I was extremely disappointed in my experience with Dr. Pema. I recently adopted an 11yr old cat with hyperthyroidism. I've just begun raw feeding my other pets and when I adopted Kali she was being fed Hill's y/d for thyroid. She was skeletal. Maybe 5lbs. She was starving to death bc she hated the food. I decided to try her on raw food and take her to Dr. Pema hoping that she would have a solution for Kali that didn't involve feeding her that garbage and watching her waste away. When Dr Pema called me for Kali's appt. she suggested an $1800-$2200 treatment. I explained to her that that was much more than we could afford. Then she proceeded to explain that if we chose to take the medication route it would ultimately cost about the same but over a longer period of time and the medication would eventually become toxic. Labs would have to be done regularly (1 month-3month-6months and on) at $200 a pop. I don't have an issue with her diagnosis. However, when I said "We can't afford that. We don't have that kind of money." Her response was "You don't have a choice." WHAT?! Who treats clients this way? It was cold and nasty and really not considering what is best for the pet AND the client. I kept hoping she would show some compassion and kindness. She just said that's all the options available. Then silence as a stammered to wrap my head around this. Her next icy response was "So do you want me to do the labs?" There was no discussion about moving forward with raw food, potential homeopathic or just how to keep her comfortable. No kindness offered. It was either spend the money or nothing. I feel that she had no grasp on her clients financial constraints. She didn't care about what we could afford. Many people will say if you can't afford to provide proper vet treatment you shouldn't have a pet. This is over and above typical vet treatments. We were made to feel like bad people because we weren't able to spend $$$ on specialized treatment on an 11yr old. I hope you have a better experience than I did but in my opinion this is terrible and cruel way to treat families. read more

I want to say up front that this review is based only on a phone call and billing and not related to in person or pet healthcare services provided. My review in no way is intended to dissuade anyone from trying their services and only serves as info on my experience. Recently, I emailed this facility with questions related to one of their therapies as related to my dog who shows diagnostic signs for Cancer. I was happy to receive a prompt email from Dr Pena noting I should schedule a call with her, which I was happy to do. I called the next day and lucky for me they said they had an appt for a phone meeting with the Dr the following morning. I was booked and received a straightforward confirmation email (attached). This is the 2nd cancer tumor my dog has had in the past year so I've seen my fair share of surgeons, oncologists, vets and specialists even including a recent well known herbalist in Australia. That said, Dr. Pena's "phone-side" manner in comparison came across as apathetic and minimally consultative. I say that not to be nit-picky but anyone who has dealt with navigating treatment options and decisions with a pet diagnosed with a serious disease will understand the fragility of one's emotions and how immensely helpful and comforting it is to receive feedback and guidance from a passionate and compassionate vet practitioner who makes you feel as if they would be in the fight with you for your pet's life should you choose to use their services. Basically, I asked a few questions and she provided info on the treatments she offers. I asked for costs for a few of them and she said she didn't know off hand. Odd, considering she's the lead practitioner but no biggie. Yet, before I hung up was where things went left. Literally, as we were hanging up she said someone from her office would call me so I could pay the consult fee. I was like "there's a fee for this call?". Mind you nowhere on their website mentions phone consult fees, it was not mentioned in my confirmation email (attached) and at no point during scheduling did anyone mention this fee. Now I'll pause right here to say I have zero problem with any healthcare professional charging for their time...in person or by phone. But this fee ended up being $75. For 15 minutes! Let's just break this down for illustration. The salary for the president of the Unites States is $400k. That amounts to $192.31 per hour. As another example, I have previously taken my dog to a leading Oncologist in the area and was charged $225 for an in-person 1.5 hour consultation. That amounts to $150 per hour. Dr. Pena's $75 for 15 minutes phone consult fee amounts to $300/hour or $624k annually. I was simply floored. All of my pet's health and treatment expenses are out-of-pocket so this seemingly frivolous rate was particularly upsetting. Upon complaining to the staff member, I will say she was extremely kind and understanding and noted she would speak to the billing person and call me back. I have not received a call again which is much appreciated. However, I'm immensely disappointed because this "gotcha" and excessive fee attempt shook my