Came here for mid-day beers. The patio space is beautiful and a great place to have a meal and catch up with friends. I tried two of the beers (the festbier and the oatmeal stout). Both were good and perfect for one of the first fall-like days. I also really appreciate that they have taster size options so I didn't have to pick just one and pound back a full pint. Prices for each of the different sizes are fair and comparable to other places in the area. My friend ordered fries and they were okay, but not my favorite fries. They have some other interesting things on the menu that I would like to try when I come back in the future. read more

Extremely disappointed! Lunch time of Scarecrow Days they were not preared- tables were still available but it was 30 minute wait. We had to follow up for a table and the hostess sat us at a table that was open the entire time. They ran out of cups for water, ran out of meatballs for the meatball sandwich. We ordered flatbread. The brie, bacon, apple flatbread was burnt and cold- we found maybe two pieces of bacon, couple apple bits, and only a few slices had brie. $18.99 for that! Ridiculous rip off! Not returning! read more

My group and I had an excellent experience at Alter! The staff was super helpful helping me pick out a beer I would like. Our waitress Kelly went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time! Will be coming back soon. read more

First time coming here and would definitely be back. The place is large and very clean. The layout is great - you aren't right on top of each other but has a warm feel. We had a party of 5 that all go there at different times. Our server was kind and understanding and checked in on us an appropriate amount of times. Our orders and drinks came out quickly. We got the 1/2lb pretzel as an appetizer and I highly suggest. Everyone enjoyed their dinners but the highlights were the bang bang cauliflower and the shrimp tacos! If you are in St Charles, I highly suggest a visit here! Oh, and my husband said the beer is good also :) read more

If you're looking for solid craft brews with a killer view look no further than Alter. All around great experience. Loved the ample outdoor seating spaces both along the River and out front of the main entrance. Clean, sleek, modern look and feel. Seemed to be a great atmosphere for all ages. Solid beer and while we didn't order any food, everything we saw served to patrons seated around us, looked excellent. Front waitstaff could be nicer especially when people are visiting for their first time. Service was good. Brewery stickers available at the front! The only "downside" is the beer is pricey. About $10 per pint! read more

Cute brewery with a stellar location along the river, this place has true potential. Service was great provided by Michelle, beer was just mediocre... for being a brewery. Went here on a Saturday night with a group of 6. Had to wait about an hour but upon sitting we were greeted by Michelle; warm and super knowledgeable about the menu and beer. When ordering beer, I like that you can choose your size between 5oz, 16 oz, crowler or growler size. They also have your standard flight options which is nice. The guys in our group ordered a couple options - center line and their Oktoberfest to both were a little underwhelming and lacked a full body flavor. They weren't really impressed. Food looks good and is good! I ordered the smash burger which is essentially a patty melt. My boyfriend ordered the brisket chili which was good as well. Everyone's food at the table was good as well. We did have vegan and vegetarians in our group and to our surprise, they actually had options which is a plus. Prices for food seemed a little on the higher end but expected for being in the heart of downtown St. Charles. Overall, really cool location , service was great provided by Michelle, I just think we expected really stellar beer only to be surprised that it tasted more bland than flavorful. Not sure I'd be racing back, but if in the area could be an option. read more

Alter Has the potential of being a really good restaurant. We like having the pretzel at $19 for a small $29 for the large is quite expensive. We've gone to several other restaurants for a pretzel. Most places was between 13 and $15. The food is good We had the hamburger and the Reuben. Both were good . Ruben needed a little more meat. I would recommend to try Alter. read more

fish and chips were good but i think for $28 you should get more than 3 and a half drip of fries. service was good but we only got some beers on the patio and that one dish. they have a lot of people working which is good. seemed like a lot of moving parts in there and a solid operation. would go back based on location cause it's a nice view of the river there on the patio. not necessarily my new favorite place in st.charles but a solid brewery for american fare when in the area. read more

We came in for dinner on a Friday night, it was busy but not crowded. We had gotten on the waitlist and had responded. When we arrived, the hostess was extremely rude and said that they had removed us from the waitlist but she guessed she could fit us in. While we were waiting, she proceeded to have a verbal altercation with the other hostess next to her. Service was super slow and our waiter seemed annoyed to be there. The food was expensive for what it was and was disappointing. My husband ordered the shrimp tacos and they were almost too spicy for either of us to eat (and we both enjoy spicy food). We love the beer and the happy hour specials are good, but we won't be back for dinner. read more

Great place! Wonderful outdoor seating, with a patio along the river. Very casual. Dog friendly. Great menu- especially enjoyed the peach salad! Friendly, attentive service. Will definitely be back! read more

