Great experience on Main Street in Ambler. Ambler Theater is a very relaxed experience with a hand full of staff that makes you feel welcome. The movie theater is very old however it brings with it wonderful charm. My girlfriend and I have been coming here for just about a year now and are thinking of becoming members (this is a non-profit movie theater that exists by the support of its members). This spot reminds me of the Ritz movie theaters in center city without the hustle bustle. Definitely check it out for a date night or a reason to check out the quiant town of Ambler. The church I attended as a kid at maybe 11-13 years old would load up the church van and take us to see Christian films when it used to be the Ambler Christian Cinema . We just had our twins awesome 14th birthday part at the Ambler Theater, and it was a an amazing experience. We were able to bring in our own DVD, and our twins favorite movie was played on the big screen. The staff were all very considerate and helpful in answering our questions which helped us organize our party. All emails were answered that very day! During our party, the theater was closed to the public, which made it a safe place for parents to drop off and pick up their children. There is free parking in Ambler on the weekends, so it was easy for the parents to find parking on the day of our party. Popcorn and drinks from the Concession Stand were discounted if we preordered them. There were two tables placed in the auditorium for cupcakes and other food. Each seat had a cup holder. The theater is very clean and the seats are very comfortable. It is the perfect place to have a birthday party for teens! We will likely have our next party at the Ambler Theater! read more

This place is so darn cute, youse guys. Located in Downtown Ambler, this theater is right near some of the posh pubs (and not-so-posh pubs) in the area. There are not a ton of options (there are only three theaters here,) but the video and audio quality are great and the times and lines have normally been consumer-friendly. There's a noted community feel to the establishment, which you gotta love! The owner here obviously took time to find to give this place a nice, vintage look. There's some awesome Ambler mementoes here too; my mom almost found my grandfather's 1931 Ambler High School football team portrait. There are some awesome indie films and festivals here, too. Remember that this place runs from support from Ambler's denizens and the surrounding area. Go check it out! read more

I absolutely adored my visit to the Ambler Theater today. They took the time to find a way to make everything seem frozen in time in a good way. Everyone working there was so nice, it was a reminder of a bygone era. Everything looked like it was renovated, but specifically preserved or re-done to mimic a classic theater style from decades (or even a century+) ago. Fresh paint, restored marble, a little Art Deco, and tons of old time movie posters. The lobby leading up to the ticket window was so long. I like thinking the walk through it was the steps needed to step backwards through time. I'm very happy to see places like this still running. I implore anyone reading this: please go, support this place. You'll have a wonderful time, and you'll help keep old traditions like this place alive. read more

The Ambler Theater is located at 108 E. Butler Ave in Ambler, PA and is a nonprofit, community-based movie theater that specializes in independent, art, and foreign films. I had personally never heard of the Ambler Theater before I first visited in November 2016, as I am not in Ambler very much at all (I visited Ambler a few times at the Temple Ambler campus in the past but that's it). The reason why I ended up at the Ambler Theater was because of a 5 Day Film Festival that Montgomery County Community College hosted and I participated in, and the screening/awards ceremony was held at The Ambler Theater. On my first visit I was very impressed with the theater, it's very flashy on the outside and it gets your attention and then on the inside it has a decent sized hall to get to the box office then it has a small lobby with the bathrooms and consessions stand. I haven't been in the other theaters just the main, larger theater in the back which has plenty of seating, a stage, and just all around looks awesome with it's design! I only came to the theater 3 times between 2016-2018 for the film fests screenings, but it was a fun and enjoyable experience each time and one day I wish to return to the Ambler Theater for a standard movie I think it'll be a fun trip! read more

The Ambler Theater is a refreshing reminder of what a movie going experience should be. As a non-profit organization the ticket prices are reasonable, and even better if you become a member (which is a tax write-off). It is located on the main strip in Ambler within walking distance to many fine dining establishments and shops. The concession stand is nicely priced (much like the movie ticket prices) and doesn't make going to the movies something that requires financial planning. The theaters themselves have good picture and sound (my favorite being the theater on the left), but i would suggest sitting high up in the "main" theater because the screen is angled for those seats. Another really nice feature are the films from the past that are shown. I really enjoyed seeing Indiana Jones, Ghost Busters, Jaws, A Clock Work Orange on the BIG SCREEN, and look forward to their summer series this year with Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, and more. read more

