This was a HUGE step up from the Quanta's Business Lounge, but even then, you notice some things that are lacking. It's not necessarily their fault but it is what it is. They are the Amex Centurion Lounge... run by Plaza Premium. I don't believe I've had a chance to try a Plaza premium lounge so is this what would be expected? Possibly. In any case for an AMEX lounge it definitely was lacking in 2 places: the bar and the seating. This is without a doubt, the smallest centurion lounge that I've been to. Really not that much seating compared to others, yet still much more accommodating than the average priority lounge. Service: They were transitioning meals at the time and so it took a good chunk of time before we could actually get food. The sign asked for 20 minutes to change over. Realistically, it shouldn't take 20 minutes just to swap out food. If that's the case, then you should leave up the previous meal service so that people can get what they need and leave if they're in a rush. Then just transition the food to the next meal when the food is ready. As for the table, it took a while to lock in a table and get it cleaned. We had asked the workers, whenever they get a chance to please wipe down a couple of dirty tables of people who had left but it took a while for anyone to come over. By the time someone had come, we already started just getting drinks. As for the bar, it moved VERY SLOW but I don't hold that against them. They had a combo alcohol/coffee bar. At the time it was one person running both sides so it took my family a very long time to get their coffees. Because of this, I decided not to get coffee. The woman working the counter did her best and she was so nice. Eventually another person came to help her so it started to move much faster. When she came over to the bar side the woman was able to pump those drinks out quickly. The downside to the alcohol side of the bar, it's not at the level of a typical centurion lounge. I'm used to a large full bar with plenty of offerings, and more importantly, its own cocktail list inspired by the location but this place did not have that. Maybe because it's technically a plaza premium lounge? As for the food I will say I was pleasantly surprised for the most part. A good selection of substantial food. Some of the foods include:"salads," cakes, noodles, a veggie dish with tofu, pizza and even braised beef bourguignon. Big negative mark for dirty forks. read more

The food isn't bad at all here. I wouldn't say it's the best Centurion Lounge, but it's not the worse. The walk is what kills you. Hopefully you don't have a flight through a gate with single digits, it's a walk. It's located on the lower floor with the other lounges. It's located near Gates 50-63 in the Depatures area. The decor is nice and there chairs are comfortable. The drinks are easy to get to and the area is wide open. I came during the evening on a Saturday and the place is empty. There are a lot of outlets by each table and the music is quite soothing. The service here is really good. The bartender was very friendly and quick. The waiters here are very attentive and take your dirty plates quite quickly. Overall, if you have an international flight, this will satisfy you for your trip back to the states. The clean sitting areas and decent selection of beers will make sure that your flight is a sleepy one. read more

The Centurion Lounge Sydney is located in terminal 1 near gates 50-63. Take the elevator one level down to access the lounge. The attendant at the front was friendly making check in a breeze. I provided my boarding pass in exchange for a shower card. There are 3 showers available for use. One of the first things I immediately notice was that this lounge was surprisingly not busy, which I liked. They have self service hot foods and a special lunch menu that is made to order. If you order from the special menu, you will be given a buzzer to notify you when your meal is ready to be picked up. There are lots of seating and charging ports for your devices. read more

