Went with a few friends tonight for the first time. Flatbread definitely lived up to the hype. Started out with their homemade lemonade, which is sweated with freakin' maple syrup. Delicious. A friend I was with got root beer which I tried and was great as well (and I'm not a big root beer drinker). They bake their pizzas in two massive wood fire ovens. Their tomato sauce is made in a giant cauldron, also over a fire. Everything is fresh and organic (AND comes from local farms, which are proudly displayed on a list near the entrance). You can taste the difference. We ordered a pizza with chicken and BBQ sauce, one with sausage (homemade) and mushroom, and one with olives, goat cheese, onions, and red peppers. They were all fantastic. The crust is light and fluffy. The sauce is crazy good. Definitely some of the best pizza I've had. We somehow had room for dessert. They were out of their chocolate chip banana bread, which is supposed to be incredible, so we split their brownie and gingerbread desserts, both served with ice cream. Now, usually at a pizza joint, dessert is an afterthought. Not at Flatbread. The homemade brownie was warmed in the wood fire oven and came with ice cream (chocolate and vanilla. Yum), homemade chocolate sauce (there aren't words to describe how good it was), AND homemade whipped cream. Yes, it was all homemade except for the ice cream. The gingerbread was good but the brownie was my favorite. Flatbread is attached to a bowling alley, which has cheap prices. And a bar. I'll definitely be back to grab some pizza and play a few games. Sat at the table for 15 minutes before anyone even noticed us. A bit disappointing as this is one of my favorite spots in Davis. Staff made up for it by coming most of the meal. That being said. Outstanding food! Local produce, meats & beers! Great healthy options. Deff a great spot to bring large groups. Brought the family here to try the pizza boy they were happy. The service was excellent and recommended the veggi pizza which we are glad he did. The pizza is chewy yet soft and very yummy. We got a large cheese, large half veggi and half sausage and a small pork pie. All the toppings are very fresh and the pizza sauce is yummy. You can tell the pizza makers have thought about each bite and made the pizza so that each one is amazing. The pork pie was sweet and savory with the bbq sauce red onions and pineapple. A hidden gem! Was craving pizza late last night and decided to try this place. The pizza is legit. Tried their simple cheese pizza which I believe is called the medicine wheel. The pizza tasted fresh and not too salty. I believe they also use organic ingredients. Friendly staff as well. This has definitely become my new go to pizza place. The absolute best. This is our favorite go to place in Providence. It's casual and reasonably priced yet the food is always fresh, seasonal and organic, local and full of flavor. I actually feel good after eating their pizza instead of greasy and slobby like I do from other pizza.. We always start with their house salad which is simple yet loaded with delicious, in season veggies. I've tried their special pizzas with pineapple (which I typically find grotesque on pizza) and barbecue pork flavors, classic cheese and everything in between. Always delicious and great staff!! If you like thin, crispy pizza, then Flatbread Company is for you! I've tried pretty much all their pizzas (school event, they ordered a bunch of stuff) and they were all yummy, no complaints. Most recently, I tried the Somerville Community Flatbread. The flatbread had a tomato base with caramelized onions, mushrooms, and we added sausage. The crust/bottom was super crispy and thin. The sauce was sweet and tomato-y. I wanted to keep eating it just to taste the sauce! I thought the sausage was a little dry, but my partner liked it. I admire that their ingredients are locally sourced. The first time I tried candy cane beets was here! They also have a ton of veggie options for my vegetarian friends :) The bowling alley is a plus. The only place I know with candle pin bowling. If you are not good, you can ask them to put the rails up for you. You can only play at each lane for 2 hours per group. Parking can be tricky. There is street parking and also some lots in Davis, but those do fill up. read more

I rarely write reviews these days but had to give a big shout-out to the team at Flatbread. The food is always great, but what wowed me this time was the service. First of all, they had my pickup order ready right on time and found it right away. Then they made a point of carefully double-checking what I meant to order--it turns out I had accidentally ordered one pizza with no cheese... totally my fault. (And I never would have noticed otherwise until I got home.) They resolved the issue with tremendous grace and speed; I got a new cheese pizza home before the other one even got cold. At a time when managing takeout orders can be particularly challenging (we experienced tremendous delays at another Davis Sq restaurant a few weeks ago), this was truly exceptional. We are very grateful and won't miss an opportunity to come again! read more