First time here. Service was great, attentive, friendly, good suggestions from our server. Nice patio facing the Fox River and great open space inside, simple straight lines, modern, overall nice decor. We shared two items: the beer cheese fondue and the Sweet Ginger Rock Shrimp salad. The salad was fresh and crisp, the sweet ginger dressing and pineapple tamarind created a bursting of flavors to all fresh ingredients. The cheese fondue was yummy, lots of bacon, and green onions. The pretzel were soft, buttery, just excellent even though I had only a little piece. My friend, and later on my husband devoured them. Drinks were great. Not sure which white wine my friend had or the name of my spicy cocktail with excellent jalapeños. Overall good experience, I would go back. It is on the expensive side specially if you have alcohol - our drinks added to be double than the food read more

Great beers and food. We stopped there before a concert and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. We already knew that beer was good. Try the patty melt! read more

This was my first visit to this location of Alter. I had previously been to their Downers Grove location. Came in on a Tuesday night and I was so surprised at the super slow service. They had a decent amount of staff working but I didn't see our server for long periods of time. I had a salad that was pretty decent. Their dressings on the menu didn't match what they had in stock. My boyfriend had the smash burger and it was super messy and greasy. I'm not sure that I would return to this location. I prefer their more intimate location in Downers. read more

The service here is seriously amazing. The food has come a long way and the location is great. We quite literally felt like family when we decided to pop in here one summer day. I'm writing this now because yelp prompted me to update my review and I totally forgot I've ever had a not amazing time at alter. The hostess, Danielle, was so sweet. I was super pregnant when we went and we brought our two mini doxies (patio seating) which sparked conversation. The manager stopped by and brought us a pretzel (I don't remember why but I remember it was a surprise). Just a great spot. read more

I met up with some old coworkers on a Wednesday night... The place was crowded, but the service and the attention was spot on... They allowed us to linger and didn't push us so that they could turn the table and the service was excellent. read more

This is one of my favorite locations to sit outside and have a beer during the warm months. They have a couple huge patios, one along the river and one facing all the other restaurants in the square. The inside is large, too, but can be quite noisy. They have some of the better craft beer in the St. Charles area. The food is good, upscale bar food. They have a watermelon salad that is very good, although it might be seasonal. Burgers are good, too. Just a nice place to hang out; we usually stop for at least a beer when in the area. read more

Came here on a Sunday afternoon before seeing a show at the Arcadia. There is a large patio space and the inside has tables and bar seating. The atmosphere is open and inviting. Our waitress immediately came over to or table and offered drink and menu options. I had the Bang Bang Cauliflower and our waitress suggested I add the Cuban grilled chicken. My husband had the Chili Garlic Shrimp with the Cuban grilled chicken, with a side of fries. Both were recommend by our waitress and were good selections. The portions were very quite large. Since each of our meals were appetizers with the added chicken , they were a bit pricey. Overall, tasty food ! read more

Good food and service....However, we were surprised to receive a 3% charge on our bill for credit card usage. No sign posted on either the menu or at the host stand to forewarn us. Had we known, we would have stopped by an ATM first. We will probably not return because of these hidden charges. read more

The pierogi small plate was great and enough for a full meal and the wild game burger was very good also.

Small business but worth a look. I'm. It a beer fan but my son enjoyed a few of their beers. Friendly staff.

The place is nice, service was friendly! Beer was meh and they only serve their own (makes sense, but just an FYI). The food was good, but nothing blew our socks off, so didn't feel it was worth the price tag. read more

Pepperoni flat bread was amazing and service was prompt and courteous. Outside patio very pleasant as well

Great menu. Amazing ambiance, especially the outside seating. Excellent and friendly service.

Restaurant was clean and nice. Quiet evening but nice acoustic guitar soloist performing. Beer was solid and the food was tasty and fresh (tacos a bit sweet, Nashville hot and fries very good) and service was excellent. read more

Dropped in here after a wedding ceremony for a pre-reception happy hour! It was a great space with kind, attentive, and quick service! Great drink selection for our whole table, and the shared food we ordered was very tasty (loved the crab cakes). Next time we're in town, we'll be back! read more

Visited Alter yesterday and was pleasantly surprised! I've never been to this part of St. Charles and it's so nice! The Alter location has a lot of parking around it, from garages to street parking. And Alter has a great view of the river! We came for dinner on a Tuesday night, and I made a reservation through Tock, although it wasn't needed because there were plenty of open seats! I'm a vegetarian and found SOOOO many options here! For the appetizer we got the grilled cheese bites which was amazing! And for dinner I got the BLA sandwich, (minus the bacon) which was also super tasty! All of the food was fresh, unique, and delicious! Not to mention the golden ales we had (Center Line) was also super good! To top it off, our server was awesome too! 12/10 recommend and can't wait to come back! read more