faith in their financial motives and pricing policies. It was also disappointing because they are one of a tiny few facilities that offer the holistic treatments I have interest in. I had visited their website for many months and was so excited about all they seemed to offer and this experience overall just left me uncomfortable. I know there are many positive reviews here so I truly hope my experience was a one off and not representative of their overall services or practices. I have not completely ruled out giving them a try as like I said, they do offer many unique holistic services that are not easy to find. But I will definitely need to give it some careful thought beforehand. I truly encourage anyone considering bringing their pet here to give them a try for yourself as you may have a totally different experience. Read all the reviews for balance and please do not just focus on mine. But it was important for me to write this review because as someone who works in healthcare myself, I believe medical facilities should feel a sense of duty to be honest and fair in their pricing and billing practices. Particularly veterinary facilities where a large segment of customers are paying out of pocket and often feel a sense of desperation to save/help their pet medically. I am a slow convert to "food is medicine" for dogs. Ironically, I am vegan and I tend to buy organic food for my human body. Someone who regularly cared for my toy poodle-mix when I traveled three or four years ago fed my dog raw meat. He seemed to respond well to it; his hind leg that he often held folded up near his torso was used more for walking. My dog certainly liked the raw food better than the kibble I was giving him. I took my dog to see Dr. Pema after meeting a few people who raved about her. Shortly after switching to her practice, colitis became an issue for my dog. I gave him supplements that Dr. Pema recommended. Unfortunately, the colitis and periods of low appetite kept returning. Exasperated, I asked Dr. Pema what else, if anything, could be done. She gave him a thorough food intolerance analysis. We discovered that every single commercial product that I was buying for my dog from the freezer of pet stores had some ingredient that he could not tolerate. I now buy meat from a grocery store and cook his food using a recipe that Dr. Pema provided me. The colitis gone. His appetite is usually strong. A bonus: Since I began making my dog's food, I have noticed that my dog bites on his feet much, much less. I think his skin is less irritated. My old dog is truly old - maybe 17 years old. When I found the same product on Chewy for half the price -- I called to ask if they had overcharged me by mistake. Their receptiionist, Jessica, said, "Yes, our prices will always be higher." You have no idea how many phone calls I've made, looking for a vet that has DAP. This place, at my friend's recommendation, offers that. Their customer service, especially Julie/Julia, is superb. I've never encountered friendly and knowledgeable front desk people until today. I received my quotes immediately and feel very comfortable going to their clinic, after having all my questions answered. I'm just ecstatic to find a practice that do not push me to neuter and inject my beloved boy unknown foreign particles. We have been coming to HVH since 2016 and I would not trust my dogs with any other vet. The whole staff there is amazing and Dr Pema is not only a gifted vet but she is also a compassionate animal lover and a Buddhist nun. I honestly can't understand the bad reviews. I know Dr Pema is can be a bit direct, and to the point, and I guess to some, that may be perceived as cold or uncaring but it could not be further from the truth. Perhaps she is more comfortable interacting with the animals in her care, then she is with the owners but as you get to know her, Dr Pema is a very warm, and loving person. She is extremely intuitive and has saved more that one of our dog's lives over the years. With her guidance and nutritional advice, we actually come to the vet less now because our animals are healthier. I see some people complain about the fees but holistic is always more expensive. Most vets keep you waiting for an hour and then barely spend any time with you. They see four or five patients an hour, whereas Dr Pema sees only one or two. I love that Dr Pema does not try and push a lot of vaccines and flea poisons on me too. Conventional vets have no clue about nutrition and underlying causes of disease and they just give out prescriptions to treat symptoms. When all is said and done, I honestly don't even think she is more expensive than other vets when you factor everything in. She has so many more tools in her toolbox like ozone therapy and acupuncture. Please ignore any negative reviews and do your dog or cat a favor and switch to Dr Pema and a holistic approach. read more

