Waylon is amazing! He is honest, personable,and very helpful. Waylan, Could easily up sell you, but he doesnt. It is my experience that other mechanics will do whatever work, even if unessesary. Waylan told me a price to possibly fix one of my cars. He went on to say he would not recommend it and that he would feel very bad if I went ahead with the repair. I have been bringing my 2006 Toyota to AMA for many years for issues ranging from new brakes/batteries to oil leak to finding cause of a complete breakdown after I got towed to them. They are super kind, thorough, and honest. A friend of mine, a retired Toyota mechanic (my "help line" when issues arise) gave them a thumbs up for quality diagnoses and work done. I originally came to AMA for a 60k service on an Audi A4. They were very easy to communicate with and knowledgeable about what the service required. The price was very affordable compared to other shops and my car was done at the time they originally provided. The folks at AMA are both competent and kind. e.g. Today I had a lift put onto my accelerator to bring it closer to me (I'm having foot problems...though usually these lifts are added because you're too short for the configuration of the pedals.) However, when I went to pick up the car, I test drove it around the parking lot. I discovered to my horror that my foot automatically went to the accelerator even when I needed to brake! I tried several times, but could see that muscle memory would rule: a terrible accident in the making, so I asked them to remove the lift. Not only did they immediately get to it (knowing I had a physical therapy appointment to get to). But as I was paying my bill they very generously waived the fee for removing the lift, which surely took as long as installing it. I recommend them with complete enthusiasm. Two lights were out and went to local AAP in the morning to pick up bulbs to replace. Was shocked to find one bulb was $50 and the other was $25. Went to AMA. They found a third bulb in the rear that also was out. Replaced all three for $72 and got the car back that afternoon read more

Called for a new quote for my vehicle and pricing was lower than the dealer so I decided to bring my car here based on that as well as the reviews. Dropped my car off, confirmed the price and the work that would be done and left my car for the day. I received a call a few hours later saying the parts they had are actually faulty and they need to reorder them. A bit annoying but I wasn't upset and picked my car up. They said the parts should be there by Monday of the following week and they would call me to schedule. Well Monday came and went and I never heard from them. I finally decided to call on Wednesday to see if they were delayed and the guy was like oh yeah, we have them. Okay...I've been waiting for the parts to get my car repaired... Again, I was annoyed, but not upset because I understand they're busy. I made an appointment to bring my car back in two days. Brought my car back as scheduled and then said it would be done by midday which was fine. They called and said it was ready and I asked to confirm the price. The guy put me on hold and never came back to the phone. Okay...I decided to just head over since they'd given me a quote and never said the price had increased. When I got there to pay the price was about $400 more than I had been quoted. I asked why and they said they didn't have the same brand of parts so they had to go with a more expensive brand but they "preferred them anyway." It's interesting how flippant people are when it's other peoples money. They never communicated the price increase to me when I made the second appointment or when I dropped my car off, and $400 is not a small difference. I would have also thought they'd take a percentage off since the previous parts were faulty and I had to bring my car back a second time. This shop is highly recommended, but this experience was unprofessional and shady. I won't bring my car back here. read more

Perennially awesome little shop. Recommended by a friend years back, AMA has always treated me wonderfully - which often meant not treating me at all - either by telling me over the phone that they weren't the best place to have X or Y done, or by thoroughly examining my car's issues and telling me it wasn't a necessary repair, or making a quick adjustment and not bothering to charge me. The repairs they have done (sometimes big ones) have always been well-explained, reasonably priced, and well executed; I've yet to have anything that they worked on act up again afterward. You have to love a mechanic that's so busy with regular customers that they're routinely turning away work that they and the customer don't need. Note: AMA has changed ownership since I first started going there (a lot of reviews cite the old owner, who was stellar), but I'm happy to report that the quality of service has stayed consistent. read more

