Although my stay seemed to be one small problem after another, I recognized that this was quite out of the ordinary. I would definitely stay here again. For me, the biggest selling point is that it's within walking distance of excellent restaurants (5 minute walk), shopping, and the beach (1/2 mile). Plus, Freda is an excellent hostess and was super apologetic about the mishaps during my stay. This old house has only three guest rooms. The one downside is that it is an old house, so there's only enough hot water for one shower before it has to reset. For breakfast, there's pretty much whatever you want, within reason. Each room has its own bathroom and a little patio. Any open space is decorated with pot after pot of plants that all seem to be thriving.

One of Always Inn's fabulous patios.

I stayed at the Always Inn August 10 thru 12, 2024. It was lovely!! Freda was an amazing host. Her cooking was to die for and she made me feel very welcomed and at home. Her house is filled with gorgeous furniture and impressive original art. The gardens were a tropical oasis and peaceful. I stayed in the Palm Whisper room. It was clean, the bed was very comfortable, all the amenities were great, the bathroom was charming. I drive an oversized SUV and had plenty of room to park and unload. The beach was a short walk down the hill. There were galleries, fantastic restaurants and shops within walking distance. Freda was very knowledgeable of the area and helpful with recommendations. She is also a lovely person and interesting to talk to. I very much enjoyed my stay at her wonderful home and I really liked just hanging out with her too!! I would highly recommend staying at the Always Inn if you're in that area. I myself will be returning!

Booked a room here through Expedia. Got a voice message that night from Freda telling me the price on Expedia was wrong (room is $249/might, not the expedia rate of $191) and she hopes I can find another place to stay. So went to their website at alwaysinn.com and the price there is even less than Expedia. So I called Freda and was told that both Expedia and the website are wrong. Not sure how this place stays in business and can only figure that with only three rooms to rent out, she can be very SELECTIVE in who she lets stay there. I suppose the moral of the story here is if you want to stay here, you'll need to call to get the pricing because the pricing they're advertising is false.

Fabulous stay. Centrally located to shopping, dining and walking distance to the pier and quiet! The bed was firm, clean and warm. Bathroom equipped with anything you might need from Epsom salts to moisturizers. Tub equipped with stream jets for a spa like experience. Loved the eclectic and festive interior dotted with Santas. But now let's talk about the incredible 5 course breakfast made for me from scratch! Freda made toor Dahl with fresh veggies and basmati rice for this vegetarian. Not sure when she had the time from last night to the morning at 9am but it's clear she loves cooking for others. Highly recommended ! You'll be hard pressed to find service and accommodations this personal and of such quality anywhere. And if you do you'll pay a lot more.

This is Indie the mascot of Always Inn and Frede's best buddy!

Established in 1953, the Beachcomber in is quintessential California bungalow motor hotel. It's unique placement on a San Clemente bluff, with panoramic views of the pier and coast are nothing short of stunning. The rooms have full kitchens, king beds, sofa beds and patios with Adirondack chairs, in case being inside, staring through an enormous picture window just doesn't cut it. The staff obviously knows what a special property this is and there is great pride in the presentation and up keep of the grounds. Friendly, welcoming faces morning, noon and night. Because this is a vintage property, maintaining its original build and charm, it does not conform to modern accessibility requirements. Some may find the rooms small compared to modern, chain hotels, but I found everything cozy, comfortable and - dare I say - sumptuous! Given the hospitality of the staff, I'm sure they would do all they could to accommodate any guest. In addition to the amazing evening sunset views of the Pacific, a plus for me, was the Amtrak Surfliner passing through, down below the bluff. Paul Simon may sing, 'Everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance', but I love the sound of a train close by! I find it very soothing and romantic. After the sun has set, it's time to gather around the large fire pit for easy conversations with fellow guests, maybe while you wait for your steaks to grill on one of their guest use BBQs. A lovely, relaxing way to ease into the night. We forced ourselves to leave the property and stretch our legs, walk the pier and roam the shops of nearby Avenida Victoria. But for REAL shopping in San Clemente, we took advantage of the free hop on/hop off trolley that runs seasonally and weekends(see separate review) that picks up just below the Beachcomber, at the San Clemente train stop. Weleft our car parked in our allotted parking space (1 parking space for those staying in Villas #1-12). Really, Beachcomber had everything we needed to settle in for a few nights and, yes, just "BREATHE". Cheers! "CC"