We came here as a party of 5 with one pregnant celiac and EVERYONE was so pleased! For a pizza place, I was incredibly impressed with their gluten free accommodations! The manager came by completely on their own to confirm that all the necessary precautions would be made to ensure there would be no cross contamination. Amazing pizza. Old-school bowling. Open, but cozy, atmosphere. Open-fire pizza hearth. Located in Davis Square, but there's a parking lot nearby. This is kind of the perfect place. The pizzas are really, really, really good, with a plethora of vegetarian options and even a worthy vegan option (it's cheeseless-- none of that nasty Daiya, here!). You can go from experimental (we had the veggie special, whose olives, mushrooms, and a Balsamic glaze cohabited nicely with a selection of melty cheeses and that glorious chewy, flaky crust) to regular cheese 'za for the kids or the picky. If you want a lane, come early or reserve ahead of time. It's candlepin bowling, where the balls are smaller and easier for the kiddos and drunkos (Flatbread has an excellent beer list) to roll. Yes, that's right: Flatbread is a genuinely family-friendly establishment, where children and drunkles can pursue sport, and pizza, side by side. You do have to score your own bowling on paper, which is more challenging than it seems like it should be. The alternative is to not keep track of scores and pelt balls at the pins willy-nilly, which also sounds kinda fun. read more