She is doing more for my ill cat than the traditional vets that he has seen, but I brace myself for appointments. I, and more importantly, my nervous Pomeranian, love this practice! I've been fortunate to have all my visits in person and the practice feels like home to me. I have integrative health training and lots of experience in functional/holistic treatments so it's important for me to have a vet that can use this approach with my pet. The office feels peaceful, the minute you walk in the door, and the techs (especially Robyn) put my dog at ease. I've been sick for a couple years and not able to work so money is always a driving factor in what I can do for my dog. I found Dr. Pema to be very respectful of my financial constraints in treating my dog and extend the kindness of a discount (no other vet has ever done that) as well as conservative treatment ( my dog was drinking and peeing a lot so we did minimal testing, started a supplement and took a wait and see approach instead of ordering every test under the sun.) I was clear about my financial limits upfront. The same happened for a brief visit when Bobby scratched a cornea. I was charged a brief visit fee and the med, which was a kindness extended to me. Again, I've been in financially difficult situations before and no other vet has even discounted me a dime. She was also incredibly kind to me and compassionate in holding space for what was going on with me- and it was a lot! Bobby got a free mini massage during once visit and he gave Robyn big googoo eyes and vocalized the whole time! Robyn is one of Bobby's favorite people in the whole world. While others have found her delivery harsh, my experience is that in person it's more that she is introverted- quiet, thoughtful and to the point but not unkind. It's very difficult to separate the energy of a room into who is directing what to whom when it's working. All my visits have worked- vet, vet tech, animal and me connected over providing a sense of ease to Bobby and doing what's best for him. Maybe it's all about my dog and nothing to do with me, who cares? Robyn is a talent and I wish I could afford her more than once a year. She does a combination of energy and body work that is nothing short of transformative. I take him because he was injured by a large breed puppy a couple years back and his back seems to bother him sometimes. After a session with Robyn, he is so happy and relaxed. I wish I could see Robyn, LOL I wish I had video taped it because my quiet dog basically sings the whole time. I have never encountered a group of individuals in a professional setting that are so unprofessional. I am in shock at what I just witnessed from the staff of this veterinary clinic. It's a rainy, cold day, I am hurrying from my car to get inside with my dog and the moment I open the door, I am faced with not one not two not three but four staff members who immediately were raising their voice at me. My dog is a very sensitive dog and so that startled her immediately. They yelled "The lobby isn't open! You can't come in here! You're not allowed!" I said, "but I have an appointment at 11:30." They yelled "That doesn't matter!! You have to sit in your car and call us until we come get you!" OK, that is fine if they had told me that in a professional manner. Why were they all yelling? What was the reason for all of the hostility? I paused, looked down at my sweet dog, and said "you know I think I'm good because this feels hostile." Shockingly, they continued raising their voices so I met their energy and said, "you are rude for absolutely no reason!" Then one of the older techs pointed her finger at me and start lunging at the door as I walked out. That was one of the most bizarre experiences I've ever had. Everyone wants the staff members at the veterinary clinic you trust with your most beloved, pets, to be kind and understanding and certainly not yell, but yet I was faced with raised voices, pointing fingers, and angry faces. Please don't take your pet here, I'm so disappointed. If you are sensitive to bad energy, this is definitely not the place. It has very dark energy which is so disappointing for a place that is supposed to have holistic roots. read more

Dr Pema and her staff were truly a life changing experience for our pet and family. My wife and I were desperate. We took in a beautiful Frenchie puppy, Tucker, from a terrible situation. Right from the start, we encountered problem after problem. First it was Fleas and Intestinal parasites... and the multiple times a day diarrhea from intestinal parasites and their treatments... went to two vets, who could never quite get it right... then started the food sensitivities/allergies, and dermodex mites (which were misdiagnosed as allergies to foods) causing facial swelling and lethargy... you name it, we went through it. In the first 7 weeks of having our little guy, we went to two different traditional vets and a dermatologist. After being misdiagnosed, under/over medicated, given 21 days of anti parasite medications, 4 different antibiotic treatments, Allergy injections, and I hate to say this, but the position APOQUEL (black box warning for puppies because it kills them) by another vet for what they thought was severe allergies, we had enough. We went ahead and took Tucker to a dermatology vet (extremely good practice & physicians btw in Balt Co) who diagnosed Tucker with Dermodex mites. At that point, I knew I needed to get Tucker the help and support of a Holistic vet, who takes in consideration the entire clinical