Pretty decent theater with decent service! I recently went to go see the Michael Jackson movie and it was terrific! Projection was easy to see and sound was clear and audible (although a bit loud for these sensitive ears). Auditoriums are well kept, and popcorn is yummy. They even have a little arcade! The only downside for me is that the prices are a little high for my taste, but honestly, I don't mind since the popcorn is good and I'm never really hungry anyway. All I need is a drink and I'm good to go. I'll be back tomorrow to see the new Mario galaxy movie! read more

We didn't get any food but if we had we probably would have been sick. The service was ok considering there's nothing but kids working/running the place. The ambiance is a typical movie theater setting but this place was dirty especially the bathrooms. The actual theater smelled so bad and was dirty. The bathrooms were so disgusting! Sitting on the toilet seat was scary wondering if the seat would slide off, very little tp and no soap. Def would not recommend. read more

We saw a movie while up in Hickory in 3D, the auditorium was fine and the theater looked clean. When the movie came on it was VERY blurry and it turned out the staff didn't use the correct 3D filter so we lost around 10 minutes at the start of the movie....I guess the good part (being sarcastic) is that there were 30 minutes of previews....! read more

Good theater overall! The experience was enjoyable, and everything was clean and well-kept. The only thing I'd really like to see is an upgrade to recliner chairs for more comfort. That would definitely take this theater to the next level! read more

Their last showings throughout the weekdays are around 7:30 pm. Needless to say when a theater shuts down that early, it is less than useless. I keep trying to root for AMC Hickory 15, but too many basics are off. Cleanliness is the #1 issue: I've walked into sticky floors, trash left from prior shows, and bathrooms that feel perpetually neglected--turnarounds often seem rushed or skipped. Seats are worn in regular rooms and even in Dolby; several squeak/wobble and look overdue for replacement. Spring brought social posts claiming bedbugs; I haven't seen any official finding to confirm that, but I have repeatedly seen flying insects/moths in the Dolby auditorium--either way, stronger pest prevention and visible cleaning would help. Presentation is hit-or-miss: when tuned, Dolby can look and sound great; other times the mix is harsh, and the 20+ minutes of ads/trailers before the feature drags. Concessions are another pain point: lines bunch up right before showtime, staffing feels thin, and self-serve machines are sometimes "out of" options. Worst of all, preordering doesn't save time here. My A-List concession preorders are almost never waiting at the pickup kiosk, so I end up in the same long line. And if I only need to scan a preordered ticket, there's usually no separate ticket scanner--so I'm stuck in that concession line just to get in. Reliability hasn't helped: I've had storm/tech outages cancel shows and trigger auto-refunds with little warning. For the price, the experience feels sub-premium. Verdict: 1/5 until they deep-clean daily (especially restrooms/floors), improve pest prevention, refurb seats, staff concessions for peak rush, add a separate ticket scanner, and communicate outages proactively. read more

This is a smaller AMC theater but the staff are ALL friendly. The concession stand is smaller but there's plenty of food and drinks to go around with modern equipment. Plus there's a game room for children. The theater is neat and cleaner than a lot of the other AMC theaters I've been to before. It's out of the way and I probably won't attend again but it was nice visiting. I appreciate their good customer service. read more

Don't tell a child a movie was canceled and then the couple behind him a ticket!!!! My 7 yr old really wanted to see this movie. He waited until that night, patiently, only to be told the 630 show was canceled. Then turn around and sell 2 tickets to a couple a few mins later. Totally disappointed! We ended up paying more money for a movie we didn't really want to see because we drove pretty far to get there and it was not good. We left before half way. How dare you break a child's heart at Xmas. If it was sold out, say so but don't say it was canceled then sell more tickets. Jerk. read more

This theatre has really gone down hill over the last few years. Firstly the drink machines usually don't work or half the soda in the machines are usually unavailable. This combined with the customer not being told before purchasing a drink is unacceptable. Next the men's bathroom are always extremely filthy and the smell of urine is extreme. These bathrooms cannot be on a regular cleaning schedule for the level of filth that is always present. Now for the main issue. After spending large amounts of money to support theatre's in general and to go enjoy a movie in a brick and mortar theatre for it to only be hot is wild. I thought this was a one off but the last 3 movies my family and I have seen at this location over the last few months the air conditioning has been basically non existent. Nothing fun about trying to enjoy a new movie while sweating and sticking to the recliner. With movie theatres already struggling this AMC location is a prime example of how to insure it over turns around again. read more

