One time, years ago, I informed my wife that I was planning to spend thousands of dollars on a home theater setup. My wife shot back that her suspicions were correct, my brain had ceased functioning in any coherent sensible way. Promises were made for future self to keep and I got that setup and yet... I still go to the theater because the experience can't be beat. And nobody does the experience better than AMC. From the comfortable reclining seats to the giant screens and pristine sound quality, everything is in place for an immersive adventure. If you want to enjoy your movie with a cocktail or an $18 soft drink and popcorn combo, they got that covered too. (Nostalgia ain't cheap) I recently went to see Stop Making Sense, the Talking Heads concert film on IMAX. It was incredible, people were singing and dancing in the aisles. Our tickets told us the wrong theater so we asked the guy at the front door who checks tickets and we had to go to the other side to get my cousins sister and the guy was being hostile and wouldn't let us get her threatened to kick us out they should really work on costumer service and train them how to act in a work place. read more

It's a large theater with 20 screens and great staff. Wish they weren't understaffed, but happens more often than not. I'd give higher stars but they do lack in cleanliness which I'm sure is due to being under staffed. read more

I understand that theaters are hurting, and that they need advertising. But I took my kids to see a movie and we literally had to sit through almost 30 minutes of previews. To the point that they were so restless by the time the movie started that we only made it about 45 minutes. It's ridiculous. So much easier to just stream something and stay home. First time here since moving to Missouri. The theater is a lot nicer than the concession area itself. I felt it needed a little bit of work to make it a little more cleaner? Overall, the staff was friendly, and the popcorn was fresh. We dealt with friendly staff at the concessions stand, and found our theatre with the directions given to us by the usher. The theatre itself was clean. No trash, comfy seats and they all reclined! Haha That's a hard thing to find back in California. Did I mention they have seat vibrators and warmers? The sound quality was amazing. We were in hall 14. I had to use the restrooms 2 times and they were both clean, and stocked. Everybody here was helpful and I will comeback. This isn't the absolute worst theater I've ever been to, but it has shockingly poor management. On two occasions I've seen patrons smoking and vaping during the movie. On the second occasion, not only was the patron vaping, but he entered the theater towards the end of the movie, then opened his phone and immediately started scrolling. Not only did management not care, but they wanted me to leave for complaining about it. (Maybe the guy was the manager's son.) In any case, I'm done with them for good. Definitely not worth it. Oh, and their close-captioning devices only work occasionally. Save your money. See your movies somewhere that cares about its patrons and the theater-going experience. read more

Since Moving back to KC, I haven't been to the movies much. We are avid movie goers. When I was younger, we used to come this this theater all the time. It's not far from me and I'm an AMC Stubs member. I like this theater because the seats are comfy for the most part. I don't raise the feet because I'm short and it makes the back move. This causes me to be uncomfortable. No biggie, I just don't use that function. We love popcorn and so far, it has been pretty good. I like being able to butter and add salt myself. It makes sure I get the right amount. It's always a good experience and being a Stubs member helps because we see all movies in IMAX because of the discount. read more

This is by far the best AMC theater I have been compared to my regular visits in the DMV area (back home) such as Gtown, Courthouse, Uptown, and Mazza Gallery. We went here because we missed the 11AM guided tour for Harry Truman's house, a very good decision since they have movie as early as 11:30. The theater was super clean! The seats are all new and leather. Love the fact the seats can be heated! They did not have AMC A List special priority line though, but since the theater is not crowded (at least when we were there), it's not a problem. Definitely recommend this theater! read more