picture and uses both traditional medicine, supplements, and food to get him better. Tucker was very ill to say the least. He had lost the fur on his body, had facial swelling, itched like crazy, and has secondary bacterial skin infections. On our first visit, we were greeted at the door, our staff immediately connected with us and our puppy, and Dr Pema got right to work. She listened to our concerns, thoroughly examined Tucker, and came up with a comprehensive plan. She helped us ID his food allergies, got us started on Answers Raw diet, and started treatment for mites. Within 30 days, we had a completely new dog. He is vibrant, full of energy, and such a joy in our life. We were truly amazed by his transformation. We have now been seeing Dr Pema now for 9 months. Each time has been a terrific experience! I have nothing but 100% faith in Dr Pema's ability to heal our ailing pets. I first brought my cat in to see Dr. Pema when Juliette was within days of dying from kidney failure. She was ice cold and didn't even complain about going to a vet! After a thorough and careful examination, Dr Pema said there was a treatment we could try but it would require long term care for her to recover. It didn't involve surgery or harsh drugs with all the side effects, so I decided to try it. When they drew her blood for the first treatment, it was dark brown and the texture was thick like sludge. Dr Pema and the staff literally saved her life. That was 3 years ago. That almost dead cat is a lively, fun creature who enjoys playing with birdies on a string and sleeping under the covers with her people. Her blood is bright red and flows normally when she gets her intermittent treament. This is the only clinic to offer this treatment for 200 miles, and if I had not found them, my kitty would have died. I think the costs are very fair compared to other vets that I have gone to! No one has ever suggested any testing or treatment that was not absolutely necessary. The whole staff cares deeply for both the pets and their humans. They are compassionate and highly ethical, but let's be real: if they weren't also really good at their jobs, that wouldn't matter at all. My friend recently went for an appointment with Dr. Pema and I am outraged at how she was treated. Dr Pema gave her no time, did not answer questions and added supplements that were not requested nor explained. Dr. Pema, without explanation, also informed the client that she would need to take her dog to the dental vets. She gave her no time, and over $400.00 later. This is outrageous. AND as my friend was waiting in her car, she observed Dr. Pema kindly engaging with another and her puppy. Why didn't my friend receive the same? What is wrong with you Dr. Pema? Dr. Pema is an amazing veterinarian. My two cockapoos absolutely adore her and her loving staff. What I love about her: She is trained in typical Vet medicine and also many alternative modalities so she is able to offer alternatives to just prescription drugs and also many methods of palliative care (comfort and healing) than other vets. I often find I save money in the long run because she does not jump to the worst case scenarios. I've been to vets who run every test in the world to rule out all possible scenarios because they were not willing to simple comfort me and offer their experience and expertise. I came to Holistic Veterinary Healing after my dog was diagnosed with Lymphoma in January of 2015. I did not want to do Chemo so I sought a holistic vet that would offer immune supportive therapies. I can not speak highly enough of Dr Raichura and the entire staff at HVH! With nutritional therapy, Chinese herbs and ozone therapy, my dog is not only still alive 6 months later, but he is continuing to improve and he is energetic and happy. He used to get really anxious when visiting the vet and that is not the case anymore. The office is so calm and welcoming and my dog is very comfortable there. The entire staff is amazing from the front desk, to the vet techs and the doctors. I never have to wait more than 5 minutes because they don't book an appointment every 10 minutes. I also like that you are in the treatment room with your dog the entire time and they never take your pet behind closed doors for any reason. I was even allowed to be in the room for an ultrasound. I am now a big believer that holistic is the way to go, in fact I was so impressed with the great care that I have switched all my dogs to HVH. A year ago my cat, named Artu, starting having some very scary breathing attacks, my husband and I panicked and took our little guy to a veterinary, who with out even diagnosing the problem the doctor prescribed him with some kind of ointment to avoid mosquito bites, being that Artu is an indoor cat, I didn't trust this diagnosis or the treatment so after some searching I found Holistic Veterinary Healing in Germantown. After 45 minutes in traffic with an angry cat meowing in the car I arrived to the clinic to find a beautiful Zen office where we were warningly greeted, and this is when I found out my cat has a "double personality"! The same cat that had been hissing and growling at the other clinics was now completely relaxed, curious and even