The well-known American Market grocery store recently moved down the street and opened a Diner on the street level. I heard about it from someone on FB (https://www.facebook.com/groups/132683256821749/) so I thought I'd try it out.
Looks really American Diner-y inside. Booths, a counter with swivel chairs, standard "old time" paraphernalia on the wall. Very bright. Staff wearing checkered aprons and so on. Late afternoon, after the lunch rush and before dinner time, so it was not full, but still almost half the tables in use. There were about 10 booths and about 10 chairs at the counter.
Simple menu for now: Fries, Burgers, Hot Dogs, Drinks, some desserts. Burgers and Hot Dogs don't come *with* fries. The cheapest fries order is 6.00 CHF. Cheapest burger is 15.50. A simple hot dog cost the same!!!!
I ordered Plain Hamburger, Chili Cheese Fries and a Vanilla Milkshake - really looking forward to that! (There are no good milkshakes in this town, that I can find. Well, Burger King's are OK.)
The hamburger tasted great. It had a "Medium-Well" marker in it, but they didn't ask me how I liked it (Medium-rare, as it turns out.) It had actual leaves of lettuce and slices of tomato! Yay! But, it was too big around and the bread was not "strong" enough to handle it. It fell apart pretty soon. I would have been happy with a burger about 2/3 the size of this one.
The chili cheese fries......The fries were standard, run-of-the-mill fries, but "chili" turned out to be just kidney beans. And the cheese was the bare minimum of cheddar shavings. For the record, chili in American diners is more focused on the ground beef and the chili seasonings, not the kidney beans. So, this was a big disappointment.
The milkshake was a little ice cream which had already melted in the glass of milk by the time I got it. I sent it back but didn't say much because I thought it was just another case of non-Americans trying to do an American milkshake and really blowing it. Plus, the FB person had said "Be sure to try the Oreo milkshake." Well, I did say something when it came time to pay the bill. They checked it and said, "Yeah, that was not right." So, they'll make me another one next time. :)
In summary, kind of pricey, very small so get there early or just plan on waiting, food is OK but could get *much* better easily. But, very responsive and helpful staff when it comes to this.
Me, I'm waiting for the Root Beer floats. ;) read more
