Great portion size and authentic flavor throughout. Go before 6pm and get 25% off the whole bill! I would have given it 5 stars but for a few family unfriendly placards on the wall - but why throw out a Rolls Royce for a little scratch?! I recommend Fiesta Latino for Mexican food in the York area: good food better price! I'll be back for sure

Also they have 25% off the bill between 4pm and 6pm everyday and watch for Tuesday and Sunday as this is student night where they get 50% off. It has a Mexican themed interior with a lively atmosphere spread over two levels. We ordered the Nachos Cowabunga sharer to start ,Nachos fully loaded with chilli beef ,chilli chicken ,cheese ,bacon bits, scallions and soured cream ,it was huge ,could easily do 4 people. For mains we had -Beef Buritto which came with guacamole, cream, black beans and rice and the Mexi Burger ,which was a 9oz burger covered in beef chilli served with curly fries salad and cowslaw. Both were very large portions and we struggled to finish them The food quality, service and lively atmosphere all added to a great experience, check it out.

*NOTE*…read more EL GRINGOS HAS NOW SHUT DOWN IN YORK ----------- El Gringos is fantastic. However, I probably wouldn't say this if I wasn't a student (us lucky guys and gals get 50% off on Sunday/Tuesday). There's a massive dish called the Belly Buster with the most horrific amount of meat ever. You just get this big pile of meat which is impossible for any human to consume. In fact, me and my GF couldn't even finish one between us...or get anywhere near. Also worth noting are the cheap cocktails, £10 for a massive pitcher, which has left me and my friends a little bit on the jolly side after a big meal. Oh, and when I say massive I mean it! The food isn't the greatest in the world and can sometimes be a tad dry but El Gringos definitely takes the American view of Quantity over Quality. Actually, that is a little harsh, the food is good, and is by far the best Mexican in York (with only one competition, as is the way in York!). Oh, also, the service is fantastic and the staff (mainly Hungarian, as I found out) are lovely and really really do their best to make you feel welcome. I can thoroughly recommend El Gringos, especially for students/big parties. Parking: On Lowther St, it's free after 8 I think.

It's another mexican restaurant trying to break into the market in York, as there is only one other Mexican restaurant in town. They offer great student discounts of 50% during the week. We really enjoy eating mexican food but have not yet found one in York that is particularly great. The decor is interesting - they have two large flags hanging in the front windows, one of the american flag and one of the mexican flag.

I ordered a bowl of chili with cheesy garlic bread and chips on the side. I also asked for a water. My dining companion ordered an ale and the Mexican burger. The burger is topped with chili, jalapenos, and normally cheese. He ordered it without. The burger also comes with not only chips but onion rings as well. The drinks came out first and I was happy to see that the ice cubes were crystal clear. He was quite happy with the Black Sheep Ale. The English are notorious for their warm ales and we were curious to check them out. The food arrived promptly. By this time, it was 3 pm and I was starving. The chili was sadly one note. There were no hints of cumin or spice to it at all but it was beanless so that was nice. The chips were the perfect consistency. I didn't even mind putting malt vinegar with my chips at this point. For a ketchup only girl, this is huge. The cheesy garlic bread was made with ciabatta and it was quite tasty. It was also a little greasy too but it was cold out and I wasn't about to complain too much. My dining companion seemed to enjoy his meal as he cleared his plate. Food for me was 3 stars. But they get bumped up an extra star mostly because it seemed like a place that genuine locals liked to visit and that they were kind enough to keep my friend's gloves in a lost & found closet. We realized pretty quickly that he had left them behind so when we came back, they had them for us. I'm sure it happens a lot but it is nice to know that they do keep it in case you come back for it.

