    Prawn pasta

Absolutely great experience I had the prawn pasta I think it was called with a half pint of Peroni and it hit the spot if you want good Italian food in London that is just the right portion size I would definitely check this place out, it does get pretty busy sometimes so sometimes you might need a reservation also luali is such a great server so ask for him of course he will make sure your beers are coming haha

The best meal we had during our 4-day excursion to London was at Amalfi. Our servers delivered great service more along the lines of what we'd get in the states. The cleanliness and pleasant environment created a very comfortable and fine ambiance. Food came out hot and tasted great. The menu had Gluten Free offerings which was one of the reasons we chose this restaurant.

ATMOSPHERE: Casual spot in the bustling are of Soho. FOOD: Strozzapreti Pugliese - Awesome! Stozzapreti pasta (like a twisted rigatoni but not hollow) with Luganica sausage, pancetta & broccoli done in a red chili butter and topped with grana padano cheese. O-M-G. Add this to a bucket list for foods! Margherita Pizza - Good. Crust was thin & soft. SERVICE: Fast & friendly. TIP: One of the few places open late (past 11pm.)

We wanted some Italian food and stumbled on this place by accident. So glad we did though, the food was outstanding. We both decided to get a starter. I got the tricolore salad, which was a reasonable size and was made even better by how good the buffalo mozzarella was. My Dad went for the garlic bread which was like a meal in itself. Certainly a generous portion. Mains wise, I went for the seafood linguine, which was a mix of prawns, mussels and squid. I wanted something which wasn't creamy and involved seafood and this was an instant winner. My dad went for the pesto spinach and ricotta ravioli which he devoured in five minutes. A smashing meal, with super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Not the cheapest place, but very competitive prices, given the area. Will definitely be back.

I love this little Italian restaurant on Old Compton Street especially it's beautiful downstairs area with it's long antechambers which look like they're been made from an old air-raid shelter and which can seat up to 20 people. I've organised many a reunion here. The menu is typically Italian but the pizza's are loaded with fresh toppings and their desserts are to die for. Try their garlic bread with caramelised onions as well which certainly hits the spot and prepares you for the main courses. Nice selection of wines and beers compliment the food and overall you can expect to have 3 courses and a drink for around £25 which, with the great service, is not a bad price at all for the area.

I am not greeted as I enter Amalfi, far from it, I am left wondering if I should wait to be seated or go awandering myself. I try to look for my party of people but none of them are visible and I realise that there is more than one option of staircase veering downwards so I return to the entrance to wait for direction. When no direction comes despite me looking at the bartenders and supposed staff I ask the nearest person who looks like they may be a staff member and she says with reluctance that 'well I'm currently not supposed to be working, but I'll see if I can help you'. So I am then led through these narrow walkways, passing many nooks and crannies until I reach the hollow pit that my own dining group have been assigned to. The tables and chairs are wooden, stiff and tightly packed together as if it was a long forgotten storage cellar. I also notice in a dark corner that a Christmas tree and Christmas laurel has been not so well hidden. Even a piece of the wall was loose and coming away from the bottom. Framed old pictures are plastered all over the walls, adding to the impression that space is limited and that it feels like we've been transported to a war-time bomb shelter. The toilets are not signposted and hard to find.  A passing-by waiter serves me the olives that I ordered before even glancing my way let alone asking if I want a drink. I won't take it personally since my friends said it took ages for them to get a beer too. Incidentally, the Sicilian Castelvetrano Olives (which they say on the menu is imported from Sicily and a must-have for olive lovers) is nothing special but rather quite under-extraordinary. The main I tried was the Pollo Sophia Pizzetta (spicy shredded chicken pieces, roasted red pepper and mozzarella on top of a thin and small oval pizza served alongside a decent side salad with olives, rocket, cherry tomato and red onion) - this as a combination was a-okay just not stupendous in any way. Likewise, the pomegranate juice I had (which comes with a chunk of lime) was pleasant enough but not of any particular consequence. Incidentally the Pollo Sophia Pizzetta was served on a sheet of paper with writing on it - as if this was supposed to add style to the dish when actually it was ridiculous since oil from the pizza had seeped into the paper somewhat, making it soggy and sticking to the pizza when I cut it. Meanwhile the rosemary potatoes side dish was somewhat of a let down as they come with charred potato skin and not much substance or flavour. Simply put, the food was permissible to an extent, the service almost non-existent and the surroundings just shocking.

When I travel to UK from the states, there's one place ill take my friends and vendors for yummy Italian: Amalfi in Soho. The dish I crave for is their bolognese dish. So flavorful and good. The spaghetti is perfectly cooked. Their sauce makes you want to lick your plate afterwards. All their appetizers are amazing...I'll order their antipasto salad too. The mojitos are on point....very stiff which is awesome after a long day of work. Ambience is very traditional and dimly lit tables.

    Could have been better ...

