We've been in contract with Alterra for about 7 months now, and I do not recommend this company AT ALL. Sales people were charming, and made promises about free re-servicing between quarterly treatments. That much is true; they will come back between treatments, but they HAVE to, because the job they do is shoddy.
-During late summer/early fall, I had to call for additional treatments FIVE times between quarterlies. Two weeks after the quarterly, I found a black widow spinning a web on our front porch, and a young one building a web on the leg on my kitchen table, after we had been sick and out of the kitchen for two days. I had to call several times to get someone out, and the person who answered the phone didn't seem at all concerned that I had a black widow web where my preschool kids were playing. I ended up spraying the porch, garage, and house myself before they bothered to come out, and found a half-dozen large spiders (jumping, wolf, and widows) just in the garage. This was all less than a month after a quarterly treatment. My children literally were not allowed outside for a few months because this company cannot do their job correctly.
-I found out Alterra uses a cheap spray, so since what they were using wasn't working, I called and asked if they carry a better brand, which is also kid-safe. They do, but it is only available on request, and you have to call the manager and request it. And they only use it inside. Also, the technician flat-out lied to me, saying it was $700/gallon. I can buy a gallon's worth on Amazon for half that, AND it's a super concentrated amount, so there's no way buying it in bulk is as expensive as he let on. Another company in the area uses the better spray for everything, inside and out, and their prices are similar.
-If I don't direct the technician, they do the bare minimum. The guy is literally there 10-15 minutes, working on the outside and garage, then leaves. We have a decent-sized house, and a large yard. There is no way 10-15 minutes is going to cut it. And it obviously doesn't, considering how many spiders and bugs we keep finding. So, I've had to start specifically requesting they spray the rocks, and all around in the garage, and even the porches, because they'll spot spray otherwise.
-One final frustration is that they schedule treatments without asking about timing, and then they don't show up. So I spend entire days at home waiting for a technician to come so I can let him in the house. For our latest quarterly, they emailed a day for service, and no one showed up, and no one notified us. So I called them, and they set another day a week out, which no one showed up for again. Then, with no apology whatsoever, they emailed again, with a time that we planned to be out of town. I cancelled. Then, while we're on vacation I check our bank account and they showed up that day and charged us. I called again and the office girl said he must have just sprayed the outside, and did I want the inside sprayed? Of course I want the inside sprayed! There's no way just doing the outside is worth what we're paying. So, she set up another time for a "re-treatment." So frustrating! And that is just ONE typical interaction I've had with this company.
I will be canceling the service as soon as our contract expires. This has been so horrible I'm seriously considering just purchasing the spray myself and doing it myself. read more
