I stay here when visiting my son and his family in San Clemente. I've stayed at many B and B'a over the years. None have the perfect combination of fabulous location, amenities including an individual patio for each room, a hostess/owner Freda who can and for me pulled a rabbit out of a hat when a planned family event derailed and Freda learning of the problem jumped in at the last minute to organize a better alternative. This little place is amazing: Frida the owner is a phenomenal chef. She made us a Spanish: Spanish by the sea breakfast, brunch .so much food ,so amazing the rooms are very comfortable. They have to have just about everything you need. she's got really good coffee which is always a plus and she is very attentive. she's travel the world, and she loves to explain it in detail about the food that she makes for you, and her adventures. She can book restaurants for you ,and knows a lot of the owners as my wife and I do too. I had an amazing experience with Frida. She is a top tier chef, fun, sweet, caring and a very accommodating host. She literally goes out of her way to make you feel at home. I highly recommend visiting her if in the area. She has amazing recommendations for your San Clemente experience, and offers great access to local shops and restaurants. She was even kind enough to make us a reservation at Vine (which is phenomenal) while also securing us a free appetizer/dessert. Please go visit in high spirits. Although my stay seemed to be one small problem after another, I recognized that this was quite out of the ordinary. I would definitely stay here again. For me, the biggest selling point is that it's within walking distance of excellent restaurants (5 minute walk), shopping, and the beach (1/2 mile). Plus, Freda is an excellent hostess and was super apologetic about the mishaps during my stay. This old house has only three guest rooms. The one downside is that it is an old house, so there's only enough hot water for one shower before it has to reset. For breakfast, there's pretty much whatever you want, within reason. Each room has its own bathroom and a little patio. Any open space is decorated with pot after pot of plants that all seem to be thriving. read more

I stayed at the Always Inn August 10 thru 12, 2024. It was lovely!! Freda was an amazing host. Her cooking was to die for and she made me feel very welcomed and at home. Her house is filled with gorgeous furniture and impressive original art. The gardens were a tropical oasis and peaceful. I stayed in the Palm Whisper room. It was clean, the bed was very comfortable, all the amenities were great, the bathroom was charming. I drive an oversized SUV and had plenty of room to park and unload. The beach was a short walk down the hill. There were galleries, fantastic restaurants and shops within walking distance. Freda was very knowledgeable of the area and helpful with recommendations. She is also a lovely person and interesting to talk to. I very much enjoyed my stay at her wonderful home and I really liked just hanging out with her too!! I would highly recommend staying at the Always Inn if you're in that area. I myself will be returning! read more

Wonderful B & B in the heart of San Clemente! Hostess/owner is a great communicator to her guests. Freda is very knowledgeable about San Clemente and will provide information if you inquire. Beautiful antiques and decorations throughout B & B. Each bedroom has its own bathroom for privacy. Comfortable living room for guests to sit and visit. We booked a room at the Always Inn for the weekend. Initially we booked the property through AirBnB but the hostess, Freda, called and told us to cancel the booking with them and book it through her. So we did. We choose this place because of its location, included breakfast, included parking, and dog friendly (we stated we would be bringing a dog on the AirBnB reservation, so the hostess knew it in advance). The property is VERY crowded outside with plants everywhere making it difficult to walk to the front door without being attacked by plants, cacti, and chicken wire. All of the outdoor furniture was filthy with leaves and dirt on it so there was really no where clean to sit. The inside is not much better. The inside is so crowded with stuff everywhere making it difficult to move around. Also the pictures on the website do not match the rooms. We were in the ocean dance room which had one queen bed and one twin bed and was decorated with stuff everywhere and even things hanging from the ceiling making it difficult to move around in too. The website says it has amenities of a four star hotel. The amenities consist of large containers of shampoo, conditioner and body wash that has pumps. The toilet did not flush properly and we had to constantly jiggle the handle to get it to quit running. Our door would not lock, the hostess was convinced it was caused by an earthquake. Even the ceiling fan squeaked making it noisy to sleep at night. The first morning, the hostess was cooking sausage that smelled like it was burning, and that is when the smoke alarm/CO alarm went off in our room, which had an opened window. It was only going off in our room and when we opened the door you could smell the smoke from the burning sausage. The hostess said she had problems with the other sensor located in the hallway outside of the kitchen and so she removed it. We pushed the button and got it to stop beeping but the alarm did go off several more times before we left to explore the area after eating breakfast (which did not get served until 10am and was not very good). During our exploration, the host texted us saying the detector in our room is going off again and we needed to leave. We were evicted and not refunded for the second night of our stay because she was convinced we were doing something unscrupulous (we don't smoke/vape) to cause the alarm to repeatedly sound. In summary, the place is so crowded with clutter everywhere, inside and out. The kitchen is filthy, but to be fair, it is a commercial kitchen - not meant for guests to use or even enter. The location was excellent, as described. The included parking space was adequate, but would not fit anything larger than a 4-door sedan. The host was knowledgeable about the area, but was very chatty to the point of being annoying due to repeatedly interrupting conversations among guests. After this experience, I will ever rent a true bed & breakfast with a live-in host again. read more

