I am so disappointed with my experience with American Pearl. I had seen a Tahitian pearl ring on Amazon from Pearl Source and really liked it but I felt a Tahitian Black Pearl needs to be set in white gold and had just sold out and only available in yellow gold. Then I found American Pearl on the internet and came across their Halo Black Tahitian pearl ring. I was afraid the price was too good to be true. I should have gone with my instinct. I had even called to ask if I could order a 9 mm pearl in this setting but was told the design would not accomodate a larger pearl. When the ring arrived, I was immediately disappointed. When I called I explained to the employee what happened and she took down my email address. I got an email asking if I would like to return the ring and included instructions on how to do so. I emailed them back explaining my disappointment in their lack of effort to find out what the issue was and not even offer an apology. Only in response to my email did I get an apology. Then an offer to swap out the pearl for a smaller size so that the design would appear more like AP's site. I have decided to return the ring and have ordered from Pearl Source since the ring is now available in white gold. I didn't go thru Amazon since I upgraded the pearl to PS's AAAA grade. I have to say, I fell in love with and really wanted the design AP advertised but could not deliver. Instead of the elegant swirl surrounding the pearl, the pearl is shoved into a small opening resulting in this tacky design. AP has a similar design as Pearl Source but after this debacle, I won't dare buy from AP again. This was intended for a very special birthday gift and I'm extremely disappointed. I had such a great experience with American Pearl! I received my double strand of natural blue akoyas today, and they are seriously the most beautiful pearls I have ever seen in person. I cried a little when I put them on! I have wanted some natural blues since I found out that they existed, and I had almost given up on my dream of owning a strand. I ordered one several years ago from a different pearl vendor, and ended up sending them back because they were too baroque and honestly looked like plastic. When I ran across the double strand on the American Pearl website, I was hesitant to even try again, but I am so glad I did! These are just next-level gorgeous! I put them on and both I and my husband said, "Wow." The customer service I received was really fantastic, too. The vendor was very responsive via email, answering all of my questions and helping me decide on what length I needed to get the look I saw in the video on the website. So I ordered a set of black pearls on a multi-strand bracelet. I think they called it "water fall". The craftsmanship was fine but I didn't care for the color. I wanted something more like "peacock" and the pearl were more like steal beads. I realize choosing pearls is rather subjective because of all of the determinants of a good pearl. I have been a customer of American Pearl for over 15 years and bought my first good pearl necklace from them to commemorate my 5th wedding anniversary (my then husband wasn't the gift giving kind). Over the years I added 12 inches to my necklace, bought three pairs of pearl earrings, and asked the family that runs American Pearl to repair a set of earrings that my mother gave me and that I loved wearing. They were in a sad state, as I wore them so often that the pearl came loose from one of the posts. Eddie fixed it for free, and didn't just fix it, but remade the earrings so that they are more beautiful and luxurious than before. Quick further update: they are trying very hard to get in touch with me and make things right - and kudos to them for that - but I at this point want nothing more to do with them. Jewelry is a luxury item. One shouldn't have to work for several months to get it right. It's a ring. Not a custom design. It should all have been done right to begin with. The ring fell apart. Not sure where the previous update went. After 2 months. Updating previous review. I would very much want to give them five stars, but, honestly, wouldn't feel right doing so because of my initial experience. Below is what I feel an objective evaluation. Pearl quality - 5 stars. I was very happy with the shape, color, lustre and cleanness of the pearl we ended up keeping (the ring). It's beautiful. Price (in comparison with other places, even on foot - I live by Diamond Way, so compared) - 5 stars (+++, considering the quality). More on this later. Customer service - this is where I pause. Terrible initially, but stellar once Mark stepped in later in the process. The 0 to 5 stars took about a month and a half. Which brings us back to price. I consider myself a pretty savvy shopper, so I feel I need to take some responsibility for the hiccup. The reason why their prices are so great is that they save on overhead (staff, showroom, etc.) It depends on your preference, but I prefer they save on that rather than compromise on pearl quality. Mark was very generous in his offer to compensate me for my trouble. For personal reasons I chose to decline his very kind offer, so I don't feel this updated