This school is very family oriented and maintains an educational yet fun environment. The pricing here is very fair for the classes as well as their branded merchandise. The class schedule is also very easy to follow. The daily class schedule for each level of students is different for every day of the week. However, this schedule is the same every week. Once you input the dates into your calendar you can put them on repeat and you'll never miss a beat. The belt testing here is also done well in my opinion. The testing dates are announced well in advance and I've also seen them posted throughout the Dojo. As long as the students attend, participate and learn the different blocks, punches, etc then they should pass their tests each time. My son has moved up to the next belt each time he has a belt test. The new location is really cool too! They now have two floors which allows them to accommodate more classes as well. I really am glad that my son attends Okinawan Karate Dojo! I'm lookong forward to him earning his black belt here one day.

Seriously, this is the real deal - this school is probably the closest opportunity outside Okinawa you'll get to learning authentic traditional karate from a master practitioner as it was originally conceived by Kanbun Uechi back at the beginning of the 20th century. This style of karate is practical for both self defense and physical fitness, and promotes self-discipline and a healthy life style. Progressing through the various ranks is well structured and meaningful, and you absolutely get a sense of accomplishment as you do so. The staff at Okinawa Karate and Cultural Center make learning karate easy and fun, for all ages and abilities, with hands on classes at the Okinawa Karate and Cultural Center and at various Parktakes rec centers throughout Fairfax County. My whole family signed up for karate classes during the pandemic on a whim, but it only took just a few short classes to realize what a gem of an opportunity we have right here in northern Virginia. The Cultural Center has many artifacts in a museum style in a side room. There's also many people from the community like the DC Okinawan Kai who utilizes the space. It is a safe and welcoming space for not just Okinawan people, but those interested in learning more about the culture and tradition. This spacious dojo has two kicking/punching bags ready for training, many talented instructors, and classes for children and adult alike! I am excited for what's to come for this OKCC! Awesome place!! My climbing buddy and I came to the Boulder Yard after all of our friends kept…read moresaying "Just go!!!" So we made a day trip of it. First, Steve, the owner, is great. He chatted with us for a really long time, asking about what we were interested in, why we popped in, and on and on. He also told us his own history and the Boulder Yard's history. He gave us a few specific suggestions and ideas, including that his sets are a bit different than most (they are) and, more important, his floor cushioning is very different than most other gyms. It is. It is much MUCH softer than most which is good but he suggested taking a few falls before we went too high just to get used to the feel. It's also like walking on the beach --- walking from one side of the room to the other will wear out your legs. His walls are not textured (mostly) so if you're planning to smear a lot --- well, you won't. But it is more realistic this way. The majority of the place is boulders but he's also got two workout areas with equipment, two separate rooms that he uses to teach some martial arts (didn't catch what kind), and, for the helluvit, a Nintendo/Playstation/whatever setup for, I guess, if you're tired and just want to zone a bit. We'll absolutely be back. We paid $54 for two day passes; quite reasonable I think. Oh, and he does his own woodworking (as do my partner and I). Took a pic of the large benches in the front of his shop. Hand-made from some trees that he grabbed from his own yard. That was cool!!!

I've taken both…read moreTae Kwon do and Shotokan Karate before in other places, so I know what to look for in a martial arts dojang / dojo. Sensei Nguyen teaches a very traditional form of Shotokan Karate using the prescribed kata taught by Gichin Funakoshi and his closest followers. He emphasizes not just the traditional instruction given to all karateka, but he also includes free form kumite ('jiyu kumite') for colored belts, and ground techniques! The ground techniques are an extra bonus that you won't find being given frequently in other karate dojos anywhere else. The atmosphere is pleasant, but intense with an emphasis on physical fitness and fundamental techniques. I'm very happy to have had the opportunity to be instructed by Sensei Nguyen. Instruction is open to all children, youth, adults and elderly. The instruction given by Sensei Nguyen at the dojo is an excellent value for the money. You won't be disappointed.

I was able to see how all 3 were- i thought they did well with young kids. My reason for 3 stars is for the temporary management ! I cancelled in mid May.. but got fully charged in June. I went in to see what happened... well the old owner skipped town along with making fraudulent charges from over 200 old customers!! Also, the poor employees that worked under her... checks bounced! I had to just cancel my debit card so i wouldn't be charged again. Good luck to the new owner!

HANDS DOWN thee best place we've found in Loudoun County! We've tried a couple different places…read morewith our kids and have met with others in and around Ashburn/Leesburgh. Hidy Ochiai Karate stood out above them all! Their classes go beyond the regular karate classes that other martial arts places provide. Here, they also do Kobudo which we learned is the use of ancient weapons! Trust me, your kids will go bonkers for this class!! It's taught in an extremely safe way, but still makes the kids feel like ninja superstars! I kind of want to take it myself :D Our daughter also did the summer camp this past summer and she loved it! She came home with real calligraphy paintings! Another thing that pushes them to the top is that they have Master Hidy Ochiai himself who comes down from New York to do special teachings with the kids each month. Look him up on YouTube and watch him slice an apple on someone's neck .... wait for it .... blindfolded! His skills are incredible and he is incredible with the kids as well. This school is in no competition with any other Martial Arts place because it's THAT good! I want to write a novel on here, lol, but I won't. Just one last thing to note: Sensei Winkler himself is AHmazing with the kids too. The way he talks and interacts with the kids makes them listen and have fun. I've sat and watched him a number of times when my daughter is in class. He's structured and fun, which is exactly what my daughter needs! Sensei Winkler is an incredible teacher because he has a lifetime of experience and many trophies from national Championship tournaments! You have to at the very least come to their free class on Saturdays!
