The decor was adorable. Even on a rainy (then sunny) evening, we stayed dry and perfectly warm. The food they catered (spam musubi, rice, kaluha pork, mac salad, and coleslaw) was amazing. Everyone in our group thought they catered out to a Hawaiian restaurant, but it was all them. My mouth is watering just thinking about the food! I can't stress enough how amazing this place is. Last night was Friday Night Date Night, the night of the week where Wife N. and I practice the date night state-of-mind, even if it means staying home and cooking in. But tonight, we gave a second visit to Restaurant Ama, which at the moment is the west 'burbs closest legit tapas bar. This review is an amalgam of two visits; one about three weeks back, and last night. Both Friday nights. The cool thing about tapas bars is that each time you go (up to a point anyway) you get to sample a variety of different bite-size Pinxtos ("pinchos") and Tapas (small plate) dishes. It's also one of the problems: I keep wanting to order that delicious plate I had last time, instead of being focused on the goal of trying something new every time I visit. In the end, this second visit overlapped the first only in that Pork Belly, which won out over my ultimate goal. Delicious as it was last visit, the perfectly-seared pork belly was a delicious bite of an umami-bomb. The tangy salsa verde and the crunch of a crostini base augmented the meat while the baby shishito peppers lifted everything with their off-bitter bite. Gildas: bite-sized skewers of almost-creamy marinated sardine, green olive and two tiny banana peppers (think mild pepperoncini) all in one bite. It's two briny, creamy, fishy, tangy-yet-smooth bites of heaven. Papas Bravas: Delightfully-crisp fried potato wedges with a warmly-spiced bravas sauce, and a cooling beef fat aioli made for a lovely second. Grilled octopus: four bite-sized skewers with tenderly-grilled octopus cube, and roughly equal portions of confit potato and chorizo-stuffed green olive. Salsa verde. Wow. Queso Quemado: Baguette slices on which to spread the deeply-flavored and bitter-leaning salvitxada ("the orange colored sauce") and honey. Each element had a purpose, but the proportions were off-kilter. We felt there was way too much of the salvitxada, and not enough honey to balance it. The plate would have been better with half the sauce, but otherwise it was a good dish and the one dish we wished we'd eaten earlier in the course. The cheese, a half-inch-thick slice, hits the table hot and melty. 8 minutes (getting through the plates) later it's firm and doesn't spread and gets that "I used to be a hot cheese" cold cheese texture. Goes from a 4* dish to a 2* once it congeals. Best scarf down this one the moment it's brought to the table. Grilled Broccolini: great flavor combinations on this plate. It's a decent grilled veg to begin with, but then they add this ajo blanco (white, creamy sauce that tastes of almonds--think something along the lines of a soupy nutty Peruvian hummus), a quick drizzle of mild chili oil, and shaved garlic chips on top and this plate becomes a complex interweaving of flavors and textures. Grilled Endive: Nicely grilled, very flavorful, but could have used more restraint with the saucing. Half the amount would have been perfect. Rabas: think fried calamari rings. Great, good texture, but...probably about average. They were fine. Mussels: perfectly acceptable, great even, but nothing to write home about. Tastes just like white wine and chorizo mussels, which is what it is. Bone Marrow: west of the hill? Say whuuuuutt? As perfect as we'd hoped it would be. We shared the Txuleton (chu-le-tone) steak, rare. It came with fries, more of that salvitxada, and lemon wedges. The steak was flavorful, if a tad closer to mid-rare than rare (which wasn't really an issue, we were aiming for mid-rare anyway, but any time we order mid-rare we always get medium so we tend to order towards the rare side). Meat itself had been well-seasoned. We're not 100% sold on the salvitxada (though, traditionally, we do understand it's what one serves at a barbecue) but we found those lemon wedges brought the entire plate together. Get some lemon juice all over that orange sauce, and oddly, almost like miracle fruit, the bitterness of the salvitxada greatly diminishes and all the other flavors in the beef come alive as well. The lemon unlocks the flavors! Cocktails: * Flower Garden: much more floral than sweet herbal/floral drink. Delicious. * Birds of Paradise: Oh man I could not get enough of this drink (but alas, I was the driver, so one was enough, even though I'd otherwise want another). * Good Ol' Fashioned: Pretty typical, decent. Our overall cocktail impression: their in-house recipes are fabulous. Repeats of "every bar has one of these" are average to a tick above. You can get the same Old Fashioned everywhere--come here for the cool house recipes. Succumbed to the desire to cap it off with dessert. Had the Creme Catalina. Think "a creme brulee and orangy-citrus curd had a baby." Creamy not-quite custard interior, torch brulee on top. We've never had its equal. Guys, Ama nails it for anyone within a reasonable distance of downtown Hillsboro who has anything from the munchies on up and for whom tapas sounds good. read more

