Seems like a good idea at first until it isn't. To any customers reading this RUN! They don't tell customers that prescheduled rides are a premium more expensive than regular rides, estimates are very often wrong, and customer support is either outsourced or non-existent so good luck getting that membership canceled. There's also no way to tip through the app, yet a mandatory 18% gratuity is added to every trip ostensibly to provide driver benefits and incentives. Many are the times customers have had to use third party applications to tip me or other drivers, or just use cash.
As an employee, I was on multiple occasions asked to work off the clock for some arbitrary task; on one occasion management actually called after I had gotten home threatening to give me a write up if I didn't clean a car that had already been cleared by a service agent and I had clocked out 20 minutes ago. When I explained the liability issue of both driving and returning to work off the clock, said manager went ahead with the write up until an upper manager dismissed it.
Not a week later and I'm called into a meeting where I'm issued a verbal and written warning in the same meeting, with a pre-filled signature line backdating to the day after the incident yet the header date being the dare of the meeting. I assume this was done to fraudulently establish a constructive trail of discipline when in fact it did not exist. The discipline itself was for such arbitrary things as taking an "unauthorized short break" which was an emergency bathroom stop I communicated to dispatch... this also coming after medically documented correspondence of an intestinal issue I gave to management. The other disciplinary infraction being a negligible misunderstanding of car staging procdure they gaslit in the document to trumped up charges of insubordination.
The coincidence of receiving both instances on the same day meant that I was denied a pay raise I was due for in less than a week. They already attempted to deny me this pay raise via attendance policy for two absences i had, which were medically documented and excused for intestinal issues. (This was also after I questioned why they cut our base pay outside of peak hours from $14 to $12 an hour despite a month where inflation rose 8.9% and other markets base pay is as high as $15 an hour, even if that is literally state minimum wage for the market in L.A.)
Finally, it all came to a head in September when I was fired on the first of the month when all bills are due. In addition, this was merely 2 days before I submitted three days of PTO for my wedding anniversary (by Texas law, employers aren't required to pay PTO in event of termination). To further screw me, they worded the termination as an "involuntary separation of at-will employment" for a gimmick to deny unemployment benefits. The best part, I was literally fired for "violating operational procedures" by filling up the gas tank with less than 5 miles to empty, when the facility director insisted it had enough to make it back to the depot.
To add insult to injury they said in the termination meeting my final paycheck would arrive via mail. It took over three weeks for me to receive it, and when inquiring about its status to Alto's HR representative, he said it was at the depot and had been there for some time. They said since I had not picked it up they had sent it in the mail and admitted essentially that the leads lied saying it wasn't there. After I still hadn't received the paper check they offered to issue a direct deposit to my account in an email, but called me to inform that because of the way direct deposit works apparently, that I wouldn't receive the money until the following Monday (it was a Friday conveniently that they called). This meant it had been almost 4 whole weeks until I got my final paycheck.
Finally after I was terminated I was invited to reapply less than three days later. I accepted, naively assuming that the termination had been a mistake. I used the same credentials I had initially applied with, and made it through training, signing an offer letter, video interviews, etc. All the way up to a drive along only to be vehemently yelled at in another meeting by upper management threatening me yet again, demanding to know how I got back into their system and that I should have been ineligible for rehire "due to the severity of my infractions". I asked them since I signed the offer letter if this was a termination for unemployment eligibility and rhey simply said "we'll figure that part out on our end".
The kicker, they stated that my invitation to reapply was invalid because the person who sent it no longer has a relationship with Alto, (the same person who sent my initial offer letter after I found the job via Indeed) but a quick search on LinkedIn easily proved that to be another lie. They even went so far as to edit their linked in profile after my email stating my concern over that fact. read more
