I've had so many guests approach me to rave about the beauty of the venue and how wonderful the wedding was! The food was absolutely delicious! While we were required to use TGIS Catering, this turned out to be a fantastic decision; we received numerous compliments on the food. One guest , who's attended countless weddings, even mentioned that it was among the top three wedding dinners she's ever experienced. The team at TGIS was excellent and collaborated with us to create the ideal menu. The servers and bartenders were friendly and efficient. One fantastic feature with TGIS is their bar mixer option, which allows you to provide your own alcoholic beverages--this was a great way to save money. A special shout-out goes to The Betty coordinators, Jeremy and Anastasia. Anastasia, our main coordinator, was especially wonderful--so kind and always ready to assist with any questions or issues that arose. My wife and I discovered The Modern during a special event right before I proposed, and we knew that if we ever got married, this would be the place. Following our engagement, we had a tour of the place with Mary, and we were 1000% convinced with the place since Mary came with the package lol. The communication throughout the course of our planning was outstanding, and both Abel and Mary addressed all our inquiries and concerns without hesitation and with clear answers. While the conditions of the contract initially seemed rigid, all guidelines and expectations were stated clearly, and both Abel and Mary provided all the support necessary to ensure the vendors understood and executed per the contract accordingly. All terms of the pricing were transparent, and we found the costs to be worth every penny, as we were 1000% satisfied with the venue. Through the course of our two-year planning, Abel and Mary were available and offered the walkthroughs necessary for the vendors and us to plan accordingly and execute an impeccably perfect wedding. Mary did an outstanding job and exerted so much patience with both my Wife and I through the course of food and drink tasting. She assessed our preferences and perfected our specialty cocktails and food menu to reflect my wife, our guests, and I. We appreciated the opportunity to host our rehearsal brunch at their Kitchen and Bar located below the venue. Our guests enjoyed getting a small taste of the delicious food and drinks they'd be having the following day at the actual wedding. The day of the wedding could not have unfolded so perfectly, both aesthetically and logistically. Abel and Mary coordinated and collaborated in unison with our group of vendors, and they really outdid themselves by providing the foundation to our dream wedding, literally. They did an amazing and efficient job at flipping the venue space for the reception. All while our guests were enjoying themselves in the lavish lounge during cocktail hour. The venue itself is perfect. It is very modern, clean, spacious, classy, and their furniture and greenery were the perfect accessories necessary to complete our wedding day. And that's not all. The VIEWS are one of a kind as the venue has an entire wall space made up of windows that overlooks Long Beach Airport and an outdoor terrace that allowed us and our guests to enjoy the views. We literally had airplanes flying up and down during our entire wedding, with a grand exit of us flying off in a helicopter. My wife, our guests, and I cannot believe how perfect the entire day turned out. They will not stop raving about how perfect and beautiful everything turned out. From the food to the drinks and the wonderful bartenders, and of course to how magically, beautiful our wedding was. None of which would have been possible without the fantastic venue, Abel, Mary and their team. While we are saddened to turn the chapter from the wedding planning and wedding, we are so so so happy we chose The Modern. There are also plenty of rooms where performers or crew can unwind before going on stage. Plenty of spots to set up bars and photo booths. There are also stages if your gig requires it. TG we were able to pivot because we originally booked the Wayfarers Chapel that unfortunately is no longer. Sara made it work for us so that we did not have to completely change our plans. While there are small spaces within the outdoors, it didn't feel too disjointed. It allowed for more pockets of intimacy with your guests. The bar area is so lovely with so much character---well the whole home cas wow it's like you're stepping foot in a movie set. The greenery is kept up in such great condition and when the candle lights come on along with the outdoor fireplace at night, it is pure magic. This venue is not ordinary or cookie cutter. Everything is done up thoughtfully. It's for those that want something a little different but still has all the convenience and professionalism of a bigger venue. We went with food from Chef Dora ---also amazing, and so many styles of foods she makes!! The DJ and bartender was found by Sara as part of our package, and they did not disappoint either. My friends commented on how awesome our DJ was--one of the best they've ever had at a wedding. Sara is probably one of the biggest reasons I went with her