review is not objective. But I did appreciate the length they were willing to go to make sure I'm happy. I guess what I want to say is - if you're in a pinch, perhaps you should go with a larger (and more expensive) vendor. If you prefer to pay less, go with American Pearl but expect delays, particularly around major holidays. Overall, I will gladly shop with them again, as I am very VERY happy with the quality. I will, however, shop well in advance to allow processing by a slimmer staff profile. They can easily remedy what ails them. But that means you will pay considerably more. I believe there is a void they fill - but I also feel expecting the same level of service as from a much higher-priced vendor was unreasonable. I was looking to buy a high-quality pearl necklace and earring set as a surprise gift for our wedding. I purchased the engagement ring and our wedding bands through a boutique jeweler referred to me by my brother, and I was a little uncertain about purchasing fine jewelry online. But I went ahead and made the call--and am so glad I did! This place is really hit-or-miss. I had ordered some simple pearl studs from them, which I picked up at their showroom in New York, and the earrings were totally perfect and exactly what I was looking for. I needed them urgently before a trip because I'd lost my other pair, and American Pearl provided ones that were larger than what I could afford at other retailers. So I thought I had found a great jewelry place. Unfortunately, they didn't turn out to be so great when I tried to purchase earrings from them for my wedding. Since I'd had a good experience previously, I figured I would order some drop-pearl earrings from them as my wedding jewelry. I found a pair that I liked online, but when they arrived the pearls weren't drop-shaped-- they were just oval-shaped. I wanted drop-shaped pearls for a vintage style, so I called them about it. They said I could exchange the earrings for another pair that would be the style I wanted. I exchanged them, but the new earrings they sent me were very poor quality. The pearls themselves looked nice, but the fixtures and other stones looked very cheap. I was shocked because I had spent a LOT of money on these for my wedding! At this point the wedding was only a few weeks away, so I emailed them and desperately asked to return the earrings since I didn't have time to evaluate other options from them. They were difficult about it at first but eventually allowed me to return them. I then went to Mikimoto and bought some high-quality pearl earrings that I could evaluate for myself in person. I think the photos on the American Pearl website make the items look nicer than they actually are, because what I received was not good quality and was not even close to being worth what I had paid for it. I bought a pair of pearl earring studs surrounded by diamonds to be delivered on July 2 so my hubby could give them to me while we were out of town for my birthday on July 3. I opened the beautifully packaged box and saw what looked like extremely well made earrings with what I considered to be low quality diamonds encasing a stunning set of pearls. I was so sad. In addition to the diamonds being of what I consider to be low quality the appraisal that was included with my earrings was for a pearl ring. I Immediately emailed that I wanted an RMA to return the earrings, which was given to me right away. While I was getting them all boxed up for return I received an email from the owner offering to upgrade the diamonds for free which was an appropriate offer but I declined. American Pearl did an amazing job helping me with my holiday shopping. I wanted a set of black pearls for my wife and placed an order for the tin cup necklace and studs. Now I am no pearl expert, but when I got the pearls I was really impressed. The pearls were obviously very high quality with some brilliant luster. What was even better was how the blackness of the pearl was consistent across the necklace and even between the necklace and earrings. Not only was the product really good, but the customer service was some of the strongest I have experienced in online jewelry shopping. This updated review is based on my return experience: Kyle, was very helpful in getting my issue resolved. After my initial review, I was eventually contacted regarding my return, and offered percentage off, etc for the trouble. I chose to not accept any offers as I was not sure about using their services again. I was allowed to return the items directly to the showroom. The transaction was fast and friendly. Kyle explained that they were extremely busy during the holidays hence the extremely delayed reply. Also, during the busy season they hire a call center service to take their calls. I still think that their call center is very ineffective and actually a waste of business. However, the staff was pretty cool. Update: We are currently buying another strand of pearls from A P. The first strand we ordered we decided to return for a second strand. The pearls from the first strand were the exact size and the exact strand as advertised online. The color was a little different than the picture, but that is how it is when you