Since Petstock opened in Vermont South, they've saved me a small fortune - as much as 25% on some items, and that's not on sale either. And thanks to them, Neil gets a steady stream of feeder fish instead of (or sometimes in addition to) those horrible frozen fish pellets. Neil likes the fish so much that he's adopted two of them, and one of those is now nearly big enough to need his own tank. If you're a breeder of domestic pets (my wife and I used to breed Bengals), they stock super large bags (like 15-25kg) of cat and dog food, and if they don't have it, they're happy to order it in. (Public holidays they are open from 10-4). One store is dedicated to all things fish, birds and reptiles - including the live animals themselves. Prices here are really good and the animals are well looked after. The fish tanks are clean and the staff are really good at chasing down the exact specimen you want for your new pet. The second store is for kittens, puppies, small animals and grooming needs. They provide a grooming service here but I have never utilized that. While meandering around their pet toys you can hear the sound of puppies playing and kittens purring - nothing like the kind of pet store where the animals are asleep in tiny boxes. The staff are happy to let you have a hold or a play with the animals. In terms of pet accessories these guys have everything. Albeit groovy dog collars, piles of pet food, mirrors for your birdcage or all manner of fish tanks - you are bound to find it here. They even have a Do It Yourself coin operated dog wash in their store which is always a lot of splashy fun - depending on how well behaved your dog is. Lucky for owners of escape artists it has a reasonably tall gate that prevents your dog from jumping out. I recommend keeping the lead on just in case. I've used the dog bath at the back of the store a few times and it's really handy. The store has an excellent selection of dry foods and refrigerated meats plus loads of dog treats. I don't really go to the other part of the store with the birds and fish. I like that they now have pet adoption, which I think they have had for a while but I only noticed a few months ago.

The woman almost always suggests that one of the dogs be fully shaved as the fur is too matted to cut. They always advise accidental snips and cuts may occur, but this has never happened to my pooches before. The price is around $60 for a small/medium sized dog to be fully shaved and groomed (nails & face). The rest of the store is well structured and organized, making products very easy to find. They have an adoption center for cats and dogs, as well as fishes, hermit crabs, rabbits and guinea pigs. It is located outside of Chadstone Shopping Center.

This shop specialises in reptiles, birds and aquariums. You want a bird-eating spider? Amazing Amazon is the first place you go. Got a fussy turtle? This shop will sort you out. Want a pet python to freak out your parents when they turn up and want to stay for a week? Check this place out. The service is really good. The guys that I have spoken to there really know about the stuff they sell. I've spent literally hours in there, watching the fish, turtles and stingrays moving around the enormous tanks they have in the showroom. Seriously, you will want to build a giant aquarium in your house after one visit. The products that they sell are priced pretty much what they are elsewhere, but the aquariums seem to be quite reasonable. I stop and have a look every time I can.

The infamous Kong toys have a big section on the wall and there are great ones suited to dogs of all sizes and temperaments. My dog tends to rip through most of his toys in minutes but he has never beaten a Kong toy. Granted they are massive and made from thick rubber, but it is still impressive. They do cost more than the average toy however and you'll be looking at around $15-$30 for one. The girl behind the counter was very friendly and welcoming. She could tell I wasn't in to buy a puppy so she left me to have fun looking at the puppies and checking out the toys. The shop is clean, there is a heap of stock and heaps of puppies around to show you their best puppy-dog-eyes expressions. It's really fun.

The dogs all seemed well cared for and had been microchipped, fully vaccinated and guaranteed vet cover for 2 weeks after adoption, which I thought was really good. The only thing I didn't like was when I asked about my puppy's parents I was given a photo printed out on a piece of paper of just ONE of the parents, and no details. Still a little iffy about the place, but I got a beautiful new addition to my family and they were friendly and helpful enough.

The birds are crammed in together, in some places there are 5 or 6 birds in one small cage. The birds are obviously not well cared for, many of them have feathers and tails that are tatty or missing. When I was there today one budgie's tail was gone, there was what looked like some blood on its back and it was very puffed up like it was sick or hurt. Don't bother supporting this place with your business.
