The transmission American rebuilt completely failed at eleven months. No warranty because my Service Engine Soon light stays on. I changed the parts they requested and still no warranty. They didn't show me the scan results afterwards. Someone tell me, a former ASE certified transmission mechanic why a transmission completely locked up because of their claim of a bad EGR valve. A year of training for an ultra marathon shut down due to the expenses. Thanks a lot guys. My engine runs like it should. Warranty or not. Very honest and caring owners! No charge on diag. This was such a relief after being charged $150 by another shop that told me my issues were in the transmission and they could not fix it. My transmission end up needing to be rebuilt. I was charged half what other shops quoted me and given the best warranty of any other shop. Three years/100,000mi. My car drives like a dream and I am confident I can come to them anytime if I have issues. They also offered to service my transmission whenever I like for only the cost of fluid and a filter. I have a 81 Jeep with a basic Chevy 350 and 350 turbo transmission. They would not work on it since it was not stock.

I had my van towed to these guys to reman./rebuild my 4L80e trans. . The fella I talked to originally was cordial and helpful. Later, I got a call from the other guy... who's who, I don't know or care...that they wouldn't work on it until some "drivability issues" were taken care of. The guy who called was rude. The "issues" were that "his scanner wouldn't communicate with my OBD1" system. Okay... no problem there at the shop that ultimately fixed my van... there were NO codes, NO check engine light....NOTHING to read. Next... He told me that my van had a "weird shutter between 1100 and 2200 rpm"... well, that was not observed EVER by me, nor two other shops and THE TRANSMISSION WAS BROKEN and STUCK IN 2ND GEAR when American checked it out... maybe there is your "weird shutter" if there ever was one. Last, he told me that it had an ''excessively high idle" at 900 rpm. First of all that's not "excessive"... second.... it's an old van...it idles at 800-900 rpm on start up and then settles well under 700 rpm after a couple moments when it warms up... NORMAL. I had to waste a hundred bucks towing it to a good, small shop across town. Super honest people at Lem's Truck and Trans. NO BS, NO run around. Good work, honest guys. Perhaps these guys at American would have done a good job... but instead they just wasted my time and money. read more

Fantastic people, Fantastic work, Fantastic experience! Cheaper than most other shops and have the most professional staff. Dropped off car, called to inform me of my vehicle issues. They informed me that I had both engine and transmission problems. They said some of my engine problems could potentially cause transmission problems after the rebuild. They told me they would feel much more comfortable rebuilding my trans after the engine was running right. So, I took my car to my regular mechanic which verified their diagnosis. He fixed the engine and I took it back to them. They rechecked everything to make sure it still needed a trans rebuild. They even showed me the fluid, the information on the scanner, and explained everything about what was happening. Rebuilt in 4 days with a 3 year 100k mile warranty, and wouldn't let me pay anything until the job was done and they were happy with it. It was even cheaper than what they quoted and they fixed a bad motor mount for me. I don't think I could be happier! Thank you. The other reviews on here have to be lies! read more

Needed a transmission rebuild. NO engine problems, purred like a kitten before taking it to American Transmission. Vehicle towed in, transmission rebuilt. Went to pick the car up and was told the warranty would not be honored until engine repairs were completed. What engine repairs, it had no engine problems when we brought it to you! Apparently they put it on a computer AFTER doing the transmission work and found issues. Again NO engine problems prior to taking the car to them. Took the car in to a reputable mechanic. Timing chain shot, could hear the noise from it being damaged when the engine was running and needs to be replaced, $2800. Asked this mechanic and 3 others if taking out and putting in a transmission would cause the timing chain to be shot, told yes, if they were careless removing and putting the transmission back on it would move things enough to damage the timing chain. Got the repairs completed and were given the warranty on the transmission. Told them they were likely the ones who caused the engine issues as it had NO problems prior to them working on the transmission, looked wide eyed and said nothing. If you are taking a car to them for transmission repairs it's highly suggested you get your own mechanic to put it on a computer and check it for ANY problems, have this documented and then if they get the car back to you with issues....well you know who caused them. Very disappointed and very unlikely they will ever get my business again. Too bad I had to give them any stars... read more

They fixed my front axle and afterwards I had my ABS light, TCS off light, and slick road light on as soon as I picked it up. Unfortunately it was after hours when I picked it up. The speed sensor was damaged during the repair and they refused to accept the fact they damaged it. It is common for that to be damaged during repairs the wheel needs to be removed for. None of these lights were on before this fix. It is incredibly frustrating and disappointing they won't own up to it. They are never getting my business again, nor do I think a family run business who was recommended to me by MD Hickman's should treat their customers this way. I am a college student who did not need the extra 150+ expense for a sensor that was damaged. I hope this helps someone else who is looking for a honest business to take their car to because this IS NOT one of them. What a disgusting business practice. read more