This is the second Centurion Lounge I've experienced, the first was in Melbourne, Australia. Both are quite comparable offering basic lounge experience and amenities, and a place for a bit of quite away from the bustle of the main terminal. I stopped in here briefly while attempting to check out a few of the lounge options in Sydney. The Centurion Lounge ended up being the middle of the pack, offering full service bar, and an open kitchen serving freshly-cooked meals, but the ambiance is otherwise a bit dark and depressing compared to other lounge options. When I visited on a weekend evening, the lounge was mostly empty, meaning no wait. I usually like empty places, but for reasons I can't quite quantify the empty Amex lounge felt weird. There's also a very awkward roped off area for Centurion cardholders in a highly visible area of the lounge. Why anyone would actually sit there I don't know, as I can't see any benefit to it other than being recognized by other lounge guests as having the highest-tier card. Who cares? I approached the bar, and was greeted by a friendly British-born bartender who asked what I wanted. I inquired to the whisky selection and appreciated his frank assessment of the Scotch selection as "not great stuff" either Grants or Ballantine's, both blended whiskies. Can't even spring for a Glendfiddich for my annual card fee? I opted for the Grant's. It was better than I expected, easy drinking and approachable. After the whisky I filled up my water bottle at a nice water tap located near the main seating area, and left in search of a better experience. The Amex Lounge in Sydney was a utter disappointment considering the centurion lounges around the world are awesome. On my journey to Sydney I used the centurion lounge in Dallas and it was first class. Now I guess this one ain't a centurion and that might be the difference. Right off the bat I was early so headed to the lounge. The front desk even though she was acting nice was like you have a 3 hour maximum stay and that bothered me. Got inside and not a seat to be had. Now I understood why she said what she said. Completely cramped this lounge instead of relaxing the passengers pretty much stresses them out. The only good thing was the fast high speed WiFi. Amex is a top brand and customer pay top dollar to expect the best of the best. This one was an utter disappointment. Old carpet. No USB connections. Dining area in front of kitchen has roughly 11 tables and all the smaller seating options were marked reserved so solo travelers end up taking up an entire table for 4-6 people. When I first read of the lounge, I was intrigued. Since it was not called a Centurion Lounge, I was also apprehensive of what I would expect. Fortunately, it was a Centurion Lounge in all but name. Due to the travel gods sabotaging my return flights, I ended up having few hours to experience the lounge. Because of overcrowding, there was a sign at the reception desk limiting guests to those with flights within three hours. The lounge was about half to three-quarters crowded. Luckily, I found several empty seats with wall outlets at the opposite end from the food bar. There were both cold (e.g., sandwiches and salad) and hot options (e.g., Indian butter chicken and Italian pasta). I must have been in the middle of a menu change when I first approached. The signage for the pasta did not match the actual dish. Knowing how popular Italian cuisine is with Australians, especially with my experiences in Darlinghurst, I considered it odd these folks would not know their Italian dishes. When I returned for a second helping of the pasta, the dish was switched to match the signage. For beverages, the staff were working as both baristas and bartenders for wine and cocktails. Soda and beer were available in a self-serve fridge. My only complaint is the restroom capacity. Unlike the domestic Centurion Lounges, the men's and women's restrooms were only single occupancy. I wondered if folks are accustomed to leaving the lounge if the line was too long and return. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to find an AMEX lounge in the Sydney airport. Maybe I hadn't thought to look, because I assumed AMEX lounges were only in select North American airports, but no matter, we stumbled upon this lounge prior to our SYD-SFO return flight, and considered it a major score. This lounge is *not* a Centurion-branded lounge - those are the ones only found in some American airports. However, it looks and feels fairly similar inside, even if the food and drink options are more limited. We were in here for about 2 hours, and for whatever reason, unlike the Centurion lounge at our home airport of MIA, this one never really developed much of a crowd. While somewhat small, there was still ample seating, plenty of outlets to charge our various electronic devices, and good free Wi-Fi. This lounge does not have the super duper Jim Meehan-curated specialty cocktail menus of the "real" Centurion lounges, unfortunately, but you can get plenty of decent beer and wine, as well as more simplistic cocktails and straight-up pours of nice quality spirits. It seemed like they could probably make you an Old Fashioned here, but if you asked for a Corpse Reviver No 2 or what have you, they would likely look at you as if you have 2 heads, but whatever - you still have options. If you're not drinking alcohol, ample coffee and tea is available, as well as several fresh juices that I found quite refreshing after having a beer. This lounge helped make our wait in the Sydney airport much more pleasant than it otherwise would have been, so I was very thankful to find it. read more

Wow this place was insanely crowded! We grabbed the last two seats but sheesh if we got up people would run immediately over for the seat. After a few incidents like that we had to put our huge backpacks and coats on the chairs. I felt horrible for the staff there but received such unprofessional service from one of them. In this lounge you do not prepare your coffee yourself there's ONE barista making the coffee for everyone and it is delivered to you by only ONE waitress. As I placed 2 coffee orders I received attitude but chalked it up to I get it she's busy and overwhelmed. In my mind I thought maybe someone else should take the order seeing as she was so busy making drinks. I pointed all the way down to where we were sitting for when they were ready to deliver the coffee. As we sat there at this point 15-20 mins had passed I saw the waitress walking around aimlessly and what looked like to me random people just taking the few coffee cups she had. After 25 mins I thought maybe someone took our coffee since there is no order here and it is all disorganized. After 30 mins I got up and went to ask. I thought I was pretty patient here considering my order was 1 black coffee and 1 decaf with milk!!! After 30 mins I approached and was spoken to rudely. Before I could say anything was told by the barista " I told you it would be a while ok now go we will bring it" I replied I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't given to someone else at this point she looks at her paper and says it had been delivered! I said ok well not to me and then I heard my name being called by my fiancée. They had just been delivered. After the coffee which is all we wanted we left right after. This lounge was far from a lounge. People scattered all over the floor due to lack of sitting. I'm sure when less crowded it's a better experience but for me it was a poor one and not up to American Express standard. read more

Have access to this lounge through my US American Express Platinum. American Express is really trying to make their cards more appealing in travelers. In the US there are a number of Centurion Lounges in major airports (but not Chicago for some reason). The American Express Lounge at SYD is an extension of these Lounges but without the Centurion branding. The lounge is smaller than the 'Centurion Lounges' you find in the US, maybe even smaller than the Centurion Studio at SEA. However, with a full bar and food options it's in many ways on par with the full size Lounges in the US. Food options were good as was the full bar. The lounge was pretty empty the first time we passed through and crowded the second time, however, in both instance we were able to find seats. There's a great view from the lounge, and the gate immediately in front of it is one of the ones that can service A380's so it's likely you'll see one of these jumbo jets sitting at the gate. The only downside in my opinion is that it's only near gates 24-26 and the bathrooms are both single bathrooms. But both of these are minor nitpicks in an otherwise good lounge. read more

