I'm a mechanical engineer, and have designed commercial HVAC systems myself. Thus, I've dealt with many technicians. But *never* have I worked with techs as responsive, courteous, helpful, and professional as your staff. Tino, Adrian, and Brandon were a pleasure to deal with. They worked very hard and when the job was complete it, everything was clean and looked like it was done with care and dedication. Even the air handler area was lined with silver insulation to cover years of stains and scratches that we found when we moved here a few months ago. Before leaving, Brandon walked me through the whole installation, helped me set up the remote control apps, and made sure I had no questions. Both my wife and I were impressed that even though they were here for 4 days, they never got in the way and always were cheerful. Two great installers, Josh and Ramon, were always here right on time ready to get to work. Both nice guys. I would stop them occasionally to ask a question and they were friendly and easily and thoroughly answered me. At the end of the day the entire area was totally clean up. The project was completed in the prescribed time. Before they left Ramon took the time to explain the how the new HVAC SYSTEM works then explained the remote and how to use it to set the temperature and fans to optimize my comfort. An old review from 2018 complained about their $160 diagnostic fee. The fee is still policy as of October 2024. They were upfront about this when I made the appointment. The reason for the low review is because (unlike most other HVAC and service companies) the $160 is not applied to the cost of the repair. No matter what, you pay the $160 on top of the cost of the repair. For me, it was a simple fix of changing out the capacitor (a $20 part on Amazon). So, all told, I was out $500 for a 10 minute visit (actually longer because he sat in his car for a while looking for the part but the time in my house was 10 minutes). The positives are that the repair was fast and the technician knew what he was doing. He put on booties in our no-shoe home (always a plus!). However, I was convinced to pay for the repair (even though I have changed the capacitor myself before and had a spare in my closet) because the technician said he would check for any other broken aspects of the AC condenser, so I went ahead and signed. I watched him the whole time and he just put in the capacitor, turned on the AC, and left. I should have been clued in when, during a major heat wave, they were the only local company that could come on the same day whereas others were booked out at least 2 days (and up to a week). All in all, great service but extremely overpriced. read more

My realtor was also enthusiastic about the mini splits and felt they would add value to the house. I recently had my house inspected. We have used Alternative HVAC twice now, once about 2-years ago and again this winter. Both times we inquired about adding heat pumps to our all electric house, and both times they were great to work with. We knew we wanted efficiency as our house is rather large and not super well insulated, and our research suggested that Mitsubishi was the best on the market. Alternative HVAC was the recommended Mitsubishi installer in our region and they responded quickly to our initial inquiries. Mike is an expert on heat pumps and knows them inside and out. He came out each time and explained what sizes he would use, and where he would recommend installing the five different interior mini-split systems, where he would place the exterior units, the upsides and downsides of heat pumps and different mini-splits etc. When I called they always answered the phones or called me back, and met all of their deadlines, which I'm sure can be tough during covid and with high demand in winter (I was expecting slower service and would have been OK with slightly slower response time, so I was pleasantly surprised). Within 2-weeks of our first call, our freezing cold house was blasting heat and using very little energy to do so. Alternative had a GREAT team: they sent paper invoices and estimates via mail to our house (and email of course), they 100% handled all of the Peninsula Clean Energy rebates which had no issues, they appropriately sized all the equipment, they assisted with the San Mateo county permitting process, and stuck to both their pricing and service agreements with zero issues. They also did an extremely tidy job on the installation. I am a picky person. I wanted the ducting to look super straight, clean, and with no mistakes. They were flexible with my strange requests (hiding stuff up in the closets for example), and made everything work better than I could've expected. They also had a follow-up appointment within a year due to some tiny issue which they fixed the next day, without blinking, even though our house is about 40-minutes from their office. I probably won't need any more HVAC additions to my house, but I would certainly recommend this company to anyone who demands a professional experience and wants the best. read more

