The people who work here are completely rude and disrespectful. This place does not operate like a normal thrift store and yet they act like you should know how everything works. Went to donate at the dock, after getting reprimanded for bringing a small box in the front to put in the *designated donation cart*. The guy at the dock turned me and my donations down, without even pretending looking at it. Guess he didn't want to do any work in the afternoon? I would've helped, even unloaded the SUV myself. One of my favorite thrifts in Pittsburgh. Friendly service and usually very good finds! I just love this thrift store and I recommend it. It is very no thrills or fancy but that where you find the gems IMO. Great service-- a nice break from Goodwill; which I am a fan of. Using an app I found for thrift-aholics thanks to my friend, Yvette, we came across American Thrift Center out in West Mifflin on one of our all day thrift excursions. This store is a little out of the way if you're not from this area, and you may feel you're getting a little lost since you end up driving in a more rural looking area until you get to the plaza where it's located. It has lots of parking in a private lot and trust me the outside is no indication of how big it is inside. This store has so much stuff packed into a fairly large space. The clothing selection and shoe selection is the real gem here. I love knick knacks as much as the next person, but eventually I'm going to need to pick up a new dress or jeans to cut into shorts. The place wasn't packed, which is a nice surprise for weekend day at a big thrift store. The clothes were organized well and the prices were low. There was one thing though that sort of bugged me... It's not that I LIKE the smell of thrifted clothes, but I feel like anyone who thrifts knows what smell I'm talking about. This place does not use whatever it is that makes the clothes smell like that. I imagine it's some sort of disinfectant spray. You would think it would be a good thing, but what it meant is that the cute summery dress I found smelled like cat pee and cigarette smoke. No thanks. My only complaints about American Thrift would be an outrageous $20 minimum for cards. Two women working one register together that we're the least friendly store employees I've encountered since 16 yr olds who hate their lives. No dressing rooms. I don't know what this theme is with thrift stores not having them, but I'm getting really good at changing pants in the middle of an isle without flashing my bits to everyone. Not enough to keep me from coming back, but as far as I'm concerned this is a cash only place from this point forward. read more

This evening myself, my wife and my daughter stopped by the American Thrift Center in West Mifflin at 1806 Homeville Rd to do some shopping. It was our first visit there and at first we found it to be a pleasant place. We looked them up online and found out that their store hours were 8:00am - 8:00pm Mon-Fri, which were the same hours on their door. We arrived about 6:45pm, at 7:31pm a older senior citizen female possibility the store manager announced over the stores PA system that the store would be closing shortly and to bring your items to the register; again the store hours online & on their front door says 8:00pm. At 7:37pm the woman announced again but with a very irritated and elevated tone of voice that the store is closing, bring your items to the register now! At this point my wife was walking up to the register were my wife and I both ask her about all the signs that say you close at 8:00pm? She answered in a irritated and rude fashion that "We close at 7:45pm, we have to be out of the building at 8:00pm! She finished by saying "We have things to do ourselves" I told her that the 3 of us work as well and we knew how business hours work, and then I suggested to her that if that is the case she might want to look into changing the business hours on the door and online to say 7:45pm instead of 8:00pm! I say all that to end with these words. Whether we ever shop there again hasn't been determined yet, I just want to let American Thrift Center management know who they have working for them. Myself, my wife and daughter all work with the public in sales and the medical fields and I know if we treated our customers and patients the way we were treated this evening we probably would have our jobs for long. Despite other reviews. This is a fantastic thrift store. Unlike the Goodwill or the Salvation Army, everything is half off except for a certain color tag or ND (no discount) items which are usually items that are name brand or higher quality. Those are the items that are pricey. However there are certain times when the ND items will be included in the half off sale. Their prices are fair, and even cheaper because they are usually half off the tagged price unless it is the color of the week. I've purchased brand-new items here for a few bucks. I bought two jackets for my daughter when she was younger; both new with tags and they totaled less than what one cost new. The only drawback, at least for me, is that you have to spend $20 or more to use a credit or debit card. As for the employees, they are nice but that may be because I've been shopping here for 15+ years. read more

They actually have a lot of nice clothes and the prices are really good. But as mentioned, there is a $20 minimum for cards. Also, the employees can be pretty rude. I was with my mother who decided to buy a lottery ticket, and the cashier (I think maybe the owner) started making all of these passive aggressive comments about how she thinks the lottery is a waste of money etc. Not only is it rude to express such opinions to a customer, but it's also hypocritical to have the machine in your store at all and profit from it if you're that opposed to it. I visit this store almost every day since I live close by and I walk around the shopping center for exercise. It is the best ever. They have a large selection of merchandise and the prices are very low. You can also get up to 50% off except for the current color of the day. The staff is very friendly and efficient. Have donated many, many items here and have bought a lot here (a grand total of a few 100's of dollars fair market value), but all that stops now. Bought a pricier purse here a few days ago. Am a non-smoker. After opening plastic grocery bag provided, w/ purse inside, a few days later (as I had been busy), I gagged. The inside of purse smelled of cigarette smoke. Tried to return purse today for store credit, as I was not asking for a cash refund. After explaining my situation, I was told emphatically by the manager that "All sales are final." I told her and another clerk to keep the purse. Walked out, will NOT return. read more

I do like this store for the clothes. The prices are good on them. One thing I don't like is the $20 minimum on cards. No one carries cash anymore, so I think that's high. The people who work there do not smile to customers. Ever. They are friendly amongst themselves and will point you in the right direction (literally, when I asked where something was, the lady looked at me, not smiling, and pointed), but they don't make you feel welcome. I wonder if they realize that we customers pay their paycheck. I do like the 1/2 price discounts, which they change daily, but it always seems like what I want is not on sale that day. LOL! There's no dressing room, but I've gotten pretty good at holding an article of clothing up to me in a mirror and guessing. The bad part about that is, if I'm wrong, I own it anyway because there are no returns or exchanges.