I don't want to jump the gun because it's only been a few days since these guys serviced my car, but so far I am satisfied. A total stranger I shared a table with (pre-COVID-19) at Costco recommended these guys and with all of the positive reviews here on Yelp I decided to take a chance for my out of warranty maintenance service. First, I was grateful that they are open, answering calls, and booking appointments during the shelter in place order. Second, over the phone they were polite and the quote seemed much more fair than the dealership. Third, the place reminds me of the junk pit I entrusted with my last car, essentially there are zero frills but vehicle servicing is happening perpetually during business hours in a visible space. Unfortunately, I didn't ask about the quality of the parts they use so you might quiz them if you're extra concerned about the performance of your vehicle. After feeling satisfied with the preliminary conditions I was ultimately relieved by the additional touches. One, they didn't replace a part they determined as being in perfectly good condition, instead of a needless and more costly process they removed the buildup from the part and put it back. Two, they found a crack in my radiator and they took a picture of it, further they tested the unit for any compromises and as a result they determined that the crack was inconsequential. Fingers crossed. As far as I can tell this experience has been worthwhile. The best mechanic is the one you don't see between routine maintenance so hopefully this favorable review will continue to represent any future experiences. read more

This place is the best. Incredibly honest, kind, respectful. They do great work. I've been bringing my car here for 5 years. Some examples of how great they are -- they will tell you if you could get some work done on your car but that it's not necessary to do and what the alternatives are, they've topped off my engine oil free of charge, I've had quotes come out cheaper ultimately (always feels great). Oh and as a woman I will say there is no sexism here. They never talk down to me or make me feel like I don't know what I'm talking about in terms of my car. These guys have been caring for my Subaru Impreza for the last 4 years. They are too rated, only fix what is ailing. Even when I come in with complaints about my brakes etc, they checked it out and found that my brakes were okay but instead my tires needed help. Amir has retired and is living life in the country. But Anad & Mike are still there! They have Patty who handles the front office... and I just LOVE them! THEY KEEP IT REAL. They don't BS around. They are honest and hardworking people. I usually will courtesy call them to see when's a good day or time to bring in my car. Some days they are busier than others. Usually when they open on a Monday or Friday... I'll have them look over everything when they do oil or tire changes. They'll let you know when you'll need to come back for different services. We recently brought in our 2005 Nissan Altima to be serviced. It had just been sitting for a couple years, and we now wanted to get things ready for our daughter to start driving. My hubby had an idea of what needed to be done. So he gave them a list. They came back with pricing quotes and a couple items on my hubby's list were actually crossed off. They said that those areas were in great shape and no service needed. They told us which items were priority and which could wait if we were on a budget and wanted to do things little by little. When I got two flats on my 2009 Audi Q7 due to damn potholes on the lovely streets of Oakland, I immediately called AMA in tears. {I had a car full of children on my after school pick up rounds, and I had enter the freeway not knowing the pothole claimed a tire. And I still had a couple more kids to pick up as well as get others to soccer} Patty, took my stress and anxiety and calmed me down with her reassuring tone that everything will be okay. She said to have the tow guy drop it off (this would be after hours) and they'll take care of it first thing in the morning. They are now able to send texts when your vehicle is ready for pick up. I'm not sure if someone new has taken over or if I've just been unlucky, but my last couple of experiences have left something to be desired. I had my car in for a fair amount of work a few weeks back. The guy who called with the estimate was very condescending when I asked why it was more than the estimate they'd given me a couple of months before. (Evidently he thought female = stupid.) They called when it was ready, and I asked how late they were open, just to confirm. Yes, 5:00. But when I was walking over to pick it up, they called me AGAIN, like, where are you? We thought you were coming. It was WELL before 5:00. Now I've discovered that since that work, which included an oil change, my car has been leaking a bit onto the concrete. So I took it in today, hoping that they'd throw it up on the lift and tighten the drain plug, or at least LOOK at it. Nope. This was 4:00. So I left. When I passed by at 4:30, the place was locked up tight as a...never mind. So to get this problem that AMA caused resolved I'll have to take the car back, leave it, and probably deal with that same arrogant, um, guy, as before, who today couldn't even be bothered to walk over and tell me to my face that they were "too busy"--even though it was utterly clear that what they were busy with was knocking off early. So, a word of warning: Don't assume their hours of operation mean anything. And don't assume that prior good reviews are worth anything. read more

Just to give context for this review, I gave a one star review to Meineke in Oakland after they overcharged me, failed to fix my problem, recklessly failed to wear masks, and even refused to refund me when their vending machine ate my coins. In contrast, it was a pleasure to deal with AMA AutoCare. They fixed my car's problems quickly for considerably less than what Meineke quoted, and they kept in touch with me throughout.