Ama is a fantastic addition to downtown Hillsboro. I've been in once every few months since they opened and every time walk away having had a great meal. The broccolini is simple but hands down probably the best item they have. The charred vegetable pairs so well with the white sauce. I also like the mussels, octopus and anything with olives - can't go wrong there! The cocktails are good and I do like the fun options on the HH menu that come with a bite sized snack garnish. Service has always been great and their rooftop bar is great in the summer. read more

Our son and his wife recommended this place. We met up with them, their children and his wife's parents. We came in with a large party, so we made reservations. Very nice, modern ,casual seating, friendly staff and a generally comfortable place to dine with a large adventurous group. Look, I love myself a tapas joint and it had been awhile. I didn't even pick up a menu, simply allowing everyone to pick for me. We received plate after plate of delicious, interesting and maybe a challenge or two dishes. Lesson learned: When the stylized Mexican cocktail place fails miserably in a town filled with numerous entrenched Mexican options, hit 'em with something they don't have. The High Ground failed here partially because Downtown Hillsboro hasn't wrapped its mind around concepts as simple as "nightlife" or "adult establishments," but mostly because it's hard to send people to a glossy, somewhat removed version of a cuisine and culture being presented much more effectively about a block in any direction. Tapas isn't exactly a new idea in Portland: I'm guessing half of Toro Bravo's clientele was from Washington County, and spots like Navarre, Andina, Urdaneta, Casa Vale, Brasa Haya, BAR Botellón, Lechon, and Can Font have been worth the drive/train in for years. But west of the tunnels has been an absolute wasteland for tapas until you reach the valley. What do we have, one spot in Tigard? Well that just won't do. Our friends from Urban Decanter in Forest Grove took pity on this recently vacated space in the wine district (hey, Hillsboro Wine Merchants and the Three Goats tasting room say I'm not wrong) and opted for what they view as a more Basque take on Northwest tapas. At Ama, that means you're getting very little of the hits like Jamon iberico, which isn't a staple here outside of Costco and end up being $2 to $3 a slice in Oregon when it's cents on the dollar in Spain or even back east. Instead, you're rewarded for ordering a brackish plate of Gildas (anchovies), some fried squid, grilled octopus, or grilled manchego with a more garlic-forward romanesco. There's a fantastic steak on the menu, and there are giant tiger prawns that are well prepared but, again, priced appropriately for a place that doesn't typically see them. This space is going to succeed if people use it correctly: As one of the evening's stops, if not necessarily THE stop. While not adamantly demanding people use it solely as a bar, as its predecessor did before it, Ama's deep cocktail menu and array of wines and sangria suggest that it should be taken seriously: No toddler stops after the Tuesday night market and no gam-gam and pop-pop on OSU graduation weekend. Take friends here to celebrate. Take someone you care about for pre-dinner drinks and bites. Get a carafe of sangria and people-watch on market nights. But sit there and use it as the space for which it is intended: A place to settle in, pick at dishes, and frequent on the way to the next stop. Ama has tremendous potential to be what its tapas contemporaries in Portland already are and what the tapas bars and cafes in Spain were always meant to be: Gathering places for the enjoyment of food, wine, and people. I beg you, Hillsboro... please don't fuck this up before they've even placed the sign out front. read more