Freda is the owner of this delightful and unique b n b perfectly located within walking distance of shops dining and beach in the heart of San Clemente. We stayed at this charming B&B for a couple of days over the weekend of the 16th through 18th. The hostess, Freda, was very welcoming and attentive, and immediately made us feel at home. She called us before we arrived to make sure we knew how to find her B&B, and stayed on the phone with me as we were looking for our own parking place which was right outside our door! There were lots of snacks on hand for us to enjoy, and she offered breakfast both mornings. It was delicious and quite a feast! It also included a bowl of freshly-cut fruit and an array of different teas (along with fresh coffee). I wish I could give this place more stars. After two failed attempts at getting a last minute hotel room after a night out on Labor Day weekend, we decided to give it a shot and call Freda at Always Inn San Clemente B&B. To our surprise, a warm and inviting woman answered the phone at 1am and welcomed us to stop in right away. She had one bedroom available - with the last guest that had just recently left and she quickly cleaned the room for us! This was my first time at a bed and breakfast and it was quite honestly a surreal experience. Freda was so warm and angelic and made us feel incredibly special and welcomed. Not to mention the delicious breakfast she had prepared for us as we sat out on one of her beautiful patios. Truly a place filled with so much thought and love. Always Inn quickly became a place that was hard to leave after only being there 10 hours. Freda has an energy unlike anything I've ever experienced and we cannot wait to return!! read more

This place is not just a B&B-- its a place to rest a weary soul and take in nourishment from the beautiful, welcoming host, Frita. She is one of the most incredible people-- open, warm, nurturing. She is an amazing cook-- creating her seasoning spice over a period of FOUR MONTHS!! She puts so much love and care into her food, and into her guests! The B&B is quiet, an easy walk to the beach and pier, surrounded by restaurants and quaint shops. The rooms are equipped with little fridges, there's a great selections of teas, and fresh, clean water available. The bathrooms have sweet little amenities like bath salts, etc, as well as shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. She even has bath robes for the guests which are super soft! The bedding is INCREDIBLE-- temperpedic and it truly envelops you!! There is a lovely front patio that is very peaceful and serene, as well as the side patio where you can sit and chat, and meet other guests for breakfast in the AM-- it feels like a big family vibe at breakfast. Got a voice message that night from Freda telling me the price on Expedia was wrong (room is $249/might, not the expedia rate of $191) and she hopes I can find another place to stay. So went to their website at alwaysinn.com and the price there is even less than Expedia. So I called Freda and was told that both Expedia and the website are wrong. Not sure how this place stays in business and can only figure that with only three rooms to rent out, she can be very SELECTIVE in who she lets stay there. I suppose the moral of the story here is if you want to stay here, you'll need to call to get the pricing because the pricing they're advertising is false. read more

My very spoiled small dog & I spent two of the best nights ever at Always Inn earlier this week. Freda, our hostess and innkeeper, was delightful and our two breakfasts were fantastic - She even made special breakfasts for Brooke. The Inn has a sense of intimacy with only three bedrooms but the common area is inviting and each room has a patio - where we spent most of time, just reading and relaxing. Our room had a small refrigerator and all the essentials needed for your bath. We both fell asleep immediately when curling into the comfortable bed and woke up to the smell of coffee. The Inn is literally less than a block from the shopping area of San Clemente and close to dining (definitely try the Vine, only a few blocks away) and the pier. I came home from my mini getaway relaxed and refreshed and am already checking my calendar for another few days at the Inn in the near future. read more

