Had my first-ever surf lesson today and chose Alysha Surf School. My choice turned out to be a great one: I had a great and safe first time surfing and was up and standing faster than I had imagined! The spot we met was easy to reach right around Waikik. I was given all the equipment I need; a surf board appropriate for my size, rash guard against the sun, and special reef shoes. After some warm-up, safety instructions, and dry practice on the beach we went right into the water. Our lesson was early in the day, so we had pretty much all the waves we could ask for to us. Our instructor for the day was Perry and he certainly knows his stuff. He made sure to lay a solid foundation in paddling and safety and still we came to the fun part fast enough. The fun part is riding waves of course and there was a lot of that! Another girl in my group, a beginner as well, was up and standing on her first wave and rode it half the way to the beach with Perry's guidance. For me it didn't take much longer than that and I had a lot of fun. Looking forward to surfing more. All in all a great experience. And unbeatable in terms of value-for-money if you compare it with the prices you typically see around Waikiki! read more

Perfect surf lesson for the beginners! I took lessons for several times already with other instructors in Korea and Waikiki, but now I can say that one with Al was the best! Since me and my friend are not native English speakers, he patiently and kindly gave us instructions everytime we tried to paddle, takeoff, and even get of the board. The best thing was he was not only just pushing board, but also tried to teach me how I can get the wave by myself. He kept explaining us which wave was good or bad so that we can have our own eyes for the waves. Everytime after I took one wave and came back to Al, he told me what was good and what was wrong. That really helped me to learn more! Taking early lessons like 6:30 or 7:30 AM helps you to enjoy calm ans less crowded beach. I took first lesson at Waikiki Beach and second at Alamoana Beach. Alamoana was not so crowded and had lot of fun waves which are fit for beginners. So thankful to Al for getting me and my friend to Alamoana beach. Definitely will take several more lessons with Al :) read more

Al you are a champion and a true gentleman, the lesson was fantastic, his classes were really small (the other two didn't turn up so it was just me ) and they are only $35 I had never surfed before and as a beginner I was not sure what to expect. Al coached me through the basics and had me catching small waves in a matter of minutes of being out in the water. The long board was great and helped so much with my balance I actually didn't even fall off on the first few tries, Al said that he has been surfing all his life and has nearly 20 years experience in teaching and I must say it really showed. I was very fortunate that his classes are small and the other two people didn't show up, I had a one on one session with Al and within 1 hour he had me in a more advanced area catching bigger waves. So let me start by saying that I had 2 other lessons in the last 8 years and still had no handle on how to stand on a board. I am 36 and not super fit or athletic in general. I saw a yelp special and thought to give it one last try. Al was super accommodating and made things easy. Did you know there is an EASY way to paddle out?? The other classes would tell you to "just pop up" and hope for the best. Not easy after 3 knee surgeries... Al took this into consideration and focused on the specific technique for ME to be successful ...then we practiced on the beach...and I was up on my 1st try in the water! Then we spent time learning to read the ocean and what were the best waves to get and which ones to let pass. By the end I was picking out my own waves and riding solo. Also... I passed another class and they asked what school I was in! Hands down better approach than others I tried and at half the cost. Highly recommend. read more

Alyssa surf School is a great school to learn how to surf, Al is a Hawaii grown surfer with years of experience and Aloha spirit. He is a very informative teacher he explains what it takes to be a safe surfer starting off with a safe spot to learn on the beach and time to be there to beat the crowd. He also does a great job on explaining the basics to get you standing and catching a wave on your first day surfing. He did a fantastic job with my 6yr old son, my son knows how to pop up and ride a wave all from the experience Al gave him. We will be taking more lessons with Al to gain more knowledge on the very addictive hobby surfing. Thanks Al for your outstanding Aloha spirit can't wait for our next lesson. Mahalo. What an amazing experience!! As my first official surf lesson, I honestly didn't know what to expect - kinda thought I'd be given some pointers and left to flail around in the ocean but I was so very very wrong! Al is very much invested in his students and giving them the surf experience as well as basic knowledge to develop skills further. He was extremely methodical and explained everything in a way that was intuitive and easy to follow. Plus he had great energy and enthusiasm! I trusted him completely letting him tell me what time the surfing was best and where to go. We beat the crowds, stayed safe, and I was able to ride a bunch of waves!! Aloha from the Newly Weds!! After Landing on this Beautiful Island celebrating our recent marriage (Woohoo!! long time coming!) My wife and I decided we just had to try our luck at surfing! You can't be in Hawaii and not surf at least once!! So we shopped around and settled fairly quickly on Alysha's Surf School after reading all the positive feedback for our surf instructor Al here on Yelp.. I was pretty nervous at first, but Al quickly put my nerves at ease with his detailed and hands on instructions..Within the first few tries me and my wife were up and catching waves like pros!! Our instructor Also picked a great area and the water was at a comfortable depth for me (I'm not a strong swimmer) so if your like me and a total chicken when it comes to deep water never fear Al the Surf Instructor is there!! read more