It's been so long since I've been to this theatre. The entrance and lobby still looks the same but the theaters are updated now, especially the IMAX one! The seats are new with plenty of leg space and the screen is huge! I also like the "pick your seat ahead of time" option when purchasing the ticket. read more

Visited on Sunday, July 23. You were out of ice, most drink choices (sucks to find this out after spending $7 for a drink because you were all out of bottled water) and movie theater 10, row P seat 16 and 17 is missing an arm rest; scraped my arm on the piece that once was the arm rest. I could feel the metal in the seat and back rest as there was absolutely no cushion or support. Just felt uncomfortable and filthy. Very disappointed in the lack of upkeep. read more

This is a standard cinema, reasonably nice seating and sightlines etc. However, since it was sold to AMC, they have decided to make patrons wait in line for concessions AND tickets in the same (long) line, meaning if you just want to see a movie you have to watch people ordering and being served their popcorn,etc. It's a pretty shameless way to milk a few more bucks out the line AND not pay anyone to sell tickets. Did you know that when AMC cancels a movie, they will not refund the convenience fee they force you to pay when you buy tickets online? Even if the only option to buy the tickets is online, they will not refund the convenience fee, so I was told by two "couldn't care less" employees. I purchased 7 tickets online. The movie was canceled because the theater ran out of 3D glasses. I showed up to watch the movie. I was not the one who didn't keep my promise. I paid almost $14.00 in "convenience fees" to purchase the tickets. And now I am just out that money? That is stealing. How "Inconvenient"!!! read more

We come here all the time. The nice Don't Theaters are comfortable but the aging theaters in the rest of the place are horrible. Half the seats are broken and like all theaters they are snagged too close together. The uncomfortable seats are the worst when they work well. Since most are broken it's worse. Was hoping this place would be a little better now with AMC taking over. Place was always a mess when Carmike was around around but doesn't look like the buyout changed anything. First off purchasing movie tickets in the concession line is a terrible idea. Can't believe it's still the process. I guess someone had the bright idea of eliminating the ticket box to save some labor cost maybe? Secondly this place is probably the dirtiest theater I've ever been to. Tops the Carolina or Terrace Theater when I was a kid! After our visit last night the drink machine was out of Coke, no napkins, and the men's room was out of paper towels. However...of the three Coke Freestyle machines they had, two of them were out of basic flavors. The floors throughout were gross and covered in stepped-on popcorn. 1st Trip as AMC - 45 minute wait to buy tickets on a Tuesday. Only three people working the counters selling tickets and concessions. The real delay is the premium member line. It has a ton of people in it so the 75 people in our line are stuck waiting 45 minute to pickup our fandango tickets. Just one more reason to wait for the dollar movies at the Carolina Theater in downtown Hickory. Or just make the drive to Newton for the State Cinema. 2nd time - We came back... My son got free tickets to the opening weekend of Star Wars - The Last Jedi from the Boy Scouts. They took a while grip from the council. I was surprised but the "Souvenir" tickets claimed that the scouts would be able to see the movie in the "Big D" theater. When we got there no one at the theater head any idea what was happening, and they had already let people buy tickets and the Big D theater was not available. It took them so long to figure things out our 6pm movie didn't even start until after 7pm. read more

The only reason why I came here is because my in-laws live in Hickory. This place is a disaster when it's busy. Reasons why: 1. Mess - it's freaking filthy and I'm guessing it's because they're short staffed. There's popcorn all over the floor. The only area that's clean is the game room and I'm thinking it's because who dumps quarters into an arcade when there are free games on cellphones. 2. Long lines - they sell tickets at the concession stand. So...if you're wanting to just buy tickets, you're going to have to wait as the family of four in front of the register argue which movie to watch and what food items they're going to share. 3. No automated kiosk where you can purchase tickets and bypass the lines. Then again, this isn't Silicon Valley so the lack of technology doesn't surprise me. The only reason why I gave this place 2 stars is because you don't have to stand outside where it's 30 degrees. The concept of being a great movie theater is there....just poorly executed. read more