order pearls from the internet. I am very happy to say that the quality of A P pearls is better than that of most of their competitors -- an AAA rating (highest rating) from A P is better than any other AAA rating (yes I've ordered pearls from the competitors and sent them back). The only thing I'm not sure of is how the AAA rating from A P stacks up to the competitor that has the AAAA rating system.....that's to say I do not know if the competitors AAAA rating is as good of quality as the AAA from A P. The second strand we received was a golden south sea strand, advertised as 12mm to 14.7mm -- we received the exact strand pictured on the website and according to our home calipers the pearls were 12mm to 14.9mm -- no complaints there. Again, the color was a little different, but much more true to color than the Tahitians (it seems like the overtones in the Tahitians throw off the internet pictures....that is true of all the Tahitian strands I've ever purchased online). If you are looking for a great strand of Tahitians that are truly clean and have an excellent luster, this is the merchant for you....again, if you are super picky about colors, call and speak to Eddie or Barrett (sp?) and they won't steer you wrong. read more

I am in a current disagreement with AP! I ordered a Xmas gift for my spouse, clip on pink pearl earrings. I bought a necklace, a bracelet, and a single large pearl in the past from AP. All was good, now I give my spouse the earrings on December 19th and they are for pierced ears! The quality was low too! I returned them...they are telling me the thirty days has passed and I can't get a refund! Totally unacceptable! american pearl is vastly overpriced and does not deliver quality. all one has to do is know an honest jeweler on west 47th street in nyc. my jeweler sources all of her pearls - which are mikimoto AAAA quality from the same source of mikimoto. all pearls are sold at auction and unless one enjoys throwing money away they should not go to mikimoto or tiffany. i have the most beautiful pearl necklace (the clasp was separate as that was my decision) for i paid a fraction of american pearl's. another example is the last i know of they were selling gabrielle sanchez earrings at least 200% more than gabrielle herself. this is not honest or perhaps merely a case of caveat emptor. any pearl items i have purchased from american pearl have been disappointing. finally, do not let anyone tell you pearls are an investment. they are not. they are simply to be worn and enjoyed and, again, why overpay for lesser quality. read more

I ordered a pair of Tahitian South Sea pearl earrings, that came with a GIA AAA certificate. One of the pearls has a scratch in it. It looks like it was scratched by a tool while it was being made, and I can feel the indentations in the pearl with my finger. I'm in the process of exchanging it. It's just a hassle that I had to spend $2 to print the air bill at Fed Ex plus another $3 for a packaging envelope. I do appreciate how care was taken to match the bracelet to the earrings. They restring bracelets for free. They allowed me to return a fish hook clasp as credit towards upgrading to an X clasp. read more

I recently ordered sapphire south sea pearl earrings to match a mikimoto necklace that I purchased in the ocean elements collection as I could not find the mikimoto ones at a reasonable price. I was disappointed in the size of the pearl and don't think it was right. It was supposed to be 8mm as the Mikimoto necklace and when I compared the pearls well I don't believe the white south sea pearl is 8mm at all is is smaller for sure. I would have purchased a larger size, but did not think the size would be misrepresented. I was also supposed to get mom20 discount, but not sure if they applied it even after they said they would as I did not get an invoice with the item nor a corrected email to show this. I recently (within the last 60 days) had the pleasure of doing business twice with American Pearl (Eddie specifically). On two separate occasions we worked with Eddie for a strand of South Sea Pearl's. Any Jewelry we buy is with the intention of it being a multi-generational piece to be passed down from my significant other to our children and later their children. As a result, when we buy jewelry we buy the best we can (quality first) and have very high expectations. We initially requested a Rose' overtone 9-12 mm high luster 16" strand and then later additionally requested a Silver overtone 12 mm-15 mm high luster 18" strand. I have invested considerable time into researching pearls for the past 12+ months. Our goal was to buy the best strand (quality) possible at any price. I researched several online pearl companies that are usually referred to in online forums. We also compared strands from well know companies such as Belpearl and Assael additionally in local stores. When the time came to make the purchase I called Pearl Paradise, The Pearl Source, Pearls of Joy, Pure Pearl and American Pearl. I told each exactly what I was looking for. Only American Pearl could meet the quality range and the specifics I was looking for. In fact, although I was promised pictures and specifics from 