If I could give them a less than zero rating it would be far more accurate On October 7, 2024 I flew from RNO to DFW for a shooting event. As always, I checked my hard sided Pelican gun case secured with 2 large padlocks When i arrived in Dallas my gun case was the first piece of baggage off the carousel. This was odd as guns are typically hand carried to the office. The first thing I notice is there's a padlock missing and the double hasps lined with steel are completely ripped open. I made a beeline to the baggage office The first thing the attendant asks is "Are there guns in there" "There were. Im hoping they still are" He tells me to scan a code and file a claim saying "Guns are supposed to be hand carried here not put on the conveyor " He was right because anyone could have stolen them I start the claim process then walk outside to verify the guns, silencer and everything else is there. They were but now I have no way to transport them home because the case has been compromised AA tells me to either buy another gun case and locks or ship the guns homeand send the receipt for reimbursement. I send pictures, receipts, details, etc. i ask for $400 to pay for the case, shipping, etc AA denies the claim as cosmetic damage even though they admitted i couldn't fly with gunns in this case because it couldn't be locked If you get a live person they lie to you and pass the buck. This ordeal has been going on for 6 weeks. Id rather fly spirit or frontier than these grifters read more

The fees they charge are offensive. You have to pay for a seat, $150 for a pet that travels in a carrier under the seat, $465 for a 79 lb cooler full of fish. It's gotten out of hand. I won't fly American again if I have a choice. read more

Over the course of 2020 I've had multiple opportunities to fly American Airlines out of the Reno Tahoe airport. This experience has always included the full service check in. The ladies and gentlemen that work this counter are extremely professional and proactive helping their customers. Needless to say I prefer Flying American Airlines out of Reno more than Southwest. American Airlines employees are more polished, plus they laugh at my jokes. read more

On June 19, 2023, my husband and I were flying from Buffalo, NY to Reno, NV on American Airlines (AA). When we landed at O'Hare airport after the first segment of our trip, we discovered several text messages waiting for us, first stating our flight had been delayed, then delayed again, then cancelled and rebooked for the next day. We went to AA customer service to see if they could find a flight for the same day. AA was able to find a flight for us with United that would get us home the same day, but very late. I asked if there were any earlier flights on United, or perhaps with Southwest, and AA said there was not and directed us to the United counter to get checked in. Once there, we were lucky enough to meet Teal (see my review for United) who was very helpful and was able to find us a flight on United that would get us home a few hours earlier. I also called Southwest, and they had a flight available that would get us home even sooner. My complaint is that AA apparently didn't feel like bothering to check for earlier flights. On a minor note, we had landed at O'Hare at about 7:30 am and the flight that AA booked us on with United was scheduled to depart at about 8 pm, a 12.5 hour wait. I requested food vouchers, and they gave us $12 each. With a bit of sarcasm, I'll say $12 will easily cover an order of fries at an airport and but much more. It doesn't seem as though customer service is a priority at American Airlines. read more

Your best hope is for everything to go smoothly. If there is any issue, trust that American Airlines will not be helpful in making it right. I was left to pay for my own hotel after a mechanical issue caused a delayed flight and a missed connection. The airport service desk will say you need to resolve it online, the online and phone support will point you to the airport. It's a never ending circle that only ends when you give up trying. On the other hand, Southwest was extremely accommodating after an American Air issue forced me to change airlines. When there was much smaller issue (my bag had accidentally gone to the wrong city) they offered a flight voucher and had much better customer service despite it being a small fraction of the inconvenience compared to being left stranded in an unexpected city. I'm going to avoid American Air in the future. read more

I mainly fly with one of American Airlines competitors because of the competitor's ease of seating and "bags fly free". American Airlines happened to have had better choices for my work related trip to Boston. I strategically packed to avoid the $30.00 bag check fee. What I did like about American Airlines is the ability to pre-pick your seats. I was nervous about my boarding priority so I made sure to check in right within the second of that 24 hour time limit before that you are able to check in. I found that my company pays an extra fee for it's employees to get "Group 4" Priority seating which was a big plus to boarding and making sure your bags get carried on vs checked. If you are in one of the other Group numbers (there are 10), especially 8-10, you're basically screwed if the plane is full. Go ahead and surrender to checking your bag. I did not like the automated announcement for boarding. It was muffled and hard to hear the group number. The process was not very organized as far as a line. American does not seem to have the "personal touch" that i get with it's competitor. It feels a bit more formal and serious. The plane was clean and felt roomier. I think the baggage area on top my be lower, I didn't have trouble loading my bag. Nice first leg of the trip from Reno to Los Angeles. Smooth sailing! read more