Mike came and spent time with us to understand the situation and explain the different options which was very helpful. If you have or want to install a ductless mini-split system, highly recommend you hire someone who really knows what they're doing and has plenty of experience specializing in these type of systems as they can be quite complicated and difficult to repair. Alternative HVAC has decades of experience specializing in ductless HVAC systems. We went through 4 or 5 different HVAC repair companies and found it very difficult to find repair professionals who were competent and really understood how to work with ductless systems. Alternative HVAC was the only company that had the confidence and technical expertise to attempt repairs. Agree with some of the other comments in that sometimes you have to be persistent in following up with them and their prices are a bit higher than others, but they have a bettter than industry standard labor warranty. We eventually replaced our system and had Alternative HVAC do the new install. A series of recommendations for anyone looking to install a similar system: - Mitsubishi is the gold standard. - 14-20 SEER is the energy efficiency band you want to shoot for as that is the most reliable. Anything in the high 20s or 30s I have read is more experimental and prone to failure. - They are hard to come by now but spend the extra money for mini split "head" Wi-Fi adapters. Wanted to give a shout out to the wonderful team at Alternative HVAC. We wanted to replace our inefficient and outdated heater, and the team did a fantastic job start to finish. When we made the decision to get quotes, we had Maurice come to our house and examine our situation. No hard sell, great explanation of our options, and a very reasonable quote. When it came time to schedule the work, we had to do it over Christmas since it was the first available spot, but despite the holidays, everyone was right on time, and the work got done as scheduled. (It had been a couple years since we had a tech look at everything- we changed filters and cleaned per instructions.) We had our furnace and air conditioner replaced with a heat pump system, along with adding some ducting and an attic fan. The extra ductwork was put in because the original ducting and single return register was not adequate for the house. They were able to schedule us sooner than I had imagined. The workers cleaned up after themselves; the job turned out to be trickier than expected and took 2-3 days extra, but there was no extra charge. They set up the city inspection for me and everything is now signed off on. It's working well (so far we've only used the air conditioner, since it's summer). The extra ductwork and air return have helped to get the cool air to a couple of rooms at the very end of the line that never used to get cooled adequately. read more

Contracted Alternative to install my parents HVAC and replace ducts. The install team did a poor job installing and testing. They were contracted to replace the HVAC intake return but upon inspection it was not replaced. They had to return 3 different times to finish the work, including a simple job of configuring a google thermostat correctly. My father requested a hardcopy of their HVAC installation manual, which was not provided. They did not disclose the $300 Bayren charge for the safety inspection. The San Carlos county inspector failed the inspection as the exhaust flue was not secured to the heating unit. They also left a bag of asbestos material on the property as part of the asbestos abatement. The HERS tester had to return 3 times with Alternative providing additional sealing and patching of the vents/returns before the HERS passed final. You may want to reconsider using this contractor for your HVAC needs. read more

