We had a great experience at Amanda's on Saturday morning! We were in town for the Wild West Gravel Fest and stopped in before the race to fuel up. We we're greeted with smiles from Amanda and her team, just like every person that came in after us. As a couple from a small town, we know what it's like to know everyone, but Amanda knew EVERYONE. We stopped here for a coffee break on our across the country road trip. Extremely friendly place and a representation of what America should always be. A locally owned place. Coffee was great. When traveling we like to stop at local eateries. Amanda's does not disappoint. It's in the downtown in a quaint older building with high tin ceilings. The food is honest and good. I had the bierock and onion soup. The meat filling and dough were in perfect proportion. The filling uses a generous amount of caraway seed. Make sure you like that flavor which I do. Hubs had the roast beef panini and chips. He said the beef was a high quality. Service was friendly. We will return next time in town! read more

Amanda (whoever you are), you have a new fan, supporter and advocate (of your bakery/bistro at least)! I never discovered this gem in Abilene previously, until some friends of ours introduced us. We went for lunch. FOOD: Focused, but delicious little lunch menu at reasonable prices. Periodic specials. Sandwiches and soups made to order. I had a delicious berrock and French onion soup. Nice selection of baked goods. Diet-busting scones, muffins, gooey butter cake and the like (Lemon-Almond scone, wow!). DRINKS: They have the obligatory coffee and espresso bar, but this is my first encounter with the legendary tea bar, so I will focus on the tea. (You are no doubt familiar with the custom in most culinary establishments, you order a hot tea, you are charged $2.50 as an underpaid teenager hands you a styrofoam cup filled with hot water and a Lipton tea bag). Not here. They have a vast selection of loose leaf tea leaves from various corners of the Earth (I assume). I've tasted several from the extensive menu and the flavors are habit changing (one flavor, affectionately called 'Misty Morning', tastes like waffles and syrup). They have the fancy over-the-cup tea infusers that brew right at your table. You can also buy the leaves to take home. SERVICE: Outstanding! The staff is so friendly, welcoming and helpful. Stopped in Saturday (Dec 5th) ordered to go: Bierock and some awesomely delicious scones. For my taste -previously German made- the Bierock was a little bland, but ok with mustard. It was wonderful that it was made in fresh bread and not a biscuit like some make them. However the scones are the best I've had the pleasure of eating. SO GOOD! I love this place! They make the best sandwiches. And you have to try their baked goods. The gooey bars are to die for! It's a small cozy atmosphere in the back of the bookstore (I hear they're going to move soon to a bigger place) so there's not a lot of seating yet but the place has some charm. They make specialty coffees too, but I don't drink coffee so I haven't tried it. I've heard its really good though. They also serve breakfasts but I haven't been down there that early, I normally go for the lunches, which are delicious. read more

This is a little gem of a place. It took a few minutes to get our sandwiches, but that's what happens when they are assembled on the spot! Besides, I was so entertained looking around at the various items for sale (jewelry, antiques, kick-knacks, and more) that I really didn't notice. On a "girlfriends day trip" to Abilene we had a wonderful lunch at Amanda's! Soup was freshly made, sandwiches were unique and tasty! When we asked for pie for dessert, Sweet Amanda asked how long we would be in town, because although she hadn't made pies that day, she could have one ready in 2 hours!! I moved to abilene a year ago from California. On a day for myself I strolled into Amanda s bistro & Cafe'. Ordered a caramel machiatto and the chicken walnut sandwich. Much to mysurprise; this small yet gorgeously homey cafe has wonderful knickknacks to stroll through while you wait; which was not for long by the way..and both the machiatto and sandwich were fantastic! The smells in the store..the coffee..the specialty sandwich..brought me back to California for a mintue in my new small home town. Just enough sweetness to my drink..and the sandwich had just enough sweet and savory taste with an occational crunchiness from the walnuts!!! Definately going to go back.. highly recommend this as a stop if you are visiting and a new favorite for the locals! read more
