    New construction

My husband and I were searching for a general contractor for a major project: two new 2,000-square-foot builds in Berkeley. From the beginning, we weren't just looking for someone with experience and expertise--we wanted a contractor who communicated clearly, was respectful, accountable, organized, timely, patient, trustworthy, and willing to go the extra mile. Most of the contractors we contacted fell short of these expectations. Daniel, President of Alvarez Builders, was referred to us by our realtor. Before committing, we walked the job site together, reviewed his quote, toured one of his current projects, and watched how he interacted with his team. We could tell right away that Daniel is not only skilled, but also hardworking and committed to excellence. As business owners ourselves, we recognize and admire that kind of work ethic. Having someone like Daniel on your team removes the fear and stress of being taken advantage of or let down. Instead, it creates a foundation of trust and reliability that makes the entire process far more positive and enjoyable. Even before our project was officially green-lit, Daniel proactively completed as much prep and site work as possible, ensuring construction could begin the moment our permits were approved. Once we had the green light, he took the reins and managed every aspect of the build. For over a year, he coordinated with us, our architect, the city, our realtor, subcontractors, the surveyor, structural and mechanical engineers, neighbors, suppliers, and our lender--keeping everything moving forward. He kept us informed at every stage and ensured the project stayed on schedule. We even received compliments from others involved about his and his team's professionalism and craftsmanship. Managing two simultaneous new builds is not easy. Daniel took full ownership of the project and never once complained. As with any construction project, there were a few bumps along the way, and we made our share of change orders. But whenever an issue arose--whether it was an oversight or a request from the city--Daniel was quick to resolve it with well-thought-out solutions that kept the project moving. We feel incredibly lucky to have worked with Daniel. Not only did we end up with two stunning homes, but we also a positive experience from start to finish. We look forward to working with him again on future projects.

Pull down ladder and 2 pish up openings

We are very pleased with our new garage construction. Daniel and his crew were very nice , professional and responsive. We had several bids with project managers who showed with laptops stayed awhile.. tried to upsell the job and came in with crazy bids 1-2 weeks later. We were getting discouraged Until I saw Alvarez builders working around the corner on a job- Daniel the owner came over we explained everything that we wanted. He looked around took photos 2 Hrs later he gave us a reasonable bid that included everything we talked about. He sent over guys to start the following week. We were so impressed . He demolished, then shored up the ceiling for storage (a lot of construction) added insulation textured the walls then painted, They installed recessed lighting, 3 openings to access storage, cement footing along the perimeters.. new metal door, installed new sink..I definitely recommend Alvarez builders for your project. Thank you. We are happy

We recently purchased a new house in Palo Alto, and we were lucky enough to find Danny and Alvarez Builders to help us put in a new floor. This was a particularly difficult job, as our new home is nearly 75 years old. The old floor was significantly unlevel, with many issues with the sub-flooring. Danny and his team were able to fix the issues with the sub-floor, install some beautiful engineered hardwood, and finished the job a little early (really important, as we had a tight timeline to move into our new house with our prior lease expiring!) and right at the original estimate. We got us a nice looking invoice at the end of the process, and Alvarez Builders was very professional and communicative while the work was ongoing. I received regular updates on progress, but I didn't need to provide much input or direction throughout the process. Our house needs some additional work, and I'm looking forward to working with Danny and Alvarez Builders on our future home improvement projects.

We made several additions and deletions along the way, and every change was priced fairly. The final cost ended up within 2% of the original estimate - no surprises, no hidden fees. - Excellent design support: We met with Steve many times to refine the floor plan and choose materials. His guidance was thoughtful and patient, and we loved the final design. - High quality materials: Most selections came from their showroom, and everything was top-tier. For example, they recommended porcelain tile instead of the luxury vinyl many contractors push. - Outstanding workmanship: Majid was on-site almost every day, making sure everything was done right. He often suggested improvements that weren't specified in the contract, always with our best interest in mind. - Great follow-up service: After completion, a few minor issues came up. Kevin and later Lawrence responded quickly and sent someone out right away. We highly recommended Xpress Kitchen & Bath for any remodeling project.