Since my husband only eats carbs when we are on vacation I will jump at any chance to go out for pizza. He was in the mood for pizza and wanted to eat dinner at Amalfi, so that's where we ended up. It's in a great spot amongst all the bars / pubs on Old Compton Street. I was very happy that we got a table at the window. I had a great view of the nightlife starting outside. We both ordered a pizetta (half of a large thin crust pizza) with a salad, and a glass of the house red wine. I had mushrooms and pancetta on mine, the Hubs had anchovies and olives. It took a long time to get served, and when the food made it to the table we were underwhelmed. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't particularly good. The crust was fine, and the sauce was fine, but the chef was stingy with the cheese and toppings. The salads were also rather ordinary. The atmosphere was kind of nice (busy but not frantic) until they sat a friend of the chef and his date next to us. He was loud and eager to show off, so he called the chef to his table and asked for something that wasn't on the menu. They got their food fairly quickly (of course) and we were both thankful, because it shut that Queen up! The food was OK, the service was slow, the atmosphere was alright until Miss I-Know-The-Chef showed up. So, our Amalfi experience can be summed up with one gesture ... *shrug*

The upstairs is a corner view onto a street with dark woods and leather booths, while inside an open kitchen and a low-key young crew is putting out some simple, tasty food. Mostly appetizers, pastas and some pesce and carne dishes. Not a destination, but a good spot and one of the few restaurants on the street open on a Sunday. The downstairs basement hosts a cocktail bar that was closed on the Sunday we visited. We enjoyed the feel of the place, along with a bit of montepulciano d'abruzzo, some olives, a green salad, pork belly and a toothsome risotto with zucchini and prawns. Not a bad meal, priced pretty well, and a nice setting with friendly staff. We had such a good time that we failed to notice the police inspectress inside talking to the Paesan crew. The white and red police tape line both inside and outside the restaurant were in our peripheral view the whole dinner, but once outside, we noticed that a gigantic police triangle of tape took up the entire street corner, a female inspector was stationed there, and that down on the cobblestone sidewalk, a streetful of dessicated lemon and lime wedges lay from the night before, leading us to ponder, what exactly had happened here?

The specials all sounded fantastic but I plumped for dandelion salad and the pumpkin and goats cheese pizza. Utterly yummy! Not excessive portions just packed with flavour. The waitress was helpful and calm and the red wine warm and fruity. I'll come again for definites. There is a cocktail bar in the basement and a choice of some interesting sharing options on the main menu for groups. Prices are very reasonable and if my meal was anything to go by, the rest will be as good. I am well impressed.

Instead of trying to resolve the issue professionally, the owner became extremely rude and dismissive. Shockingly, he brought us the bill immediately, refused to serve the rest of the items we had already ordered (including the tiramisu), and directly asked us to leave the restaurant. We were calm and respectful throughout the interaction, but he refused to even listen to our side before abruptly ending the conversation with, "I'll get your bill," and telling us to leave. I honestly don't know whether he was irritated because we had an infant with us or because we requested a modification, but the behaviour was completely unacceptable and deeply disappointing. I still can't believe a restaurant in London could treat customers this way. Truly unbelievable service and an experience I would never want anyone else to go through. We initially ordered 3 items. The pizza was absolutely fine, so we never raised any concern about it. However, the pasta simply didn't suit our taste buds, so we politely requested a few alterations. Instead of handling it professionally, you refused to serve the tiramisu as well -- assuming we'd dislike that too and ask for modifications? Honestly, I wish I had taken a picture of the pasta to show how it looked. As a restaurant owner, you should understand that every customer has different taste preferences. And just for clarification -- we never asked for the pasta to be cancelled. In fact, we were even willing to pack it and take it home after paying for it, despite not liking the taste. You were the one who offered to cancel the remaining order, and we simply agreed. I would humbly request whoever is in charge to please check the CCTV footage and see whether we were ever rude while requesting alterations. Throughout the interaction, you only kept speaking from your side and didn't even give my wife a chance to explain. Is that really what good customer service looks like?

However, each of my visits yielded a variable experience, meaning the quality consistency is lacking which means I wouldn't recommend it to a good friend. Not a good thing when it comes to lesser known restaurants. My first time, I was drawn in by the golden lights radiating from the bar and the warehouse lighting which looks almost chic when paired with the exposed brick and glass embellishments. Although my boss and I were the only ones here, the staff paid little to no attention to us - no greeting or any mind paid to us until we physically walked over the bar, distracting the group chatting away in their huddle. The wine was on the pricier side. The second time I came, the place was brimming with city brokers having Thirsty Thursday. The prosecco was decent and we had a nice time. Until we got the bill for the 3 shots of tequila we had which totalled £48. So that's over 15 pounds for each shot...when we queried the bill, the staff explained that the quality of the tequila he poured us explained the cost, exasperated with our stupidity. We said we were not going to pay for that just because when asked what kind, we had probably said "whatever" or "doesn't matter". Doesn't that usually mean house stuff? The third time I had post-birthday party brunch here where I opted for the Italian breakfast which means eggs, soppresetta, sour dough with pate?, tomato, and tuscan sausage. My tastebuds were (to be fair) taking a beating due to the hangover but it was just mediocre at best. Plus the stuff on the sour dough was strange and unpleasant.