So at first glance, while sitting at the gate and watching the staff and listening to the process try have for each flight, was a little irritating. There has got to be 10 Different "levels" of boarding. In the end, only 3 groups end up going. The entire staff from start to finish seem like they done love their jobs. The bland unimpressed attitudes and the level and grouping confusion they get docked a star. Now , let's get on to the good stuff the plane is off the Hook!! They have leather beautiful seats with plenty of room for your butt to fit. The seats look brand new and are super comfie :) . Oh, did I mention they have electrical plugs !! I know!! Shut the front door!! I have never seen this on a plane... AND!! there is room for you to put storage stuff in the head rest in front of you! Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! The plane is crazy clean and smells like "new plane" smell , ha ha. I love this and will remember all of these awesome feature when I have to fly for more than an hour!! American Air!! One star is entirely too good for American Airlines. A friend and I booked our flight for a July convention in Japan in February. Today we get an email that states our 6 AM flight has been changed to 8:15 AM arriving LA at 10:02 AM. Our American airline connection flight to Japan leaves at 10:50 AM. According to my math, that leaves us 48 minutes, assuming no delays, to catch the shuttle (which only runs every 20 minutes) and reach the International terminal. As an International flight there will be another security clearance before we board. And we are supposed to accomplish all this in a mere 48 minutes. In speaking with the rep of the Advantage program of American, they do not have another flight that would get us to LA in time to catch our flight to Japan. Since they don't have any "business policies" with other airlines and because our flight was not canceled just changed, the only option offered was to cancel our flight and rebook. This means we would have to rebook on a United flight to get us to LA in time then rebook our Japan flight costing us almost an additional $500 a piece. Let me once more state that American changed our flight so that we could not make our connection, American offered us nothing in the way of any options or service recovery for our inconvenience or additional charges for a flight, and American didn't even offer an apology for the grief they have caused us in ruining our travel plans. I only wish Alaska airlines was an international carrier. The folks at Alaska have customer service down to a fine science and deserve the recognition they get for being the number one Airline. American Airlines could certainly take a page from Alaska's customer service manual. read more

Waiting in my seat on this plane that hasn't left just for the pooper to be fixed... 5 hour flight just turned to 6 if not more. can't wait for the incoming screaming baby two feet from my seat. I have rewards with them and it's fine I guess except they tried expiring my points but due to Covid I got to request to keep them for now. They over pact their flights...even during Covid. They don't regulate social distancing very well either. I had to sit next to strangers on both my flights. They also give crappy snacks, only small bottle water and a biscuit. They switched gates so many times, so little legroom and only their major flights have entertainment. read more

This is the worst of the worst airlines. Totally unreliable and could care less about the customer. Ruined our vacation by improperly rescheduling our travel after canceling our flight. When I complained, they didn't even read the complaint. I've been a loyal customer since the late 90's. It's over. read more

How bad are they?!?!? Well they have a site dedicated to complaints and no human will dare to have a conversation with you. They have a running record of complaints with no response. Currently their site says they have 192 complaints and have resolved 2. I personally had back to back flight cancellations due to mechanical issues in good weather. Although the staff was nice they are clearly frustrated with the company and the company administration is doing nothing to improve safety or deal with the issues. Best advice is fly with another airline! read more

very disappointed in AA airlines. Had a 8 am flight to Dallas Tx non stop, arrived at the reno airport at 6 am, we were then told our plane was on a 4 hour delay, had to wait at the airport, all that time, not fun, finally got out of Reno at noon. read more

Nadine (on flight AA5994 from Reno to Phoenix) was super rude and bitchy to numerous flyers and especially myself. When she told me to move my bag I did but then she suggested I moved seats and I said I was fine cuz I wanted to stay with my family she rolled her eyes. Before we even left the ground she was rude to me two more times. She said I was not her choice of candidate for emergency exit row then waived her hand right in front of my face when telling me to put my phone in airplane mode. (It already was in airplane mode.) She then proceeded to tell my sister that if she drinks from metal cans she will get plague and Alzheimer's. This was my first flight with American Airlines and because of Nadine, it will probably be my last. read more

This is the worst airline I have ever flown on. They always delay or cancel a flight and expect me to deal with it myself without any warning or compensation. My flight this morning was cancelled and I had to rebook the flight myself for another flight that leaves at midnight... this is terrible. My plans are ruined and I may not be able to reach my destination due to severe weather warnings. Thanks for nothing. I will be flying Delta next time. read more

