Granny Nannies - A Helping Hand, and a Gentle Heart

When my 84-year-old mother got out of the hospital after having pneumonia, she was extremely weak…read moreand bed-ridden. My adult brother and sisters hoped that we could take care of her on our own until she recovered. We soon realized that although one of us could be with her most of the time, we needed some help, not really medical help because she had visiting nurses and a visiting physician. We need a caring person who could help her get to the bedside commode, keep her hydrated and just try to make her feel better. Our wonderful sister-in-law took it upon herself to try to find caregivers that would care for our mother like us. She scoured the yellow pages and called Granny Nannies. After speaking to the owner, Heidi, she was so impressed that we set up a meeting with an aide for the very next day. We all met Paula, a retired RN, and liked her immediately. She started the next day, sitting by our mother's bedside, helping to make her more comfortable and coaxing her to eat and drink. Then, several days later, we needed help overnight because our mother was very restless and needed someone to be right there with her during the night. Although some of us were coming in from out of town and my siblings who lived there were often spending the night, we were simply not equipped to provide care during the night and then try to work during the day. So, Angelina came to be with our mother so we could sleep. After several weeks, we moved my mother to my sister's house nearby so my sister was there during the night if my mother needed her, although the aide was right there with her. My mother was slowly getting weaker and needed constant attention because she was unable to do anything for herself. Finally, we needed a third aide to be there from 3pm until 10pm to have coverage the full 24-hours a day. So, we called Heidi again and\, like before, she sent another lovely young lady to meet us. Sara began the next day and we were her first clients with Granny Nannies. She was so wonderful with our mother, sat with her and watched the old movies that our mother loved (but couldn't really see or hear too well), helped do everything she could to try to make her more comfortable. She looked up smoothie recipes online to try to come up with something "not sweet" that my mother would drink. The night before our mother died, Sara was talking to us about some candles and room sprays that might help our mother's anxiety or help her sleep better. After hearing her ideas, I immediately got online and ordered some vanilla and lavender pillow sprays that promote sleep. My mother died the next day and her Memorial Mass was a week later. Both Heidi and Sara came to the Mass to pay their respects. I and my entire family can wholeheartedly recommend Granny Nannies if you need help caring for loved ones. When I met Heidi after Mass, she said that she has an elderly mother and she would not hire anyone that she wouldn't have care for her own mother. It was very difficult for us to even consider bringing in outsiders to care for our mother and we knew she would hate having strangers in her house. But after meeting Paula, Angelina and Sara and seeing how they interacted with our mother, we thanked God that we had found them. And our mother was, too, because, weak as she was, she would take their hand and lay it against her cheek and say "thank you."

When my 78 year old mother suffered a catastrophic stroke and entered the hospice phase, we turned…read moreto Granny Nannies for round-the-clock home care. The caregivers could not have been more professional, kind and nurturing. Russ and Heidi handpicked each aide based on experience level and personality, choosing the right fits for my mom and her level of disability. They were there for her 100% and supported our family all the way through her passing. Truly excellent and highly recommended service.

My husband and I enlisted the services of Assisting Hands nearly two years ago when we were in town…read morevisiting my mother and father for a party. Although we are only 3 hours away, we realized during that visit, three hours was way too far to effectively take care of Mom and Dad. Mom has always taken care of everything for Dad. My father has Parkinson's disease. It wasn't until this last visit that my husband and I could clearly see just how badly an extra set of hands was needed for my father's care. We interviewed three Home Health Agencies and without a shadow of a doubt, the entire family chose Assisting Hands. Not only were they competitive from a price standpoint, they were one of the few companies with the credentials we were looking for. We even met the caregivers who would be working with mom and dad before we had to leave to head home! I talk to Linda (Mom and Dad's Caregiver) nearly every night and she feels like a member of our family. I haven't seen Mom and Dad this happy in a very long time. Linda, Mom and Dad, go on outings, the house looks great, mom and dad are well taken care of and my husband and I are actually sleeping at night without worry! I love Assisting Hands and we have sent everyone we know struggling with similar situations to Assisting Hands!

I can't thank Assisting Hands and their staff enough for stepping in to care for my parents when my…read morewife and I relocated out of state. We had the biggest decision of our lives, accept a job that would be an unbelievable opportunity for my wife, the kids and I, or turn down the opportunity to stay in Ohio with Mom and Dad. My parents were excited for us and the new possibilities our my career decision could give my family, but they were in denial about how much care my wife and I were providing by living a block away. Dad suffered a stroke in 2010 and his physical condition had really limited the things he could do. Mom never had a driver's license so my wife took them everywhere during the day and in the evenings, I was responsible for transportation. We never minded caring for them; it became second nature for all of us. I saw a commercial for Assisting Hands Home Care and it felt like the commercial and their services were reaching straight out to us! It was as through the stars were aligned and I was meant to see that on TV. It was on a Saturday but I called the number. I couldn't believe, I actually got a live person who had the ability to come out within a few hours of the call and coordinate a complete plan with all of us. The owner even called me herself later that evening and we talked for almost an hour. We had two weeks to get into temporary housing for my new job yet we had everything figured out within 24 hours. Mom and dad were somewhat resistant but after meeting their caregiver, it was like this was just the way things were meant to be. Although we are further away, wither my wife or myself manages to come up one weekend a month to stay with my parents. They look better than when we were taking care of most of their needs. Although we didn't know it at the time, I think the stress and large responsibility weighed on all of us when it was my wife and I as the sole care takers and in turn, my parents had so much guilt but knew deep down then needed us. Assisting Hands has given us all peace of mind and comfort in their services! I love the company, love what they do and would recommend their services to anyone who needs the help!

This facility apparently does not have qualified staff to provide the level of care of the patients…read morethey are accepting. My 53 yr old sister died there today. She'd gotten very sick two months ago, she had to have a trach and long story short, she was transferred to another facility who, had her transferred to this hell hole of a nursing home! First of all, if Arlington does not have staff around the clock who are skilled at suctioning patients with new trachs then it is ILLEGAL for them to accept a patient who's needs they can't meet! The nurse told my brother that my sister stopped breathing while she was suctioning her, this tells ME, a retired nurse in NM, that the nurse had her airway blocked much too long! Once she stopped breathing they called the paramedics who transferred her to Riverside who pronounced her. DO NOT LET THE HOSPITALS SEND YOUR LOVED ONES TO PLACES LIKE ARLINGTON! Their last survey in 2024, they had MULTIPLE nursing issues, Specialty is also at fault for not ensuring they had staff who could provide the level of care she required.

I did and then I sat in a urine soaked nightgown and bed for 6+ hours. The room was a toasty 78° and I had ask at 2pm to have it lowered. They said they would do it. Never happened. They had nothing for bed sores. And, did I mention that the lights flickered non stop. Staff said they had been that way a long time- so they put me in a room that wasn't 100%. And I wasn't alone. I heard other residents calling out. The call button was a joke. They had no oxygen for me. They had only large size depends. At one point I was told that there was no nurse or boss in the home and I believe it. They could care less about the people.