The staff was welcoming and very friendly throughout the stay. I booked a king bed with harbor views and the room and bathroom were good sizes, with lots of room to move around. The only downsides were the walls are a little thin so I could hear the customer in the next room coughing, and the breakfast was not that good. But there are tons of great restaurants within walking and driving distance, so I would recommend going there. It's also 4 minutes drive from the harbor if you plan to do whale/ dolphin watching. Leslie also informed us of the complimentary bikes to use if we wanted to explore the town and how we were just in time to enjoy the complimentary wine and cheese from 4-5:30 in the common area. We grabbed our free bubbly, the vanilla bath salts for my wife to enjoy later, and proceeded to enjoy the cheese and assorted treats on the outdoor patio overlooking Dana Point. No better way to unwind! Pro tip: NEVER EVER SKIP THE FRESH BAKED COOKIES! The property is the perfect size to remain quaint like a bed and breakfast but big enough that you don't feel obligated to know each person coming and going. I would admit being in our mid 40's, we were on the younger side of guests during our stay, but this was a welcome surprise for us as we were looking for a quiet getaway for the evening for our 9 year wedding anniversary. The room was 212 which is an ADA accessible room but this I believe was provided at the special request of having a bathtub for my wife who values her baths on her getaways! The room faces the parking lot but this is a small sacrifice for what the true payoff was which was the special request... The giant jacuzzi tub which did not disappoint. It was large enough to fit two adults (not that we tried or anything *wink wink). The jets worked great and my wife raved about them. The room came with luxurious robes and slippers and all bath products were either local or unique brand. The room also came with a fireplace that was gas which started with the flip of a light switch. Another beautiful touch. It is always hard to find a bed that is comfortable enough while away from home as we are spoiled by our sleep number at home but this bed did the trick (which most chain or corporate hotels cannot accomplish!). The linens were soft and the room came with extra pillows and blankets on hand without having to ask for more. The complementary breakfast buffet in the morning was not your standard spread. It felt more refined and focused on the details. It was not your scrambled eggs from powder. It was two sunny side up eggs cooked to perfection. It wasn't generic underripe fruit, it was perfectly ripe fruit with an assortment of sides. My wife raved about the yogurt and toppings as did I about the oatmeal and toppings. Overall this could not have been a better short 1 night getaway for my wife and I to enjoy away from the hectic everyday life. It truly felt like we slowed down time and the blue lantern Inn accomplished all we needed in having a successful start to our anniversary celebrations.

This time, my family took a trip to Dana Point over the 4th of July holiday weekend…read more I heard that one of my brothers had booked our hotel in advance, and this was the place we stayed. He reserved a suite, so it had a separate living room and a very spacious bedroom. The bathroom also featured a whirlpool bathtub. Lately, I've been completely hooked on the FIFA World Cup, so as soon as we arrived on Friday, July 3rd, I had a great time watching the Argentina vs. Cabo Verde match. The suite had two TVs--one in the living room and another in the bedroom--which made it very convenient and comfortable to watch the game. Breakfast was included with our stay, so we enjoyed breakfast every morning on the first floor during our two-night stay. The breakfast selection was quite good, including waffles, bagels, donuts, sliced bread, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, yogurt, and a variety of coffee options such as mocha, latte, espresso, regular coffee, and decaf coffee. While we were having breakfast, I noticed there wasn't any cream cheese for the bagels. I asked one of the staff members who was restocking the breakfast items, and both the male and female staff members were incredibly friendly and quickly brought some out for us. We really appreciated their excellent service, and my mom left them a tip afterward. Those were the highlights of our stay, but there were also a few things that could have been better. First, as soon as we checked into our room, there was a strange smell inside. Because of that, we kept the balcony door and the windows open most of the time to air the room out. Second, after checking in on July 3rd, we naturally expected our room to be cleaned the following day. Before leaving in the morning to enjoy the recreational activities around Dana Point, my mom even left a $10 tip in the room for housekeeping. However, when we returned that afternoon, the room hadn't been cleaned at all. My brother called the front desk, and they told us there was no housekeeping service on the 4th of July because it was a holiday. We've stayed at many hotels while traveling over holiday weekends, but this was the first time we'd ever been told that there was no housekeeping because it was Independence Day. Later that afternoon, before heading out again to ride the local trolley, I asked another front desk employee about the housekeeping service. Instead of saying there was no housekeeping because of the holiday, the employee asked for our room number and then asked whether we had requested housekeeping that morning. I explained that we hadn't requested it in the morning but had called about an hour earlier, and the room still hadn't been serviced. The employee told us they could at least replace our towels, so we thanked them. As a result, we ended up sleeping for two nights on the same bed without the sheets ever being changed. Another issue I noticed was that the bathroom exhaust fan vent was extremely dirty. Most guests probably wouldn't notice it unless they looked closely, but it stood out to me right away. I felt it was worth mentioning. Those were the two main disappointments during our stay. On the positive side, the hotel's location was absolutely fantastic. Dana Point Harbor Beach was only about a five-minute walk away, making it incredibly easy to get to the beach. Directly across the street, there were plenty of restaurants and shops, including Starbucks, McDonald's, pizza places, Thai restaurants, and many other dining options. The location truly couldn't have been better. I later heard that my brother had considered booking a Marriott or another hotel, but he ultimately chose this one because it offered a spacious suite and was the closest hotel to the beach. Last year in May, we stayed at Murrieta Hot Springs. Although it was quite expensive at around $1,000 per night, the hotel was exceptionally clean, housekeeping was provided even during the holiday, and both the views and overall atmosphere were outstanding. This hotel's location was truly excellent, but I do wish the housekeeping and overall cleanliness had been better. That said, every staff member we encountered was friendly and welcoming, which definitely left us with a positive impression. cf) Parking is $25 per night at this hotel.