"great is what were going for" is what this airline stands by however nothing was great about choosing American Airlines! we traveled for a softball tournament from reno to hawaii. booking as a group of 24 which includes 14 minors you would think they would at least keep our group in the same rows or area but NOPE not the case (even when we arrived 2 hrs prior to see if an agent could assist in making the seat changes)! not one of the agents at the gate counter was willing to assist instead his response was "you should of came an hour + a half ago which we were there but no agent was ask the desk until the boarding hour. after getting seated + trying to puzzle piece where all of our minors were seated i asked this flight attendant for assistance or if any seats we unoccupied. she then asked me to show her the minors sitting alone + her response to me was "oh she looks big enough" we by standers seeing us adults trying to move seats within our group to ensure each minor wasn't alone + that overheard our conversation with the flight attendant who was offering to move their seats to help us out. mid-flight i had a child that wasn't feeling well so i wanted some extra bags + water for her. after hitting the assistance button + waiting 15 mins i finally got up to for it myself. it's unbelievable that after you pay all this money to travel + group book that they leave it up to the customers to fix! i will NEVER travel with America Airlines again read more

We had booked a flight to Honolulu in March, 2022 and selected the flights that were conducive to our plans for October, 2022. About 2 months prior to our flight, American Airlines changed the flight times to an early morning flight for our departure and an overnight flight for our return. The overnight flight created an issue for us as we had to ask for a later checkout at our hotel, which we able to get for an additional $150. I contacted the airlines, the company who we booked the vacation package from and could not change it without a hefty cost. I understand flight times may change but the Airlines should then reimburse the customer for their inconvenience. AA changed their flights for THEIR convenience! And, the flight attendance were the worst - ! Never fly AA again! read more

My brother died from a terrible car accident on the other side of the country and we had only flying as a option to his celebration of life. When booking flights (as usual) the only seats together were in the upgrade seats. At this time we needed to be together so had to choose the upgrades. We noticed two days later there were free side by side seatings and tried to change but would still be charged for the upgrade. We were told to get ahold of customer relations for a refund on these upgrades which were denied. It makes me very mad when I see pilots and flight attendances and airline families filling these planes to where we the customers have to pay more while they travel free. I will in all future flights avoid America Airlines and their selfishness and scams! Not only that.......but when waiting for a connecting flight in Dallas, the plane was delayed three hours and once the plane came in, the pilot fell asleep on the tarmac with customers on board. The flag crew and customer service check in lady was flagging him for over 20 minutes. Freakin joke!! read more

Personally the worst service I have ever received in Reno. First, they send no information about being 2 hours early in confirmation emails for international flights, so I came my normal 1 hour early to receive swear words from the lady checking me in... Then be told my 10k vaca plans I won't make and just wait... they will do nothing to make it to my gate in time. I shake my leg nervously in line, while I wait in the security process and had my perfume go through security with out being separated.... strong security skills. I sprint through the airport, running 6 miles an hour or more with laptop bag and personal bag with passport info.... to get to my gate to be told I am fine, and I am early when security told me I won't make it. This is horrible service and made my morning a living h l double hockey sticks. Never again will I fly with this airline. I checked in online early and checked my email before leaving, they have no information on online check ins with international travel. I have never been so offended by an airline and I have flown allegiant, and was happy with the service over all. read more

American Airlines out of Phoenix is the worst! It started with the Sky Cap who lectured me that my name (ID) and the city I was flying to was not good enough! I should have the flight number. Southwest is great with that info and can find my reservation. THEN...they would not change my seat as they had me in a seat without under the seat storage. I am 67 years old and have spine issues. American Airlines is COVID Death In the Air. COVID Death in the Air! Totally irresponsible, and we've got the money to sue if i get COVID. Connected thru PHX to LAX today, May 14th, AA760 was promised at check-in at origination "oh, your flights are 1/2 empty, no problem." Reality: Aircraft PHX - LAX was very full, most rows shoulder to shoulder 3 per row all seats. "oh, everyone has to wear a mask"... Nope, most could care less, most coughing and with no mask -- couldn't care less. Flight Attendants, stayed away, could not be bothered to enforce masks, and Airline will take no action against those who refuse. Guess what, the airline has an obligation to provide a safe environment to each passenger. If one passenger has a bottle of acid, and threatening others, Airline must act reasonably to protect passengers...this is no different. Either get sick with the many others -- or stay away from American Airlines!! On the bright side -- we've got ventilators now, so you'll only have scarred lungs for life, but not die right away. read more

