This is my 1900th review because the cops in question belonged back in 1900, rather than in the…read more21st century. I prefer to call them the "University Cease" as in "Cease & Desist" as in, harrassing me and arresting me for no reason at all. I've talked to cops who are friends and to lawyers and to the DA of Amherst about what happened in this review, and they've all encouraged me to take action about it, but I decided not to bother. However I'm happy to put it in writing because it happened and it could happen to you. I was using the computers here at UB thanks to my gf, who had lent me her password. I was a student down in Virginia, up here for the summer, and nobody else was around. Our internet at our place wasn't working. A police guy came by and asked if I was a student. I said "yes, I'm a student." He left. Later, he followed me to my car, and asked to see ID. I showed him ID, and he immediately arrested me because I was not a UB Student. I reminded him that he'd asked if I was a student, not if I was a UB Student, but he said that regardless of my opinion, it was "false personation" and then I spent the night in a jail cell. So we all paid for my arrest with our tax dollars for this. Fair enough. Of course I didn't get charged with anything and the DA threw it out. Six months later I was on campus, visiting friends, and walking back to my car late at night, and he spotted me. He asked for ID. I showed him. He remembered me, and assured me I was "violating my ban" since I was "banned from UB." I assured him that I'd never been banned from UB, and he arrested me anyway. He kept me in jail again. "Trespassing" was the charge this time. Again, it was thrown out, and the DA got very angry. She said she'd be following up and finding out why this particular officer was harrassing me. No charges. No problems for me except 2 random nights in jail for doing absolutely nothing. He was very aggressive in the way he arrested me too. I didn't even remotely resist. It basically amounted to him being bored, and not liking me. If visiting friends or using computers at a University where your gf is a student, is a crime, then a hell of a lot of people will get arrested. So because one man from this police department harrassed me and wasted 2 nights of my life in a jail cell and 2 days of my life in court only for those charges to be thrown out, I'm giving this department a 1-star rating. And as much as I know some lovely cops, between these personal experiences, and then all of the much-publicized shooting deaths (I should say, murders) perpetrated by cops recently... it's hard for me to have a very positive opinion of the police force in general. On the other hand, I've had some great police experiences, so more power to them and my love to all of the good cops out there. And my apologies to anyone at the UB PD who are good cops and good men, but this guy is not. He is a menace, and since he's my only real example of UB cops, and I can't review him individually (I have his name, and will never forget it, but I won't put it here because I don't want him trying to come after me or something), I have to review the whole department. One funny thing I remember is that his friend, the guy with a moustache who helped bring me in, muttered to me when the jerk wasn't listening, that "he doesn't know what this guy's problem is, and not to worry, I'll be out by morning." The police. Serving and protecting all of us. Awesome.

But this isn't actually about them , it's about my garbage totes and the Refuse Control Department. I've had a couple of things happen to my totes. The lid broke some how during one of their pickups. It was hanging by one hinge and was very heavy and unwieldy to try to put back on. I called the Department to ask to have the tote replaced. I was informed that it didn't need replacement they could just put a new cover on. Great I was happy with that news and went on with life as normal expecting to hear from them. Or thinking that like the meter readers , they would come and get the lid and exchange it. When it didn't get repaired for another couple of weeks , I contacted them and asked for an update. I was told " well you have to leave it out for us to fix!" Having had no idea how they handled, these things I had taken the tote back into my yard. The lid was replaced and life went on as usual. This time the bar that the machine on the truck uses to pick up the can broke in half. The can had been broken for several..... weeks. At one point the can, in fact after being emptied, was laying on the ground half on the street. Having tried to pick one of those up after a wind storm, I was truly not overjoyed at the prospect of trying to wrestle this thing back up onto its feet again! Time to call the department again to see if they could please replace it. I explained what the problem was and answered all the questions and was told to leave it out and they would be by to pick it up and replace it. Ok well I didn't forget from last time that they expected me to LEAVE IT OUT!!! They didn't say how long it would take so I left it out indefinitely. After several days , and accumulating garbage in my house, I called back and explained the situation, and was told ..... "You're only supposed to leave it out for the day not the week!" Feeling like I simply can't win , I said I had left it out for the "day" and ( frankly too afraid to bring it back in in case I created a problem again)it had never gotten picked up. There was a pause on the other end of the phone and then I heard " I don't see anything about a broken tote to be picked up here." Back to square one. Today I waited to see the fate of my garbage tote. I heard the garbage truck come. I heard the recycle truck come. I finally looked out to check and see and I'm very happy to say that this time the broken tote was gone and a replacement was in its place!! To the gentleman who never left the instructions that my tote was broken I say " why" and ask how is a customer follow instructions if they aren't given any specific instructions. To the second gentleman who followed through at the Town of Amherst Department of Refuse, I say Thank You ! This lady really appreciates not trying to wrestle the tote off the ground when it falls over off the lift!

