A friend and I were drawn to Ambar specifically because of the 4.5 stars. Big mistake! We were really disappointed by how tasteless and inauthentic our food was. That not a single waiter some spanish should have been a forewarning. The menu options here are quite limited as many of the staples of traditional Mexican cuisine are missing. Tortilla chips and spicy tomato salsa, which are customarily served gratis and without having to ask in good mexican restaurants as part of the dining experience were missing, so we decided to order them. Amazingly, no tomato salsa came with the chips, so then we had to order that too. What we got instead of the customary salsa were three very tiny bowls with sour cream, bland tomato "salsa," and what tried to pass itself off as "guacamole." My friend ordered the gambas (large shrimps). They were disappointingly small and unshelled. The overcooked shrimp meat was drowned in oil and was nearly impossible to remove from the shells (because of overcooking, I suppose). He was forced to use his fingers and that was a messy, time-consuming process. Even then, he kept getting bits of shell in his mouth. We politely asked the waiter why the shells were not removed and his reply---I KID YOU NOT!...was that the cook "doesn't have time to remove shells." I ordered a vegetarian burrito, which in this case was basically just a bunch of bland, cooked vegetables wrapped in a wheat tortilla. Usually tortillas that are described as "vegetarian" have copious amounts of cheese added; this one did not. I suggest such tortillas be called VEGAN, not vegetarian, since the restaurant does not follow the norm. At this point, we we're really annoyed and still quite hungry. Truly, the final straw was when were were informed that the restaurant serves no desserts of any kind...NO DESSERTS! The small consolation we got from this unfortunate place was that the staff were courteous. Even taking into account that we live in Germany, this was truly the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever experienced. I don't know how it can survive unless management improves the menu and hires an authentic, competent Mexican cook. read more