Clutter & Dust & Mess, Oh My! My girlfriends booked this B&B as a surprise for my 50th Birthday! The website touts, "all the amenities of a four-star hotel, without extra charges" yeah ... not so much!! The home itself is cluttered far beyond "charming". It's more like a home from the show Hoarder's. Trying to navigate through the front room, down the hallway to our bedroom was an obstacle course of chaos. I was terrified I would bump into one of the many "trinkets" and break something. We stayed in the Ocean Dance Bedroom. The photos on the website are VERY outdated - They do not adequately represent the space. The bedding, room setup and decor look NOTHING like the photos online. ***Gosh, I wish we had taken photos** The rug is gone and the floors were disgustingly dirty. Our feet were BLACK from the filth on the floors. We also had grit and dirt stuck to our feet. There were two massive cobwebs spread across two large sections of the ceiling. There is a dressing table with a large mirror shoved in front of a massive hutch (you cannot access) which takes up roughly 4-5 feet of one of the corners in the room making it very difficult to move around. Again, clutter. The bedroom is described as having a queen bed with custom comforter, a queen futon couch/bed; this is not true. The room had a queen bed and a twin bed. The comforter on the queen bed was from a garage sale and the "Tempur-Pedic" mattress was way too soft. The twin bed was creaky and uncomfortable. The refrigerator in the room smelled terribly and was filled with the host's food. The flat screen TV was broken; we could only see 2/3 of the image on the screen. In addition, we were not shown any movie library. The room was several degrees hotter than the rest of the house and there was NO air conditioning. Thank GOD there was a fan. We were offered "fresh" cookies, however they were store bought and dry. There were no Belgian chocolates offered. The snack basket had odd flavored/expired chips and granola bars. We were relegated to our room because there was no other common space to relax. Every corner of this home is filled with dusty, dirty, clutter. On top of all this, she charged $265/night - unbelievable! We could've rented a full home in Dana Point for the same price, on a different website. The ONLY redeeming quality is the location of the property. Outside of that, I would not recommend anyone stay here. Go to the 'other' webite and find a clean, comfortable place to stay. read more

Fabulous stay. Centrally located to shopping, dining and walking distance to the pier and quiet! The bed was firm, clean and warm. Bathroom equipped with anything you might need from Epsom salts to moisturizers. Tub equipped with stream jets for a spa like experience. Loved the eclectic and festive interior dotted with Santas. But now let's talk about the incredible 5 course breakfast made for me from scratch! Freda made toor Dahl with fresh veggies and basmati rice for this vegetarian. Not sure when she had the time from last night to the morning at 9am but it's clear she loves cooking for others. Highly recommended ! You'll be hard pressed to find service and accommodations this personal and of such quality anywhere. And if you do you'll pay a lot more. read more

Frede is certainly the most welcoming host I have ever had, throughout the tour around the Inn we were being offer cookies, fresh fruit and cheesecake. On top of the delicious snacks, Frede showed us where all the ocean gear was that we could take and use like beach mats, Tommy Bahama lounging chairs and even beach towels! The room was such a treat, with a jacuzzi bathtub, a bed that was heavenly with Temper-Pedic foam and to top it off a patio to lounge on after a great day at the beach. To make the visit even better, I woke up to the smell of breakfast being made and a cup of coffee waiting for me with many creamers to choose from. Frede loves her Inn and the visitors she gets so she makes breakfast for her guests. She didn't even have a problem making a delicious 5-course breakfast, from a danish & fresh fruit to home fries and an omelette! The location of Always Inn is just great for everything you need from shopping, public library and so many dining options. It is about a 15 minute walk from the beach! I personally had never been to San Clemente before but I will certainly be returning to visit the beautiful beach in addition to Frede & her best pup Indie! read more

