When my husband was released from the hospital to home hospice, with an estimated 6 months to live,…read morethe hospital required we use an ambulance to transport him the less than one mile home. The hospital contacted Olympic Ambulance, who informed the hospital they would arrive at 2:00 pm on his release date. I left at 1:30 to go home to meet the hospice team, who was bringing a hospital bed, a wheelchair and other durable medical equipment. The plan was for me to ready the room and wait for his arrival, probably by 2:15 or so. At 3:30, my husband called me quite distressed because no one had come to pick him up and he was waiting in a darkened hospital room with no clue as to what was going on. I contacted the hospice team, who informed me they were at the mercy of the ambulance company and did not know when they could come. I called my husband and asked him to hang tight and to call me if they hadn't arrived by 4:00. He called me at 4:20, very distressed. I spoke with the floor nurse, who was very kind and did his best to calm my husband. The nurse said this was not unusual and that ambulance services in this area can be flaky and unreliable. He suggested I give it another half hour. I called my husband back at 5:00 and, of course, no ambulance. By now he was in tears, just wanting to be at home, feeling like he'd been abandoned by the ambulance company. Realizing I was dealing with a flaky and unreliable company, I took the new wheelchair and packed it in the car, drove back to the hospital and went up to his room. He was alone in the dark, just waiting and waiting. I told the nurse I wanted to forget the ambulance, and asked him to help get my husband in the wheelchair so I could transport him home. He did with some difficulty as we needed to navigate a colostomy bag, some possessions and hospital supplies and my husband's weakened body. As we were rolling him to the elevator, the ambulance people showed up. It was now 5:50, almost four hours after the time they said they'd be there. The ambulance drivers blamed traffic on the delay and said the company gives them no way to contact a hospital, a patient or their family. Once I calmed down, I agreed for them to transport my husband home. I was very surprised, then, to receive a huge bill from the ambulance company with zero acknowledgment of their ineptitude nor discount for arriving four hours late. I called the number on the bill and spoke to a very unfriendly and mildly antagonistic billing representative who told me this was their bill, there was absolutely nothing she could do about it and essentially, for me to just shut up and pay it. Extremely poor customer service, in my opinion, with no empathy for my husband's situation nor acknowledgement of the horrible service provided on the release date. It was only after I repeatedly stated that this was unacceptable billing practice that she took my number and said a dispatch manager would be in touch with me. Of course, I have not been contacted by the dispatch manager or anyone else at the company. All I can say is: stay far away from this company. Their service at a time of need was awful and their customer service after the sale is non-existent.
