Visiting Amarillo and realizing there's not a ton to do, so we figured--why not check out the zoo? First off, the woman at the front desk was incredibly kind and welcoming. You can tell she cares, and that made a great first impression. The zoo itself is small and has a certain charm, especially with how close you can get to the animals. But as we walked through, it became hard to ignore some concerns. Several enclosures appeared to need immediate attention, and a number of animals seemed distressed--most noticeably the bears, who paced back and forth repeatedly. It left us with a heavy feeling. While the zoo has potential and some genuinely caring staff, it also feels like the animals deserve more space, better conditions, and a higher level of care. Get close and personal with the animals for only $8 per adult. Nice small zoo, kinda like the Austin zoo. I did not get to see the elk which is disappointing. We went earlier in the morning before it got too hot so the animals would be active. I would come back. It is not too long, and the walk is enjoyable. Watch the water around the monkey island and you will see bullfrogs and the occasional bull frog tad pole coming up for air. If you have never seen one they are quite large. read more

Quite a cute little zoo! I didn't expect to see so many different animals here. It makes a nice day trip to see the animals. The lion was did quite a few nice roars and the donkey brayed quite a lot. The monkeys were constantly swinging and climbing which proved to be entertaining. I couldn't believe they even had prairie dogs. Now I am aware that prairie dogs are not uncommon in these parts of Texas, but it was my first time ever seeing one in real life. I also was thrived to see the buffalo! I haven't seen buffalo much in a very long time, so much that I forgot just got big they are. I didn't know what to expect from a zoo in Amarillo but I thoroughly enjoyed my visits to the zoo so far! We weren't expecting a lot when we came to this zoo... but it was actually not too bad! We had a free family pass for the zoo BUT were surprised at how reasonable the regular rates are! I believe it was $4 for adults, $3 seniors (62+), $2 children (3-12), children 2 and under are free. There is 1/2 price admission on Mondays. The zoo itself is definitely small but we had about and hour or so to kill before we had other plans so we came here. It was actually a good amount of time there and we saw 99% of the animals. Our favorites were the lions and tigers. Surprised to see such large amazing animals in such a small zoo. We'd recommend. It's something to do. read more

Starting off, this zoo is pretty cheap. It was only 4 dollars at most per person, and it's half priced on Monday's. However, as soon as we started walking through the zoo we could tell it wasn't properly cared for. Most of the animals were matted with mud, grass, and probably feces. None of the animals had clean water, much less enough of it. The day i went, it was 100 degrees, and all of the animals were panting heavily and trying to cool down. Most animals weren't responsive at all, barely even registering that there were people near them. It wasn't exactly a complete disaster, but we left pretty quickly after seeing how poorly the animals were cared for. They had an Eclectus parrot in the front who was responsive and was whistling at us, but he had no toys and i could see no water for him either. I just felt bad for the animals, and will not be returning back :( read more

This place was sad. The only thing that I had going for it was that it was cheap. There are only a handful of animals there to begin with. It seemed as if half of the animals were not even in a viewing area due to it being a bit chilly outside. The types and amount of animals was limited. The place seems more like a sanctuary than a zoo. While we were there we ran into several young teenagers that were there volunteering. They were disrespectful, not doing their jobs,and they were sitting around playing on their phones most of the time. I let the only real employee that I saw know of the situation, but it didn't seem to phase her. read more

We were very disappointed in the living conditions of the few animals they have. They didn't have clean water to drink and it was 102 degrees. The pens were small ,dirty and no shade for some. Most of the animals seemed to be under fed and hungry. It was so sad. If that is the best they can do they need to move the animals to a different zoo and close . read more

We have a great time taking my 2 year old. It wasn't so big that she needed a stroller to see an the animals. The staff was helpful and friendly. They had it all decorated for a Halloween event and it looked fun. Perfect for a afternoon day trip. read more

This was a small zoo but it has been kept up and it's not expensive at all. The animals weren't real active when we were there but we saw all of them and we were closer to them than other zoos allow. I plan to visit again the next time I'm in Amarillo. read more

This is the smallest zoo we have been to so far. What we loved about it was it was not crowded and the zoo offers great views of the few animals they have. The weather was perfect during our October 2016 visit. read more

