Specialties
I Dr. Carol, offer individualized reading instruction to correct underlying learning issues. As a result, grades improve across subjects including in math. My classroom is located in a commercial office suite and is fully equipped for instruction. It boasts a science center for students to work on science projects such as frog dissections. It also boasts a parent waiting area with a coffee station and bookcase complete with literature on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), disorders such as ADHD and autism, and an article exchange binder to keep parents informed. Over the years, as a public school teacher and in private practice, I have watched many students grow into self-confident students making high marks in school. Some of my students in special education have returned to the regular education classroom.
History
Established in 2013.
I, Dr. Carol, founded the Alternative Reading Center (ARC) to begin a private practice one-on-one tutoring service teaching reading skills through specialized instruction. The ARC's inception began while serving as a volunteer in my children's classroom. I discovered that I have a special rapport with children with special needs. Enthusiastically returning to school, I achieved a Master's Degree in Special Education and began working for the public school system as a special education teacher in a special-day-class for students with moderate to severe disorders and disabilities. While teaching, I also achieved a Doctorate degree in educational leadership with a specialization in curriculum and instruction. After graduation, I began writing a business plan and the ARC's inception came to fruition at its current location. My undergraduate degree is in Registered Nursing of which I thoroughly enjoyed prior to my husband and me starting a family.
Meet the Business Owner: Carol M.
I, Dr. Carol, specialize in working with students with special needs. I work with students of all ages to teach reading skills, improve academic grades, and strengthen scholastic abilities. I accept students of all ages and on all reading levels including those who cannot read. My youngest students are preschoolers. I also work with high functioning students who want to improve their academic ability. My oldest students are adults who return to school for diplomas, need help in college, or take tests such as driving exams. I also conduct research. My published dissertation is entitled, "How Parents Cope with Raising Children with Developmental Disorders." My first article, published last year by Sage Publishing is entitled, "Separate Sunday School for Some Children with Special Needs," which offers a teaching model. My now adult children and loving husband encouragingly support my research and teaching practice.
