The 2011 Honda Element our daughter brought to college with her broke down on a busy street on a Sunday night the week before graduation. A couple years ago after the manager I had worked with at the dealer left, I switched to Alternative Solutions at the suggestion of other customers. I have been very pleased with their care of my 13-year-old Prius. One example will serve to illustrate: While driving to visit family in Iowa, I noticed that I was not getting gas mileage above 35, while usually on a road trip I'd get at least 45. Also, I discovered that brake pads had gone through--the grinding. I was in a small town with basically one mechanic. But when I called Tom, he told me exactly what kind of brake pads to get and diagnosed the mileage problem as needing new spark plugs, which he also told me exactly what to tell the mechanic. This job was not going to get A S any business, but Tom spent time with me over the phone to help me. The mileage improved back to where it should have been, and the brakes got fixed. I heard them talking to other customers on the phone while I was waiting to get my oil changed and they seemed to give honest, solid advice and also did not try to push them to fix issues that were not worth fixing. The customer service I received was horrible. I told the mechanic who answered the phone that my car had sat for almost two years but was in pretty good shape and he refused to even let me bring it in to diagnose why it won't start up. He said my car is "trash" and he is "not getting involved and doesn't have time for trash". Then he hung up on me. I've heard great things about this place and it was referred to me, but my initial communication with them was very abrupt and unpleasant. read more

I've been to Alternative Solution for car care ever since I got my Honda Civic in 2004. I will remain loyal to these guys as long as I'm able to get my car serviced by them - they're unfailingly honest, knowledgable, and sensitive to my needs. They specialize specifically in Hondas and Toyotas. A few examples of why I go to Alternative Auto: * They always done when they say they're going to be done. They always follow through with phone calls, and they always explain everything in terms I can understand. * They keep a good record of the services my car's been through, and they always check it before doing any work. * Affordable. An oil change here is a little less than $25 - I think that's competetive with other places, and they've never done it wrong. * They're honest, and smart about cars. Last October, they assessed my car, and knowing that I don't use my car a whole lot, suggested I get a minor service (instead of the major service according to the suggested schedule), saving me about $100. New in town, I was not sure who I could trust to take care of my car without ripping me off. Luckily I was refereed to Alternative Solution Car Care by a colleague. I couldn't be happier with the service they provided. I suggest you make an appointment just for your own sake, cause it is pretty busy. The staff was extremely kind and helpful. He answered all my questions in a clear manner. I got an oil change which cost 25.82 total and it was done pretty quick. I can't thank them enough at Alternative Solution. I was quoted $3300 to replace my transmission (mind you, a used one at that) at another repair shop. I called Tom at Alternative and he immediately said that was steep! He got my info and said he would see what he could do for me. He called back 2 minutes later and found one for $2000 and it had fewer miles on it! He also said there a chance my transmission can be repaired and may not need to be replaced. I had it towed there the next day and sure enough they were able to get my car fixed for less than $600 total! Wish I had known about them sooner, I've put a lot of money into my cars at this other repair shop and now I wonder how much money I wasted! read more

I am revising my review because although the service is good, the skill of their mechanics is quite low. Several times I have come here with car problems and had them fix it for a low price, only to have a related issue several months later. I'm not implying that they caused the later issue, but I am saying that a skilled mechanic would have been able to predict it and fix it in advance. This has left me stranded and waiting for a row several times. For oil changes Alternative Solution is OK, but for complex tasks, take your car to Lusty Wrench. read more

Last year, I purchased a poorly maintained Toyota Yaris for my daughter and had it repaired multiple times in a big-name chain repair shop. However, same problems came back again and again. After I went to Alternative Solutions, Tom was able to diagnose and pin down these problems one after another. From changing the wheel bearing, installing OEM muffler, to cleaning the engine, adjusting break pads & serpentine belt, Tom showed his tremendous knowledge and expertise in uncommon car problems, and was able to always find the most cost-effective solutions for me. We don't take our cars anywhere else. As other have said, they are honest, and they understand that people are on a budget. They will tell you what work has to be done right now and what can get put off for a little bit. I'll just give three examples of the excellent service we've gotten from them. 1. Took our Toyota Tacoma into the dealer for a recall repair. We noticed driving over that the check engine light was on. Toyota dealer said they couldn't tell us which of the two catalytic converters was throwing the signal, but that they would GUESS which one, replace that at around $1000 and then if they were wrong, charge us $1000 to fix the other one. They charged us $85 just to give us the diagnostic. Took it over to Alternative, and they said to try a cleaning product first, and if that didn't work, given the age of our truck they would replace the converters with aftermarket parts rather than OEM (which the dealer didn't mention as an option). With parts and labor, around $300 per converter. The cleaner, which cost less for them to do than we paid to have the problem diagnosed at the dealer, solved the problem. 2. Took our van to a well-recommended local shop for a rattling noise. They kept the car for three days, fixed it, and charged us $800. The "fix" lasted three months. Took the van to Alternative, they fixed it that day for $80. That was three years ago and we haven't had the problem come back. 3. We were getting ready to go out of town on vacation when the air conditioner in my van went out. They fit us in that day and had us on the road to go out of town by 3 p.m. Honest, reliable, quick. You cannot ask for more. read more

I've been a Honda owner since '98 & have been using Alt Solutions for service for the last 10 years. Today I had an appointment at the dealership for some recall work that Alt Solutions does not do. Decided to kill 2 birds with one stone and get an oil change too. Dealership: "How can I help you?" Me: "Appointment for recall work plus oil change." Type, type, type. Dealership: "We don't have the parts for the recall work. Honda has not sent them out yet." Me: "So why did you allow me to make the appointment for the recall work?" Dealership: "Well, you're here for an oil change too." Me: "Right. Cancel that. I'm going up the street to see if Alternative Solutions can fit me in for an oil change." I walked in to Alt Solutions and asked if they could fit me in without an appointment. They could, and did. Half hour later I was again a happy customer. Didn't even have to give Tom my dealership story. He just plays it straight and does whatever he can to give his customers what they need. read more

I used to get my '07 Civic serviced at Honda dealers, but after too many of them tried to rip me off for work I absolutely didn't need done, a family member recommended Alternative Solution. They've kept my car going beyond 200k miles, they do great work, they do it quickly, and they're straight with you about what needs to be fixed now and what doesn't/can wait. In the summer of 2013, I had them change my brakes. My car had over 70K miles and still had the original set of brakes. They weren't making noise yet, but I had them changed as a precaution. Now it's 2016 *(111K miles) and my pads were measured at 3mm. My original ones lasted 2x as long as the cheap ones they put on my car and the price was only a bit less than the dealer's.
