But Chappy and his staff were able to save my dress and shorten my expensive bridesmaid dress with no problem at all. It was done in a timely fashion and for a very reasonable price. The only complaint I have are the hours they are open (typical work hours that conflicted with my own work hours and not open on weekend and having difficulty getting in contact with him in the beginning.) UPDATE: took in a pair of jeans to be shortened and was told they would be completed by the next week... called the next week and was unable to get a hold of anyone. My boyfriend went by the shop and a sign was posted that the business would be closed that entire week. We attempted to call the day after they said they would return and all calls went straight to voicemail. After reaching Chappy's (at the phone number provided to me by the previous YELP reviewer), he saw me the next day for a fitting and had both pairs altered the following day. I took in 3 pieces to be altered for my son's upcoming wedding: full-length silk skirt with…read morematching shell and a coordinating jacket.The hem on the outer skirt is very uneven with the underskirt more so (doesn't line up with the overskirt for the most part). The silk shell was taken up at the shoulder instead of hemmed from the bottom (which was suggested by Mary's Alterations) and ended up with very uneven stitching and seaming that doesn't match up. The jacket has a structured silk outer shell with a light, flowy underneath that shows from the front and bottom of jacket's sleeves and hem. The sleeves were too long and while the outer sleeves were hemmed to the needed length, the under sleeve was not and is still too long and out of propoption giving the jacket an awkward look. The jacket's shoulder width was to be taken but now the sleeves are too narrow making the jacket uncomfortable to move in. The alterations were not ready until the day after promised and had to be picked up in a rush with no time, on my part, for trying on or inspection. If it weren't for the wedding date and international departure being so close, I would take to a different alterations business to be fixed. Be advised that "Mary" has retired and her alterations business was purchased by Georgie Bridal and Formal which to me makes the 40 years in business an inaccurate statement. The two reasons I chose Mary's Alterations were the many happy customers based on service (prior to Mary's retirement) and the recommendation to "give them a look" by an acquaintance since they are located near me. The front office staff were personable and friendly but I will definitely let the person who recommended their service know about the quality received and suggest they reconsider any future recommendations. High quality and complicated alterations can be expensive; however, I don't feel the $200+ spent was close to value. ***this is the only alterations establishment I've ever used that requires upfront payment, in full. Be aware of this since it's possible your alterations will come back later than promised and less than adequately done.