Amazing experience with great memories! Location location! I went on a girl's trip with my mom and two daughters. We had the greatest adventure staying at Always Inn. The owner of Always Inn has connections all over town for specials for specials at restaurants and VIP treatments. I cannot say enough about the unique experience and hospitality that we received. Communication with Frida is great from the moment you make your reservations. She takes care of you like you are family. I felt safe and comfortable. The location can't be beat. You walk out the door and you are in the center of Del Mar Street with access to all the shops and restaurants with a short walk to the trolley that will take you anywhere in town. We had a busy schedule so it was great that food was available from early morning to late at night as we came and went. Always inn is easily accessible due to the location so felt like home as we ran about town. Easy parking! If you want to stay in, there is plenty of patio space surrounded by beautiful gardens. The front door has an easy entry with no stairs which helped with luggage and my mom's bad back. Each day Frida makes a fantastic breakfast but on Sunday she goes all out and makes an amazing brunch. An amazing location, reasonable price, easy parking off the street, lots of snack goodies, and Freda made us feel like we were staying with a best friend. Great place to chill for my husband and couple of nights. Breakfast was home-cooked delicious. A few steps to the playhouse, summer trolley, restaurants, bakeries, sandwich shop, good coffee, the library, art museum, shops, and more. A few more steps (or a short trolley ride) and you are at the pier and beach. We stayed in the Ocean View room. Beds were comfy, and we spent a lot of time in the outdoor patio spaces. We stayed at Always Inn for one night. The room was very small but okay, the breakfast was fine, and Freda was friendly and very chatty. (She did make a strange comment at breakfast about how the Board of Health would not let her reuse cloth napkins, just placemats. . .) During the second afternoon while we were out in town, we decided for personal reasons to cut short our trip and return home, forgoing the fee we'd paid in advance for a second night's stay. When we arrived back at the inn in the late afternoon to retrieve our bags, my husband discovered that our room key had fallen out of his pocket while we were out and that we were locked out of our room. Freda was out and both her phone mailboxes were full. We finally reached her. When she arrived home awhile later, she tried the extra keys she had, but said she had no master key and would need to wait for a locksmith. During this long and stressful wait, she repeated that she had only one key for each room. I suggested gently that she might want to have an extra one made. Her demeanor changed dramatically in a disturbing way! She became instantly defensive and angry, declaring several times that she runs a 3-guest-room bed and breakfast, and that the zoning laws allow her to have only one key per room, and she was not about to break the law for us! She loudly chastised my husband for losing the key. The locksmith finally arrived and we were most relieved to leave -- after an experience that was beyond inconvenient, potentially dangerous, and eye-opening! read more

We booked and paid on hotels.com. the owner called us on the day of our arrival, and said she would no longer accept a one night stay., which left us very stranded. She initially said 2 night min and then she changed it to 3 nights. And had a lame excuse why she was canceling our paid and guaranteed reservation at the last minute. She was blatantly lying to us! I had read all the great reviews here on Yelp, about the Inn keeper Freda, and her great cooking, and was really looking forward to an authentic B&B experience. Unfortunately, that's not what we got at the Always Inn in San Clemente. I had booked our room through Priceline. When we arrived we were not greeted by Freda, but by a house-sitting host. Seems Freda was away traveling in India. Our guest-host had no idea we had a reservation. Lucky for me, I had my receipt with me, and that there was a room available. Once she got over the fact that she had another guest to deal with that Freda had not told her about, our guest-host showed us our room and around the Inn. NOT A GREAT START! The Inn is adorable! Very beach chic, with nice local-artist artwork on the walls, and lush patios surrounding the Inn. Our room was small, but clean and very artsy! A sliding door opened onto one of the relaxing patios. The drawbacks - it has one of the smallest bathrooms I've ever seen, including the child-size Jacuzzi tub! Also, the Inn backs up to a public parking lot that is brightly lit all night long. Couple that with the fact that the window blinds are missing a few slates, and you've got bright lights coming in your room all night long. Black-out blinds are really needed here. Our guest-host left the Inn for the night. I had asked her what time she was serving breakfast in the morning and she told me 9:00am. She showed back up the next morning around 9:00am and then began cooking. She finally served breakfast at 10:00am. I had been looking forward to the breakfast as other reviewers wrote that Freda was a wonderful cook. Our guest-host was competent at eggs, potatoes and ham, but it was certainly nothing to brag about. Neither were the grocery-store bought muffins. DISAPPOINTING You can't beat the location of this Inn. It is in walking distance of the ocean, and kitty-corner to downtown San Clemente.! However, if you are looking for quite and tranquility, the Inn is a bit too close to all the night-life and action. But if you want to party at the beach, the Inn is perfect, including beach towels and all the sunscreen you could ask for! It's a shame that Freda left her Inn so poorly managed, including the reservations. While her guest-host did try to be friendly and accommodating, it was as obvious as her showing up late in the morning, that she was just not into it. read more