venue. Not to say the place isn't pretty cas it is literally made of dreams, but Mama Sara is heaven-sent. She's hilarious first of all. But more importantly, she is who I want to support in this world. She's honest, down to earth, fun, incredibly driven and fierce, and loves her community. I truly debated whether or not to leave this review because our wedding day itself still had some…read morebeautiful moments. However, after reflecting on the entire planning process, I feel future couples deserve transparency before making such a large investment. To start with the positives: the venue itself created a beautiful atmosphere for our wedding, Critic's Choice Catering was loved by our guests, and several setup details, including the welcome table and cake tables, were set up as planned. Many guests complimented the food throughout the evening. Unfortunately, the planning process behind the scenes was extremely stressful and, at times, disappointing due to repeated communication issues, inconsistencies, and preventable mistakes. From the beginning, Kaycie (the founder and coordinator) sold us on the venue by emphasizing that it was "all-inclusive" and offered things other venues did not. During our initial meetings, I specifically asked for an overall quote that included a dinner package so we could determine whether the venue fit within our budget. I trusted her expertise and guidance when she provided us with pricing, and because it fell within our budget, we decided to move forward. Several months later, we discovered that we had actually been quoted for an appetizer package rather than a dinner package. Kaycie stated that we had mentioned possibly bringing in our own catering company, but that was simply a question we asked while exploring options. It was never confirmed that we would be using outside catering. The difference in pricing was substantial, and we felt misled. When we raised our concerns, we were told that we should have noticed the pricing difference and asked more questions before submitting our deposit. As first-time wedding planners, we relied on the expertise we were paying for and expected accurate information from the start. Another concern involved what was actually included with the venue. During our tour, Kaycie proudly showed us a large book of linen options and explained that they offered far more choices than other venues we had visited. Later, we learned that glassware, china, silverware, tables, chairs, linens, and other essentials were not included as we had believed. As people who had never planned a wedding before, we did not know these items would need to be rented separately. We often felt like information presented in person did not align with information later provided through email. For larger weddings, I would strongly encourage couples to get every detail in writing and verify exactly what is and is not included. At one point, we were told, "We have no control over how you read and interpret our literature." As clients relying on the venue's expertise and documentation, that response felt dismissive rather than helpful. One of the biggest disappointments was the seating chart. Kaycie sent me another bride's seating chart as a template and instructed me to follow that format. I did exactly that and even asked her to review it beforehand to make sure everything looked correct. She confirmed it was fine. On the wedding day, however, families were split apart, couples were separated, parents were seated at different tables, and children were not seated with their families. We later learned that she had told some of our guests she could not fully read the chart. Had that concern been communicated beforehand, I would have gladly clarified it or come in myself to ensure it was set up correctly. Instead, one of the most important organizational pieces of the reception was mishandled despite us paying for coordination services and setup assistance. There was also a serious issue involving one of the bartenders, who we later learned was terminated. Multiple guests informed us that he refused to serve drinks unless they tipped him, despite the fact that we paid for bartending services and supplied all of the alcohol ourselves. Guests reported feeling pressured to tip, and one guest was even told, "I have rent to pay," before being asked to send money directly to him. Another guest was left in tears after an uncomfortable interaction. We were also told he attempted to charge for premium tequila shots using tequila that we had personally provided. Several guests commented that drinks were inconsistent and tasted different throughout the evening. I do want to recognize Brendon, the operations manager, who was kind, professional, and genuinely apologetic. He listened to our concerns, acknowledged that these issues should not have happened, and took accountability for the areas where they fell short. His response was the first time we truly felt heard during this process. I understand that no wedding is perfect and that unexpected issues can arise. However, communication, accountability, and professionalism are critical when couples are investing significant time, trust, and money into one of the most important days of their lives.
