Mid Century elegance in the middle of nowhere.
    Keo N.

This is a far flung corner of nowhere, where crows will not even fly there to die. Being in the desert the light is spectacularly clear, leading to sharp lines and shadows for this little mid century modern haven. The restaurant and motel are no longer operating, so don"t count on staying or having a sit downeal. There is a small convenience store at the gas station. Certainly worth a stop by to see this cultural oddity which at one point was doing ok, but now it is barely hanging on. This should on the national register of mid century modern roadside stop bys.

There is something so cool about the desert. I love these historic locations and these out in the boondocks dying towns that are surviving. I wish the owner would restore those little motel rooms. We visited nearby Amboy crater and would've of loved to see all the stars at night while hanging out at this location.

I gueeeeesss!!! Gas is REALLY expensive. Also, it's full service. There's nothing there really just mostly the nostalgia of the old hotel and that one little gas station/store/restaurant/rest stop. The attendant said they always film things there. There was a bus full of Norwegian tourists some bikers and cyclists...and us. Because we missed the road towards Laughlin. I'm glad we stopped by but I wouldn't ever go on purpose. Still...you should see it at least once!

Kelso Depot - Outside the depot

I don't know why I have never been through here in my entire life, but it was neat to see the landscape and feeling like I was playing Frogger as I was trying to avoid all the potholes in the 2 lane road. One random stop we came across in the middle of the preserve was the Kelso Depot. I only stopped because I saw that there was a restroom that we could use, and then was surprised to see an actual visitor center to peruse. From the signage out front here's the history: "Built in 1924, the Kelso Depot housed a train station, ticket and telegraph office, restaurant, reading room, and dormitory rooms for railroad employees. It was often called the Kelso Club House, a Union Pacific Railroad term for employee boarding and recreational facilities. As railroad technology improved and fewer personnel were needed, the Depot became obsolete. It was closed in 1985, and Union Pacific planned to raze the building. Concerned citizens intervened and the building was saved. It was renovated and reopened as a National Park Service Visitor Center in October 2005." The Depot is currently under construction as of 12/2025, but you can walk around the building and peek in through the windows. Apparently the area around the depot was like a little village during WW II. It's neat to imagine what life would've been like living out here in the middle of nowhere back in the 1940's. There's no internet out in Kelso, but you can log into the NPS Wi-Fi while you're there.

We took a Waze suggestion which ended up saving us two hours. Happened upon the Kelso Depot just at the right time. We're so grateful to these guys keeping their bathrooms open even when the visitor center is closed.

People go to the post office to get their mail, not get lectured…read more Yesterday I went in because my package was ready for pickup, a very nice man told me he's sorry my package isn't truly ready and to come back tomorrow. So I went back in today right after they opened and I dealt with the most annoying mail-woman i've ever met, instead of being helpful and instantly grabbing my package, she requests a slip that was dropped in my mailbox to see, I instantly told her I threw it away, first reason being because the man I showed my phone to that said "ready for pickup" yesterday never told me to bring my slip, and I only got the slip after I went in the first time so I had thrown it away not knowing it matters. Anyway, she told me a ton of times that they need the slip even after I told her the first office worker never told me that. He never asked for a slip, he instantly checked to see if my package was ready. All she did was question me about a damn piece of paper. KEEP IN MIND this package was supposed to be delivered on the 26th, it's the 31st now and the USPS had MIS-shipped my package to palm desert the day it was supposed to be here . I paid for priority shipping. Anyway, I had gotten the package from her without the slip so obviously it wasn't a dire thing to have and she just wanted to be argumentative. Come on It's a piece of paper, now give me my mail. This post office has been such a hassle.

And also lots of parking! It is a small space inside if you need a specific service. But it was comfortable enough for me to write my card on the side counter.
