This place can average at best, but it can also be really bad. I have had instructors No-show me on lessons. Aircraft not available for scheduled lessons, my checkride of all things was almost cancelled because they "forgot" to schedule me for it. 3 lessons in one week were never scheduled and no one had any idea why. I will use them to finish the PPL I started but that's it, Super expensive. I am done after the check ride. read more

So I visited a few flight schools today and by far this one was the most open and easily approachable. What impressed me was that did not itemize or "nickle and dime" as much as the others. In am by no means saying that they are any less expensive when they quote you an average cost but they do have a few things that make the training more affordable. The highlight of my visit was a preview of their 2 simulators in which students may use gratis when they are enrolled. This is a huge deal since many schools will charge an hourly rate for the privilege. The only time they charge for sim training here is if it's instructor guided. That's a very fair deal in my opinion. Their aircraft use was more expensive BUT they have planes with analog instruments AND glass cockpit and ALL their planes go for the same price. Also, all of their planes are fuel injected which means no fussing with carb heat. Many other schools seem to charge more for upgraded technology. Ground school was not as pricey and the school does not push a package or kit for you to buy. No high pressure sales there. Kudos goes out to John there for alleviating some of my initial anxiety by letting me walk out to a plane and hop in for initial feel and showing me around. The other places I visited today all seemed either a bit harried or sticklers on a scheduled appointment for a more controlled visit. I'm happy that they are busy but I really needed something a bit more personal here and John did a great job. Though I still have a bit of anxiety I think I can now go forward and actually schedule a discovery flight. Oh and speaking of which, THIS school actually includes a simulator experience in addition to the flight. No one else I've previewed offers that either. Instruction wasn't bad, however had to fly 30 minutes north out of the bravo airspace to the 'training area'. Location is horrible. When you're paying hundreds of dollars an hour for instruction and a plane... and you have to transit to the training area and pay for that..... no thank you read more

American Flyers is not recommended school to obtain your ratings. They will promise you CFI for very low cost and then fail you on a check ride to sell you more $250 flying hours. They also will try to manipulate you, will tell you a story that initial pass rate for CFI is 18% or so, which is absolutely not true. Then they will tell you a story that in "aviation community" everybody knows everyone, so you don't talk about what happened with other pilots, because you afraid! They will make you afraid of flying. They have set of "questions" on a check ride that they will ask you, those questions I guarantee you will not have an answer, because their "instructors" don't have the answers themselves! Worst experience ever. They have also another "school" in Florida, beware of that too. A guy who worked in Los Angeles now works over there. read more

The manager was polite and helpful until he got me signed up. They promised to provide me with an estimate of costs associated with getting my instrument ticket, but the estimate never came - just billed out flight to flight at very high rates. My instructor repeatedly misinformed me on procedures, which I'd then have to look up for myself - numerous hours wasted at a ridiculous cost. Moved on to a more experienced team at another flight school to finish up at a much more reasonable cost. read more

Drove up from Northern VA to visit this particular American Flyers location in order to learn a bit more about what they had to offer. As soon as I walked through the front door, I was greeted by the customer service representative, a flight instructor, and the director himself. The amount of hospitality they provide to their customers truly is outstanding. We had arrived just in time to take a small look at the school and partake in the monthly BBQ they hold. After sharing some stories with fellow pilots and eating some delicious hamburgers, we gathered for a small, complimentary seminar from one of the instructors. I know some pilots typically don't enjoy stuff like lectures and seminars but honestly, whatever makes me a better pilot, sign me up! once the seminar was over, I met with a flight instructor (Tom) who i had a discovery flight with. He was extremely professional and personable. Any question I asked him he was able to answer with details. After a quick pre-flight briefing, we were ready to go. This was my first time in a Cessna 172 RG and prior to that, I had no time in a complex aircraft so naturally, i was a bit confused with the contant speed prop and retractable gear. Tom did a great job introducing the systems to me and explaining how they operated and worked. After a great flight down the hudson corridor, we flew back to MMU, tied down, and called it a day. I absolutely enjoyed my visit to the school and the instructors are top notch. This branch of American Flyers is extremely well maintained with the cooperation of its employees as well as the management I witnessed from Eric, the Director. Great people to deal with and they truly understand how business should be done. An overall great asset to the aviation community and strong contributors to safe methods of flight training! The amount they charge for flight training is EXCESSIVE, specially since the flight instructors are not experienced, they use out of state folks that recently finished up their program with no experience and bring them in on their "intern program". (you're the guinea pig). I would not recommend this place as there is no director on site. Also, if you need complex aircraft for your training, good luck with that! They only have 1 on site and it breaks often because it is a very old airplane. read more