They are VERY disrespectful. They wouldn't let my sisters in and I was already inside the building. They had VERY BAD attitudes when I was trying to explain the situation. The employees CANNOT handle stress and acted like they did not want to be at work. The officers DRAGGED my sisters out of the building. We payed OUR hard earned money on this movie. Skyler, the manager and Jonathan, the usher was VERY disrespectful, I feel they should be fired, or demoted in the least. AMC needs to train their employees to be respectful. After driving 30 mins and already purchasing our tickets online me and my party of 3 were kicked out of the AMC theater Independence because of the color of our skin. After multiple customers walked passed us getting help from the employee at the door we followed to find where the movie was. The movie began at 7:15 and we walked in at 7:21 we were stopped and CARDED because "We looked over 18 it was passed 6pm" * there was no message indicating that a ID card was necessary at this theater! * I am 20 years old and have been coming to this theater with at least one other person and have never been carded. We proceeded to show our ID's and one of the people with me had no physical ID but had photo copy and was over 18. And was refused by the male employee after another individual states "I'm 26" and was let right passed ! Soon after the female employee walks from behind the register to oversee what was occurring after seeing the eldest of us ID the male employee states "He's old enough for all of us, to proceed to the movie" the female employee didn't see the ID at all but states he's wrong and wouldn't allow any of us by, I asked for a refund. And stated this is "Bullshit I'm over 18" -speaking freely not to anyone at all. The female employee refuses me a refund. She tells me to leave and that I will have to go through cooperate to get my money back. I immediately told her that I need my money back before I go. *The whole time there's about 6 white male officers sitting on the couch watching the situation occur*. After I said what I said, she calls over the officers. She states that I need to leave. The officer explained this this is private property and that if she says that I need to leave then I have to go. I explained what occurred and how I had no intention to offend her that I was speaking freely. The rest of my party proceeded to get our money back because she refused service to me. After she tries to give me my money back the system has an "error" and wouldn't work. The officer waited behind us until we left. Now I'm trying to get the refund through corporate and they're unable to process it!! They have no direct line and hav to wait to get a response via Email. I am beyond lost for words on my Experience and will not be returning! Having the officers approach me in the aggressive manner was beyond and I have never dealt with that ! read more

Good place to catch a new film. Usually not crowded during the day. Evening are hit and miss.Weekends you should expect everyone there especially on movie openings. Plenty of parking. The interior lobby is clean and spacious with a few video games. Food options are plentiful..with that in mind be prepared to take a hit on your wallet. They have large screens,Dolby surround,etc. I've never had an issue with lack of seating. Employees are nice and offer to assist with any request that may arise. This is what a recently remodeled self-automated service theater in Independence looks like. The newly remodeled is the nicest thing here. Everything else is left to the public to do as they please. There are kiosks that don't work if you have a gift card, and no personal service whatsoever. My family did get the ticket guy to help us ring up our tickets and use a printed gift card that we had. After getting our tickets I noticed how the theater is in shambles. The condiment counter is filthy, as are the self serve drink counter. The bathrooms accumulate trash. It's a sad time when people need other people to clean up after them, but we live in times where people don't care. It may be the area and the clientele here, but I feel that it's a mixture of that and management who doesn't keep on top of order here. read more

I went to see Gravity Imax 3d here. I had no idea AMC had Imax capabilities. It cost a bit more than regular movies, but so worth it. They pass out plastic 3d glasses before the show...the nurse in me thought, "I hope they sanitize these things before the next person wears them." My seat was very comfortable. The issue I had was they showed commercials for TV shows I'd never watch, before the movie began. They were so loud. I'd not been to the theater for a while, but commercials for TV shows? How boring is that. Then they showed 3 unintersting trailers. Having spent $13 for a ticket, which I knew was astronomical, I didn't eat any snacks. The popcorn smelled good though. Now, about the Imax experience. At first they had projection problems, then we were told to put on our glasses. We were close enough to see without regular glasses on. The screen was huge. Once the movie started, the sound wasn't so ear drum crushing. The 3d experience really grabs you into the movie. When things fell into the sky, it looked as if they would hit you. I loved the movie and experience in 3d. It was unforgettable..but the preview part could significantly improve. read more

The only reason this isn't getting a one star is because of the movie I went to see - the movie was GREAT! Everything else was horrible! The parking was ok, but the price - horribly high, the wait in line - for the few people ahead of me - I should have been through that line in couple of minutes - and the whole elite people being able to jump in front of me - that wasn't a good idea - they should have their own line! Last night was the first time we had been to this theatre. I'm so glad this theatre is in my neighborhood. We loved it. They proved themselves to be both courteous and efficient. With yesterday being Valentine's Day you can imagine how crowded it was in there. Even getting into the parking lot was a chore! So my Husband dropped my daughter and I off at the entrance to get in line (If you're a parent you've been there). Every ticket window was open and there was still a long line that reached the front door. The amazing part? Only took 8 minutes to get through the line! The cashier was fast and friendly. I loved the comfort of the seating inside the theatre. There's plenty of elbow room and the seats slightly rock. During the movie I decided to go get some popcorn and a drink . Again, same as the ticket line... Friendly staff and they moved the line quickly. As with any movie theatre the cost of everything is ridiculously high. For a large refillable popcorn and soda it was $12.00. For 2 adult tickets and 1 child it was $28.00. In my opinion it was money well spent :) read more