sweet. Doctor Kitty took her time examining him and asking me questions and gave me some great advice on diet changes, I am very happy to say that Artu's breathing attacks completely subsided and never came back : ) Now comes the second part: About two weeks ago my parents in law's cat, named Theo, started throwing up so we tried changing his food from wet to dry and from dry to wet without any results, Theo besides being a beautiful and very loving cat has had an on and off rash for which the conventional veterinary had prescribed a spray with steroids, of all things, Two days ago we took Theo to the Holistic Veterinary Healing clinic and once again the experience was great. I am so glad to have found Robin and Dr. Pema! My 8-yr old lab mix received prolotherapy following an ACL injury. I had never heard of it before, but after Dr. Pema explained it I decided to give it a try. The prolotherapy, combined with several massage therapy sessions with Robin, have made a HUGE different in my dog's quality of life. She is using the injured leg again, her energy and mood is so much better, and she is acting like a puppy again in many good ways. If you think it is nuts to get a massage for your dog, think again. Robin was able to build trust with my dog over time, so my dog would allow her to massage the areas with the most tension. It was amazing to watch my dog visibly relax and experience happiness during her sessions with Robin. I think the healing touch and care Robin gave really aided my dog's recovery. About a year ago I began researching holistic veterinary practices. I found this practice and knew that if I ever needed a holistic vet - a vet for something other than annuals and vaccinations - this practice would be my choice. Well my need arose in the form of an oral tumor. I called and made an appointment. From the moment we walked into the space to meeting Dr. Pema my experience but more importantly Gulliver's experience was wonderful and at last peaceful. The second visit was even more exceptional than the first. Gulliver allowed Dr. Pema to open his mouth and look in and to use a stethescope. This has never happened. There have been muzzles and techs shaking in corners. I have met three outstanding veterinarians in my life in terms of their ability to interact with my pets and really know them. Dr. Raichura has been my cats' veterinarian for the past 3 years. She is dedicated, knowledgable, compassionate, and sincere. Before I met her, I'd been really frustrated with how my former vet interacted with and treated my pets. When I took my cat to Dr. Raichura, we were able to reverse his diabetes so that he no longer required insulin shots. My cats are actually relaxed when they've had to go to her office because of the way she handles and interacts with them. Wow! Dr Raichura is one of the best vets I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and I'm old now ha ha! I am so pleased to have found her albeit an one hour commute! My 3 yr old Boxer HAD a mast cell tumor. It started growing so I knew I had to act. My homeopathic vet in UK told me about Neoplasene and although he had no personal experience he felt it sounded interesting. Dr Raichura was recommended to me by the company that makes Neoplasene. To cut a long story short he no longer has the tumor! It has been a miraculous surprisingly short journey and I cannot thank Dr Raichura and her wonderful staff enough! She exudes positive energy and is so enthusiastic and BIG on teaching. Also, every procedure was done with me there watching...even helping sometimes. This is the definition of a good vet! No taking the animal back behind closed doors! She is very confident and has been there for me every step of the way including one Saturday evening when I panicked with his wound (she gave me her cell #). She has also cleared up his chronic skin allergies and chronic diarrhea! My only wish is that I could have found her earlier in my dogs life but from now on I will continue to take him there. Very bad experience with this vet practice. In order to keep clients the vet is willing to distort information on treatment. My pet passed away within a day of receiving treatment at this clinic from complications and unethical procedures he endured at this clinic. We expect an investigation by the veterinary board of Maryland to begin soon. Don't take your animals here, the vet is not compassionate and will put animals in jeopardy for the sake of billing clients. read more