They have honored their one year warranty not once but twice. Since completing our master bathroom last Summer, the team was called to address a tiling and tub issue. The tub ended up being faulty; regardless, Majid sent his plumbers to address the issue. We cannot express how grateful we are for our beautiful bathroom that we enjoy every single day. I hired Prime to renovate my kitchen - countertops, backsplash, cabinets, electrical, freezer, etc…read more They also helped install a new bidet toilet for me. Overall the experience was very good; Elijah and Bryan were super friendly and responsive. Eli was very patient and accommodating as we discussed several different potential change orders, from new windows to painting, to other misc. things that popped up. Bryan Luna was especially a pleasure to work with. His attention to detail and proactivity to solve any little thing I mentioned was definitely the highlight of working with Prime. Their contracted electrician, Hector, was great as well. I also think they did a great job building out a cabinet to fit our freezer next to the matching fridge. Their master carpenter managed to salvage our existing wood to make it match perfectly. Definitely better than what I'd expect from even a carpentry specialty contractor. I will mention that it wasn't without some snags. Prime deals in volume so they're very busy. I think because I had delays in sourcing a freezer I ended up not getting a dedicated project manager for some time. We had timeline issues made worse with holidays. This caused cascading delays which inevitably pushed back my move in date a few weeks. When I finally did get a new project manager, they ghosted me (later on I found out they had a family emergency). Eli had to step in again to help. Another thing is that their pricing is quite opaque. The estimate will break down prices by milestones, but they repeated told me that it's not a valuation of the milestone itself. This made it nigh impossible to understand if I wanted to contract out specific pieces of the project (e.g. flooring). Design was OK. I felt that the designer was very busy. Sometimes very responsive (5min replies), sometimes not responsive at all (no reply). I wish I had a better, more thorough back-and-forth session about the intricacies of the design. But we made do. Ultimately, the designer made a render and helped point us to some vendors, but from there we had to make our own selection alone (cabinets, handles, pendant lights, faucets, etc.). I did appreciate her presence when we picked out countertops, though. All in all, I think this was a 4.5 star job, but I'm rounding to 5 because of Eli and Bryan :)

Overall, the project went well, and we're happy with the final results. Bryan, our foreman, was a strong asset to the project. Even though he was managing multiple jobs at the same time, his responsiveness and willingness to go out of his way to address our concerns made a big difference. Because we were home throughout the process, we were able to catch issues early and communicate them directly to Bryan, who consistently followed through to resolve them. What Went Well: * The tile and flooring subcontractors were excellent - their craftsmanship and attention to detail truly stood out. * Bryan, our foreman, was responsive to texts and phone calls, listened to our concerns, and made sure they were addressed. He even designed a bi-fold closet door for us, and helped pick up all the material to build it. * Bryan also took the initiative to handle several unfinished items himself, which we really appreciated. * The post-build cleaners were top-notch and left the space in pristine condition. * Throughout the project, everyone we interacted with was professional, courteous, and conscientious. There were no conflicts or issues, which made the experience comfortable for us. Areas for Improvement: * The timeline was a pain point. While we were originally told the project would take 6-8 weeks, it ended up stretching to 12 weeks. * The design process fell short of expectations. Because Prime's in-house designers weren't available, our design work was outsourced. We only received a full design package for the master bathroom. As a result, we ended up creating our own renderings for the other rooms to help communicate our vision to the team. That said, we were very happy with the design and material selections for the master bathroom they did complete. We just wish the same level of attention and design support had been provided for the rest of the project. * At times, resource availability was limited, likely due to workers being assigned to multiple jobs. This led to workflow inefficiencies and delays. Toward the end of our renovation, our foreman Bryan had to personally step in to complete several tasks, such as installing faucets, shelving, and baseboards. He managed to get it done in between site visits and meetings, which we appreciated, but it also highlighted a lack of available crew to close out the project. Despite these few challenges, the quality of the work met our expectations. We appreciated the team's effort and the final outcome.

All prior interior work in our house had been done by handyman. I really appreciated the communication from our project manager Marc. He created a WhatsApp chat with me and the incredible designer Jocelyn. They were both consistently responsive to any of my questions or concerns -- and opened my mind to design options. Jocelyn spent time in our home, drafted plans, took me shopping, and sourced all the fixtures. From her spreadsheet I was able to find less expensive options for some items. I appreciated the input and control I had on these expenses. Since we needed to move out, I had a tight timeline for the project -- mid October until Thanksgiving. Marc and the team did their best despite City of San Jose delays with inspections. We were able to move back in before the final inspection. Every member of the team was kind and courteous. Marc also did a great job working with the window vendor that specializes in older homes. I'm rating the experience a 4.5 out of 5 for two reasons. I was disappointed that the medicine cabinet, switch plates, and hooks were initially installed unevenly (it was corrected). I expected more attention to detail. And I was disappointed in the wear & tear that happened on my wood floors as well as the overall dust in my dining room. I was warned that things would get dusty -- but didn't understand the extent and would have packed away more things. WISE offers lots of support with design -- they could also offer as part of their package a full cleaning! I offer this feedback to help others calibrate their expectations. Overall it was a positive experience. I waited several months to post this review until I returned from travel and could see how things were settling after regular use. I'm loving the new bathroom and recommend WISE.

One thing we really appreciated was how they handled changes along the way. After talking to a few different firms, Kanika Design just felt like the right fit. Kanika really listened to what we wanted. I've always been a bit nervous about using bold colors, but she pushed us (in a good way!) for a deeper color palette in the main living areas. It looks incredible. Kanika found us so many unique, high-quality furniture pieces that you just won't find at a big-box store. The biggest thing for us was logistics. Once the design process completed, their team handled everything - architectural, permit headache, and construction. Anyone who has done a remodel knows things never go 100% perfectly, but whenever an issue popped up, they were on top of it immediately. They kept the contractors moving and kept us updated on the budget and what was happening next. It's a relief to finally be done after 2 years and have a home that feels like us but way better. I can't recommend Kanika and her team enough. We're still obsessed with how everything turned out.