The Ambler Theater reminds me of the Cinema Arts Centre and the Northport theater I frequented in high school and college back on Long Island. Cinema Arts Centre is a modern building with small theaters. The Northport theater is an old-school cinema that showed hit movies six months or so after their release. I think it shows theatrical plays today. Ambler Theater combines both a grand large classic theater and two smaller theaters. When I go, I pull for my show to be in the main theater but its really OK if it isn't. What a majestic place to view cinema! A Ritz for the suburbs but with historic architecture mixed in. I live in Glenside with my lovely wife. One of the best local date nights we can do is one of Ambler's wonderful restaurants followed by a movie at the theater. They often have one-time screenings of classics, especially in the summer. I've seen Strangers on a Train and Goodfellas there. I am looking forward to The Great Dictator and Pulp Fiction later this summer. It also warrants mentioning that they have great business practices. Last night, I ordered a small Coke Zero. It cost $2 and was actually small. So you can snack here without feeling ripped off and wasteful. They sell some great candy bars including Ritter Sport and Lindt Milk Chocolate. The Ambler Theater is a true asset to Ambler and anywhere else in reasonable driving distance. read more

I agree with the other comments on the choices of movies and the reasonable prices - the latter probably because they are non-profit, in order to get the funding that started the rehab project. They have been having community events there this year which is nice. Had a viewing of Obama's inauguration that raised money for the local food bank, and Sunday they had a night at the Oscars, complete with a huge ice sculpture of an Oscar, backlit with a yellow light, on the street out front. This theater is really nice and very clean. The staff is also super friendly and rather passionate about their jobs! We went the other day to see Rosemarys baby, which was great! The movie was in film so it made the experience all the better. It was listed as a "Film 101" night. They had a an introduction by a professor (?). It wasn't organized very well because she spoke before the movie but then there was no mention of her speaking after the movie. So the majority of the theater left as they were setting up for her to speak. The details about this particular discussion/filming were unclear on the website and since I had just come to see the movie I only stayed for the movie. I also wasn't particularly interested in her political opinions that she had shared pre movie screening. It was nice to hear about the movie and facts about the film but that is where it should have stopped especially since most of us just came to see a horror flick. However, event aside, the place is really nice. I definitely will be back. There are three theaters and one concession stand which sells popcorn, candy and sodas. They check tickets which is funny to me at a theater so small. I liked the overall ambiance of this theater rather than a large chain theater and like when they do events and special features. There is parking available on the street but the best bet is the lot next to the church which is for church members as well as the public. Church spots are designated, everything else is fair game. read more

This is like the old theater featured in Jim Carey's "The Majestic", except without Jim Carey. Cozy and comfortable, I was able to catch "Birdman" featuring the equally disturbed and erratic Michael Keaton trying to recapture his glory days as an ex-superhero, much like Carey trying to recapture his former days as an actor. No wait... Only two complaints. First, parking can be really tough in downtown Ambler. I was parked blocks away and the moment I approached my car the oncoming motorist just about caused an accident attempting to get my spot. Several weird and uncomfortable hand gestures and mouthing of words later, I was able to convey that he could have my spot, if he would just give me the courtesy of letting me exit it first. The other thing was the absolute tidal wave of blue hairs at the 4pm matinee I attended. I got there a comfortable 15 minutes early, walked into the theater and...almost nowhere to sit. In fact, I was at least 30 years younger than anybody else in there. Now, I applaud the fact that these folks want to catch a movie in their golden years, perhaps having attended this same theater in their youth. Ahh, nostalgia. But please...Birdman? With every third word being the F-bomb, Michael Keaton playing a schizo (think Beetlejuice meets Captain America), and Ed Norton playing a character whose only reality is on stage, in a script rife with imagery and metaphor, couldn't these folks have just caught something a little less edgy and compelling? We are so lucky to have this fabulous theater nearby. This early 20th century landmark was in shambles until a non profit got a hold of it a few years back, and saved its ass from ruin. Now Movie Affectionatos from all over come to see wonderful independent films in the beautiful theater that plays them. Starting at about $100 for the year- you can purchase memberships with all sorts of perks (mostly free movies), or you can just pay the small price of the ticket to see a single show. The new Digital Cinema is working just fine. Being a non-profit organization, The Ambler Theater had a campaign to raise $300k for 3 new digital projectors and related equipment. They beat their goal by 25%. You can sooooooo notice the difference in the flicks. I don't want to go anywhere else to see a movie. I'm entirely spoiled by Ambler Theater. If you're a member here, movies are only five bucks. The concession stand is very reasonably priced. Movie reviews are printed out and available in the lobby so you can take one to read and discuss post-movie. Most important to me are the theater seats. There is a good amount of leg room, the seats are gigantic and very comfortable, and there isn't a bad one in the house. I've never been in a theater with a screaming baby or a talking patron. That just wouldn't be cool in Ambler. read more