Definitely not the most sophisticated nor the most comfortable theater I've ever patronized, but this location is my to-go theater in Kansas City based on their location. The line moves quickly and the bathrooms are always clean. I've never had an issue with the movie quality. Ticket prices are only $5 on the week days or if you go early on the weekends, and they are $10 during prime weekend times. I don't really like the seats; they're not the most comfortable. (I went to a theater in Indiana once that had memory foam cushions....) I can't speak much on the snack pricing because I always sneak food in my purse. Overall, they get the job done. read more

This is a very good theater. Much better than I expected considering the reviews. It's generic, but the facilities are clean and ample. All you can eat popcorn and drinks! If you buy the large. It's worth it. I saw The Hobbit on IMAX. It was beautiful. I think there are larger Imax theaters but for the $13 a piece, we had a great time. Your typical multiplex with a centrally located concession stand. The food selection is also typical overpriced items, which I usually stay away from. The outer theaters playing the non-first run movies have your typical smaller screens. On this occasion the cleaning crew wasn't very thorough, but who can blame them, really. There are 4 ticket kiosks in addition to the folks behind the glass who will gladly take your money. When things are busy, or even when they're not, personally, I'd rather use the kiosks. read more

Went into AMC tonight for our weekly Date Night. Got our tickets. Which cost an arm and a leg. Got our Soda and candy. Walk into Theater 14. When we stepped in it had an unclean smell. Thought nothing of it. Went all the way to the top row, middle to have a sit, till we looked down. We both noticed right away that the seats were NASTY! The only words I have is they looked like butt funk was alllll over them. My Husband and I thought we will just go to the next row. But to no surprise they were all discussing too. I didn't even feel comfortable putting my head back. We said forget it. Headed to customer service to get our money back. Let me just say. I will not step foot back in there until they remodel AMC Independence. Very upsetting, was really wanting to see Jumanji. We will just found another theater. Come on AMC. Well...look, I live near the AMC 30 in Olathe which, I believe, is a truly awesome theater. So perhaps I'm a little jaded...but this theater is simply just "fine". A-OK is really a perfect assessment of the AMC 20 in Independence. First, everyone I've come across here has been really quite friendly...so I have to give them that. Beyond that, the theater is just a bit worn down and kind of dreary. The concession area has a 80s feel to it...the theaters themselves seem to run a bit small, and they definitely feel it. Not to say it's claustrophobic, but it certainly is not the ideal movie watching experience. Everything is more or less clean, however, so I'll definitely give them that...they do the best they can at keeping outdated carpeting and walls clean. I'll stick to my Olathe location for sure, but this place is fine. read more

We waited 20 min to get in bc they said they were cleaning it but when we came in it looked like they had a party. There was popcorn all over the seats and floors. The floors were wet and sticky and so were some of the cup holders. The seats are dirty and disgusting. Time for new employees who clean and an upgrade on the seats. read more