I received a timely email from Yvonne informing me of their first available appointment time, and that there would be a $160 charge to "schedule a Technician to perform a diagnostic". The problem is, they advertise a "FREE estimate" in several places on their website, including right at the top of their contact form. An $160 service fee doesn't sound "FREE" to me. Our heating and cooling system stopped working when a neighbor's HVAC contractor attempting to repairing their system which is in close proximity to our A/C system caused our system to fail. I've been trying to install a Nest E thermostat and failing in a variety of ways. My wires weren't supplying enough power to the Nest E so I was getting error "e195". You'll find some YouTube videos about this. I corresponded with Yvonne over Yelp messaging and we agreed to schedule a call with the technicians before they came out. Just to make sure they could fix it. In the call, their team figured out my problem and walked me through fixing it. I had to connect the brown common wire to the motherboard in the furnace. They stayed on the phone and talked me through doing it. For free! They didn't even have to come out. They coached me through popping the the panels off my furnace, finding the right wire, figuring out which terminal to connect it to... all the steps. That 10 minutes earned them 5 stars and saved me ~$360 based on the other quotes I got. For anyone else with the "not enough power to R wire" problem on their Nest who happens to have a Trane XV90, the fix that worked for me was to connect the common wire to the B terminal at the furnace end and to the C terminal on the Nest. Technicians were double booked and constantly showing up late for my last 3 appointments. I even called multiple times to the office for ETA, and they said they would call me back, but nobody called back. We were already waiting for 2-hour window and plus 1- 2 hours for technicians to show up. Technicians told me that they were told to go to another site to help out other jobs. We wanted to support the local business and being their customer for 3 years, but I guess they don't care. Technicians are always nice and very through but the front office (scheduling and customer service) is horrible! Responding to Alternative HVAC comment: Hope you read my comments carefully. It happened 3(three) times, not one appointment. There was no communication regarding your technician running behind. In fact I had to call several times on each appointment, and received calls after appointment window(which is two hours), is not professional. Hi Greg, I saw your response to my post and you're welcome to call me. My number is on the invoice. You have several facts incorrect starting with 1) the person who originally installed the mini split was a licensed HVAC contractor 2) the unit has not been refilled several times. I called FUSE and I said in my original review they fixed the unit by #1 cleaning a pretty dirty filter and doing some general maintenance. My house has a flat roof (2 stories) and no one has complained about getting to the unit. Your facts are not correct but if you're okay with the inaccuracies that's fine with me. Time will tell if what FUSE did will work in the long run but it's working great now. read more

We got solar panels put in a few years back with the intention of getting electric heat for the house. Mike and his crew (includes the office folks too!) were the ONLY ones that KNEW how to install a heat pump (runs on electricity) that we could find here in the Bay Area. All the others were trying to sell us something else or talk us out of our system. They put the system in. It needed a little time to work out the kinks, but the service guys were on the job with timely service. If you are considering a heat pump option, Mike and the team at Alternative HVAC Solutions are by far the obvious choice. Others may be catching up, but these folks know what they are doing. If you are going with gas heat, they also know what they are doing here as well. We got a gas furnace to work in conjunction with our heat pump on those really cold days. Alternative HVAC should have a 5 out of 5 stars!!! Seriously, Alternative HVAC saved me over $12K. After our air conditioning unit was not working and all thermostats in our home were toast, I had called Service Champions since they appeared to be the highest rating on yelp and Google. You can't always trust these ratings but please believe you can trust this one... To make a long story short, a technician from Service Champions came out, spent about 5 hours and over $440 dollars later our system was still not fixed. I was told that we needed to have our entire system rewired and the reason the system wasn't working was due to the wires crossing. He said to fix this it would cost over $4K. The tech recommended that we consider purchasing a new unit given the cost. I agreed to speak with someone from their company about a new unit and have them double check our system. Today, they had another technician come out to check our unit and talk to me about purchasing a new unit. He looked at the system and reconfirmed our unit was toast and that I should purchase a new unit and have it reinstalled properly. I told him that I was going to get a second opinion and he assured me that the first technician who I will leave nameless was their best technician and that I shouldn't delay in getting a new unit since he looked at it and gave his recommendation to move forward. He then started to talk about the temperature how hot its going to get this week and to get this done soon, he needed a contract signed today. He was sure I needed a new unit. He quoted me $12,500 for a new unit, installation and a "great 10 year warranty on parts and the unit". At this point was disappointed since I thought my only option was to pay thousands of dollars and possible over $12K for a new unit. Not happy at this point. I asked a round a bit and got a recommendation from a friend and he told me to call Mike at Alternative HVAC. I called and spoke to the receptionist here and she had one of their technicians, Nate out at our home within the hour. Apparently there was a cancellation, nonetheless I was pleased. Within 30 minutes he had the unit working, air conditioning humming and at a fraction of the price. He said I did not need a new unit only needed to replace a failed transformer. The total cost was about $225. Much less than what I paid at Service Champions and they fixed our system with integrity. Bottom line: Alternative HVAC save me thousands of dollars! They fixed my unit with very little fuss and clearly had integrity while doing it. I would totally recommend Alternative HVAC! These are now my HVAC Co for life! read more

