It is very hard to find a dance school to teach salsa in the area so this was a great find!

I attended the 1-day workshop in NYC with Saroj Khan this past weekend. No disrespect to the…read moreorganizers, but I thought it was really unfair to charge $100 a person (not inexpensive!) and then to find out upon arrival that two workshops had been combined into one giant class in a studio space that could not adequately accommodate the attendees. If this workshop had been less costly, I'd be more understanding, but there's no justification for the cost when instead of an intimate experience, I felt like I was in the middle of a giant herd. Space was not limited as advertised and it was clear that this event was oversold. In addition, there was a line outside of the studio at the start of the class for registration, which seemed inefficient and a waste of time if you had pre-registered and pre-paid for the event - then, what was the point of the initial registration? This caused the class to start late. Once the workshop began, it was very difficult to follow the dance instruction from even the middle of the room. I was ready to complain for a refund but ultimately decided not to only because of the wonderful instructor, Rujuta Vaidya - she was extremely nice in a difficult situation and did her best to give personalized attention when she could, which brings me to my next point. I found Saroj Khan's behavior to be lacking - she does most of her teaching seated at the front of the room, which I could understand because of her age and was surprisingly not bad because she's witty and when she offered feedback, it was sharp and insightful. She could easily command the room with her presence; however, her feedback was selective - usually when calling out mistakes abruptly. Her indelicate treatment of students was not a big issue to me because I personally didn't mind candid feedback to improve our dance skills and Saroj can be very entertaining; however, there's no way, with the size of the class, that she could give the requisite attention to all participants which was a huge letdown given the cost of the workshop. My biggest issue with Saroj was with her treatment of Rujuta, her disciple and the instructor of the workshop. Saroj constantly barked orders at Rujuta in a condescending manner without showing any sort of appreciation that the only reason this class was functioning was because of Rujuta and the other dance assistant. That could even be overlooked, because I understand the familiarity among Guru-disciple relationships, but at one point, in a bad attempt at humor, Saroj insulted Rujuta so shockingly that I don't even want to repeat the details here. I left the experience feeling that Saroj Khan, despite her many accomplishments and clear mastery of dance, was not necessarily someone worthy of admiration. I felt that I had observed an individual, insecure about her fading glory days, who used her authority to belittle those around her to assert her power. It's a shame because it detracts from her praiseworthy legacy. Rujuta handled the workshop like a true professional, holding her head up and dancing so gracefully under pressure, never undermining her Guru although most others would not have had that self-restraint. I left with profound admiration for Rujuta instead although I had just met her. This is the only reason why I did not ask for a refund or leave the class mid-way, despite feeling like we had been conned out of our money for an experience that wasn't as advertised.

The greedy money grubbing daughter took over this place and now they treat every child like they…read moreare cash. Every child is supposed to get a full recital dance regardless of their skill level but at this school they pretend they are too good for that. They will admit to this in their reply. They will say my daughter is a beautiful dancer (yes) but she was not good enough to get a recital dance (no). They don't actually care how well your daughter dances, they care how much money the parents spend. This is not a great school it is a snobby school. I was the worst dancer at my ballet school and I was better than all the dancers at this place. When I took a class at Metuchen dance the teacher said WOW. My daughter danced at Metuchen dance center for 4 years. This is not a lie. I also took a class there for a year. I know this place well. This year they did a ballet. My daughter was in the hobbit dance, or so I thought. Just before the recital my daughter noticed that she and 2 other kids were standing still for most of the dance, while the rest of her class were dancing. It gets worse. At the actual performance she and these 2 girls were at the far far back of the stage, by the back curtain. They were separated from the rest of their class by a huge distance. They weren't in the second row, they were way way back there. They were background decoration. The rest of her large class were dancing at the front of the stage and for a much much longer time. When I complained about how upset we were that my daughter had to stand still and watch the rest of her class dance her dance, a teacher and the head of the studio insisted that all the dancers were dancing for the same amount of time. It's not possible to lie about objective facts. Everybody can see the video and everybody can count. The rest of the class danced for much longer than my daughter. Then Miss Kerri actually told me that my daughter was lying about being upset about this, because she knew the dance was done a month ago. How awful can you be? Don't give your money to these people. They will treat your child like trash and they will not apologize.

I emailed Metuchen Dance Centre a few days ago and received a prompt response. We set up an appointment with Alessandra and with very little notice she helped us out with a beautiful routine that we are now excited to perform in front of our friends and family. I highly recommend this business as well as our instructor who had a great energy that helped me get past my "two left feet"!

I took my 4 year old son here for 3 Bollywood dance classes in total. When my wife called up the…read moreplace initially, we were told that we could bring him for a trial class. This is the first time my son is taking any classes, so we weren't sure. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place given the following facts: - The 2 instructors (who take turn) are very strict and cold to the kids. I think younger kids need more attention and need to be encouraged rather than be spoken harshly. My elder 9 year old daughter has been going to an American Tap school for the last 6 years and I have seen the difference. - The place is unkempt. The three Saturday mornings I went, I found the carpet in the lobby to host all kind of trash and never vacuumed. Maybe the place operates on a lean staff and they do not have this covered. But not a good impression to give newcomers especially. - We had a tiff with the center on the fees. We were charged for the trial class even though we weren't told initially that this class would be charged (In my opinion a trial class is normally free unless stated specifically). Upon pointing this out, we were reimbursed the money in again a very cold hostile way. Hope the center realizes its mistakes in dealing with newcomers and takes this review in a positive constructive manner.