And for $45 for 2 "large" and a small - definitely not worth the hefty price tag on it. On another note, what's up with not having the prices listed on the menu online? My husband and I were thrilled to learn about this new Flatbread location, since we have been big fans of the North Conway, NH location. We finally made it there for lunch this past Saturday. It was a bit overwhelming with the kids' birthday parties and soccer teams taking over the joint, but still it was an awesome lunch. They have a very impressive draught beer selection at very affordable prices ($4.50 for a pint of some of the best local craft brews)! The pizza, of course, was amazing as always. I think the dough is a bit doughier at this location, but I won't complain. The magic that comes from their local ingredients, giant stone oven, and the love they put into their food just comes through. I hope they stay here a long time! Candle pin bowling and pizza? Um... yeah. The first time I was here it was for an event which was fabulous in every way, but I wanted to go back and get the full-on Flatbread experience. I'm so glad I did. The space is quirky and cool in a very unique way -half of it's a bowling alley, the other a gourmet-ish pizza joint. Let me just tell you: the Mexican pie? Not to be missed. Crema, beans, fresh tomato and a bit of spice... heavenly. They, you go over and bowl a bit. I love the lanes - they're wicked old-school and totally fun. Pizza is like sex; when it's good, it is reaaaally good and when it's bad it is still pretty good! That being said Flatbread never fails to satisfy this customer! The first time I had their pizza was up at the Amesbury location and since then I've seized every opportunity I can to hop back into bed with them. They just have a way with ingredients and cheese that I have never known before. There is literally no wrong choice off of their menu. I'm a girl who loves her protein but often I find myself opting for the vegetarian special over the tried and true carne. A large is a great serving for two (with a few leftover pieces) but if you're looking more a menage-a-tois deal a large with a small will definitely suffice. If at all possible to save room for dessert their gingerbread (it might be seasonal) with maple ice cream and chocolate sauce.. woof that'll leave a girl begging for more! They also serve a seasonal apple sidecar that is incredible. Sidecars are my favorite drink and typically I don't like flavored variations (tend to be too sweet) but theirs is a winner. Other than that they have a vodka drink with jalapenos that they can do with tequila instead - live a little and get it! "Hey, wanna go bowling?" "WHAT??" "I SAID, 'WANNA GO BOWLING?!'" "WHAAAAT??" "BOWLING!!!!!!" Etc. This place is loud. And not in a kicky early 90's jams kinda way. Ear-splittingly loud. Industrial acoustics, screechy table full of Tufts students, bowling balls slamming into pins, subsequent cheering loud. Sure, all bowling places are loud. But you don't usually dine sit down a mere 20 feet from the lanes. "DINING ON WHAT??!" You scream. Well, on pretty delicious, if underdressed flatbread pizzas. No one doesn't like pizza, and the toppings are interesting and full of local flavor and flair. My compatriots were a little underwhelmed by the amount of topping in proportion to the cost and the wait, but it still hit the spot as pizza is wont to do. The menus are decorated with delightful little kids drawings, and the salads--also pricey--come with options for all sorts of added organic and seasonal cheeses and nuts. The pleasant staff is comprised entirely of be-trucker-hatted hipsters who wear bowling shoes unironically. Also, microbrews! "OKAY, HOW'S THE BOWLING??!!" To be fair, we went on a Friday night. We put our names in at 7:30pm and finally got a lane at 9:40. Call me a child of Lanes n' Games if you must, but it's really hard to bowl when there's nothing electronically keeping track of the number of pins that fell. Even if it's Commodore 64 stylz. We played one string and went home to rest our eardrums. "HMM. SOUNDS KINDA SUBPAR." "WHAT?!" "SUBPAR!!!" Well, perhaps, but that doesn't mean I won't go back. I really wanted to love this place. I did love Flatbread's North Conway restauant and have been eagerly anticipating my first visit since I first noticed the renovations. So, when I walked by yesterday and saw a little sign announcing that they would open to the public July 3rd, I was excited. First off: the place is brimming with potential. They've done a great rehab job with the space, using benches and other materials from the old Bowl Haven and have nicely renovated the bowling space they kept. Flatbread definitely seems like a company with its heart in the right place. They work hard to benefit both the community and the broader environment. The menu is full of locally sourced and organic items. The fact that they re-used materials from the old space tells me that they have a real dedication to minimizing their environmental impact. All the more reason to want to love the place. Service was chaotic. Our initial server took drink orders, promised to bring water and went to check on availability of the wine my wife ordered. 20 minutes later, there was still no sign of him. We had nothing to eat or drink. One waitress zipped by to say she'd be right back.. Eventually she returned. It was close to half an hour since the waiter had disappeared. I ordered a beer and my wife mentioned the delays and pointed out the wine she had wanted. The waitress didn't take too long to come back with wine, beer and water, but (as we found out it when we got the bill) a more expensive wine was substituted without our knowledge. The wine itself offered no hint that it was anything but the cheapest thing on the menu. While things happen, especially on the first day open to the public, both servers missed a chance to own up. The guy never came back or said a word to us. No apology for disappearing and leaving us with an empty table for a long stretch. The waitress was pretty good - apologizing a bit for the chaos, acknowledging her error on the wine. She even offered to talk to the manager to see if anything could be done about the wine substitution. She seemed stressed and put upon, but really there should have been no hesitation on her part about making this right. Also, there should have been no doubt on her part that she could make this right without having to go ask permission from a manager. At this point we were ready to go rather than wait for negotiations with the manager - especially given that no one had been returning when they said they would. The Pizza - "the Somerville Community" sounded great - but the execution was mediocre. At 17.50 it should have risen above the mushroom and onion pizzas we've had at other places - it didn't. It was a definite disapointment. There was a hint of carmelized onions, but the overall effect was pretty run of the mill. If there was anything special about the tomato sauce, it was well concealed/ Salad was pretty good - but the only dressing available was a berry dressing. My wife, who is turned off by the idea of fruity salad dressing asked if there were any other options - there weren't. I've never encountered a restaurant with only one choice for salad dressing. I actually liked the berry dressing - but there are people who are turned off by any hint of fruity salad dressing. It would definitely be wise to have vinegar and oil or anything else as an option. The bowling and the crowd of curious diners made for a lot of noise and energy, which was fun - but the chaos was less pleasant when we waited and waited with an empty table. If I thought this was the best we would ever see from Flatbread Pizza, I would never be back. I think I'll wait 6 -12 months and update my review with a second visit if the place is still there. My guess is there are people at the company who know what they are doing and they will work out the kinks - but until they do, I fear it would be a waste of time and money. If someone from Flatbread is checking on early reviews, please 1) offer other salad dressings, 2) empower your wait staff and emphasize the need for some accountability to customers, 3) fine tune that Somerville Community Pizza (or drop the price).. read more

First timer! I never been to Flatbread before. We were a small group of friends who wanted to go out for a birthday occasion. You know when you are exciting and happy to go out and all of a sudden you meet a crappy personality that ruins your night! This is exactly my experience with this place. It's all started at the check in. We saw a beautiful lady who took our names and was very helpful. We came very early because we know it's Friday night and we are going to wait for a while. So, we were told 1 hour. That was at 7pm. So, we hanged out till 7:45pm and we went back to the front desk to check back in and see how it's going. We meet that rude guy who doesn't smile, nor does he care. He told us "No No No we told you 1.5 hours" no you didn't. He was very rude. We wanted to leave right away but we didn't want to ruin our friends surprised birthday. So, we suck it in but I promised myself and everyone that it was my first and last time in this place. It's a good place and there are tones of nice people working there, but that guys simply ruined our night. An arrogant rude employee should not be upfront greeting customers. I also ordered caramelized onions, and there were very few onions. I've been here twice - once I ate at the bar and last night we ate at a table. It's a little on the small side, and it definitely can get crowded on a weekend night. We called ahead to put ourselves on "the list" but still had to wait. They told us 45 minutes but we probably waited for about 25-30 before being called. There's a good selection at the bar - you can get a beer, some wine, or a nice cocktail - whatever you prefer. The beer was reasonably priced, which is always a plus. The pizza is fantastic, and I love that they use local and organic ingredients. There was also a gluten free option for my friend, which is always a bonus. I've tried at least four of the pizza varieties and I have not been disappointed with any of them. Not only was the food great, but our waitress was amazing. She didn't rush us out or get impatient that we sat at the table for a long time. It's probably because she told us that we were hilarious and awesome. read more

