Delicious and wholesome! I ordered my choices based on a previous Yelper's recommendations: the house apertif (white wine with peach liqueur) and schnitzel. Menu available in English. FOOD: 4.5 out of 5.0. (names of foods are taken from the receipt) - Tapelspitz rosti: 4.5. Tender roast beef with a nice sauce. - Schweineschnitzel Wiener Art: 4.5. breaded mashed-thin pork. Beautiful aroma with herbs; served with lemon, salad, and fries. - Dessert - chocolate souffle with whipped cream and ice cream: 5.0. Excellent. DRINKS: 5.0 - House apertif: 5.0. This was really special. Cool Riesling wine with a touch of peach liqueur. - Wine: 4.5. I had a semi-dry; she had a sweet - we both enjoyed it. SERVICE: 4.5. She was very attentive and personable with a warm smile. We enjoyed paging through the photo book of Altes Haus and the village, including a 1950 photo of the owner (who prepared our meal) as a young girl. AMBIANCE: 5.0. Indoor and outdoor seating. When I say this place is old, I mean THIS PLACE IS OLD. The food is mediocre, but it was better than the food we ate at our hotel. It's certainly fun being in the oldest building of the town, and it was a beautiful rainy day. We sat close to a window, drank Gerolsteiner sparkling water and had a nice conversation over a meal. I was glad that the servers all spoke English. :-) read more

Update: We tried again! The food was very good and the menu provided many authentic dishes. Our waitress was very personable and we opted to sit outside. The architecture of the building was stunning! I would rate this experience as a 5, so I averaged my less than desirable 1st experience with this one. Absolutely beautiful and historic building in a great location. This restaurant was recommended by Rick Steves and he is usually spot on with his recommendations. We arrived at 5:45 and were told that they open at 6:00, so we said we would come back. We returned at 6:15 and the waitress was extremely rude and said that they were too busy and scoffed at us saying that it would be a very long wait ( only about 1/6 of the tables were occupied ) and she walked away. Disappointed to say the least, we decided to dine at The Restaurant at Hotel Altkölnischer Hof next door and it was a fabulous experience. So much potential over-shadowed by completely unnecessary rude staff. read more

Came over the summer to this "oldest house" (circa 1368) for dinner and ate outside at one of their tables on the quiet cobblestone street (inside was dark and wooden). We had the schnitzel and the roast beef with red wine sauce. Both were delicious! read more

The oldest restaurant in the city. Great atmosphere , food and service. The apple strudel was good too.
