I brought my 2, male, three year old pugs in to get neutered. The staff was so very friendly with the people there and the animals. Check in took maybe half an hour and I was 5th in line. I have used them for years to fix ferals and my own personal cats. NEVER AGAIN. Their new policy is to charge $20 for pain meds PLUS the cost of the spay/neuter. This is written in small lettering on the forms and when you look up the prices on their website, you have to scroll in order to find this mandatory $20 pain killer. So that ended up being much more than I had budgeted out, quite the shocker when we checked out.. As I am leaving I am looking at the paperwork for my kittens and realize one of the kittens does NOT have the stamp for the pain meds I paid for. I ask and was told he did receive them. He is currently crying in pain and is extremely restless. The other two are doing well, which makes me question whether or not he did in fact receive his pain meds. No way to know for sure, but what I do know is I paid for them, and he is most definitely in pain. The spay and neuter clinic is cheaper and performs the same services, I would suggest taking your pets there, at least they're up front about the cost, and hopefully they'll give your animals the pain meds you pay for. read more

*I went to the Mesa location* I am rating 3 stars because the customer service was HORRIBLE, but the cost was very fair and they took care of my puppy. I found the front desk to be very snotty and argumentative, which made me uncomfortable. Luckily, I don't care about being right, I care about getting my dog taken care of. I was referred to this place by a great friend who took her little baby about a year ago. I called on Wednesday and they said they had a cancellation for Thursday so I was able to bring in my dog to get spayed that next day! I'll admit this place is located in a VERY sketchy neighborhood but please don't let that deter you. This place was very busy but I didn't really have to wait long and I was very happy to see how pleasant and nice each of the staff members were, not only to me but the man and woman who were coming out to the lobby to take the pups back were very sweet and caring to each one that they took from us. I was heartbroken to leave my pup there all day and especially thinking about her waking up from the surgery and not seeing her mamas face but I knew that she was in very good hands. They called me around 12:30 to let me know that Sundae did great in surgery and would be ready for pickup by 2:30. When I arrived and they brought her out she clearly was a little out of it but her little tail was wagging at the joy of seeing my face. She is now 1 day out of surgery and has been recovering even better than I thought she would. I have pain meds to give her daily and she is walking (just small distances), drinking water, and going potty so I am VERY happy I chose this place to get her fixed. read more

Over the past few months I've brought 6 of my dogs to get spayed and neutered. They were so wonderful with all of them! 4 of my pups were born during Covid which means they are not socialized at all. My other dogs haven't been socialized much in a year either so we were nervous but the staff definitely has a way with animals! They were so kind and caring! One of my boxers, Kennedy, is a bit *feisty* so we had a muzzle on her. When we picked her up, she had her muzzle off and she had a bunch of new bffs the staff all said how much they loved her. We have one more dog we have to bring in to get spayed and we've already set up the appointment. I highly recommend them to anyone! read more

I can't say enough GOOD about this place. What a wonderful, dedicated staff- and volunteers (volunteer is the one who "sold" me the first time I took strays in. Thought how can they be this inexpensive and still be kind/good. She's been volunteering for years because of their mission, quality.) Recently, I was picking up a feral for a neighbor and was quite late. I think it was Justine, Kaitlin who went out of their way. They could have brushed me off, but stopped to help. I am amazed. After a long process of trying to find the right place to get my dog blue fixed, I called altered tails and spoke to a very nice lady named Brooke. I was recommended this place by a friend of mine. After making my appointment I went in the next day to have his surgery, He is a cryptorchid witch means a much higher cost of surgery. When I picked up my boy today Brooke had cleared all cost of surgery. The kind heartedness of this lady is incredible and she is absolutely amazing. I would give this company 100+ stars if I could. I am very upset and disappointed with Altered Tails and there complete lack of professionalism. My wife and I are responsible pet owners. We have two indoor/outdoor cats that have been chipped. Jerome is almost 10 and Theo is about 4 years old. There is a house at the end of our street that feeds stray cats so ferrel cats do hang out there and it is a problem. Now we have a doggy door, because we have two dogs. The cats come and go as they please. They are often found eating food at the end of the street. Today we were told that someone pickup up Jerome, thought he was a feral cat and brought him to this facility to be fixed. Altered Tails then tagged Jerome's ear and put him under anesthesia for surgery - WITHOUT my consent - and again HE HAS A CHIP and has been fixed for a decade! They figured that out after the fact. Jerome is not a young cat and the anesthesia could have killed him. Isn't it common practice when a stray or suspected ferrel car is brought in to check for a chip? I would also think before preparing for a surgery you would examine the animal and see that the animal was already fixed eliminating the need for the surgery. What an incredible lack of professionalism that is inexcusable! read more

