I've had my haircut by a few of their barbers who have come and gone from the shop so it's hard when it's time to find a new "regular" barber after they depart from the shop on to other things in life. I came in as a walk in and was taken care of by Tony Z. Tony asked me what I wanted with my hair and add a few suggestions. He didn't force his suggestions but I definitely appreciated them. AJ has been my barber for over 10 years now and no matter what I decide to get done, his skill level is quality and makes it happen, from a gentleman's cut to a flat top mullet even the top secret 8 minute fade. Outside of his barber skills, the shop is always fun with music, banter back and forth, the occasional ringing of the bell and overall atmosphere is chill. Outside of American Barbershop is not always talked about. What this man has done for every community he reaches has only benefited that community. I decided to go to American Barbershop for a few reasons-their new orange shop was closer to me than the Santa Ana one and super convenient, and since I've known AJ for a while I wanted to give him my business. I've been coming to get my haircut with AJ since 2016 when he was running the American barbershop in Downtown Santa Ana. Now the business has grown and he's opened this location in Old Town Orange. All of the shops have the authentic look and feel of a traditional barber shop. Come in have a beer and catch up with the barbers or the other clients. Everyone is welcome here. For years AJ has cut my hair and given me all kinds of hair cuts. Taper/fade mohawk, mullet, buzz cut, comb over, slick back you name it he's done it for me. He knows what he is doing and has ALWAYS given me clean cuts. I can never keep the ladies off me after I leave this place. Even on days when he has back to back appointments from 9am-6pm!! (Just make sure you're on time for your appointment and he will have you looking right.) Recently I have been getting my hair cuts with Jose and the quality of his cuts, professionalism, and customer service are of a high caliber as well. (To be expected with ANY barber in these shops). Although I can't play favorites I will say the beard service Jose provides is bar none. Definitely try it if you're looking to get lined up FRESH. I did a walk in and wanted a faux hawk with the sides of my hair brought in just like any normal faux hawk looks like. At first, the barber I had was chatting and really friendly. By the time the haircut was done which was an hour later, I asked if he can bring the sides in while also apologizing for asking what I wanted. He doesn't respond and say anything but proceeds to try and cut my hair again. By the time he finishes, it's been over an hour and thirty minutes and tells me at the register that he's going to charge me for two hair cuts because of how long it took. There was at no point during the haircut that he told me he was going to charge me twice and I thought me asking for an adjustment wasn't a second hair cut. I immediately told him this and he threatened to call his manager over. I told him sure because at no point during the haircut he told me. A few seconds later, he said "whatever man" almost as if he was bluffing me?! This place has decent reviews and is known for being patient but I got a complete 180 experience. Other barber shops get a faux hawk done in thirty minutes and already know to bring the sides in with the haircut.