The kind where you probably tried to dance on a table, the kind where you definitely felt as though your neck was broken the next day from head banging, the kind where you almost certainly meet a squadron on new best friends because you're having that good a time. (And it's as much to do with the awesome clientele, as the drunkenness, I can tell you.) So, yes. Go to Sandinista for drinks. I know, it's always busy on a weekend. But once you get in there you'll have an amazing time, I'm certain of it. The music policy includes all the classics, something to suit most tastes, without venturing down the processed pop route in any shape or form. They also have regular live music, I believe, which is also commendable. However, you mightn't have noticed, they also serve food. What's that? Yes. Where have you been?! (That question is mostly directed at my own foolish self.) They serve the most excellent tapas. Of course, you can go down the route of fajitas, and such like, but on this occasion I wanted a range of foods to stuff. Oh my word. So, firstly, a special mention must be made of the mushrooms in peppercorn sauce. They were absolutely flipping divine - perfectly cooked, soaked in flavour, and the sauce was out of this world. The meatballs were also fabulous, with a delicious tomato sauce, and the garlic bread was beautiful. The crispy pork belly was wonderful, and came with an amazing apricot (?) compote (?!). The patatas were also addictively tasty, especially with melted cheese and spring onion. Of course, the service was fantastic, as ever, but the discovery that there's yet another place to eat fantastically made, freshly cooked, delicious bites is the thing I'll be shouting about for the moment. Dishes come in around £4, which makes it incredibly affordable to try a few different things, and perhaps even splash out on one of their yummy cocktails. Of course, there's the danger that you'd go for tea and not quite make it out until 4am, but hey -it wouldn't be such a bad thing would it? In fact, top idea Batman, Sherlock and Brian Cox, you geniuses. Even the door signage says, "You can check out any time you like but you can never leave." Of course, I'm thinking The Eagles must have been to Leeds. And, given half the chance, I'd say this to be true. I checked-in, but my mind clearly hasn't left them yet. Nom.

However, there was a £27 Tuesday special on for 2 steak dinners with a bottle of wine. And I am a sucker for steak. And wine. So yea... Plus it happened to be a Tuesday so I saw it as a sign. Anyway, we walked in and weren't greeted (there were only 2 other couples there) until we sat ourselves down in a cheerful, almost Spanish looking room. The restaurant looks tiny but if you make your way through it's thin corridor-like entrance, there appear two more sections, each with a different feel. The back room is candle-lit with lots of tables while the front bar-area is more casual and relaxed. The upstairs has a glass ceiling and a nice continental feel. Almost moved up there! So we ordered our sirloin which came with onion rings, chips, a small salad, and mushrooms. The steak was good. My boyfriends was perfectly rare and mine was medium rare on the dot. However, the waitress mixed up our orders. It's a good thing we realized it after a single bite. Our tables were sticky which was disappointing. I moved right before we were served rather than complain and the table in the back was sticky/crumby too. The staff was so lovely and friendly though (dealing with my seat changing) that I again didn't say anything. The website describes it as 'Parisian' and 'a slice of Europe' in line with the kind of places Oscar Wilde would frequent. I am unconvinced. The rest of the food options were eclectic ranging from Mexican to Greek to American. A nice assortment if you want to try it. I don't know if I'd come again given all of York's tantalizing eateries. But my steak was nice.

So seemed like a good opportunity to skip the usual Monday duties and hang out a little. We didn't really plan to go to Wilde's but it was there and looked friendly from the outside so dropped in. On the inside it was bright and clean with fresh tulips on the tables and a great open sun room upstairs. The food was plentiful fresh and appetising. Although, hmm, I ordered a Ceasar salad and I don't think it had any of the ingredients you'd usually associate with a Caesar salad, no romaine lettuce, no Parmesan, no lemon and very little dressing. What I did get was a mixed green salad with chicken, cherry tomatoes, salty bacon and croutons and it was rather good! I ate enjoyed, and felt very satisfied afterwards. Overall I cant fault Wilde's, it was a good lunch. I enjoyed seeing big sis, I enjoyed the salad and the coffee too. Oh! and extra points for the mad wallpaper in the bathooms! Brilliant :-)

Because of this, I had gone past it on Kirkstall Road for years, without really ever noticing it, but a group of my friends have been eating there every week for the last few months, and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I joined them a few weeks back. It's the sort of place with that has an effortlessly cool decor and atmosphere - the dark wooden interior and loud (but not too loud) music are the main reason that the place has such an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Onto the food - I've eaten tapas in Spain a fair few times, and I have to say, this place recreates the real thing better than anywhere else I've eaten at, including a few places IN Spain. The usual dishes are present, but they all seem elevated to a higher level than other tapas bars - particularly the chorizo and the olive bread. Oh my. In short, it's authentic, it's cheap, it has an amazing atmosphere and attracts amazing people, and it should be tried by anyone remotely interested in tapas.

Surely it would make more sense to bring out 3 or 4 dishes at a time.