Really kind of lame - it is only $4/person, but most exhibits were empty - not sure if animals were gone or inside because it was cold. Many exhibits leave you guess as to what animal you are looking at. Lions and tigers were nice to see but their fenced in area was small compared to the 2 bison and 2 elk that have a huge area. It was New Years Eve and there where only 5 people in the entire park - including my wife and I. things like the reptile house are closed because of the pandemic. Took us about 20 minutes to see everything. Kids might like it if they don't get to see some animals (though a long horn cow is not that rare in TX). read more

It is a small, inexpensive zoo. The exhibits seemed well taken care of. I liked how they made the most of their space by building a false western town around the various goats, rams, etc. It's a good place to take your family. read more

This zoo was really sad and small, including the animals enclosures were all very small. None of the animals had water and they all looked sad and were very smelly. Its very cheap and you can tell. There was only 4 staff members that we saw and nobody was talking to us . read more

Founded in 1955, remodeled in 1993, and expanding this summer, the Amarillo Zoo is a small zoo that is great for anyone looking to kill time and do something a little different. Only $4 for adults. Definitely worth a stop if you are in Amarillo. read more

I love this zoo although it is small, it is cheap and you can see all the animals. We went to the zoo lights and it was perfect temp, you can get pics taken with Rudolph and Tiger Claus and the best part is it is all free except to get in of course. read more

First things first this zoo is free on Mondays and I believe it is only 4 dollars for adults during the week. It looked like there was renovations being made, and I think because it was a monday the grill or gift shop was not open. This zoo is very small,moving at a slow pace and stopping to take pictures of all the animals only took 45 minutes. So if they place is crowd you can always do multiple laps to go back and enjoy your favorites. The animals here are up close and personal compared to other zoos I have been to. Being from the east coast it was cool to see a Texas Longhorn in person. The kangaroo and parrots give the best entertainment. They had 3 lions, 2 tigers plus a couple of bears... oh my :) read more

This is a small zoo, but educational for kids. I took my son here to show him how sad the animals were being locked up in such tiny enclosures. Even at 5 years old he could see how depressing it was and asked if the animals would eventually be set free. The tiger was standing with its head pressed against the cage and not moving, a grown man was messing with the longhorn and pulling on it's horns while his kids were laughing, and a couple was throwing small rocks at the kangaroo to try and get a reaction out of him. Only reason I gave it 1 star was because it was an eye opening experience for my son to see how these animals are treated, how they're forced to live and how wrong it is for them to be locked up. read more

A nice, clean, small zoo. We didn't get to have a good look at absolutely everything since it started to storm, but the zoo is conveniently located between a community pool and a small amusement park called Wonderland. A definitely must go to place if you're in Amarillo on a pretty day! read more

I'm from California and I've been to a ton of zoos so I'll start by saying that. Before my husband and I decided to go we looked up the price and seeing it was so cheap we were like "eh it's probably really low budget" but hey it's $4 a person so if it's a waste then so be it, it's less than $10 for an experience. Upon arrival it's kind of confusing to figure out where to go because you feel like you went the wrong way and end up in a park, literally. But within the park is the Zoo. We paid and went in and it was low budget, nothing fancy but I didn't have high expectations, we just wanted to explore the city while we were there. I won't spoil it for everyone because I think it was awesome as a surprise but it's a pretty cool zoo and they have some animals you would never imagine a little $4 Zoo having. I grew up in Texas and I went when I was younger and it seemed so awesome then, now it's so boring there's not enough animals which I'm some cases is good but maybe the play area for kids. But all they have is a random rock and some log it's definitely gone down hill. read more

It's super affordable ($4/adult) and the animals are beautiful but it's heartbreaking to see such big, beautiful creatures in such small enclosures- especially when it's surrounded by a golf course and an amusement park- knock it all down and give these animals some space :( the lions, tigers, bear, donkey, foxes all have such tiny pens. The lions and tigers were so upset- they literally point their butts towards you and projectile urinate at people. Idk- I loved seeing them so close up, the staff were all very nice, the zoo was clean- the enclosures were just much too small. Maybe get rid of half the animals and double the enclosure sizes or something idk :/ read more

Boo At The Zoo. I will have to say that coming from a larger city, not having as many things to do in terms of fun outings for myself, me and my husband, and as a family with our three boys, it was sad to think of when we first moved here. I will say that Amarillo Zoo has been renovating and coming up with fun activities that you can take your family to enjoy. Also it is very cheap to go there for a nice little outing.