Our flight from Reno to lax has been delayed 4 times in the past 3 hours and now as had another 1 hour delay. They don't even announce an update as to why there flight is delayed and how long they think it will be, I'm just learning because of the text updates. When you ask the lady at the desk at our gate she is very rude and will not even offer any kind of help. The airline right next to them (frontier) had a short delay but at least offered coupons for food and drinks and at least played a game over the loud speaker. Lovely experience today with American Airlines flying the direct from Reno to Chicago. The staff were friendly and helpful. Smooth sailing from arrival at airport to take off. I appreciate sincerely a smooth airport experience, as so many are not! I've probably flown over 600,000 miles on American alone and have been anywhere from a Gold to Platinum level flyer for most of the last many years. Since their recent merger with US Airways, flying out of Reno means many more options now. If you are headed to the East Coast for example, you're now more likely to have a layover via PHX rather than DFW. Recently, I had a family emergency and needed to fly to PHL at the very last minute. I was desperate, in the midst of grief, and not looking forward to what most likely was a very expensive last minute flight. I already had a flight using miles booked in advance for the Thanksgiving holidays, and with the patience of a very kind and sympathetic agent, I was able to rebook the flights to depart within 24 hours - at no extra charge and using no additional miles. The connections were actually great and very convenient and on most legs, I had my own row and got aisle seats up front. The day before I was supposed to fly back to RNO, I called one more time and again, they were able to get me on a much earlier flight that got me back into town at noon instead of midnight. Most of this, I know, was due to sheer luck and seat availability, but still, I was very appreciative at the good nature of the AA agents online who assisted me. Is AA perfect? Nope, certainly not. I can tell you lots of crazy stories about my many international trips using AA. But because of this recent incident, I will remain loyal to American Airlines. read more

I will never fly American Airlines again, and discourage everyone else from doing so also. Every flight was late on a three leg trip. The employees were all rude and yelled at my family and other employee at the gate. This is the absolute worst airline I have ever been on; and to make it worse, my family was going to a funeral which is the reason for the last minute trip in the first place. We were delayed for a known mechanical issue, a sick pilot, and putting the wrong de-icer on each leg. And, the airline refused to allow an upgrade to first class even though we were willing to pay whatever the cost because we were not members is the airline's club with points in an account. Who refuses to take money!?! I recommend almost any other airline over American. They changed gates several times and the online service and monitors did not reflect this. If I could give negative stars, I would. read more

American Airlines, nothing good to say and what absolutely NASTY reservation agents you have. I have a AA citibank card and in the fine print it says you and up to 4 travelers on the same reservation get Group 1 boarding. Well someone lied, I call Citibank they agreed with me on the wording and they call American to check, the American Agent said No and was so nasty to the bank representative too, even saying "what are some travel agent, no you idiot she works for your credit card sponsor. So even if you follow all the rules, expect American to give you the BIG MIDDLE FINGER if you try to claim your rightful benefits. Unfortunately with all the mergers you have NO choice, so expect the worst and you will not be disappointed with them. read more

Zero Stars if I could! Flight was scheduled for 11:15 am Boarding Time. Almost immediately they were asking for 30 people to volunteer to be bumped. After we were loaded into the plane, we sat on the ramp for about an hour when the Captain comes back on and says 'due to a safety issue, we are returning to the gate'. The safety issue was the crew was already over their flight hours, REALLY you didn't realize this before? REALLY!!!!!!!!!! So my flight has been delayed for 9 hours and I will have a 6 hour layover in Chicago. By the time reach my destination I will be in airports/airplanes for 24 hours straight. Also, they made us wait in a 2+ hour line to order to rearrange our flights and they told us that they took everyones luggage off the plane (the plane that we will be using at 8pm) and made people re-go through security. People who went through security to get their bags claimed that not everyones bag was taken off and they had to walk through security twice for no reason. read more

Negative experience over here. Checking in bags we got a lot of flack for packing more efficiently. Really strange because it'd be saving the airlines less hassle with less bags. Basically you can have 1 ski bag and one boot bag per person. We had 2 ski bags and one boot bag containing both pairs of boots. We had to separate our boots which was inconvenient and were scolded by the front desk agent. Very poor service, and when asked where this policy was she replied "You should've checked online!" Woah lady. Calm yourself please? We just wanted to know where we could find this info. Besides this, upon arrival into Reno our skis ended up being cut at the tips - totally unprofessional handling on +$1000 equipment. I will admit we were helped by another agent after not getting anywhere with our first unfriendly agent. First agent had red hair, and stepped away as we began to figure out why she was so frustrated... only to "help" another group of customers which ended poorly as they encountered the same issue. This problem did not happen in LAX check in, only in Reno with this one agent. Bottom line - don't talk to your customer with such terrible tone.