It had been a few years since I'd last visited a Flatbread location, and I'd so enjoyed my last meal that I eagerly anticipated a visit to their Davis Square location. Oddly enough, the restaurant is co-located with a bowling alley, which detracts considerably from the experience simply due to the often-overwhelming noise level. This becomes a particularly acute problem during interactions with the staff. Dropping in on a Sunday afternoon, I was pleasantly surprised that we were seated without delay. I though for sure that given the bowling alley, there would be a wait. Shortly after sitting, our waiter stopped by, and after providing the day's specials, he understandingly departed just as quickly since we hadn't yet had a chance to review the menu. Despite two excellent-sounding specials, I instead chose Flatbread's take on my favorite type of pizza: a sausage, sun-dried tomato, caramelized onion, and mushroom offering. I paired this with an Opa Opa Winter Warmer, though I received Opa Opa's Winter Strong Ale instead because the Warmer was no longer available; I'd have preferred that the waiter ask me for an alternate choice rather than making the decision for me, regardless of whether or not I would have ultimately ordered the Strong Ale. Our pizzas arrived quickly, and noticing that it was sliced into rectangles, I grabbed my first sliver without hesitation. I was not disappointed by my choice in any way. The bold flavors of the maple fennel sausage and sun-dried tomatoes worked well together, while the mushrooms and caramelized onions added a noticeable and pleasing depth to the mix. The dough is thicker than I prefer, though far from a deep-dish style, and neither significantly enhances nor unduly detracts from the pizza. In almost no time at all, I finished three quarters of a large pizza, contradicting Flatbread's proposition that this size could comfortably feed two people. I truly enjoyed my pizza, but the noise level, combined with the waiter choosing an alternative beer for me, marred my experience. As for the physical location itself, it is sparsely decorated save an expansive montage of images of Davis Square. The kitchen is open, allowing diners to watch as the staff deftly spins pizza dough in the air and carefully navigates the two large, wood-fired ovens. Despite their worn appearance, the chairs are also quite comfortable. The ambiance overall is very relaxed, making for a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon or to unwind after a round of bowling. read more

Pizza and bowling--Sounds like a great combination in theory. 4 stars for the pizza: The Coevolution and BBQ pork pizzas were delicious! The topping balanced on the crust and everything was properly cooked. I love that they use organic produce, free range chicken, and nitrate free meats. 2 stars for the organization: The wait was 1hr 45min for party of 3.....seriously?? I know it's a busy Fri. night but that's just crazy. We were able to snag seats at the bar for dinner. When we left the hostess couldn't even find my name on the list. 3 stars for the service: The bartenders were our server and they did a great job considering how busy it was. 3 stars for the bar: Good selection of microbrews and local beer at reasonable prices. 0 stars for the bowling: The place was crawling with kids at 9pm and the wait for a lane was 2+ hours!! I was completely against this place when it first opened. It opened in my neighborhood to much fanfare and I stayed away on principal for the first six months because I hated the idea of the place - it was loud, pizza with out substance, nothing else on the menu. But you know what, take away all that and the pizza is damned good. I have yet to have one that I don't like. I find that we end up there about one time each month on a Saturday afternoon or evening. Crispy crusts, fresh melted cheese. Delicious toppings. My favorite is the Homemade Sausage with fennel, carmelized onions, mushrooms, and cheese. The flatbread fire oven process is awesome to watch. The noise level is nothing less than obnoxious, particularly when there's a rag tag team of 100 young bowlers. Again, take away all that, the pizza is good and I think that they have figured out how to tone down the reverberations recently. This past Saturday, my friends and I were lucky enough to sit at a table pretty much right in front of the oven. Watching the pizza guy with his wooden spatula throw in and shift pies around the flaming wood embers is entertaining in and of itself. Good drinks are made with local vodkas and gins if you ask. The bottle of Tempranillo was a little cool at first but warmed up nicely and breathed itself into an empty bottle. The special this night was a sausage and pepper flatbread. The peppers were delicious, orange, green and yellow. Soft and fresh. My only beef is that it was a blah. It was the only pizza I really have not enjoyed thoroughly while eating at Flatbread. I'll give it a simple "poor combination of ingredients." What am I trying to say? I love sausage and pepper pizza. However, in this case, compared to the deliciousness I normally enjoy at flatbread, this one particular pizza just wasn't all that. They get a pass, it was the special after all so my only recommendation is this - order off the regular menu, there's a reason they're "regulars." I have to say, I genuinely enjoy this place. This place was alright but it's not for everybody. It is a very hipster-friendly establishment. If you're in college it's great. If you're a parent with little kids it might also be good because it's so loud in there the kids probably won't annoy anybody too much. The pizza was actually very tasty but you can eat an entire pizza yourself in one sitting, no leftovers. I like leftovers. I don't remember what my service was like, I think it was fine. I just remember that there is bowling going on in the same room and it's really loud. Another thing that is not for me is the communal seating. There are a couple of individual tables but mostly long benches where you sit with a bunch of other people. I'm just not that friendly. I prefer a nice small table or better yet a booth. I'd go back but during off hours so I would have the best chance of not sitting next to a bunch of strangers. read more

