (Fresh Mexican salsa), and a spicy dipping sauce. The pulled pork was juicy and full of flavour, the outside was nice and crispy, and the spicy sauce was the perfect addition. I made a major foodie error, and ordered the Cochinita Pibil burrito for my main, which is basically an upsacle non-fried version of the Chimichangas - in my defence: PULLED PORK! The Cochinita Pibil was slow cooked pulled-pork marinated in oranges, lime and traditional Mayan flavouring, and was spot on! I HAVE NO REGRETS The restaurant is a quaint little place at the Chorlton end of Barlow Moor Road, with a large open window and terrace, which is great on a warm Summers' night like on the night I visited. The inside is filled with Mexican style décor, like an awesome painting depicted Cinco de Mayo celebrations. The price was very reasonable and service was great, friendly and attentive, and I will definitely return to sample the guacamole, and bigger variety of their dishes.

Even though it is a "chain", I like Mexican food and the person who is behind it won Masterchef years ago and there most be a reason why she has several branches of Wahaca around the country (I think about 27) and they have been around for more than 10 years. We decided to order a few things each and basically share. The friendly, helpful waitress, suggested how many of the different types of items to get per person. We got mostly tacos and was suggested to get either 2 each (plus a side) or 3 each. We had: Chargrilled steak taco Battered cod taco Carnitas taco (which was one of the specials) Plantain taco Buttermilk chicken taco Black bean & three cheese quesadillas Overall they all tasted good. I am not that big a fan of plantain so it just tasted OK. Also, I thought I didn't like black beans (I like the ones you have in Chinese dishes - the fermented dried ones) but I really liked the quesadillas. Maybe it was the combination with the cheese. The tacos were good - my favourite was the buttermilk chicken ones. (I didn't specifically say anything about coriander so luckily it was just mostly on the top of the tacos - and not too much. Phew!).

Situated in the upcoming revamped Corn Exchange building, you have a decent amount of seating in and outdoors (well a lot in the fake outdoors in the internal courtyard...) and it's bright, airy and generally doesn't feel too chainy. The food we had was all great - tasty crab and avocado tostadas, chicken tinga taco's and a really nice guac with nacho's. Having cooked a number of recipes (and the Tinga being a regular go-to meal) from Thomasina's cookery books, I still have to say mine taste better though ;-P Prices were fairly decent but the beer selection needs improving a lot. They just sell Mexican lager which isn't too shocking I can imagine but there's no other options in terms of beers and even Las Iguanas now sells Mexican IPA, Wheat Beers etc. Put it this way - I was wanting a beer but just decided to keep my money in my pocket and drink water. I'm sure I'll be back again regularly as it's the best restaurant Mexican in town (Pancho's will always be getting my casual burrito money though) - a welcome addition to the foodie scene.

I'm a native Texan who frequently visits Doncaster to visit my husband's family (he's from Donny)…read more And, if I can give Cactus Jack's 4 out of 5 stars, that's pretty darn good! We have been here a few times over the years and have always been impressed with the food. Here, in Texas, we're used to a certain type of 'Texas-down-home-cookin' and Cactus Jack's gets as close to it as I'd expect in the UK. The ribs and chicken dishes are very good (better than some of the places here in Houston). The service is good, and that's saying a lot from us overly demanding Americans. The portion sizes are generous by UK standards. The part I love the best is the interior design. The restaurant isn't just Southwest themed, it's like walking into an old saloon. There is a old school jail cell in the back you can have dinner in. There's tons of gnarly wood everywhere. One time when we were in there, there was a whole troop of older people dressed in Western wear. It was awesome. I did have to correct them once because they had the Texas flag hanging upside down, but I can forgive them on it (people in the USA in other states would get it wrong too). They did fix it and I was satisfied. The only totally weird thing is the waffle dessert. In the USA, waffles are not dessert items, we eat them for breakfast. They do not taste sugary or have little lumps of sugar inside of them. We don't top them with ice cream and chocolate sauce. But honestly, the waffle dessert at Cactus Jack's is so good, maybe we should! If you live in the Donny area and haven't been... Go! Try it out! This is a recommendation from a real Texan who has a cactus somewhere in the vicinity (Houston is actually kinda like a jungle).

The atmosphere from entry has icy and unwelcoming, older grey haired man behind the counter (said Richard on the receipt, but unsure) was clearly having a bad day, as we noticed from the beginning that he was very rude to every customer and employee that he encountered. Every thing we said to him was met with a rude sarcastic comment and eye-roll, think he thought it was under his breath but we could obviously hear him. Felt uncomfortable and intimidated the entire time, we got the impression that had we not been two young women the service would have been better. At many points we gave him grace that we may have been mistaking his attitude, but after the appalling experience I can truly say that he was just a rude man. Me and my family have been regulars at sfc for several years, and always make a point of recommending it. We make the choice to order from the store rather than getting it delivered because the service is normally wonderful. After today we will be honestly never returning. As two women who work in hospitality, we know what it can be like, but this was excessive and intimidating. This man needs customer service training, and if he is a manger, I feel genuinely sorry the employees. Anticipating someone from Sfc responding so I can provide more details. Thanks.

This review is bittersweet. It's sweet because this was the…read moremost delicious Mexican food I have had in a long long time. It's bitter because as of 12th January 2020 ... this restaurant will be closed . I was told to try this restaurant by multiple people on a Facebook group and when I heard it was closing, I knew I had to come up especially to try it before it closes. This being the first time I've tried an authentic Mexican restaurant (one that isn't Taco Bell or barburrito (nothing wrong with those places by the way, I love them too)) I didn't know what to expect. I checked the menu before hand to see if I could order something (I noticed there was calamari, octopus and prawns and other things I haven't tried yet) but saw there was old faithful chicken and steak. I think part of the reason it closed was because it was a little hard to find. Luckily I go around the street often on my way to forbidden planet so I had an idea where it was. I got into the place fine and noticed it looked a little like it's parent restaurant (solita) with its layout and decor. This isn't a bad thing btw ... it fits in well with the trendy norther quarter kink. For some it could have been a bad thing but I didn't mind, but when I got in, I got seen to fairly quickly but the only 1 seat available was next to the till and near the kitchen, I didn't mind as I could have a peek into how to make Mexican food .. although I was near the prep area so I pooped out of luck there. The place was busy though so there was a little wait, but I didn't mind, I didn't have anywhere else to be and was able to read a small chapter of my book. I ordered a starter of tostada volcanos with steak (I was worried volcanos meant spicy but it didn't ) followed by a main of tinga de pollo quesadilla and a side or tortilla chips. For some reason they arrived out of order with the quesadilla first and then the others came shortly afterwards .. which is fine coz usually I want it all rather than the starter, then to wait. Omg .. it was all delicious ... the quesadilla was super tasty with the perfect amount of meat, cheese and a little kick which I like. The tortilla chips were multicoloured and really crispy and freshly made .. none of the store bought ones. However I found them a little dry but my uncultured heathen self usually has salsa with them .. which I may have been able to ask for but hey ho. The tostada was out of this world ... sometimes steak can be cooked and be chewy but this was glorious ... it melted in my mouth and there was no struggle to chew it. If I could have 3 tonne of it, I would have. The whole staff were super nice and I wish them the very best in their future of whatever is in store and I am super sad that I only tried the place the day before it closed. I shall always remember the best Mexican food I have had in Manchester though.
