We travel this stretch of highway often but we are usually in a hurry and don't want to stop and sit down. This trip was more laid back and decided to take the kids to experience Al's (my husband and I stopped many times when traveling for high school sports). My advice....skip it. Service was mediocre. Typical souvenir shops inside that is a little overpriced but it is in the middle of no where. also a quaint little grocery store that is almost a throw back to grocery stores in a a time bygone. The restaurant is a great hearty home cooking meal establishment. The food is plentiful, cheap and very good! For one reason or another I always stop in here and always will. It's a watering hole off the 90 freeway and I drove by this place several times in the past, not even thinking of stopping by and eating at this place in the past several years when traveling to Rapid City. Today I felt adventurous and stopped for lunch after crossing over the Missouri river. I was quickly seated and it resembled a country hunting lodge. The server quickly took our order. One of the better rated places in the area, plus it shares my name, so yes we'll stop by here! Has a very touristy vibe to it, but that's okay since that's what we are. After seeing the beautiful Dignity statue along with the grand sight of the Missouri River, we crossed it and came into Al's Oasis, not expecting a whole lot from it. The restaurant had plentiful seating, and those pies looked DELICIOUS. Man those things were tempting. But after that buffalo burger, I was stuffed and knew that pie wouldn't sit well in the heat of my car. Boy do I regret not grabbing a slice. Anyway, the burger was great and had a softer texture to it than beef which I really enjoy. Wait staff was friendly enough, and the Oasis was just a fun stopover on our trip with all the decor and little shops. This place is HUGE. There is literally a grocery store inside, it's basically a small mall. We stopped here on the way through to use the facilities, and I was completely surprised when walking inside to see a full restaurant, c-store/souvenir shop and literal grocery store. It was conveniently located right off the highway, and the only thing that's keeping it from 5 stars is the lack of grassy areas to walk the pups. I love to stop at Al's Oasis when I'm on my way to the Black Hills. When my son was younger, he loved to shop for some little toys to pass the time in the car. I still like shopping for souvenirs, though I think the prices are a little high. Al's has nice, clean restrooms, which I appreciate on a road trip. The restaurant serves very typical midwest "home cooking" at a reasonable price. Finally, there us even a grocery store which can be handy. We got into town and asked the motel what restaurants were in the area and they recommended Al's Oasis because it had a variety of different foods. There aren't too many options in Chamberlain, so we decided to try out Al's. I ordered the french dip sandwich ($11) and it had a lot more meat than I expected. A COVID appropriate menu had significant fewer choices than usual - but we were able to each get favorites (me: hot turkey; him: hot roast beef). Mine: lukewarm, turkey and gravy tasteless, have never before had to add salt and pepper to diner gravy. His: cold, tasteless gravy, and roast beef he was unable to cut with a knife. The place was empty when we arrived later in the evening so we were very well taken care of by a young lady who was very sweet. The salad bar was well stocked and looked fresh even though it was late. I had the country fried steak that was fork tender with a delicious cream gravy and mashed potatoes that would be hard to beat anywhere. Staff were friendly. The restaurant was nice. I liked the theme(sat down and read old cowboy wanted posters in a frame). They have high chairs so it's kid and family friendly. They have a salad & soup bar( my husband said it was good idk). The bison (buffalo) burger I tasted was okay I would recommend just plain if not it's overpowering with too much happening as the buffalo patty itself is smoked. We saw lots of fun billboards for this place and since our hotel was right next door, we planned to eat dinner here. We were hungry, and it was almost 9pm, so our other choices were fast food. Then I read the reviews and was hesitant to eat here. But we came in anyway, not wanting fast food. I was very pleasantly surprised. We ordered pork chops and they were moist and delicious. Fresh green beans prepared perfectly. Same with loaded baked potato. Soup was cheesy potato and ham, and it was excellent. The potato salad, macaroni salad, and cottage cheese from the salad bar were fresh and very good. The coffee was only five cents, and just as good as the $2.50 coffee we had at a restaurant this morning. We were pleasantly full, but didn't want to pass up the home made chocolate pie, so we got that to go. We just ate it in our hotel room, and it was outstanding. We plan to take more with us on the road tomorrow! Our server, Nila, was delightful, and talked football with my husband, which he loved. We definitely recommend this restaurant. We stopped on a cross state trip for coffee and " homemade" pie. Don't expect homemade pie, however. The crust is hard, tasteless and with a very commercial looking crust. The lemon pie, which is their specialty tastes like commercial lemon pie filling and sour cream. The huge, thick layer of whipped cream on it tasted like it was made of chemicals and nothing of wholesome ingredients. I make homemade pies and this was NOT homemade pie. After traveling for 7 hours and seeing many roadway signs advertising Al's Oasis. We decided to stop for dinner at about 5 o'clock. Outside is very appealing inside not so much. Staff was not accommodating and we were seated in the corner of an empty room. Their "signature" dish, open faced sandwiches and homemade pies were sold out. We all opted for a burger. My husband and I stopped here on our way to visit Mount Rushmore. I read the negative comments and pulled in anyway because I'm tired of listening to all of your ridiculous reasons for complaining! We were looking for postcards and t-shirts from the area. Most postcards were Mt Rushmore no Corn Palace, or Dignity. Every tshirt we saw had Al's Oasis on it. I get that you want your name out there but a few shirts with just South Dakota or just Mt Rushmore would be great. Thought we'd give this place a try while passing through town, as we were staying in the hotel located next to it. We decided to order one hot turkey and a side of fried pickle chips to split. The waitress was friendly, but we were glad we only ordered one hot turkey. Half of the turkey was brown, dried out, and hard. We peeked at the "salad bar", which had less than the cafeteria at the hospital were I work. It looked like there was plenty of room for more so perhaps it was just our timing. Definitely go to look at it before choosing it. The tables were clean but the floor was a disaster. It's carpeted and so harder to clean, however it was pretty awful. We were there well after lunch rush, but before any dinner rush. I could have forgiven the floor if I'd seen efforts to fix the issue but I saw nothing being done. The food was okay. The Indian taco salad was probably the best thing at our table. The buffalo burger was dry despite being underdone. The steak tips had potential but the entire plate was cold when I got it. We had been looking forward to pie afterwards including the "famous" lemon cream cheese pie. They were out. Unfortunately there was very little of any pie to be had... which didn't stop an employee (he seemed to be a supervisor), who wasn't waiting on us, pressure us into purchasing a whole pie. This is after we told him that we had hours to go before getting home. I don't mind being asked, but I should only have to turn it down once.