We had a great meal here on Saturday night. We walked in w/out a reservation and they were able to seat us right away at the bar. Between the two of us, we ate 6 appetizers and tapas plus a dessert. That was plenty of food. All that food plus two glasses of wine and a cocktail were less than $100. All the food was good to great. Our service was fast and friendly. The only thing I'd suggest they improve is the atmosphere. The walk to the bathroom is through their storage area and the decor is nice but a bit sparse & too many hard surfaces for my taste. read more

One quarter iceberg lettuce grilled with cream sherry dressing and manchego cheese. Amazing! Serrano ham. Always good. And Rabas (calimari)). Really good. The roof top has a great atmosphere and view of cute, downtown Hillsboro. It was our waitress's first day ands was lovely. I had questions about the wine, she was honest that it was her first day, but she came back with the answers and a suggestion which turned out to be a perfect wine for me. It was Tempranillo. Hey here's a tip!! Maybe clean the elevator so it doesn't reek of urine! And maybe not charge $16 for one single overcooked shrimp swimming in oil. Not anything special - potato bravos is just a wedged baked potato with a squirt of mayo - tasteless. The Sangria was weak. The AC was so loud on roof deck you couldn't hear person across from you. It's a cute little spot for a solo date or date night. I was able to try their papas bravas and pork belly sandwich with a glass of wine. The papas bravas had a great sauce, the potatoes had a nice crunch but to dry for my personal preference. The pork belly sandwich was small but mighty delicious. Glass of wine did not disappoint ( when does wine ever really?) This place is definitely not a place where you should expect a huge meal, it's tapas. It's nice to have something like this in the area without having to go to Portland. The staff was so sweet and attentive. read more

This new tapas restaurant in Hillsboro definitely shows some promise! Two of us visited today for lunch and ordered the octopus skewers, Spanish tortilla and mussels. The mussels were perfectly cooked - with plenty of toasted bread to dip into the delicious broth. The tortilla was also quite good - very light. The octopus skewers could have been a bit more tender (less chewy) and for $9, four bites of octopus, each with a little piece of potato and half an olive seemed overpriced to me. The sauces on the plate, though, were delicious. Two of us shared the three plates for a light lunch. The menu is a bit limited, but we are interested in coming back to try more items. read more

On the afternoon of 12/26/25, we ordered "Land and Sea Paella" for four at $34/person expecting a large yummy plate similar to that shown on their website. Instead of that lovely platter shown, we were served a small paella pan heaping with over cooked deep fried chicken wings. There were some shrimp and mussels, but not many. I told our server that a double order of bar wings over rice was not what we were expecting, certainly not for $34/person and she said she tell the kitchen, but nothing was done and she never returned to ask how it was. Had we not been there to visit with special friends, I would have sent it back. read more

My husband and I were on our way to the bakery next door and stumbled upon Ama. We saw they served brunch on the weekends so we decided to try this place instead. The food was delicious! We were shocked there weren't more people inside. Our service was great and the restaurant was very nice. The portions are a little on the smaller side (compared to other brunch restaurants) so I would recommend getting an appetizer or another small plate if you're hungry! We loved it! We were seated immediately, and ordered a couple cocktails. They were wonderfully delicate and sophisticated. Our food came out very fast. We ordered Papas Bravas, Grilled Veggies (broccolini), Queso a La Plancha, Bone Marrow, and the Pork Belly. Everything was fantastic. The sauces were exquisite, and balanced the dishes very well. We both agreed that the broccolini was our favorite. The white sauce was just so good. We also enjoyed the goat cheese a lot! We can't wait to come back and try some more dishes.