REVISED: My stray kitten developed FVC (feline calicci virus) a week after being neutered there, then spread it to two other cats, costing me almost 400.00 in vets fees!! Tho I DO think this place is worth the $, I would STRONGLY CAUTION you NOT take a cat or dog that hasn't been vaccinated there...I had never even HEARD of this virus till the neutered boy stopped eating and we saw very painful sores all through his mouth; he's doing better now and the others are on there way to recovery as well. Altered Tails DOES have a caution on their receipt about not being responsible if your animal picks up a disease---- would have been nice to see that FIRST, not after surgery was done! They ran a special for dogs 6 months and younger, so for $20 I could alter my little baby boy dog Leo. I docked points for two reasons their appointment policy and small waiting area. EVERYONE is given a 7:30 am appointment. This means you and your beloved fur baby will end up waiting in a line/ small space with lots & lots of other pets. Some of these pets are super sweet & friendly, and some want to fight and/or bite. We witnessed a yokel bring a large white Pitt bull on a shoe string of a leash, the dog was controlling the yokel and it went after a black lab. The owner of the black lab, rightfully, gave a tongue lashing to the irresponsible dog owner. Then the yokel unleashed his inner Tourette's syndrome and cursed and screamed for about 15 minutes. The labs owner did not back down, this upset the other dogs. I have two pit mixes. It's not the breed, it's the owner knowing their dog & training him/her properly. The white Pitt was a danger to everyone there. Altered Tails should stagger all of the appointments to limit the number of pets in close quarters and warn irresponsible dog owners to control their pets. The staff was very nice and we had no problems with my little guys recovery. For an additional and minimal fee, they gave him his shots, microchipped my boy and trimmed his nails. Please be careful with your beloved fur babies, some dogs and owners do not play nicely. read more

I went to Altered Tails at 950 W. Hatcher, in Phoenix, this morning for a so called appointment, that I made online, to get my kitten spayed and when I got there, three homeless people, who were leaning against the building on their property, started making growling and meow noises at my kitten when I carried her past them and she was already upset and scared from being driven in a carrier. When I got to the back of the building it was complete chaos people running around very impersonally handing you a clipboard for yet another round of filling out information that you already filled out online. Then there were dogs barking incessantly in the background so loud it was hard to think and it was also stressing out my kitten and the huge dog that was next to me who was barking and lunging toward my kitten in the carrier. My kitten was so frightened she started biting at the metal bars of the carrier, lost a tooth and was bleeding. When I had enough I told them I wanted my money back but was told that it was not there policy to refund money. I started arguing with the lady at the counter. Then the owner of the dog who was lunging and barking at my kitten stood up in my face and told me he was going to detain me. What?! I told him "Fuck you, try and detain me and see what happens to you"! Was I cussing? You bet I was and I cussed again when the director called my back to refund my money because I left a message with her that my kitten was injured from being stressed out by the dog trying to attack her. This was the most unacceptable place I have ever seen. They stress out the animals and the owners, then want you to leave your animal there to be put under after all this stress. Are you kidding me? You people need to get your facility and yourselves together. Low cost does not mean you can treat pets and their owners with disrespect and disregard. Shame on you! I would never take any of my pets to this place it needs to be investigated or closed down. read more