Holistic vet is not for everyone, hence some bad reviews here that in my view are totally unjustified. In our experience, going holistic is not only better for your dog, but also long term cheaper. The dogs treated holistically are generally healthier and go less to the vet over years. This place is wonderful as they can treat your dog with everything you need: antibiotics (only if needed) and Chinese herbs or acupuncture or homeopathy (we tried it all, and you do not have to "believe" in it, as it works). I am super picky when it comes to care for my animals and I must say, these folks are top notch. I am so impressed at the time and information that Dr. Raichura and her staff shared with me. They are incredibly compassionate and accommodating. And they know their stuff! As further validation, I have a very hyper dog and it was truly amazing how calm he became when entering this practice. To those who question whether or not to consider this practice due to cost, I would argue that any time you see a specialist it will cost more. But in this practice, you have the benefit of multiple healing methods in the same place--Conventional vet services, Chinese medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic, and homeopathy. You'd be driving all over town going to different vets to gain the services that is provided here. Ultimately, especially for those with chronic illnesses, you will ultimately save money and have a healthier companion animal. Furthermore, how many times have you gone to a traditional veterinarian whom you saw for 5 minutes and were turned over for a vet tech to draw blood, give a shot or some other medical procedure. Here, both you and your pet are treated with respect and the vet never leaves you for a second. You have their undivided attention, never feel rushed and they will answer all of your questions. Everything is done in your presence. Your pet is never taken "in the back," out of your line of sight. They are completely transparent and you stay with your pet throughout the visit which is reassuring for your animal. Finally, they do not recommend unnecessary procedures like lab work and other tests which can not only be more costly but can be more stressful for your pet. We had been seeing a magnificent Holistic Vet for many years and she just retired. Needless to say I was devastated. I was grappling with where to go. Despite living in Laurel--30 miles away--they are worth the drive. Truly impressed. I just wish I could give more than 5 stars! read more

We have taken our dogs here twice and will not be going back. Dr Pema Choepel Mallu did not give "thorough" examinations as the the service was very light. One reason we bring our dogs in is to get their ears cleaned and to get medication as they get yeast build up. Dr Pema looked at one of our dogs and said he was fine and gave medicine for us to take home for the other dog. I had to ask her to apply the medicine to my dogs ear and only then did she quickly apply the medicine but she did not clean his ear first! My issue with this place is the low quality service; I felt rushed and it was like I was an inconvenience to the doctor who wanted to quickly get me out. Half of the time I spent with the doctor was her typing up an invoice. If you want a hands on doctor who will "roll up" his/her sleeves then look elsewhere. read more

This place is a chaotic mess! When I first walked in they were doing some kind of filming. I am guessing for videos. I found that to be a little annoying as I didn't quite know where to stand with my dog as I didn't want to get in the way. When I finally went in to see Dr Raichura she seemed to be high strung. She talked really fast said my dog's insides were hot and her tongue was white and she was nervous. Yes she was nervous and panting and picking up on the chaos in the office. I took her there because her fur is growing sporadically and she has a rat tail and ear margin dermatitis. I was trying to explain this to Dr Raichura but she did not seem interested in what I was saying. All she was saying is she needs to eat a raw diet and we will test for allergies. Allergy testing was fine with me but my dog cannot eat raw. This makes her sick. She has chronic pancreatitis and I cook a lowfat diet for her. Dr Raichura handed me two copies of hot and cooling foods and explained to me the yin and yang. I am already familiar with that and my dog has eaten a cooling diet for years now. Raw diets are too high in fat and she can't eat that. Dr Raichura just didn't seem to hear me. The exam she gave my dog was a joke. She didn't even look at her ears. Something was surely missing here! She said feed her raw and her fur will come back. Really Dr Raichura? She came walking out with a box of raw beef and wanted me to buy it. I said no! I have never fed her beef and you want me to feed her this and you just did an allergy test and you have no idea if she has an allergy to beef! How does that even make sense. Plus how many times did I tell her she gets sick on raw! I am furious that I was not listened to and my dog got a joke of an exam. I told her my dog had been tested for yeast, mange and bacteria and all came out negative. She said she pays no attention to that . She told me again to feed raw and she should be fine in a month. It has been 3 weeks and although she is not eating raw meat she is taking the two supplements she gave her but she got sick on the goat milk and fermented fish stock. There is no improvement at all. I called the office over a week ago and have received no return call. I chose to go here to see if my dog could benefit health wise with a different approach to health care. Unfortunately I chose the wrong place! When I pay that kind of money for health care for my dog I expect the best and nothing less! I want my $175 back for the joke of an office visit I was charged. There is absolutely no follow up and they don't give a damn what happens to your dog !!!!!!!