I really disliked going to the movies - large crowds, groups of loitering teens, crabby/surly employees, sticky floors, unclean bathrooms - especially if it involved going to a Regal "megaplex". I usually prefer to pop my Netflix choice into my large-screen computer and settle down with some knitting in the comfort of my own home. However, after purchasing a membership for my movie-loving mother, The Ambler Theater has quickly brought me out of my little movie-viewing cave and back to the big screen. They tend to always show flicks that I am inclined to see and have special events throughout the year showing old flicks like Casablanca or silent films with accompanying live music. As a member (starting at about $40/year), you can't beat the sneak previews of new movies and $5 price tag for tickets. Membership also grants you $5 admission to the Hiway and County Theaters. The bonus at Ambler is that they have more than one screen giving you a greater chance that they are showing something you'll want to see. They typically run 3 films at a time - often something in the art-house/indie genre and then some more mainstream options. I like that they have little indulgences like Ritter chocolate bars at the concession stand in addition to the old standards like Junior Mints. The old-world detailing and photos of the theater's historical journey make your night out at the movies feel like a classy event. They also always supply summaries/reviews of each movie they are showing which I like to read after the show just in case I missed something (very helpful with flicks like 'Her' or 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' where you want to get another perspective). There are plenty of options for grabbing a drink and a bite before or after the show and Ambler provides that "small town" feel that is very much lacking in most of suburban America. read more

Made a trip to the Ambler Theater over the holidays to see Up in the Air. Again we went for the early matinées on Wednesday. We got two tickets ($4.75/ticket!!!!), a medium popcorn, an iced tea, and a bag of Ashers chocolate covered pretzels all for $18! The theater is clean and the staff is MUCH more pleasant than the typically disgruntled staff at chain theaters. If you live within a 30 min. radius of Ambler you should definitely make a point to make it out to the Ambler Theater. PS: Bathrooms are also squeaky clean. read more

One thing I love about this theater is its always very clean. The prices are always lower than the bigger competitors and the concessions are way cheaper. The old school ticket line moved fast and the gentleman who helped me was really nice as were the employees at concessions. The concessions were even a great deal. I live in Center City, but regularly go to the Ambler Theater to see movies. It is a pure pleasure - the seating is stadium with lots of leg room and the price is perfect. You can even become a member of the theater for 40 bucks a year that gets you discount tickets. They usually screen art, foreign and indy films that you can see at the Ritz, but would MUCH rather see at Ambler. Plus there is a great italian BYO right next door... oh and right next door to the BYO? A Liquor store. You can't get a much better evening than this. read more

