Between getting into the car, to the car ride itself, to the doctor taking her away from me on a slippery floor while I have to wait in the car, it's always a super stressful event - for both of us. It was getting to the point, however, that a vet visit was a necessity in order to get a prescription for her preventative medications, so I went on a hunt to find a visiting vet. Dr. de Jong (who introduced herself as "Kathy" - how friendly is that!) was very responsive to my messages and came out pretty quickly after I got in touch with her. Her nurse, Jill, was also a wonderful blessing. Both of them were just so kind and thorough, and did I mention kind? Friendly. Gentle (literally, like the name of her business!). They explained everything they were going to do before they did it, asked permission to place their items here or there, and were overall exceedingly pleasurable to deal with. They performed annual exams on all my pets, took blood, collected stool samples, administered vaccines, and did it all while trying to keep the pets as calm and comfortable as possible. What normally would be a days-long recovery from a traumatic vet visit, with my senior dog limping from tired muscles, and my cat rubbing his nose raw on the cat carrier, took only an hour. I called Yellow Springs last Friday morning after being in the ER the night before, Dr K called me back promptly and advised me to come in ASAP. Daisy was there all day, catheterized, given IV fluids and blood work, and diagnosed with pancreatitis. The entire staff stayed late, helped carry my 75 pound dog to my car, and Dr K called the vet at the hospital, sent records and helped navigate my dogs admission. They didn't do all of this for free, but they were efficient, compassionate and quick to help in my time of vet emergency. My sweet girl Daisy is now at home and doing great. Other trainers got nowhere. We were told to put the horse down because he was "unfixable". Then we found Sam! And the horse is now safe to handle, predictable, and seems much happier now that he knows what to expect. Sam employs a variety of techniques. I like that he still goes to the clinics of other trainers, so he's always getting fresh ideas. He is very good with solving problems. He does groundwork but he also trains for riding and driving. He is also one of the bravest trainers i've met: willing to ride any horse I bring him without a complaint. If the horse is really misbehaving, I've never seen Sam loose his temper. Sam isn't the cheapest guy around but he's also not the most expensive. And compared to the cost of feeding a horse for months & months while buyers ignore a horse with some behavioral issues -- it's money well spent. He also does single sessions and several times a year he does day-long clinics. He's always dealt with me fairly and honestly. He's also very open and honest with me, and he'll tell me if a horse might not be good for the job we had in mind for him/her. For this area, I think he's one of the best trainers around. I will continue to bring horses to him.