I've been going to this AMC for a long time now. Yesterday was the first time I've had a lousy experience. Firstly, I had to wait in line to get popcorn and a drink for 10 mins with only one customer in front of us, while one employee was working the register and 4 others were standing around talking. Then we got to our seats 10 minutes early, then having seating issues with other people we moved seats 3 times. Throughout the whole movie a baby/toddler is screaming, I would assume from the loud sounds from the movie. During the baby screaming and crying everyone in the theater is obviously distracted looking around. Even the lady next to me (stranger) whispered to me asking if the lady was taking the baby out or what was going on. Overall it was a very stressful, unenjoyable experience. Paid $32 for 2 adult 2 kid tickets today Sunday 10/10/21 then paid $60 for a tub of popcorn 2 large drinks 2 kid boxes 3 candies and a nacho... the lady fills up the popcorn then another employee tells her they aren't supposed to fill them up anymore because people spill them and the lady then duos it out two inches below the side! I asked her why do you dump it out and they said because people spill and it looks bad (isn't that why since the don of time theatres have had someone sweeping up the halls?) I said the display has popcorn above the rim and I'd like it filled up please. They then called the manager who came out and said they fill it to the top of the tub and no more because people spill to which I said so is that full and she said again we fill it to the rim only and I said ok cool first you need to change the display to which she cut me off and said it shouldn't look like that and she doesn't know why they filled it so full for the display today and I said ok but is this full? 2 inches below the edge? And she grabbed it and very rudely filled it with another entire scoop and filled it to the top of the tub and said you need to be respectful and stormed away!? Terrible customer service and truly the "manager" was the worst by far! I will take my money elsewhere going forward because attitude like that comes must come from the top! Contacted support about the treatment from the staff. They told me to keep calling the number for a refund. Employees either wouldn't pick up the phone or hang up immediately. I understand the building is under construction but the fact the construction workers kept walking and dropping items on the floor that was over or heads ruined the movie. I'd give it four stars if going to the movies hadn't become so darned expensive. I know it's not this location's fault or anything, but I can't help but to be frustrated by the insane price gauging, since I distinctively remember a day when tickets used to be below $5 for a Friday night. The operation of the film was great. The employees all smiled and spoke. My issue was with the lack of consideration for the handicapped. My mother is in a wheelchair due to breaking her leg in a few places. She really wanted to see a movie this holiday season, so I said I would roll her in. There was no where in theater 11 for a wheel chair except at the bottom in front of the the screen. There is a handicap seat but there is a step to even get to that! Crazy! And the lips on all the doors make it very difficult to get a wheelchair over without being jarring. I know it's an older theater but, it could use some updates. read more

One of the older AMC built in KC and it shows. Reminded me of a $1 movie theater on a grand scale. I came here for a preview recently. Honestly when I have the grand Olathe AMC 29 at my back door, I can see myself coming all the way over here to this theater unless it was for free. Meh, I have experienced way better! AMC 20 is probably the most convenient option for me when watching a movie near home. I grew up with AMC 20, but I think I also grew out of AMC 20. It was super cool to hang out at the movie theatre in high school (middle school for some, not me because my parents were strict asian parents) and in my adolescent years, it may have been really cool to annoy the "old" (read: 25 and older) crowd but when the young become the old, like so much of us do, you get pretty tired of the unnecessary noise. An early showing or a much later showing is best to avoid unattended kids who will more than likely inappropriately laugh, make fart noises with his/her mouth or throw popcorn at other viewers. Complaining to the management will result in their own peers coming into the theatre to try to witness wrongdoings. Other than the lack of supervision/care of the staff to make movies enjoyable for all, the facility itself seems to be decently kept and the bathrooms are for the most part, clean. The theaters themselves can be pretty messy, lots of popcorn on the seats/ground. I'm not sure how often they clean out their theatre (I thought it was after every viewing?). Prices are standard, meaning overpriced. But get the AMC Stubs card and you can at least get a few bucks off your snacks. This place gets the job done, but there are a lot more affordable and/or more interesting places to watch movies around the area. read more

Sadly I do not recommend THIS amc theater anymore. A few months back bed bugs were reported in theater 20... amc claimed they treated the theater and had the seats steam cleaned... they claimed "nothing was found." I did not go there for several months. Recently I decided since nothing else has been reported to go back there because it is very close to me and I was tired of driving to other amc and going to Grain Valley theater to see movies. I went and saw Jurassic World last night and I felt like something was crawling on me. I looked and saw nothing... thinking I was being paranoid I let it go but when I walked out of the theater I felt a tickle on the side of my face and there was this tiny reddish brown bug! Unfortunately it was so small my camera didn't pick up the color of it. I have tried to compare it to SO many bugs but it looked most similar to a fed bed bug around stage two or three! I compared it to roaches... water bugs... carpet beetles... I cannot fine a match. It is scary and I just don't plan on coming back to this theater. Really sucks because I am an avid movie goer 2-3 times a week something and I just joined the "A-list" stubs membership. I'm super angry and disgusted. read more