Because I just came from Studio Movie Grill in Charlotte, it reminded me of my less than stellar experience at Carmike 14 last week. First off, they are in the middle of construction, so you can hear the outside construction in the parking lot while inside the theater. Distracting much? It also stinks very badly in there. Literally. The sour stench is horrendous. I honestly think they should plug in a few Febreeze air fresheners throughout the entire building. They do have an arcade, but it's nothing deluxe or special. The service is just... alright. The theater isn't visually appealing because it is torn apart, dirty, and raggedy. Plus, as I mentioned before, very smelly. This, I assume, is why they are remodeling. I really hope that the renovations of this theater change the whole movie-going experience. This is the only theater in Hickory, so it needs to be appealing both visually and customer service wise. They can definitely do a lot better and should be held to a higher standard. read more

Carmike 14 leaves a lot to be desired. They cannot handle big movie premiers. Each time we've gone to a premier of Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings they don't even think to properly queue their patrons so that everyone has a fair chance of getting a decent seat based on a first come first serve basis. Last night at The Hunger Games premier there were people waiting in line for a 7pm showing at 8pm, missing half the movie because there was no proper sign displayed for who should be lining up when. It was complete chaos, as none of the workers knew what movies were finished and were sending people into movies that weren't even done playing. To top off the less than desirable queuing, the theaters that they were screening The Hunger Games in where dangerously hot. You could see the steam and sweat rising in the air. Despite us, and several other patrons, telling management of this problem well before the movie started (in fact, they sent us into an already playing movie so we told them of this problem while OTHER people were watching the film given them at least an hour's notice to fix this situation) they did nothing. In fact, they sent one of the theater cleaners in to say "this is as cool as its going to get, folks". As in, stop complaining. They didn't even offer rain checks at this point. People from various showings left the theater with sweat stains looking dizzy and disoriented. With sold out shows, that many people cram packed into a room that was already overly hot turned the screening into a literal sauna. This isn't the first time they've had this problem either. Hickory Carmike is basically your only option in Hickory when it comes to seeing newly released films, and they know this. The lack of competition obviously has effected their customer service. read more

Do not try to purchase tickets through Fandango. they charge a processing fee unbeknownst to you until after our payment is made. Also..when you go to print tickets..they tell you to pick them up at office. So I paid almost $3.00 to stand in line to get my tickets. They say they have a refund policy but you can't contact them. I was definitely RIPPED OFF. Movie theatre is good. If you want to buy a beer or wine..make sure you have ID...even if you are 67 as I am..they still need to card you...what a joke!! read more

Stupidest concept of a theater I've ever seen. This was our first and last time here. You have to wait in ONE long line for tickets and food/drinks. If you order tickets online you can go straight to the movie BUT have to wait in the ONE long line for snacks. During the movie if you need refills or snacks you have to go back to the said ONE long line where people are waiting for tickets and food. They should have separate lines like most common sense theaters. One for tickets one for food. Will never come back to this place just because of that. read more

Everytime I go to this movie theater there is a terribly long wait! Even though the theater lobby has TWO sides for concessions/ticket purchases, they always only have one side open and it results in there being a line wrapped around 4 times in the lobby. This theater needs a more efficient system for getting people their tickets and concessions so they can get into their movie on time. Also this theater needs to fix their projectors-- more often than not the picture quality on the screen is fuzzy and not great. read more

First time using the Big D theater and it was very nice. This theater has recently been remodeled and looks much better than it used to. We purchased tickets online at Fandango.com and had no problems getting our printed tickets from the registers at the concession area. However, in my personal opinion, I liked the former method of purchasing tickets from the ticket booth before you enter. I am not sure what the reasoning was for the change, but the lines are SUPER long! Since there are various start times for the 15 different theaters, the line never goes away. This process makes it difficult to get refills if you are already in the theater or in the middle of a movie. We actually went to see the latest version of Stephen King's "IT" on the opening day and only one side of the concession area was open. The theater was very crowded and the lines were very long. I was very disappointed in the concessions. Two regular size bags of popcorn and 2 regular size drinks totaled $29 and some change!!! I couldn't believe my ears when I heard the total!! One bag was stale and 1/3 had unpopped kernels while the other was decent. The annual refillable bucket is my usual purchase, but this year we haven't frequented this theater. Since it's so late in the year, it seems pointless to purchase it now, so we just purchased bags. Food was not good and there was NO ICE in the multi-flavored soft drink machines. Very disappointed in the quality of concessions at this price!! We enjoyed the movie theaters, sound, cleanliness, and various locations of restrooms (which were clean and well stocked) were all good. I have been to this theater many times and have never had bad concessions, but for the money I would expect nothing short of perfect. Very disappointed in this portion of my visit. read more
