Wise-Cracks Windshield Repair

Wise-Cracks Windshield Repair

BACKSTORY: So, one fine day driving back from work, I get a…read morerock hit my windshield out of nowhere. It was about half the size of a pea - most people wouldn't notice it but I'm just super particular about keeping my car in good shape (so much so that I only hand wash it myself, park the furthest away at the last spot to avoid dings, don't park on the street, only garage parking etc.) This really hurt me and I was considering getting my entire windshield replaced. Since I was new to the topic, I started researching online, I realized that while some had had some good experiences having it repaired - most had horror stories of the crack growing, discoloration or just looking worse that when it began. This put me in a dilemma and then I read bimmerforums on people having trouble having their windshields replaced and most considered keeping the original manufacturer seals and windshield in place if it can be fixed. After an almost sleepless night and spending the next first half of the work day researching, I decided to have it fixed. I called BMW of Fairfax to ask if they did windshield repairs where I get told that they don't but they outsource it to Windshield City. I call Windshield City and I'm told they only do replacements and gave me the number of a guy who could help me. In comes Mike. I lay out the details and tell him exactly what my expectations are. He explains the entire process calmly and tells me the hard truth - he can make it look very good but the only way for it to disappear would be to replace the glass. 10 mins on the phone with him and I'm wondering - the guy talks smooth but is he good? I'm still skeptical but he ends the call saying "I don't know what you decide but until you make up your mind just cover the crack with scotch tape - it will really help anyone fixing the windshield whether it's me or someone else and give you great results.". I'm still hesitant but I ask him "How about tomorrow?". He declines - "It'll be raining and I'll mess up your windshield if I work on it then." - I'm sold! How about tonight?, I ask. It was around 7PM then and most people would decline even talking to me. Mike instead says he is out and doesn't have his tools with him or else he would've and offers to call up a few people in my area who could help me out!! Since no one was available, I just nervously put the tape and hoped it wouldn't rain the next day - asking Mike to call me back! ABOUT THE JOB: He calls me the next day as promised and I asked him to come by my work to do the repair. I'm still worried and there he is setting up the apparatus neatly next to my car and ensuring he puts a leather cover on my car hood so as to not scratch the paint and I still ask him the same questions I asked him the previous day - will it be ok? He explains the entire process assures me i will be fine but keeps a check on my hopes and lets me know it won't completely disappear. 30-40 mins later... I'm amazed - the crack is virtually gone except for a small white pin point where the rock crushed the glass and if you look really really close at a particular angle - can can see the hairline of a part of the crack. What a great job!! I'm elated!! I couldn't recommend him enough to anyone I know. Truly a professional. Heck I made this Yelp page so that he can get discovered more easily in the Northern Virginia area! His job was way way better than what I had expected the job to be like. For 99.9% of the people, the scratch wouldn't even be visible. I can't recommend him enough! PRICING: If that wasn't enough, here's the icing on the cake. He had initially quoted me $70 but on the day of the job gave me a $10 discount since he was anyway in the area when he worked on my car (BTW he offered to do it for $40 if I drove over to Sterling/Dulles where he's located.) but I liked the job so much I tipped him $20 more.... And HE RETURNS IT!!!! Saying it was too much and gives me his branded "mug" as keepsake!!! To add more perspective on the price Safelite quoted me $129.99. Really, I would've felt it worth my money had Mike charged me that. Highly recommended. Oh and if you go over and look at Windshield City's reviews they have a 5 star rating and each and every one of them mention Mike on it: http://www.yelp.com/biz/windshield-city-chantilly

I called in the morning to ask about a review of the crack and cost. Mike answered my questions…read moreand was at my house by noon. Due to the size of the crack and heat, he stated that he would need to come later in the day when the sun was setting and not so hot to complete the repair successfully. He was at my house that night at 8PM to complete the repair. He did a fantastic job and you cannot tell the crack was ever there. Thanks Mike!