Popcorn is fresh and is the best I've had from a Philadelphia area movie theater. They do not overcharge for movie treats ... and the three of us can see a first run film for just about what you pay for one adult ticket in NYC! Do yourself a favor and join the Ambler. I LOVE this theater. It was built in 1928, and brought back to its former glory in the early 2000s. It shows indie movies, classics, and more! (I've seen The Downton Abbey Movie, Silence of the Lambs, an actual 35 mm print of All About Eve, and the 1920 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde silent film with live accompaniment by Not So Silent Cinema here. The variety is unbeatable.) The concession stand is also amazing, with everything from popcorn to european chocolate bars, coffee, and STASH tea. Nice independent theater in a small-town environment. They show lots of movies that won't have enough of a following or don't have the marketing budget to make it at a Regal or AMC, though some of the stuff moves beyond artsy into the realm of downright pretentious/bizarre. Whatever floats your boat. The theater is good for the community and has helped revitalize the town. It definitely helps Ambler's nightlife spots and restaurants attract customers. Although it wasn't enough to save the Shanachie... Get there early on a weekend--it fills up! Concessions are reasonably-priced, too, which is a nice touch. Saves me stopping at a Wawa and stuffing my pockets, which I often do on the way to a chain theater to avoid paying $4 for a box of Milk Duds. I'm a member here, which pays for itself if you attend with any frequency. Also, the membership fee is tax-deductible, in case that sways you. Perhaps best of all, they host Little Lebowskifest every summer, which is a great event for all fans of the Dude. For something like $15 (nonmember) you get a ticket, t-shirt and a White Russian. There's trivia with prizes and a costume contest. This year's winner was a girl in a very impressive severed toe costume, complete with green nail polish and bloody gauze. Amazing! Do yourself a favor and go check out a film at the Ambler Theater. Honestly, pick anything they are playing - it is sure to be interesting! The space is lovely and comfortable, one of the theaters has been recently renovated. Prices are much more affordable than those mega-plex cinemas, great snacks and friendly, approachable staff. Do consider buying your ticket ahead of time (maybe before a dinner out in the neighborhood) or show up a bit early if you want to see a popular film on a weekend night, as shows do sometimes sell out. The one person who gave the Ambler Theater a 4 star rating instead of 5 wrote about how they took away the dark chocolate Toblerone and have an inconsistent tea selection. What they fail to mention is that THE AMBLER THEATER REVIVED MY COMMUNITY AND THERE IS NOW CULTURE IN AN OTHERWISE FAILED INDUSTRIAL TOWN. Seriously, prior to the Ambler Theater NOT BEING A MASSIVE ABANDONED BUILDING ON A STREET OF ABANDONED BUILDINGS, there was only a children's shoe store and chandelier store on Butler Pike. Now, I know of 4 places in the vicinity of Butler Pike alone where I can get cold desserts, two of them specializing in authentic gelato, one of them better than some of the gelato I had in Rome. Oh yeah, since the Ambler Theater also opened there is also an Ambler Orchestra and a playhouse, as well as nearly a dozen restaurants along Butler Pike. So it's a pretty big deal for us locals. As for the theater itself, it's great. It gets most of the big indie movies (and sometimes mainstream ones like the Sex and the City movies) generally on their opening weekends. Also, the theater is well-maintained and its restoration is amazing, just walking in it really does feel like how I imagine going to the movies was in the 1930s when it was built: an event. I would suggest membership to anyone who plans to go to the Ambler Theater more than once a month, or who just wants to donate to a good cause. Not only are movie tickets $4.50, but you're actually helping revive a local economy as well. read more

I looooove the Ambler Theater! Easily my favorite in the area. This place was a rundown shell for what seemed like forever, but once it was rehabbed and redone it instantly became my home away from home. The films are more of the art house variety, which is good. WhizBang 3 is already playing at 4 different theaters, so you don't need it here. The staff is very friendly, and the prices are reasonable (hint...if you are likely to come here several times of the course of a year, go ahead and get the basic membership. Its $45 and will pay for itself eventually, plus its tax deductible). Another bonus is that with the films shown you don't get the dregs of society at every show...far, far less likely to have cellphones going off every 10 seconds. People are there because they want to watch the film, not goof around. Parking is easy at the lot a block away, and there are plenty of eating/drinking options right on the same street. I love this place. I recently moved to Blue Bell and this theater is like 7 minutes from were I live. I am a BIG film freak and I've never been to a theater like this. It's like remembering why movie theaters were opened in the first place; this is no "go-check-that-dumass-hollywood-movie" to that "shitty-expensive-money-sucker-typical-cinema". They screen foreign/artsy/independent movies you wouldn't usually be able to see somewhere else. It's in process of being remodeled but it's already looking really great, very old style looking (but not falling to pieces); it's clean and comfortable because it's rarely crowded. Not a lot of young people go there, because they don't really appreciate the good stuff, and I like to believe there's something positive about that, grown ups are not likely to be loud during a movie, and surprisingly they have a great sense of humor. The staff is really nice, and although there's no parking outside, there's a couple of parking lots about a block away. The only bad thing is that they usually just screen around 3-4 movies at a time, and that stresses me out because I would go there every day if I could. read more

The concession stand is actually affordable and the building is adorable. It has a lot of charm. It's a nice break from the big chain theaters and will sometimes have movies that they aren't running. This theater rocks! It's beautiful and it always has the best art house films. There are usually at least two movies here that I am dying to see.