If I enjoyed beer, this visit would have been much more enjoyable. The interior is design is very rustic and they have a nice outdoor patio. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive but the food just wasn't good. The highlight was the beer cheese fondue but even that was mediocre. It only came with three mini soft pretzels which tastes like something out of a freezer. The rock shrimp salad was big but it was basically a bunch of shredded Napa cabbage over a pile of mini shrimp. We also tried the beer cheese soup which was just...off. The chicken pesto handheld was decent but also very overpriced. read more

I am not a beer drinker, so my review is focused more on the food and environment, but I really enjoyed my time at Alter brewing. I came for a group event and sat in a private room in the back. Our waitress was super nice and attentive and the space was perfect. I really enjoyed the appetizers that we ordered, specifically the pretzels and sliders. I would highly recommend! However, the main dishes of chicken and beef weren't as great. I also tried a variety of cocktails and thought they were good but a bit too sweet. read more

Delicious food. Nice staff and good service. They accommodated our needs for a larger group of people.

Love it here, definitely a nice place to meet up with friends have a bite to eat and get a few drinks

The patio was fantastic! The service was perfect. The vegetarian selection was a little light (no veggie burger?) but I made it work.

I've been to Alter dozens of times now but I always like to change up what I order to really get the experience and I haven't been disappointed yet! Whenever I come, I usually order a flight but let the server choose the drinks because it's more fun that way. The server chose my flight and it was definitely a good set. This location just got the Sticky Situation drink in (dark beer w/ peanut butter flavor) and it's definitely a good choice. Also, I asked to make the Alter Burger spicy - so they added jalapeños and chimichurri sauce. Personally, it wasn't spicy at all but it was still really good and might be my go to custom. Chinichurri sauce to put on the burger? So good! read more

We have stopped in for a beer previously, but wanted to try the food. Ugh, I wanted to like it because the menu looked great. We shared the basic burger and the Cubano. Took a bite of my half of the burger and something was off. Strange taste. Lettuce? Sauce? Finally determine that it was the burger itself. Tasted like chemicals. After the couple of bites I couldn't eat anymore. The cubano was ok. Lots of bun, not much meat and didn't care for the sweet pickles instead of dill which is the typical taste profile. Fries were good, as was the coleslaw. Beer was tasty and bar service was ok. I told the bartender about the burger, he wrote 'a note to the chef'. I wasn't looking for a freebie, my husband ate his half - he found it to be edible but 'not great'. It would have been nice if they would have knocked something off the bill - or offered a free round or something. Unfortunately won't be back. read more

Alter brewing has good beers and tasty food. Located downtown St.Charles alongside the fox river and next door to Zaza's. There is free parking garage nearby and it's about a short walk to the restaurant. I kinda got lost finding it because there is not clear visible signs to it after parking. I really enjoyed the heavy squeeze and pina colada beers. They have outdoor dining too. read more

Attended a private room birthday party at the St. Charles location. (Tip - there is a convenient parking garage across the street). The main bar and restaurant area were fully packed for a Saturday night. Was promptly shown where to go and was quickly met with one of a few dedicated servers to get a drink. Ended up trying a few different beers: Alterado - This one was my favorite. A Mexican style lager NZAA - A hazy IPA. This one was ok. Not in my top favorite IPAs, but was still a good drink. I also tried my wife's Sour. I can't remember what it was called, but the only one listed on the website is Long Walks on the Peach. This one was my least favorite. To sour/bitter for my liking. There was several buffet style foods available. My favorite had to be the Chili Garlic Shrimp. Ridiculously tasty! All in all, this would be a great place to grab a drink and a bite to eat for the weekend. read more

I wanted to like this place, but it just didn't happen. We came for lunch and beer... the menu is very eclectic with strange combinations, not a brewery menu or something to eat while watching a game. The staff was cold and our waitress had no personality and was borderline rude the entire time. The place is strange, tv's with the game on and a brewery but food that doesn't match. We ordered the Fried Barrata and waited to order lunch...we are so glad we did. The Barrata was lukewarm outside and cold inside, the "rustic bread" was so thin it could pass for white sandwich bread and they gave 4 little triangles...nothing I would ever order again and completely underwhelming and way overpriced. We decided to finish our beer and go have lunch elsewhere. For a place that puts the chef and the director of hospitality names on the menu, we were NOT impressed. read more