I think it's great that the campus offers students an ability to make/renew passports. I really appreciate it. What I don't appreciate: Racism. I came in today to get a new passport and when I entered, the worker (an elderly white women) working here was helping a white female student. (I included race for a reason). The worker was very sweet and offered advice and help to the student. But after the student left, it was my turn to get helped. Even before I sat down, I knew she wasn't going to treat me the same as she did with the other student because of the way she looked at me. Maybe it was because I wasn't white. Maybe it's because I'm Korean. I don't know. But once I sat down, she started talking to me as if I'm stupid. Questioning everything I had in my passport application. I missed a couple spots and while I was filling them out she dared to say with a smirk "you aren't very good at filling out forms". She talked slow to me as if I didn't speak English or understand what she was saying. I ignored her and when I gave my passport picture to her, she did not believe it was me!!! I am furious because she even said "They (whoever "they" are) won't accept this picture because this picture isn't you" I took my 2 passport pictures 1-2 months ago but held off the process because I never had time to come to the office. I understand that I didn't make make up on, and that I was breaking out (like a regular human) but she kept on insisting that the picture I was giving in wasn't me. I didn't have some drastic plastic surgery. I didn't do some extravagant make up on my picture either. I am baffled by the service and how rude she was to me. She asked me when I took the picture and I told her 1-2 months and she said "No it has to be longer. This doesn't even look like you". It's disgusting to witness such different treatment because of my race. Very disgusting. I understand Buffalo has a majority white population, but to be judged because she can't comprehend how Asian people look was discouraging. I hope this office hires someone cultured. Or at least someone who isn't going to treat others differently simply because of ones race.

My experience with UB Passport Office was just horrible. At…read morefirst, I thought I was lucky that I can just drop by the place on campus but it turned out to be unpleasant and upsetting. A staff at the office demanded not only my driver's license but also another photo ID and my SSN card even though the driver's license alone should be enough as a primary evidence. (Secondary IDs are needed only when you cannot provide primary evidence.) I thought it was odd but I rationalized her demand because she must know better than me since it is her job and I was totally new to getting a U.S. passport. So I decided to follow 'her instruction' and get a secondary photo ID. She told me to get a new UB card with my new legal name on it. FYI, getting a new UB card costs $13.5. Long story short, the new UB card was rejected (by the same staff who suggested me get it lol) and found presumably unacceptable because the new version of UB card carries the legal name on its backside and the preferred name on the front. Finally, I gave up on UB passport office and went to a local post office. They were quick and professional. They only asked for my driver license. No one asked for secondary photo ID or SSN card. I still don't understand why UB passport office asked for more IDs than what is required by the government. The government website states "You must present one primary ID which includes your photo. If you cannot present one of the primary photo IDs below, please present a combination of at least two secondary IDs." (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/requirements/identification.html) UB Passport office want you to bring BOTH a primary ID AND two secondary IDs. I would like to suggest you think twice before going to the UB passport office, especially if you are a naturalized immigrant.

Save the clock tower! Oh wait this is Amherst, not Hill Valley…read more Barbi is very liberal with the Come-ons when she wants something... I'm the same. We're alphas I guess. This beautiful Clock Tower haunts the grounds of the University of Buffalo North Campus, and is part of the heartbeat of a campus that has grown and adapted quite tremendously over the recent years. If you are coming here for food or bubble tea (which is why I usually come here) then it provides a lovely backdrop to hanging out around here. It's located at the UB Commons. UB Commas is actually a 300-level English class, whereas UB Comatose is any given student after a hard Friday & Saturday night of typical collegiate binge drinking. UB Commodores is a college singing group which covers old Motown hits, and UB Commo Commo Commo Commo Commo Chameleons is a Boy George Fan Group that meets inside Capen Hall every night when the big hand touches the little hand. But this is the UB Commons. I've now spent so much time here I feel like I went to UB. I wish I did because then those two arrests wouldn't have counted. I love hanging out here and I have a lot of friends here, for example at the bubble tea shop (best in WNY by far) and the Korean place and the Persian owned Mexican but actually halal cart place and the Japanese place and the list is endless. Just don't go to the Subway or we can't be friends anymore Yes, the UB Commons are pretty awesome. I've been to more colleges than I can count (I'm a musician, duhh), and there are so many things this food-and-social-area has going for it. Let's see. (1) It's mostly indoor, but has a nice outdoor space in between. In the freezing temps around here, the shelter is much welcome. (2) You can park for free here whether you go to the Uni or not. Great for businesses and students alike. But you only get 60 mins. Officially. Not always enforced. (3) Their food places are way, way, way, way, way, way better than what you will find on most college campuses. Highlights include: Korean Express: some of the best and cheapest Korean food in town. Their banana shake drink (in a carton) is awesome as is their spicy-a.f. Yuk Gae Jang. Eat here. Thank me later. Berry berry bizzy for a reason. Dancing Chopsticks: the Congee is cheap and delicious and filling. Wide range of Japanese dishes plus cheap Bubble Teas. Excellent food. Kung Fu Tea: excellent Bubble Tea chain with some of the best Bubble Teas in WNY, and really lovely service, depending on who you get. Try Honey Oolong Tea with tapioca. Try Lemon Black Tea, Pineapple Black Tea, and so on. Rachel's: good Lebanese food, Kofte Kebab is a highlight, prices are way cheaper than the other Rachel's locations, but the food is better at the Williamsville location. Marco's: great sandwiches, but the Maple location has much better quality and options than all of the other Marco's. Bollywood Bistro: Indian buffet. Not bad at all. La Rosa: huge pizza slices. So in summary... UB is absolutely blessed for food and extremely lucky to have some of these options on campus. And for those willing to drive, there are so many other magnificent gems within 5 miles of this campus too, but within UB Commons alone, you could easily eat every day for a month, on a budget, never eat the same thing, and never have a bad meal. And UB Come-ons is what I get every time I sit and eat in the general seating area. Usually from men. Older men. Professors. With grey hair. And large bank balances. Exactly my type. Now please, Save The Clock Tower.