The Amex Lounge is new, classy, and relaxing, just what you need when you're waiting to get on a long haul flight. Ambience is excellent. There's subtle Christmas decorations, it's quiet and a lot more enjoyable than my previous experience at the Qantas business class lounge. Service is excellent. The waiter approached me every so often to ask if I wanted any more drinks and cleared up my used plates and cutlery as soon as I went up to the buffet area for a second round of food. Food is limited. There are only 4 hot food trays for breakfast (scrambled eggs, chicken sausages, baked beans and waffles), 2 trays of pastries, fruit and cheeses, a coffee stand where you order and they bring it to you, and a decent drinks selection. It was a little cramped but flying a day before Christmas, it's to be expected. Still a lot less crowded than the Qantas lounge. The limited food selection lets down the lounge. This lounge is pretty small. There are plenty of comfortable seats but I can see it getting filled quickly. Luckily, our flight was later in the night so there weren't too many people around to use it. Drink selection is limited but they had top shelf liquor like gray goose and Chivas. I believe there were only two beers on draft, an Australian beer and Heineken. Food selection is limited. Not the biggest or most lavish lounge out there but for the size, it had plenty to offer and it was a nice, quiet oasis in busy SYD. read more

If you're used to other airport lounges, this one will disappoint you. And this is for sure no Centurion Lounge. Unless you want free food no matter what, it's not really worth using, especially if your departure gate isn't immediately next to it. First, it's really small, which is weird, considering the size of SYD airport. Why you'd care is because it's really crowded, so there's not much that makes it feel like an oasis from the common traveler. Don't deny it - you like airport lounges so you don't have to deal with amateur travelers, bathroom queues or fights for plugs. Not the case here. Every seat was taken, even at the community dining table. There are only 2 toilets (1 man, 1 woman). There's a guaranteed queue. Second, they have a weird, highly inefficient set up at the beverage station: no self-service, even for basic tea or coffee. You have to queue up to put in your order with the barista ("uh, just black coffee for me"), then they ask you where you're sitting (which, given how crowded it is, you hope to have a seat), and then they don't even note your name, only a general vicinity. 25 minutes later (nope, not exaggerating), I heard the server ask 3 other people if they ordered a black coffee before he found me. But, I'm still giving 3 stars because the staff were all nice, there was a solid breakfast spread and I recognize these gripes are trivial, First World issues. I can't wait to return to fabulous Sydney again, but I will likely just pony up the 20 AUD for an immediate coffee & brekkie sando, followed by no queue in the "public" bathroom. read more

We had some time to kill before our flight and my friend has a US Platinum Amex card so we decided to check out the lounge here. Thank goodness I had read about the Amex Lounge on The Points Guy. We arrived toward the tail end of breakfast service and had some danishes, pancakes, waffles, cheese, fruit, chicken sausage, and baked eggs with spinach. I liked the selection and most of the items were pretty decent. The pastries were flaky and warm and the sausage was delicious. The menu lists vanilla and strawberry ice cream but when I asked for it, only vanilla was available. I was fine with that; however, the "ice cream" I got had melted and the cream and water had separated. It was gross and I told the employee about it so he could check to ensure the rest of his ice cream wasn't messed up too. He suggested that since it was now close to lunch time, I should have some of the cheesecake they were putting out instead. I took a piece of the cheesecake and it was terrible. The "crust" was soggy and warped. Bottom line - decent food and drinks but stay away from all desserts. read more

Loving the new AMEX partnership at Sydney Airport. This lounge is one of the newest additions to Sydney Airport and open to people with Platinum or Black American Express cards. The great thing about this place is not many people in Australia seem to own American Express cards (yet) so the lounge even though its "cozy" isn't as crowded. The service here is extremely attentive and I'm a bit addicted to that orange juice and champagne cocktail here. The dinnertime food is quite good too (for those who care theres a bit of gluten free / vegan stuff there too). This place like the first class lounge also has views of the runway (in fact its directly opposite from the Qantas First Class Lounge). I think it's a good alternative to the Qantas Business Lounge, but probably not match the qantas first lounge (which is up there with one of the best lounges in the world). read more

Great escape from the hustle and bustle of SYD airport. The lounge is small, but the service is great. They have good food choices from fresh fruit/cheese to some hot foods such as waffles and baked egg. I was there in the morning so I only know of the breakfast choices. They have a coffee bar to order lattes and coffees. They also have a bar to get some libations and a fridge stocked with sodas and sparking water. The restrooms have automated doors but there is only 1 stall for men and 1 for women. The lounge is great, however it is on the smaller end and can get a bit crowded at times. read more