We've always preferred staying at B&Bs over conventional hotels when we travel but we've never been at one where we've felt like we were actually in someone's home. Freda, the owner and consummate hostess of the amazing Always Inn, welcomed us like we were longtime friends, no, more like family! She has a wealth of knowledge about the area and gladly shared it with us to make sure that we took in as many of the wonderful local attractions as possible. The location was great because is right at the heart of San Clemente major street close to all the restaurants and bars and of course a short walk to the beach. We do a ton of traveling and I must say, this was probably one of the nicest stays ever, mind you I do a bit of traveling. We had a warm welcome by Freda and her friend. The room was very cozy and the bed super comfortable. There was goodies at the house and fresh fruit. Freda was extremely hospitable which is why I can see why her guests return. I can tell you I will definitely be returning to this place soon. I woke up to the smell of coffee and some excellent smell of Freda cooking in the kitchen. I had a seat on the veranda as she served us fresh fruit and yogurt, a delicious warm pastry, homemade breakfast burrito and her amazing home potatoes. Not to mention her chorizo bake and fresh guacamole salsa. I can tell you this might be the first 5 star place Ive truly ever stayed at. I will be planning our next trip here very soon. On the Thursday before Memorial Weekend we decided to go away. My husband went on dogtrekker.com because we wanted to bring our German Shepherd. He happened upon Always Inn and gave Freda a call, she had one room available and we jumped on it. Neither one of us knew what to expect since we have never stayed at a bed and breakfast. Well it exceeded our expectations. The inn is quaint, clean, romantic and has so much charm. The room has a patio and comes with its own parking space. The location couldn't have been better it's close to the beach, restaurants and great shops. A very nice woman came in the morning to make everyone breakfast, Tia was fantastic and attentive to our needs. If you're looking for a place with many amenities I would recommend Always Inn San Clemente. We plan on going back when we need a nice getaway. read more

Completely overpriced and gouging. The house smelled of mildew. Breakfast jam had mold inside the jar, apples were spoiled, toasted bread was hard as a rock, with skim on the surface and beverage undrinkable - it was discovered that the milk/creamer expired almost 2 months prior. There were clothes, a rodent deterrent bag, spider, and dirt behind the dresser and bed. There were no comfortable chairs to sit on in the common room, in the bedroom, or on the patio. There was no dining table to accommodate 6 - 8 people visiting. The queen bed was really a double and listed to one side so one was very uncomfortable all night as you rolled into one another and/or almost out of the bed. The bed was tucked into the wall and you could almost not squeeze through on the one side. All the bathroom amenities, such as soap and shampoo, in the shower/bath were used items. I recently stayed here with my wife for 5 nights at a cost of just under $1,000. The owner, Freda, is a very nice person. The location could not be any better. Our room was small and cluttered. It was hard to move around. Thankfully we had a patio, but that was also cluttered. The bathroom was tiny and had a tiny mirror that was so low I had to squat to use it. There was a mirror in the bedroom but it was so dirty we could barely use it. Also, hot water came out of the sink but the shower handle seemed to be intentionally restricted so you could only get Luke warm water at best. My understanding is that breakfast is included at a B&B but I read other reviews that said there is an extra $15 per meal charge. I don't know because after seeing the kitchen we refused to eat there. It was absolutely disgusting (see pictures). There was even food stored outside. Bottom line is that the location is fantastic and Freda is nice, but I would never stay here again. read more