For the Trap-Neuter-Return program, the Clinic's paperwork states that if the cat needs any additional medical procedures, the Good Samaritan who traps the feral cat will agree to pay the vet bill, REGARDLESS of how much the vet bill will cost. February, 2017. The Trap-Neuter-Return form states, "If in the course of treatment, a condition is discovered which requires medical attention or an additional procedure, I consent to these procedures and agree to pay the additional costs.... I acknowledge this feral/ free roaming cat is at higher risk for surgery.... I approve surgery regardless of the outcome of the examination." What that means is... if the vet decides the cat needs $ 25 or $ 250 or $ 500 in medical procedures, then the person who brings in the feral cat is willing to pay the vet bill, REGARDLESS of how much the vet bill will cost. If you do not sign the form EXACTLY AS IT IS WRITTEN, the Clinic will not accept the cat. I am still giving Altered Tails five stars, because they are a non-profit and they provide a super-valuable service. But, I really wish they would change their form read more

Do not go here!! Dr. Ayle spayed my pup on 9/23/16. She left a piece of the ovarian remnant behind. She went into heat & was bleeding 2 mo's after her surgery. Vet told me I had 2 options. Do nothing /Redo the surgery which they would have to cut her wide open to locate the ovary. She refused to discuss anything in regards to this & directed me to her ins co. Zurich ins. I was told i would have to cover All the cost & once the ovarian remnant was removed & I had proof then they would reimburse me. Surgery was completed on 5/10/17 with a specialist at my expense. During the surgery the specialist remove the ovarian remnant & also removed a 3cmx3cm Large cyst that was formed from the ovary left behind. I know that for a fact because it was attached to the ovarian remnant. My dog would of died from that cyst that was continuing to grow if I didn't follow thru with the procedure! The ins co now is giving me a hard time settling. Such a stressful ordeal, I do not recommend anyone going here. read more

Loved the flow of the process and especially the Altered Tails staff! At drop off, the staff did an efficient and caring check in. I felt at ease leaving my fur baby with them. They said they were aiming for four for the pick up time, but would call if he was going to be done any sooner. When I went to pick him up, the staff were amazing. The front desk person went over the aftercare and extra pain killer instructions. The man that brought out my dog was incredibly nice. He gave my dog scratches and helped while I put on the cone, offered to give me a towel for my car, and helped me carry my dog out to my car. The staff was so kind, caring, and compassionate! I've never come across such incompetence in a philanthropy. First I called in to rent a trap so I could take a sick cat to my vet, and was told to come in, the traps were free so long as they are returned within 10 days. That's a nice, altruistic approach that legitimately helps feral cat populations, I thought. But when I got there, a completely uninformed young woman had no idea this was possible, however after speaking with management, I got the trap. The paperwork says traps can be checked out for 10 days but the uninformed young woman wrote me down for only four. When I called to check on this, I spoke with yet another person who didn't know traps are available to people who have a feral cat in need. Ultimately, Altered Tails was completely valueless, and not just unhelpful, the base ignorance of the staff, cost me quite a bit of time. I was, obviously, going to make a donation because it seemed like an organization that really sought to aid feral animals, but now I'll spend the money on a trap instead. I don't know anything about the vets there, but the front office staff are breathtakingly vapid. Why risk it? read more

I took my seven month old puppy to get neutered here about two and a half weeks ago. The people all are nice and they did a great job. But my vaccinated dog got parvo! And he died from the parvo yesterday... This was the only place he could have gotten it from as I kept my puppy at home only. His parvo symptoms directly relate back time wise to his neutering here. I called and told them about the parvo - no one has called me back to even see how my dog was doing. So on top of a dead dog and $1000 vet bill, I also have a $182 neuter bill for my now dead dog. **BEWARE**This place caters to feral cats and large or overweight dogs. If you have a small healthy dog, they will refuse spay/neuter service because their veternarian is not experienced enough to administer anesthesia. Spend the extra money and get all spay/neuter services at an experienced vet. read more