I figure that the highest review one can give would be to say "If I lived nearby, I'd be here all the time". Honestly, who can't envision themselves eating the pizza or bowling on the hottest summer day - or the snotty, rainy 33^F March evening? Or all the combinations in between. It's bright (unlike lots of bowling alleys), wide open, and not as noisy as one might think. And the pizza - well, I'd been to the flatbread place in VT yrs and yrs ago, again wishing there was one nearby. Now, I can at least find it w/in a half hour. Granted, I went to the soft opening of Flatbread Pizza in Somerville, and the pizza was free. My review might have been typed with rose-colored glasses. Regardless, I'll be back to confirm. Organic flatbread pizza in a bowling alley, with locally sourced ingredients? Yes please. The atmosphere is fun, light and a tad on the crunchy side. The salad was fresh (produce from the Somerville farmers' market). The cheese pizza was good - great crust (my dining companion considered it "ok") and the whatever herbs that were sprinkled on top were mighty tasty. Next time though I'm definitely trying the Somerville pizza - it looked better. Dessert list was fantastic - warm brownie with fudge sauce, ginger bread with pumpkin ice cream (soon they will have a homemade root beer float - very excited about that). I didn't get to experience the bowling, but it looked fun. It's candlepin so a weakling like myself stands a chance to get the ball to the end of the alley. I'm usually not one to worry too much about organic or healthy, but this place makes me reconsider that. Ok, no it doesn't, but it does go a long way towards proving that healthy doesn't have to be gross... I went with a large group - the true test for service. The salads looked great, but I don't eat green things. The pizzas were yummy. I loved how they were sliced for sharing. The beer was cold and the server rocked. She didn't flinch at the special requests and we never waited more than 3 minutes for a beer. I'll definitely be back with a crowd. read more

I really should have been the first to review this place since I walked by every single day before it finally opened on my way home from work. However, I guess my review has more credibility now that i've been there about 6 times in the last 2 weeks. i'll start by mentioning how wonderful the bar is including their amazing micro-brew selection and the appropriately friendly bar-staff. I felt quite at-home on that stool on my first visit. On my second trip there, I sampled two different kinds of their pizza. After watching the pizza get made with fresh, local ingredients and seeing it make its way to the stone hearth oven, I was pretty sure I would be nothing short of impressed. It was delicious. Also I went back yesterday (wednesday) and they were using produce from the Davis farmer's market for the salads. They can also make any pizza and some of their desserts without gluten. Which is great if you can't tolerate the gluten, or if you hang out with people who just choose not to eat it. Love this place. It fits in very well in Davis Square. read more

This place not only has a dining area, but you can also order off their menu while bowling there. I like how this restaurant focuses on using local produce for everything they have on their menu (so FYI Sam Adams is NOT actually produced here anymore apparently, but the staff are happy to help recommend another local brew). Their smaller size is perfect for sharing with two people if you aren't looking for a big meal, or perhaps order a salad if you'd want a bit more to share. We got their sausage pizza, which they make homemade without any nitrates, sulfates, etc., YAY! read more