What a great experience! On New Year's Eve, a group of us took our first-ever surf lesson. Two of us are moms and three are kids - two tweens and one teen. I always wanted to try surfing (and it has been on my bucket list:) but never had the guts to do it. We had Albert and John as our instructors. They were both awesome! All of us were able to stand up on the board the first try. My 11-year-old son was very skeptical about surfing (although he enjoyed SUP before) but he had a blast with Albert and John. My teen also had a great time as she wanted to learn how to surf ever since we moved to Honolulu. All of us are now hooked and we want to take more lessons from Alysha Surf School again! We had our first ever surf lesson at Alysha surf school, with Perri as our instructor since Al was sick. It was awesome, after some basic explanations we got on the water for over one hour and a half of fun riding, and we both got to take some good waves standing up on the board. Perri is a very nice guy, he's there to help you get every wave you want to take, even when half of his body's muscles were sour from pushing us on the waves every 15 seconds. It was our last day on Oahu before going back home, and we felt very lucky to surf on Waikiki beach before our departure ! I'm very glad we got in touch with Al and his surf school, I don't think we could've found better for our first time surfing. And thanks again to Perri for his patience and his help ! I had a long time desire to surf. Finally with a first time visit to Waikiki, I had my FIRST LESSON with Albert. Albert listens, but instructs. Alberts is serious about the sport but infuses buckets of Aloha spirit to make it fun. Albert watches for strengths and week points to ensure success. And then Albert takes you to the water, and you catch your FIRST WAVE and there is nothing like it. You can hear the rolling growl on the white curl, and automatically you follow thru with the steps that Albert had taught, and as you stand with your confident surf stance and a huge smile on your face - you can hear Albert laughing and cheering "Good Job Girl". I had a phenomenal experience at Alysha's surf school. I had an excellent instructor Al. He made this novice feel very comfortable. He was very thorough, professional but most of all fun. I never thought I would even stand, but he got me to stand on almost every single wave. He taught me more then I would have imagined, ocean safety, how to read the ocean, how to paddle correctly, the correct stance, ediquette etc. He was totally chill and taught me a lot about the island. He also provided shoes, rash guard, board shorts, he had all the equipment. I did call around and found Alysha's surf school to be the most affordable. I'm stoked I chose them, it was awesome, I had a blast and am definitely going to take another lesson. read more

Took my first surf lesson today with Al and it was a great experience. This is probably the best deal you will find on Waikiki Beach for 2 hours of lesson. He went over safety and basic techniques on the beach first. We were by ourselves in a quiet spot in the water which was nice. I was able to stand up on my second try, It was actually a lot easier than I thought it'd be! I will be back for more lessons and will definitely recommend Al. I took some more lessons with Al after my initial one. He gave great one on one instruction and I actually ended up getting a private lesson for $35 because the other person cancelled. Only had a day left on our vacation in Waikiki and my wife and I wanted to complete our Hawaiian vacation with a surf outing, so Alysha's Surf School was the first surf school I called due to their 5 star Yelp review. He and his staff definitely deserve the five stars. My wife and I have never surfed before. Positives-timely response on initial call, very reasonable rates for our two hour lesson ($130 for a private 2hour lesson for my wife and I), pickup from the Sheraton Waikiki to the local uncrowded beach, friendly instructor Ryan who helped tow us around, great photos from Kenny, and an all around positive experience. Definitely give Al (the owner a call)-a great down to earth guy. read more

Took 5 of us (all beginners) out surfing and after a brief lesson on the beach assisted us on the first couple of tries by pushing the board to help us catch the wave and then basically told us when to paddle. They let us surf until we were tired, and took some amazing pictures that we ended up buying because we all couldn't think of a time when someone could surf next to us and take pictures again. They start you on a mix of soft tops and then give the harder fibreglass boards to the more athletic looking ones (I guess). Overall a good experience, will supply rash guards and little water shoes as it is very rocky. I don't recommend riding in their car though..little problem with critters. read more

We have tried to find a surf school which is not that expensive than the other ones and during my research I found this school which had the best price - all others at least 80$. First we were a little bit too late but that was no problem, Albert just extended the lesson. Very nice. He showed us how to surf, first outside the water and you hear and see that Albert knows what he es talking about. Very experienced und patient. After a few minutes of surfing I was able to take some waves on my own which was quite nice. Although we were very exhausted at the end, we've had a lot of fun. Thank you very much! read more

As they say when in Rome. If you go to Hawaii you have to try surfing! If you go surfing you have to go with these guys. Our Guy Duane was awesome. the land lessons were comprehensive, and easy to follow. once we got to the water they took really good care to make sure you ended up with a catchable wave. They were even accommodating about our waterproof video camera. It took me about 8 waves before I could say I surfed. The wife on the other caught her second wave. Thank you guys, we had a blast! Albert is very thoughtful and helpful for your surf lessons. I made an appointment with him and he called me back explaining about the jellyfish warnings on the beaches. We went the next day. My children (3 of them) were very well taken care of. Albert had the proper shoes for them to surf in and provided one of them a longer sleeve shirt to prevent her arms from chafing more. The 3 athletic teens were able to have as many rides in as they good get. Albert was fantastic and would recommend him with anyone wanting to have surf lessons for their young adult, teen, and tween children. AWESOME! read more

Such an awesome experience! Would highly recommend Alysha surf school to folks seeking to learn. I would even reach out to them again to improve! Al and Parry were great teachers. Took a 2 hour lesson @ 7:30am with a group of friends. Maybe ~30 minutes to learn basics, and the remaining time was out catching waves on the water! The school had rash guards and water shoes (a must!). As tourists, this was helpful! Awesome instructors that have a lot of years surfing, seem to really love the sport, and enjoy teaching others to love it also. Very hospitable and a great local experience overall! read more

I am very small Asian girl with no exercise. Decided to try surfing on my vacation in Hawaii. Choosing alysha surf school is one of my great choice I made here. Lesson was very good. I was little bit scared that I cannot surf but it turned out that was no problem. I had very awesome experience. I was be able to stand on my board since the beginning of my class. The instructor, perry, was good and experienced in surfing. Give good advices and instructions. He helped us catches waves and be able to stand on my board.