EXTREMELLY disappointed in my visit. Had three of my kittens fixed there, and was told pickup was at 3-5. I got stuck in traffic and was going to be super late, so I called to see if my boyfriend could pick them up 15 minutes after 5, she told me I would have to pay a fee of 30 dollars for each cat. I explained the situation and that I could not afford to pay 90 dollars for being 10 minutes late. She was very kind and agreed if I could make it before 5:20 that it would be fine. So my boyfriend arrived to pick them up at approximately 5:10 only to be yelled at by the executive director named Ellen who told him I lied and that conversation never happened. So I call while he is there arguing with this unhappy woman, and ask nicely to speak with her. Immediately Ellen was EXTREMELY rude and would not let me explain the conversation I had with another worker. She THEN proceeded to HANG UP on me and slam MY BOYFRIENDS phone onto the counter, and once again demanded 90 dollars. Finally after my boyfriend threatened to call law enforcement we got our cats back. Not without another argument about whether we were entitled to their medical records or not. She was trying to refuse their medical records to us because we would not pay nearly 100 dollars for being 10 minutes late. Then had the nerve to tell my boyfriend we could not come back there. read more

The Mesa office is shady, I have no experience with the Phoenix office. I took my 4 month old pup in for the promo under 6 month spay for $20, and the first guy said she doesn't qualify because she is 9 months old! I told him that she isn't 9 months old, I received her 2 months ago when she was a tiny 8 week old puppy. So he says well let's get a 2nd opinion, and the 2nd person said she is just barely 6 months old so doesn't qualify. I was going to have them give her the $65 shot package, $20 pain meds, and nail trim so I was going to spend more than the $20 promo. They lure you in with the deals, and then they try to make excuses to get you to pay full price. I will go to Petco for her shots and pay another vet office full price for the spay just so they do not have my business. read more

BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE While the price is great what your dog brings home is NOT My 1 year old English Bulldog e rescued was neutered there the same day my daughters collie mix female was spayed. They both go to different areas but both came home with HORRIBLE cases of Kennel Cough. If thats not bad enough when we called to tell them they told us we had to take them to a full service vet at our own expense. They also really did not care. The director said that bringing your dog there was like taking your child to Daycare. After everything it was more expensive then having our FULL SERVICE VET do the fixing in the first place. Im pretty sure they wouldnt of come home sick also. The Kicker is now our 10 year old American Bulldog has it because its so contagious. They could of helped us, they could of cared THEY DID NOT To prevent Kennel cough they need to sanitize every night. I cannot believe that our dogs were the only ones that got it. I have had many animals that have gotten spayed/neutured at alter tails. The glue has not been staying had to take many of my animals back to altered tails to get stappled. When getting stappled I have had to take my animals to another vet to get glued or stappled again and it stays!!! Requesting to get animals stappled at this facility they tell you its up to the doctor how does the doctor know what my animal is like at home?? The staff in the back is wonderful!!! However the staff member at the front desk needs an attitude adjustment she is always right and you are always wrong. She doesnt change appointments puts them in at the wrong date and when calling she answers the phone rude!! Not a great impression on the clinic especially when thats the first person they talk to or see. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE. I took my kitten in on July 17th to get fixed, from the minute she came home I was unhappy with the outcome. Not only did they not provide a cone for her, but it looked like they just took folds of her skin and glued them together no better than a child would. As the days went on the incision only got worse. On July 23rd I took her back in to get a re-check and all they did was throw some more glue on her incision. During that visit was when they suggested purchasing a cone for her after care. The next day I woke up to find my kitten's incision was open with some sort of blue thing was coming out of the opening. I had to take my kitten to an emergency vet where they informed me it should have already been healed and wasn't sealed properly. They had to put a staple in place to let it fully heal. The blue thing coming out of her tummy wound was a mix between glue and stomach tissue that had died from being released to the air. She was put on antibiotics as a percausion for any infection. I will never EVER let another pet of mine go to this horrible place. They clearly have no idea what they are doing. Please think twice before taking your pet here, I have had over 7 cats in my life and have never had anything like this happen. This was my first time ever trying out Altered Tails and I can promise it will be my last. Please think about your pets health before stepping in that facility. read more
