And now to get caught up on some of my reviews from my December 2012 trip to parts of Europe. The beer-houses are quick and simple to review, so here we go:
Location: 5 out of 5
When you're on a street named "Braugasse", or "Beer Lane" as they would say in English, you've found yourself a pretty neat little spot. Seriously, though - our river cruise docked near the statue of Wilhem at the literal "Koblenz" of the Rhine and Mosel, and it was a short 5 - 10 minute walk to Altes. I mean...had I not been distracted by all the neat things going on in the street, it would have probably been a much quicker walk.
Décor and Ambience: 4 out of 5
I really liked the inside of Altes. A nice long wooden bar the moment you walk in, with plentiful tables on either side of the bar. The interior was tastefully and simply decorated with what I presume to be genuine wooden columns and trim. In terms of ambiance, Iwent in the middle of the day near Christmas-time and there weren't a lot of people there, but I imagine that this place can get pretty rowdy, boisterous, and fun for other events like Oktoberfest, Carnival, and Halloween.
Selection and Quality of Beer: 4 out of 5
So vague of a term, but when in Rome, right? Since the sign outside says, "Konigsbacher", I opted for the flagship Pils to begin. They also had 1689, and maybe one of the Bocks on tap. Trust me, when I'm in a place like this, I don't need there to be 30 beers on tap; I just need there to be 3 or 4 that are of decent quality. If you've had their Pils before, you won't be disappointed. If you've never gotten to try the 1689 (a Marzen/Oktoberfest style), it's actually quite malty in taste but incredibly drinkable. I also like how it's not going to floor you, as it comes in at a respectable 5.2%.
Customer Service: 4 out of 5
One thing I learned very quickly is that most Germans not only speak English, but they also speak it incredibly well (and some of an odd British accent...). But as a courteous traveler, I made a valiant attempt at speaking German, even if it was for something as trivial as ordering beer. Numbers are easy to say, but remember that when you do fingers, you count your thumb as "1" instead of starting with your index finger. After a slight fumbling with my words, everything was fine and getting refills on beers didn't prove to be any type of difficult situation.
Price: 3.5 out of 5
Decent prices for a local watering hole. Probably came out to be around 9 euro per liter, which isn't cheap, but since I was on vacation, I wasn't going to complain.
Overall: 4 out of 5
Cute place when I went, but I'm sure it becomes more fun as the night goes on or during the special celebration times. I'd happily go again, and I imagine that I'd even hit Altes up if I were a local resident. read more