We needed to replace our old, no longer functioning, gas furnace and decided to install a heat pump, mainly to go green. We selected Alternative HVAC from three quotes we obtained. They were very helpful in explaining the best options, and we went with a Mitsubishi ducted heat pump. Installation was very smooth and to a high standard. They handled all the paperwork and rebates, including the city inspection which it passed with flying colors. The surprise has been how much more comfortable the house environment is compared to gas furnace forced air heating: no more getting baked then chilled, but quiet maintenance of the selected temperature, with the option of A/C if needed. When I subsequently followed up with Mike a few times over email, he suddenly stopped responding. Timely and expert service. By the time the professional showed up I had unknowingly cleared the error code on the furnace. He restarted the furnace and told me how to look for the error code. Within a month the furnace coded again, I observed the code, and within the same day I called, and he returned. When I told him the code, he went to his truck, got a part, replaced it, and was out in 5 mins. The second visit and part were judged to be part of my first call. read more

In short avoid this business at all cost. First we have a furnace not lighting so we requested a tech to look it over. His findings were we needed a "New Gas Valve Block". We received a quote of $967.00 to replace the part we agreed to have this work done. We had to wait a few days to get the part , we set a appointment up for the work to be done, then we get a call that the part was there early so we set up a new appointment the next day so far so good. Then we had the tech come over early to install it even though the part was not exactly the same as the old one it was suppose to work. The tech installed it tried several times to get it to light but no go! The tech was not able to figure out why so he called it in to his office for another tech with more knowledge . So we had to wait more time then expected. The first tech said the guy should see us on Monday and that he would let his office know. I waited Monday basically all day no phone call so I called there office they said they had no knowledge about this from the tech. I said the tech told me the name of the guy that would follow up and that he would come out which after my call back to find out what was going on they did send out the other tech. The tech struggled with the Valve for 2 to 3 hrs but kept saying to me because of the age of the Furnace I should just give up and replace the whole Furnace with a new one , but finally he got to light but it would not stay lit! The Tech told me we probably got a bad part that was defective from the get go and that again he says we should replace the Furnace. To which I say I know that the Furnace is old but that I had PG&E look it over and tried to relight it & even he said that the Furnace was in real good shape for it's age but I needed a new gas Valve! I told the Tech that if the valve replacement works once then won't work then why not take out the defective valve and give me a NEW ONE and see if that will work? Again the Tech tells me we should replace the Furnace with a New One , to which I tell him my 93 yr old Mother does not have the Money for this and that basically that the "Replacement Valve They Installed IS DEFECTIVE". The Tech told me the valve probably had a "Bad Pilot". So I basically don't hear anything more until today I called again they said they sent me an E-Mail which is ok but I would prefer a phone call. In the E-Mail they suggest a New Furnace again! So again I tell them we don't have the Money for that and that I just want a New Replacement Valve Part since the First one is Defective. So I ask what are you guys going to do to resolve this problem? There answer were sorry but we can't help you! Now even I know Time is Money and they spent a lot of time trying to get a defective part that " They Installed" to work! Even the Tech said he was going to "probably get into trouble for spending so much time on this job"! So I told him to ask his Company to just Replace the Defective Part that Again "THEY INSTALLED"! Now it seems to me if you have me agree to replace a part for $967.00 which I agree to pay once you get my Furnace working you should KEEP YOUR WORD AND DO IT! Not give up and QUIT because your Tech Spent To Much Time on it and Now you want to Make Up Your Losses By Selling me A Whole NEW FURNACE! I had called about a problem I was having with some work that was being done and just as I began to speak on the phone to explain what happened, I immediately got hung up on in the middle of my sentence, so I never had a chance to explain it.