3 of the above-mentioned companies I only received pictures and an actual call back from American Pearl. American Pearl (Eddie) responded the same day I called - both times. I never heard back from the other online stores at all. Eddie could meet our requests for both strands each time within a few business days (shipped to my door). We also had strands brought in locally from Belpearl and Assael (local Mikimoto dealer had strands already on hand to compare). My significant other and I personally shopped every high-end jewelry store within 50 miles of downtown Austin TX for weeks (lots of hours invested) to compare the quality of the strands side by side in person. The strands from American Pearl beat the high-end jeweler's strands they had available in store to compare. We tried 6 local high-end jewelers and anything that was even close was double the cost. We looked at strands in person that were as high as $44k. We specifically sought out high end jewelers as regular jewelers do not typically carry South Sea pearls. We wanted round, AAA luster and clean strands. The Rose' necklace from American Pearl was higher luster and quality than a Silver overtone from a brand name pearl company (listed above) that was priced more than twice what we paid from American Pearl! I use this as a reference point as the Silver overtone necklace we received from American Pearl was an even higher luster than the Rose' one! That speaks volumes to me about the value from American Pearl as Rose' is considerably more valuable in general due to their rarity (more costly also). The Rose' and Silver strands from American Pearl were cleaner than any strands we could get from a local jeweler out of a case. From a value perspective - a $14 thousand-dollar Rose's necklace from American Pearl was not matched in quality by anything under $23k. A $25 thousand-dollar Silver overtone necklace was not matched by anything that we could get from a case at the local jewelers even up to $44k. I will do business with this company again in the future. Eddie bent over backwards to meet all our requests and I have not had such a great buying / service experience from another company in a long time. I rarely take the time to write reviews as I only do so when the experience was either particularly exceptional or poor. In this case it was exceptionally excellent all the way around! read more

And also below I've pasted their minimal response, not even signed by "whomever"wrote this back to me this morning. No outreach phone call to me to attempt to make it right or clear up the issue or personally explain or offer to rush ship me my order, or offer any other alternative such as further discount for my problem or tell me they value me as a loyal customer or anything at all. Very cold, and unthoughtful, and it actually really hurt my feelings after being a customer for years with them and placing my trust and hard earned money with them. Uh, NO I do not want an "Upgrade" to AA quality! Are you kidding me?? Hanadama Pearls are supposed to be the finest quality AAA!!! First of all, HANADAMA quality pearls are expected to be of the finest grade of Akoya pearl quality in the entire world. I was shocked that I am now being told that your Hanadama pearls were only "A" quality which means visible flaws and of the poorest grade. I cannot imagine that your company would expect customers to be uneducated about pearls or pay for expensive pearl jewelry that is of shoddy "A" quality, which you can get on QVC or HSN for around $100 or $200 dollars!!! But when customers are expected to pay in the neighborhood of $2000 (I used the 15% cyber discount at the time I placed my order) and then later told they can "upgrade" to AA quality, this makes no sense whatsoever. Your website tells customers that the Pearls are Hanadama Quality. Here is a copy and paste of the email that you sent me, telling me that the Pearls I ordered and payed for are out of stock, and about the "free upgrade to AA quality" What in the world is going on here? I believe I have lost trust in you and would never purchase Hanadama pearls from a company unless I firmly believed these are of the finest quality for mm size and represented as beautiful as your pictures portray on the site (and your photos certainly do not show poor quality pearls) I question the legitimacy of your company at this point... Please think twice if you want to order from this store. I ordered a pearl ring for my wife around end of April. The first ring I picked was not in-stock so I moved on to the second choice. On the web site, it indicated the ring was in-stock so I ordered it. A few day later, I got an e-mail apologized for the incorrect information on the web site and the ring was not available and on the back-order. Since my wife likes the style of the ring, we decided to wait. It took about 2 weeks. I thought OK, I could wait. When the ring arrived, we found that the ring was not as nice as shown in the photo. The pearl was not sit correctly on the setting and overall the ring looks dull. We decided to return the ring so we called to get the RMA. The customer service was the worst that we have ever talked to. Rude and abrasive. We was so upset.
