Didn't know they sell snacks at the library.

It's been a while since I visited a library. I used to go to libraries to do research or to borrow books on tape, then books on CD, now I'm dating myself. With the advent of the internet, more specifically Google, I strayed away from libraries. I went to the Amherst Main Library at Audubon to get a new library card. They have come a long way since the old card catalog. Looking up locations of books and things is very easy to do on the cataloge terminals. The staff was very helpful answering questions. I remember when no food was allowed in libraries but now they have a selection of snacks for sale sitting right on the checkout counter. Cool. I hear this branch is building an addition to increase floor space. Can't wait to see what they do.

I love libraries and this one is pretty nice. They always bring back good childhood memories. Still remember the first time I wandered out of the childrens section to get books. Boy oh boy I just knew at that point I was an adult (at maybe 12)! They're going to be expanding the library next year. They're enlarging the community space and adding a dedicated children's reading room. Its suppose to be done in 2021. Not sure yet how that's going to effect things while the work is in progress. Found out about a Holistic Lecture Series they have every Tuesday night that currently runs through April. I guess this is it's 9th year but I just discovered it. Quite a variety of topic and definitely plan on checking out a few. Another little thing. I love their doors that automatically open. Usually doesn't matter but last time I walked out of there with a huge bag of books on the last day of their book sale I really appreciated it!

I love books! I love libraries! This one is great because it also has Sunday hours. There is always something happening here and the staff is very pleasant. Everything is categorized in a way that makes sense and it is enjoyable to walk around and find new things to check out. This place is always busy which is nice to see that people are supportive of the library!

C'mon! Feed your brain!!!…read more THE UP-SIDE: In a crazy world hell-bent on following the teachings of myriad invisible men, it's nice to have an oasis of rational thought to escape to. The Center for Inquiry is just that, and more. I originally visited the Center for Inquiry during the "Toward a New Enlightenment" World Congress it hosted in 2005. During the conference I got to hang with some of the most intelligent people in the world; including world famous physicists, biologists, philosophers, and more. I was most excited to meet evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, atheist writer Sam Harris, and Ann Druyan (wife of the late Carl Sagan). In addition to the wonderful events the Center hosts, it also provides countless other resources and services for those interested in Secular Humanism, Atheism, free thought, and the like. The staff are sharp-minded and personable, and will leave you feeling happy that you turned off your TV in order to do some real "thinking." THE DOWN-SIDE: These are science-minded people. Thus, they can be a little nerdish and dry at times. However, the intellectual rush you'll get out of the Center sponsored events makes it all worth it. THE SUM-IT-UP: The Center for Inquiry is a truly wonderful organization. Were I not an atheist, I'd thank God that it existed. Seeing as I am an atheist, I'll just shut up and think happy (rational!) thoughts.

The room in which the poetry reading was held had a great set up, but it was a little too small to accomodate the number of guests who showed. It was a full house, and they even had to wrestle out some more chairs while one poet was reading, which led to a few distractions for the audience. Oh well! I am looking forward to future events.

But this isn't actually about them , it's about my garbage totes and the Refuse Control Department. I've had a couple of things happen to my totes. The lid broke some how during one of their pickups. It was hanging by one hinge and was very heavy and unwieldy to try to put back on. I called the Department to ask to have the tote replaced. I was informed that it didn't need replacement they could just put a new cover on. Great I was happy with that news and went on with life as normal expecting to hear from them. Or thinking that like the meter readers , they would come and get the lid and exchange it. When it didn't get repaired for another couple of weeks , I contacted them and asked for an update. I was told " well you have to leave it out for us to fix!" Having had no idea how they handled, these things I had taken the tote back into my yard. The lid was replaced and life went on as usual. This time the bar that the machine on the truck uses to pick up the can broke in half. The can had been broken for several..... weeks. At one point the can, in fact after being emptied, was laying on the ground half on the street. Having tried to pick one of those up after a wind storm, I was truly not overjoyed at the prospect of trying to wrestle this thing back up onto its feet again! Time to call the department again to see if they could please replace it. I explained what the problem was and answered all the questions and was told to leave it out and they would be by to pick it up and replace it. Ok well I didn't forget from last time that they expected me to LEAVE IT OUT!!! They didn't say how long it would take so I left it out indefinitely. After several days , and accumulating garbage in my house, I called back and explained the situation, and was told ..... "You're only supposed to leave it out for the day not the week!" Feeling like I simply can't win , I said I had left it out for the "day" and ( frankly too afraid to bring it back in in case I created a problem again)it had never gotten picked up. There was a pause on the other end of the phone and then I heard " I don't see anything about a broken tote to be picked up here." Back to square one. Today I waited to see the fate of my garbage tote. I heard the garbage truck come. I heard the recycle truck come. I finally looked out to check and see and I'm very happy to say that this time the broken tote was gone and a replacement was in its place!! To the gentleman who never left the instructions that my tote was broken I say " why" and ask how is a customer follow instructions if they aren't given any specific instructions. To the second gentleman who followed through at the Town of Amherst Department of Refuse, I say Thank You ! This lady really appreciates not trying to wrestle the tote off the ground when it falls over off the lift!

Most 300 level were in small classrooms. The north campus building are very odd looking. I was told by a UB staff that this was done purposely. I have visited a handful of other SUNY colleges and UB is by far the biggest and nicest. D1 football here. HORNS UP. Besides the university, Buffalo is a great city to live in. It is considered a large city but is small for being a large city. There are a ton of things to do year round. Amazing food options. Bills and Sabres. If you are interested in the SUNY system, would prefer a large campus and has the major you are wanting I would highly recommend applying to UB.

That said, they do carry an impressively wide range of items for resident students, from toiletries to kitchenware to decor, along with the expected textbooks, and usual clothing and merch. The store is huge, logically organized, and spacious. The bulk of the products on offer seem to be branded clothing - shirts, pants, socks, hats, mittens, you name it, you'll likely find it. These items are quite pricey - $32 for a t-shirt is far too rich for me, especially since we're talking about average quality cotton with a Buffalo Bulls logo on it. I did, however find some leggings that looked like a good bang for the buck, thick spandex/lycra, look to be well cut, and with pockets, for $16.99, so I snagged a pair for myself and a pair for my daughter. There are toys and children's items, tools and supplies for school, and a fair bit of candy and some low level convenience food (think ramen). The textbooks themselves are available in a range of brand new to well used, so it's nice to be able to find used ones at lower prices. My daughter could not resist a unique plushie, which is a white plague nurse. She looks like an owl and her little lantern actually glows in the dark. Not a steal for $29 but not the worst deal in the store. There's plenty of parking, but no washrooms. There is a sort of plaza beside the bookstore which does have washrooms, and plenty of food retailers, kind of like a food court, but nicer, because the stores are actual shops, and the central area with the tables is a little cozier than your usual mall food court. The staff in the store are friendly enough. I regretted, however, giving out my e-mail address. I didn't need it for the receipt, because I paid in cash, and then I found myself getting way too much spam by the time I arrived home in Canada after a couple of days. I tried to use the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of one of them, but it didn't work. Please just ask me how I'm going to pay before collecting data you don't need (but probably want to use.) I can't say I'd feel the need to go back next time we visit stateside, but it was worth popping in.
